Great Scholarship.......2007-06-01
Anyone who has tried to struggle through an old translation of Josephus will appreciate this work. When reading the 18th century translation one gets the sense that this is a great piece of ancient history, but it's just SO tedious. Dr. Maier's abridged translation not only covers all the important passages, but does so in an easy to read English.
The merit of Dr. Maier's translation is found in the footnotes about the controversial passage containing the reference to Jesus as the Messiah. Although scholars agree that the passage contains language inserted by some medieval copyist, there is obviously a dispute about what, if anything Josephus actually wrote. Subsequent manuscript evidence seems to justify Dr. Maier's conclusion almost to the letter.
As for the content of the original writer, Josephus has been criticized as biased, anti-Jewish, and a Roman turncoat. I was surprised to find a different picture of the writer as I read his works. The bias criticism is hardly valid when he's compared to other writers of his time. While one can question his loyalty, the fact remains that if he had not escaped being besieged in Jerusalem, we wouldn't have such a detailed contemporary account of the Jewish War. Furthermore, his Antiquities of the Jews shows a lack of any anti-Jewish sentiment. Therefore his pro-Roman treatment of the Jewish War should be attributed to having a definite perspective given his situation. The fact is that, for good or bad, he backed the winning side in the struggle that earned him a certain animosity for having backed the wrong side. The fact that Judaism survived this time of persecution is attributable to Jews like Josephus who did not sacrifice their lives for what they pragmatically saw as a lost cause.
This is a must read for anyone who is a serious student of Roman or Jewish history as well as any serious student of the New Testament.
3rd Grade Reading Level and Biased .......2004-10-25
After reading 100 pages in about ten minutes, I wondered if Josephus really wrote as if he were a child. ie: Jack was a man. He lived in a house. He had a wife. He did something. Then, Jack died. Now replace Jack with Adam, Noah, Moses, Isaac, etc. The translator/editor takes far too much liberty with his abridgement and translation. I bought the unabridge version afterward. The writing in the full version is still easy to read and follow, but it gives a much more detailed and fuller story telling. I realize that the original is very long, and editing was necessary for this book. But, the sentence and paragraph structure was dumbed down too much. Also, the current editor adds too much correlation to Jesus. He may be unaware of this, but not all readers are Christian. I bought the book for Josephus' telling of Jewish history (as the title of Josephus' major works would indicate). Not Paul Maier's idea of what is important in Josephus' landmark undertaking.
I would recommend this book to a Christian parent who may want to supplment a child's reading of Biblical stories. I would not recommend this to an adult who is interested in expanding their knowledge of Biblical history.
Best translation ever of Josephus for normal people.......2004-01-24
The works of Josephus are the most important writings we have to understand the background and history of the Bible. Yet, trying to read Josephus' wordy prose is one of the most excruciating experiences I ever encountered.
Dr. Maier's translation and commentary on Josephus is one of 3 modern translations I own, but is the only one I have used for the last 5 years. It brought Josephus to life for me and allowed me to read and understand this valuable primary source.
Dr. Maier's work is generously accented with maps and illustrations and features a translation of Josephus that is abridged and therefore readable. Dr. Maier can be trusted to weed out the useless verbosity of the original text, as he is a leading scholar on early Roman Imperial history.
Sell your other versions of Josephus and buy this one and then you may actually start to use Josephus to accent your study of the Bible.
Excellent Translation.......2000-04-20
This is a good introduction to the works of Josephus that are really quite crucial to understanding Second Temple Judaism, the Qumran sect, and the fate of the Jews in the War with Rome. Scholars of both history and religion alike will benefit from this book.

Book Description
Updated text and new maps bring this standard introduction up to date . . .
Throughout Christian history, the works of Josephus have been mined for the light they shed on the world of the New Testament. Josephus tells us about the Herodian family, the temple, the Pharisees, the Sadducees, and the Essenes. He mentions James the brother of Jesus, John the Baptist, and even Jesus himself. In Josephus and the New Testament, an internationally acknowledged authority on Josephus introduces this first-century Jewish historian to readers who want to begin to explore his witness to environment in which early Judaism and Christianity took shape.
Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Resource For Scripture Study.......2006-12-17
Many people engaged in Bible study, whether it is a casual study or formal training in scripture, have found the writings of Flavius Josephus intriguing and helpful. The famous historian's writings were penned at the same time as many New Testament writings, and for this reason alone they are valuable. We hear Josephus talk about the major religious groups during New Testament times: those mentioned in the gospels and those not mentioned specifically but may have had an indirect influence on Christianity. We also find a detailed account of the fall of the Jerusalem Temple as well as references to John the Baptist, James "the brother of the Lord" (possibly dubious entries) and Jesus himself (most scholars, including Mason concede these brief and pious references were probably added by Christian copyists). The writings of Josephus are indispensable in studying scripture.
As important and helpful as the writings of Josephus can be, author Steve Mason points out that his writings have been misused over the centuries. Early Christian authors believed Josephus' account of the destruction of the Temple proved that God's favor had left Israel and had been transferred to Christians. His writings have supported many anti-Semitic campaigns in the past. He also contends that Josephus fell out of favor with many Jewish groups because he was considered a traitor during the battle with the Romans at the time of the Temple's destruction. While one could debate whether he was in fact a traitor, but most scholars do agree that Josephus did have a gift for self preservation. In this tract, Mason hopes to strip away Christian misinterpretations of Josephus and traditional historical biases and see Josephus as he intended to be seen: as a Jewish apologist defending the Jewish faith and people as an ancient and noble faith and worthy of respect in Ancient Rome. Mason contends that it is only by viewing Josephus in this light we can appreciate his writings.
The book gives a detailed biography of Josephus and provides a concise summary of Josephus' writings. He then reconstructs the New Testament world based on the historian's writings and looks at similarities and differences between the writings of Josephus and the New Testament. Perhaps what is Mason's greatest aide is that he does not favor Josephus' wrings as accurate and the New Testament as inaccurate, as can so often be the case. Instead he looks at the differences and points to why Josephus may have written what he did, keeping in mind Josephus did have an agenda and was not ashamed to admit it, and looking at why the New Testament recorded what it did. Readers will find that Mason's approach supports New Testament writings from a historical point of view.
JOSEPHUS AND THE NEW TESTAMENT is detailed, but it is an engaging read. This book will be helpful to any student engaged in New Testament studies. It's also accessible to any person who has an interest in scripture study. It makes a wonderful companion to the actual writings of Josephus and helps us to see the historian, as a historian and use his contributions appropriately.
good overview of Josephus.......2004-12-09
I'm no scholar, just a layperson. But I enjoy learning and facts. I was familiar with Josephus in a vague type of way and knew his writings gave us much background and history for understanding New Testament life and times. And I wanted to learn more about Josephus and his writings. This book seemed the best option. It was somewhat "hard" reading for me, but I feel it was worth my efforts. The author, in my opinion, is somewhat on the theological liberal side. (I'm very conservative...) But I felt the book gave me a good overview of Josephus. It was what I was looking for...
Good introduction to Josephus and NT writings.......2002-11-17
Recommended!! Written by an author who is a specialist in the literary traditions and content of first century authors like Josephus. Provides useful detailed insights and commentary on the comparitive style and content of Josephus and NT writers. For most of the book the author stays on-topic, and readers will find the Luke/Acts chapter one of the best in the book. The author should have pruned some of the off-topic wandering into biblical interpretation of the NT with no real connection to Josephus; fundamentalists might find the author's comments annoying, but there are enough plain interesting quirks in the NT text that the author cites to be useful nevetheless.
Connects Luke to Josephus.......2000-12-31
Great book that tells the affect that the Jewish revolt in A.D. 70 had on the Roman Empire and the writers of the time. Talks about the different groups within the Jewish Community. Gives a comparison between Luke and Josephus in treatment of events and N.T. characters. It describes how Josephus contradicts himself and sometimes seems to change his view on an event. So reading a single one of Josephus' books may not give a clear picture. This book does. I have never read Josephus, but I feel that I know what to expect.
One of the Best Overall Introductions to Josephus.......2000-01-23
As a Jew, I was not looking for a pietistic Christian work, but one that would give me insights into how Josephus was received and utilized by the Church Fathers. I found Steve Mason to be an amicable and informative guide to the Christian perspective as well as a wonderful introduction to Josephus' life, works and world in general. I have read all of Josephus in the annotated Loeb editions and found new insights throughout this excellent little survey. Further, it contains one of the most incisive and reasonable discussions of the highly controversial Testimonium Flavianum -- Josephus' alleged witness to the life and mission of Jesus. I have since have had the pleasure of reading other books by Steve Mason on Josephus and have corresponded with Dr. Mason by e-mail. He is, along with Louis Feldman (who focuses on Old Testament issues) a leading authority on Josephus. This book illustrates why he is not only a great authority but a most effective instructor. Highly recommended.

Jewish Antiquities.......2007-05-21
The only historical accounts of biblical times by a non christian. This book written by a Jew with a clear leanings towards Rome gives you a good indication of what may have pertained in the times of Jesus Christ. The reference to Jesus Christ in this book is not what most christians would expect. I believe that The Complete Works of Flavius Josephus is a must read for everybody who believes in the Divinity of Jesus Christ as well as all doubters. It is a great book, I am glad I was able to get one for my library.
Bring Josephus to Life.......2006-10-18
This is a great book to complete or add to your knowledge of the times when Jesus lived. Josephus was a scholar and not a christian or follower of Jesus, but really documented life around him as he saw it. A lot that he wrote gives the manner and customs of the time and makes 2000 yrs ago come to light. He is very detailed and a great journalist. A must for any biblical scholar of today.
The begining of the beginning of the Middle East conflict........2004-02-13
This is a great book, a must read.
A lot of reviewers are Christians who value this book for providing the historical background to the New Testament, since Josephus lived very close to that time period. Yes, definitely, this book has value for that purpose.
Much of the book is a re-telling of the history of the Jews, stuff from the Old Testament/Tanakh, which Josephus knew well from his origins as a Pharisee.
In my view, though, the book is most important for a reason only briefly mentioned by other reviewers - the book answers a central question that has always struck me whenever I read about the modern history of the Jewish people and the re-establishment of the State of Israel - how did it come to pass that the Jews lost their homeland in Palestine in the first place? Few modern Jewish historians ever go back that far and write about this subject.
In this book, Flavius Josephus gives a detailed and grisly eyewitness account of the destruction of Jerusalem and the slaughter of over 1.3 million Jews (he provides the number of dead in this book), and later enslavement of tens of thousands of the survivors, by the Romans in 70 A.D. This all came about as a result of the unyielding Jewish rebellion against Roman rule.
It was this destruction of Jerusalem, and the Great Temple, that directly led to the Jewish Diaspora. (The Wailing Wall, or Western Wall, is all that's left today of the Temple).
Which was what caused the Jews to be dispersed all over Europe. Which eventually led to the Holocaust. Which led to the Zionist movement (initially only a fringe movement with few converts willing to move back to Palestine) succeeding in finding the converts and refugees willing to return to the heartland of their faith. The rapid flood of Jews into Palestine and the war that resulted from the re-establishment of the State of Israel all led to the displacement of the then current inhabitants, the Arab Palestinians. Which of course brings us to where we are today.....
Few Jews seem to care much for Josephus, and certainly he gives them good reason to be thought of as a traitor. After all, he did start out as one of the leaders of the Jewish rebellion against the Romans, and ended up as a Roman collaborator in the destruction of Jerusalem.
After initial success fighting against the Romans, Josephus became trapped in one of the rebelling towns. When his fellow rebels could not be dissuaded to surrender, he proposed that they all commit suicide by drawing lots and having each man in sequence kill the one before him. Josephus managed to be the last one in line, and then, being the last one alive, didn't follow through with his own suicide.
After being captured by the forces of the Roman general Vespasian, Josephus then managed to save himself by making a prediction that Vespasian would become emperor. I found it interesting that Vespasian, who was no fool, clearly thought that Josephus was just sucking up to him and did not release him right away. Instead, Vespasian kept Josephus imprisoned until, miraculously, Josephus's prediction came true (after Nero's suicide and a civil war with a succession of three other Roman generals claiming the throne, Vespasian emerged victorious as the new emperor).
No, Josephus was not a really admirable sort of fellow. And as his account is one of the few that describes the destruction of Jerusalem (and of many other mass killings of Jews during this time, including the story of what happened at Masada), it is easy to see why Jews would not want to re-visit this part of their history.
In his description of the siege of Jerusalem, there are plenty of details of the internecine hatred that existed between the Jews and the various other peoples of the Middle East, even back then. A lot of these other people took advantage of this siege to get their revenge against the Jews stuck in Jerusalem.
Yes, read this book, and you will come to understand that the origins of the Middle East conflict of today goes back some 2,000 years, back to the time that Jerusalam was destroyed and the Jewish people dispersed. This book tells how all of that happened, and how it all started.
too much a christian slant.......2003-07-14
this book seeks to validate (through footnotes) biblical
fairy tales. If the translator would have just stuck to the writings it would have made the read a bit more entertaining.
Indespensible.......2003-03-24
As a person who works in the field of New Testament Studies and more specifically 1st century Jewish/Christian liturgy, I can tell you that the complete works of Josephus are almost as indispensable as the Biblical and Talmudic texts themselves. Josephus works as an apologist for the Jews to the Romans, and a dedicated historian. He collects streams of tradition concerning the evolution of the Jewish people that we might not otherwise have. Because of his mentioning of Jesus and some of his disciples (most notably John and James), his work has been under intense scrutiny. However, he does have the benefit of being contemporaneous to the events, something we as modern scholars are not, despite what we may or may not like to think. This is the work of a man who wanted to set the record straight, and he is concerned with records that the Hebrew Bible was too early for, the NT was unconcerned with, and the Talmud missed entirely. If you really want to know what first century Jews, especially the aristocracy, thought about anything, Josephus, along with Philo, is your guy.

Fantastic History Resource.......2005-08-07
I have done the entire Bible as a read-aloud for our kids in the past. I was amazed on reading William Shepard's children's version of Josephus just how closely it followed the Bible. Josephus tells the story as a Jew living in the society. He goes from the time of Abraham to the fall of Jerusalem. The book parallels the Bible to its completion. One other book I found complimentary to this one is Alfred Church's retelling of The Story of The Last Days of Jerusalem. There, Josephus tells what happened from a first hand observer. I have read that Jerualem had fallen before in high school history -- this book tells a story that kept my kids glued to it until I finished reading to them.
A great primary history spine for Ancient Israel.......2005-03-23
We use a literature approach to homeschooling, preferring actual historical texts, or such texts that have been adapted for children, when possible. We attempted to go through the actual Old Testament in a year, but it was too much. This book turned out to be the perfect solution. We still like to include actual OT readings, but we can cover far more history in detail at a faster pace when using this book as our primary spine. It also includes the later history of Israel, the time after the close of the Old Testament leading to the fall of Jerusalem. I do not know any other book for children including this later history. Anyway, this book is a great read-aloud and we have enjoyed it immensely in our homeschooling. The illustrations also, are very informative.
A GREAT Church History Book!.......2005-03-23
Our Young Folks Josephus is a great book for children. It covers church history from Abraham to the fall of Jerusalem, yet presents it with simple words so children can easily understand it. The author, Flavius Josephus, was born in Jerusalem in A.D. 37. His father was a priest, & he got a marvelous education. By the time he was sixteen, the priests consulted him whenever they couldn't agree on tough questions. In A.D. 63 he visited Rome & liberated some Jewish prisoners the governor had sent there. He wrote many books. He died about A.D. 95. Josephus himself was present at most of the latter events in this book, & he writes in great detail. The book also tells more about the life of this extraordinary man. He writes the whole story, & does not leave anything out, which is rather exciting. In fact, I think the story would be more interesting if William Shepard, the person who edited the story into a children's edition, wouldn't have taken out so many of the details. Never the less, I would give this book a very high rating. -- (Written by an 11-year old boy who LOVED this book!)

Book Description
This renowned reference book has served scholars, pastors, students, and those interested in the background of the New Testament for years. The insight given into the Essene community, the destruction of Jerusalem and the interpretations and traditions of the Old Testament in first century Judaism is invaluable. The outlook of Josephus, a late first century Pharisee and historian, on Jesus and the New Testament documents is enlightening and provocative. As an original reference, The Works of Josephus is essential to a full understanding of the first century, the time of Christ and the New Testament.
Complete and unabridged, this is the best one-volume edition of the classic translation of JosephusÂ' works. The entire text has been reset in modern, easy-to-read type; numbering corresponding to that used in the Loeb edition has been added to the text; and citations and cross-references have been updated from Roman numerals to Arabic numbers. The complete text and notes of the four volume set are included in this edition. The indexes have been corrected and expanded, and maps have been added.

I believe a very accurate portrayal of the life and times of the first century ad. A good book of comparison for religious research.
The Works of Josephus.......2007-07-01
Great condition, quick delivery. This is an important source of information about the early church and the Roman occupation of the Middle East as seen through the eyes of a non-Christian and non-Roman historian of the day. It helps one understand the politics, culture, and issues of the times. I have barely begun to read it, but have been been impressed with what I have read so far.
Great source of information.......2007-03-09
Josephus is a great source for information about Biblical times. The format is similar to the Bible, but the language is not quite as clear as most of the common translations. I would recommend it as a historical companion to Biblical study.
Great Translation.......2007-02-09
This reads pretty well for someone who is interested in actually reading what Josephus wrote which was my goal. I highly suggest it.
The Works of Josephus.......2007-01-10
This is an essential work for understanding the political dynamics of Roman Palestine in New Testament times, and is one of the very few contemporary accounts that we have on the subject. It appears to be as comprehensive an edition as its title indicates, and the translation is accurate and thorough. Its one drawback is the difficulty of reading the fine print--a necessary compromise for a one-volume edition.

Book Description
This study reconstructs the life of Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor responsible for the execution of Jesus. The first section provides the historical and archaeological background. The following chapters look at six first-century authors: Philo, Josephus and the four gospel writers. Each chapter asks how Pilate is being used as a literary character in each work, why each author describes Pilate in a different way, and what this tells us about the relationship between each author and the Roman state.

Dispelling the Cliched Viewpoints.......2007-06-26
This is a very refreshing and compelling study, trenchantly argued and comprehensively researched. Do not believe what the History Channel and other media outlets propound; read and assimilate the facts.
A Powerful Piece on Pilate.......2001-10-05
At last, a well argued, clear, thoughful and incisive academic book on Pilate. Bond has a clear grasp of first-century culture, both Roman and Jewish, and handles texts highly effectively. As yet, this book is the serious historical piece on Pilate that has no competition over its academic credentials.
