Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars This Book is Worst than Illness.......2007-10-01

I found this to be the worst text book I have ever had to read, the test questions it offers, are based on one sentence out of each chapter rather than concepts.

It has no underlying themes rather than any one of an ethnic minority
MUST have poor health which is of itself racist and discriminating. I would completely disagree by saying that I know plenty of healthy people who are of minority statuses.

The book is extremely boring to read and I agree with the first review, it just very repetetive and does not explain any concept in its own words.

1 out of 5 stars Extremely tedious read.......2007-09-22

I am a first year nursing student, and this book is in use for my institutions "Nursing Across the Life Span" course. At first glance, I thought that this would be a comprehensive examination of health promotion. However, I have found it to be extremely tedious to read. The authors don't seem to know the meaning of the word "paraphrase", and write some incredibly convoluted explanations for what should be very simple concepts. I am already college educated, and did well in college. Yet, as I read this book, I found myself stopping to say "Huh?" Often, the definitions and explanations are direct quotes from other sources and they are nearly always convoluted and difficult. In short, I hate this book and find it quite a chore to have to read. It's page after page of tedium, and it doesn't have to be that way. Additionally, this book is terrible when it comes to defining important terms. True, it depicts important terms in bold print but often does not provide an in-text definition. Rather, I found myself having to stop and flip to the glossary in order to located the definiton. I don't like having to interrupt the flow of reading, and the way the book was written necessitated that. Several in my class have the same problem with this textbook, and we have asked the instructor to consider changing the text for next years class. This is a topic area that nurses absolutely need to understand, and it could be a very interesting topic. This text, however, does a poor job of presenting it. It's simply too convoluted and tedious to read. It isn't student friendly in the least, and I would not recommend it to anyone in its current form.

1 out of 5 stars Just awful........2005-12-23

I have NEVER read a book labeled as health promotion that was less about health.

This book really belongs in a philosophy of new age theory.

You will learn how to enter into relationships of ethical proportions to help with self esteem issues of transgendered beings of consciousness.

At the same time you learn how to promote well being through the United Nations and universal transferance of wealth to achieve oneness.

The definition of disease:
"The failure of a person's adaptive mechanisms to counteract simuli and stresses adequately, resulting in functional or structural disturbances."

I guess we should just forget the old fashioned definition of " a condition of the living animal or plant body or of one of its parts that impairs normal functioning"

Define illness "A social construct in which people are in an imbalanced, unsustainable relationship with their environment and are failing in the ability to survive and to create a higher quality of life"

I used to think it was "an unhealthy condition of body or mind".

When Michael Milken was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in 1993, he wasted no time switching from his daily egg-and-bacon-sandwich breakfasts to a low-fat, vegetarian diet. He also founded CaP CURE, the Association for the Cure of Cancer of the Prostate. Through research supported by CaP CURE, Milken learned that cutting down on fat was not enough--that soy protein could be an important missing ingredient in his diet. He duly incorporated all of the cancer-fighting ingredients into his diet, but he missed the joy of eating.

Enter Beth Ginsberg, Culinary Institute of America (CIA) graduate and natural foods chef. When Milken hired her in 1995, she turned his medicinal soy drinks into tasty, healthy fruit smoothies, his tofu-spread sandwiches into Vegetable Reubens--with tempeh bacon! It became clear that a healthy, cancer-fighting diet need not mean an end to culinary pleasure. In the beautifully photographed The Taste for Living Cookbook, Ginsberg collects more than 75 of Milken's favorite dishes, from Tofu Dog Casserole with a Pretzel Crust to Greek Spinach Pie in a Phyllo Nest to Devil's "Fool" Cake with Cocoa Frosting. Colorful icons next to each recipe let you know how long a dish will take to prepare--many are under an hour from kitchen to table. Nutritional details are given at the end of each recipe, and Ginsberg notes when a substitution can be made (say, low-fat turkey in place of tempeh in a sandwich). Proceeds from the sales of The Taste for Living Cookbook will go to further CaP CURE's research--resulting, one hopes, in even more delicious, healthful meals from chef Ginsberg. --Rebecca A. 2 out of 5 stars If only I'd read the customer reviews more thoroughly. . . .......2007-09-08

I bought what turned out to be a beautifully photographed, almost coffee table-like book . . . but not only do I have a hard enough time finding exotic ingredients where I live but I surely don't have the time to do the recipes Mr. Milken's personal chef turns out every night. If only I'd read a little further in my frenzy to find out everything I could about prostate cancer! My husband is newly diagnosed with the disease and we're attempting to turn our diets in a more healthy direction but it still has to be realistic cooking or it just won't happen at the end of a long work day. The best cookbook I've found out there is "Eat to Beat PC Cookbook" by David Ricketts. I need a cookbook I can really use for us to make this battle.

    4 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2002-12-15

The book presents recipes attractively. I've tried a few and they were easier and better than I expected, given the somewhat unusual ingredients for familiar foods. The book goes astray, to some degree, in my opinion, because it works too hard at recreating unhealthy high fat foods with low-fat, high-soy, equivalents. Better to just present vegetarian recipees that don't try to seem like something else.

5 out of 5 stars a treat for the eyes.......2002-01-30

what i loved most about this book is the 'photojournalist'
format...just looking at the photographs and the tasty,
    colorful food motivated me...interesting

4 out of 5 stars Great for those who are lactose intolerant.......2001-04-19

I purchased this book because it contained recipes like flan that didn't require any dairy products. It also provides some great tips for substituting out ingredients like cream and other milk products without sacrificing texture and taste.

At first, I was a bit concerned that most of the recipes in the book called for ingredients that I had never heard of, but even the small health-food section of my local grocery store had almost everything that I needed.

    3 out of 5 stars If I Were A Rich Man..........2001-02-25

The taste For Living Cookbook Mike Milken's Favorite Recipes For Fighting Cancer is a nicely photographed book. The recipes are basic health food fare. Cut down on fat, avoid meat, eat lots of veggies and soy. If I was a wealthy man I would have a professional chef move into my home and cook these complicated meals im my professional kitchen. I would also go to a medition center in Massachusetts "based on Ayurveda tradition" and I would "invite a doctor trained in both Western and Ayurveda medicine to move into...our house for a few months" I don't mean to be cynical but I have neither the time or money to follow this books recipes. I did not find this book very helpful .

    Book Description

Longing for a kinder, gentler world? As the old saying goes, everything begins at home, and odds are, if you live in the all-American household, the air inside is more toxic than the air outside, even if you live in the most polluted of cities. You regularly handle the filthiest object in your home -- the kitchen sponge -- and put the same chemicals on your face that are used in brake fluid and antifreeze.

The cleaning agents and personal care products commonly marketed to and used in American homes contain not only some very dangerous, toxic chemicals, but they also create an "overly clean," chemically bombed-out house that compromises immune systems. And with more than fifty million Americans suffering from allergies and other autoimmune diseases -- not to mention the developing and fragile immune systems of children and seniors -- large numbers of people are actually being made sicker and sicker by their homes.

Learn to live a clean, healthy, more economical way with Ellen Sandbeck, the nontoxic avenger. In this must-have book for the twenty-first- century home, this passionate, witty advocate of all things organic will teach you how to maintain every part of the home -- from living room to septic tank, kitchen floor to bathroom sink -- using safe, simple cleansers and quick preventative measures as well as the most effective organic products on the market to get the job done.

Learn time-saving, preventative housekeeping, such as taking thirty seconds to clean the shower while you shower. Take care of bathroom stains with baking soda and vinegar rather than commercial, toxic bathroom "bombs" peddled to you with such force by manufacturers. Need whiter whites? There is no bleaching power on earth stronger than the sun. Snow clean your fine rugs. Choose fruits and vegetables from the relatively pesticide residue-free list. Clean felt-tipped pen stains with vodka. Make furniture shine with olive oil and lemon. Your house will also smell as great as it looks.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Is Awesome.......2007-08-22

I saw this book at a bookstore and rushed home to Amazon to get it. :) It is a great reference for housekeeping. I couldn't believe all the things you can do with random household products. Like baking soda... Awesome!

5 out of 5 stars Fun to read, Great reference.......2007-08-03

In many ways, this is a good Organic Living 101 book. I received this book as a Christmas gift and wasn't sure what to think at first. I was pleasantly surprised. This book has not only been enjoyable to read but has become a valuable reference as well. Lately, whenever I've had a question regarding safe cleaning or home maintenance, I find the answer here - from concerns about ants to cleaning carpets to cleaning the shower. I've also found great advice and ideas for getting organized around the house. I appreciate the author's goal to spend LESS time cleaning - not more!

5 out of 5 stars Down to Earth with REAL, EVERYDAY advice.......2007-07-07

This is the 1st time I have taken the time to write a review about any book. That should say something at least. This book has become my bible as I have bought and begun to renovate my first-ever home. While my mom is nagging about bleaching out the basement and hiring a pest control service, I am able to come back to Organic Housekeeping for advice that is in line with my morals. This book is NOT preachy. Instead, it offers practical advice for straight-to-the-point how to do ____ without poisioning your family (pets included!). Thank goodness for this book! I recommend it to everyone who has an interest in being green. :)

5 out of 5 stars Well scrubbed book.......2007-05-13

This book includes a lot of common sense/tried and true methods for cleaning (and yes they do work) along with many new ideas I had not heard of before that are simple to carry out. I like that fact that the material is not toxic and will not set off my asthma like some of the store-bought items do.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-04-03

This book is full of excellent advice. I have been concerned about the products that I use for cleaning for a while and this book gave me a great one-stop resource to start doing something about it. The introduction on how to handle the mountain of stuff we tend to accumulate was a welcome bonus (buying a copy for my ex-wife just for that!).

I am an interior designer and work for an architectural firm. Because of the information I have learned thru my education and professional experience, I found very little new information in this book. If you have no knowledge of green building practices, this book would be beneficial.

5 out of 5 stars Great overview of building a green home. .......2007-01-09

This book was a overview/introduction to building a green home. Should be a must read for builders and anyone planning on building a new home. Not all strategies will work for every situation, but there's lots here that would apply for any situation or budget.

4 out of 5 stars Nice text, appeals to broad audience.......2007-01-09

The text is well-written and can appeal to a wide audience. It's simple enough to understand for those without a great deal of knowledge in sustainable design, yet interesting and usefull enough for the professional who's more trained in sustainability. The text covers sustainable homes in a logical order, first stressing the foundation concepts like siting, orientation, passive solar, and building envelope efficiency, BEFORE moving on to less critical (but more popular) topics such as green materials.

I am a professor of Environmental Design and am currently building a passive solar, zero-energy home, and if I were to write a text that comprises the whole of the process and goals in sustainable home building, the format and breadth of topics would be similar to this book.

One negative of the book is the absence of color images to illustrate some points. The simple line drawings get the point across, but photos might have a better impact - especailly in sections discussing more advanced systems such as renewable energy systems or rainwater catchment systems.

    5 out of 5 stars EYE OPENER!.......2007-09-13

This book was a real eye opener for me during my first read--EYE OPENER!. I went through every chapter with a fine tooth comb and to tell you the truth I was shocked. Shocked because I have been assuming, up to this point, that the products I was using, in my household, in my hair, on my skin (the stuff I grew up on, the stuff Grandma always used--oh ya during WWII maybe...) were safe. Now I know this is USUALLY NOT the case. I learned later on that most of the crap I was used to using belonged right in the trash can. That is where everything eventually ended up. The next day I decided to start from scratch. I have used this book as a continuous reference, a Bible if you will. I have also purchased a cosmetic dictionary to help me understand all of the chemical yahoo they put in body products as well. The best thing I learned to do is read labels--READ THE LABELS! Now I know that I am doing the best for myself and my family. If the FDA cannot protect me--by George I am doing something to protect myself and those around me! This book changed my life and gave me an excellent education about how toxic our homes and body products REALLY are. Now...I rather dislike the companies who make toxic cleaning products, makeup, body produts and food. My hope is that someday this world will stop supporting the bad stuff and move on to the good.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Home Essential.......2006-07-04

What I love most about this book, is that Dadd gives practical changes that can be made as gradually or quickly as budget demands. We use alot of the recipes for natural cleaning in this book. But my favorite recipe overall is for the Ginger Soda... mmmm. As my children grow out of their old toys, almost all plastic, we've been getting them new ones that are more natural (wooden mostly). And as they are growing out of their clothes we replace them with cotton fabric. I was very suprised, as I looked at the tags in the clothes, how much of it was synthetic blends. We've replaced the childrens' and our bedding with 100% cotton and we're all sleeping better. I recommend this book to everyone who will give me the time of day! Enjoy and have safer, happier home!!

It is challenging these days to know what cookware to buy, how to get rid of ants without calling pest control, and what bubblebath is safe. I was surprised to learn that even my home's type smoke detectors contained fadioactive material (yikes) and that even your ironing board can outgass fumes...This book is very very helpful to me, this is info that is hard to find elsewhere!

3 out of 5 stars Good stuff but missing stuff.......2007-09-03

I really liked this book; however I wish there were more recipes for like soaks for pedicures & manicures & baths.

3 out of 5 stars OK for beginners.......2007-04-09

The book has some interesting ideas and recipes but it covers mostly what is already widely known. Also in the recipes it does not clearly specify which facial preparations are going to be non-greasy day creams or greasy night ones.
I expected to find some make-up recipes but they aren't in the book.
Generally it is a good book for a beginner.

1 out of 5 stars Do your homework first..........2007-03-03

I was VERY disappointed in this book for several reasons:
1). The author mentions the use of mineral oil and petrolatum as a moisturizer (for those of you that don't know these are byproducts of gasoline and are AWFUL for your skin, the cosmetic/beauty industry only use it because it is dirt cheap and never goes bad).
2). It is not practical to put your time and effort into making something for one application (will we really see results after just one use?). I suppose you can multiply the recipes but most of the recipes need to be used ASAP or they spoil. Needless to say I have not found a happy medium!
3). I have coarse curly hair- I tried one of the "hair packs" and needless to say it was a MESS! It took several shampoos to get all of the stuff out of my hair.

In conclusion, I would reccommend you research what products are actually good for you and not just convienient for the makers!

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome!!.......2007-01-22

I always wanted to learn how to make my own beauty products without all of the harmful chemicals that I always come across while shopping at a retail store. I have bought other books in that past only to find that it was incredibly expensive and almost impossible to find all of the ingredients, but not this one! I am able to make most of the recipes with the items I already have at home! I also love the fact that most of the recipes only require a few ingredients. The recipes are also extremely effective and the book also explains the purpose of each ingredient.

    5 out of 5 stars Great ideas.......2007-01-18

I love this book...I ordered a few of them to start making my own cosmetics after researching all the nasty things that are in what we actually cover our bodies with. Our skin is the biggest way into our insides and it affects us more than we even realize. this book has helped me come up with my own variations. Thank you for the very useful and helpful information: Easy to read, easy to follow and lots of fun, too. Great price too,Amazon.com!

    Book Description

In Urban Sprawl and Public Health, Howard Frumkin, Lawrence Frank, and Richard Jackson, three of the nation's leading public health and urban planning experts explore an intriguing question: How does the physical environment in which we live affect our health? For decades, growth and development in our communities has been of the low-density, automobile-dependent type known as sprawl. The authors examine the direct and indirect impacts of sprawl on human health and well-being, and discuss the prospects for improving public health through alternative approaches to design, land use, and transportation.

Urban Sprawl and Public Health offers a comprehensive look at the interface of urban planning, architecture, transportation, community design, and public health. It summarizes the evidence linking adverse health outcomes with sprawling development, and outlines the complex challenges of developing policy that promotes and protects public health. Anyone concerned with issues of public health, urban planning, transportation, architecture, or the environment will want to read Urban Sprawl and Public Health.

5 out of 5 stars Public Health input essential for Urban Planning.......2007-09-24

The Europeans are way ahead of our efforts to consider health issues in the urban planning process. This book provides a history and direction to address urban sprawl and understand well the health implications of reckless or solely market-driven city planning. After all, no built community will have sustainability, if its populations are at risk for chronic and acute illness.

Presented are the ingredients to make our cities safer and livable. This is a must read for City Planners, County officials, and anyone interested in cleaning up our urban communities with an eye toward social equity and environmental justice. MJY

5 out of 5 stars The dis ease of living in the US.......2005-07-28

The costs of sprawl are enormous. This book describes the costs in terms of many different types of public health measurements. If you haven 't thought about sprawl, this is a good place to start. It is chilling to think about how many physical, emotional, psychological and medical ramifications there are to the US automobile lifestyle. The price to degradation of the planet was not discussed in depth but that too would make you think about our legacy of our lifestyle to the quality of our planet for future generations. I am encouraged that the topic is being developed. The automobile lifestyle is addictive and to change it will require a paradigm shift. The shift starts with organized discussions and lucidly presented data. This book is excellent on both accounts.

5 out of 5 stars reasonably well done.......2005-02-04

A broad (though not particularly deep) guide to the public health problems associated with sprawl, including: (1) the air pollution caused by sprawl-induced auto traffic, (2) the health consequences of the reduction in walking caused by automobile dependency, (3) injuries and deaths from auto traffic, (4) water quality problems associated with suburban development, (5) the alleged intangible costs of automobile dependency (e.g. driving-induced stress, the isolation of nondrivers). None of these issues are addressed in enormous detail; for example, the book occasionally mentions pro-sprawl counterarguments, but does not fully address them. But then again, each of these topics could probably justify a separate book.

5 out of 5 stars Survive the back woods or thrird World.......2007-07-06

Well who'd ever think I, a middled aged man married to a wonderful wife and cook, would be cooking for 4 in the third world, anything other than PB&J's.
They all laughed at me as I stashed vac-packed meals into 4 seperate ditty bags, I would just smile and say I wanted to be prepared.
As we went off the main road and up into the mountain villages, by the third day thier tune started to change.

Wonderful quick meals Breakfasts(eggs and sausage) soups for lunch, lasanga and stews for dinner and even bisguits. breakfast squares, granola bars, and carrot soup were the big hits with the ladies but I think they just enjoyed not having to cook.
The meals are power packed and full of protien very nutritional. easy to find or grow ingredients. The portions were plentiful, usually we would share in the villages.

Now from grill master at home to the trail chef cooking lasnqna in the bush in less than 5 minutes they want me to cook these meals at home .

I Highly recommend this book to all who travel and camp where there are no stores. Cooking meals 1st then dehyrating them not only saved lots of weight in the backpack, but allows you to spice them up to your liking before you dehydrate, so meals are a delight not the same old, same old, very important on 3-4 week trips.
(A good cook always tastes the food before giving to the critics)
These Nutritional meals keep your body healthy and full of energy to work or play the next day. yet allow you to pack away plenty in a small space. also you can prepare them and stash them in the freezer months before.
Not a bad Idea to have on hand in a disaster kit stored in a sealed bucket with a couple of cases of water in the cool basement either.

Don't forget the water filter and small pot to cook & eat out of.

5 out of 5 stars Eatin' Good On the Trail.......2007-04-12

Your hiking trips no longer have to be full of boring meals in a can. Now you can cook great meals at home ahead of time and rehydrate them on the trail.

5 out of 5 stars Changed my backpacking life!.......2007-03-19

This is the book I have been waiting for. I love to cook, I love to eat, and I love to backpack, and this book lets me enjoy all three. Previously, I was one of those backpackers who ate mac-n-cheese and Lipton noodles over and over and over. It was really boring, and I wasn't getting enough protein in my diet. Getting ready for our epic 4 month hike on the PCT this summer, I wanted to try food dehydrating, but I also needed a recipe book. After lots of online research I ordered this book and "Trail Food" by Alan Kesselheim. Kesselheim and Yaffe have completely different approaches, and I find Yaffe's approach far more user-friendly. You DO NOT want to mess with drying each food item separately and then trying to assemble them in the backcountry. You are tired, you are hungry. You do not want to spend lots of time messing with ten different little baggies and jars of spices and oils. Leave all of that at home. Yaffe's approach is simple and elegant, and I'm quite honestly shocked that more people don't do it this way: You make your soup, stew, pasta dish or casserole in the comfort of your home. The key is that you must keep the chunks of vegetables, etc. very small. You then spread the dish in thin layers on your dehydrator trays and let the dehydrator do all of the work. Just this weekend, we went backpacking and ran the true field test: rehydrating all of the foods that I had previously dehydrated. The results were impressive. Breakfast casseroles, delicious spaghetti for dinner, tuna and bruschetta spreads at lunch, and none of it had that preservative-laden flavor that store-bought foods are cursed with. The only two comments I would make where Yaffe didn't get it quite right are that I can't fit the whole dish into the dehydrator (if you only have four trays like I do), so we usually end up eating some of it for dinner (not a bad thing). The second thing is that her recommended drying times seem a bit too short. I've had to add an extra hour or two to many of the recipes, but again, this is not a big deal as I dry most of this stuff overnight anyway. If you are looking for a lightweight backpacking meal solution, you cannot live without this book!

5 out of 5 stars They are wrong, and she is right!.......2007-02-27

If you are going to buy a book about backpack dehydrating this is the one. I have read several others and beat my brains out trying to get spagetti sauce to powder, etc. They are all wrong, and she is right. Don't try to dehydrate the ingredients separately, cook the whole meal and then dehydrate the whole thing together. It seems too good to be true, but it really works, and it works both easier and better. Make it your own way (within a few simple limits), and it really is better, cheaper, and easier than buying the commercial deydrated foods. I might have thought of it myself, if all of the other books weren't so misleading!

    4 out of 5 stars Tasty & Practical.......2007-01-16

Wide variety of menu items that will satisfy anyone's taste, and they won't bankrupt you. Easy to find ingredients at your local grocery store.
