4 out of 5 stars A great starting point.......2007-06-26

With most new products you have to start somewhere and for those that are familiar with SP2003 but have no idea with 2007 or are new to SPS2007 then this is a great starting point to learn the architecture behind it all a reference guide to assist when you not 100% sure on doing something as an administrator.

4 out of 5 stars Not for developers.......2007-05-13

Great book for pre-sales and administrators. But too much information in this book does not give crispy answers to questions

3 out of 5 stars Sharepoint encyclopedia...........2007-05-05

It discusses everything you need to know with regard to MOSS 2007 but never really makes a point or stands out in any area. I read it and I feel like I am reading an infomercial about it and at times it lays out things you can do but it is not focused or useful in terms of diving into Sharepoint functionality or pointing out ways to actually get anything satisfying accomplished.

5 out of 5 stars if you use MOSS 2007, you need this book!.......2007-04-11

This is the "real" documentation for MS Office sharepoint server 2007. I believe they should have included a pdf version with each licensed version of the server.

2 out of 5 stars Contributing Authors Make it Worthwhile.......2007-04-11

When the "principle" author turns the writing reins over to others, the contents of this book becomes worthwhile. Unfortunately, that does not happen often enough. In reading this book I am reminded of the Calvin and Hobbes cartoon where Hobbes asks Calvin why he is not going to school. Calvin replies that he is just going to go on talk shows and hype himself.

Don't buy into the hype. If you do, you are going to feel very lonely with this Administrator's Companion. Scot Hillier's books, although they have a developer focus, offer a lot more than this book does for the administrator.

2 out of 5 stars Misses out on the important patterns.......2007-08-07

This book is a complete beginner's handbook for enterprise patterns.

1) The "Mapping to Relational Database Patterns" section discusses patterns that are completely intuitive. I recall logically coming to this conclusions when I started programming in Visual Basic in 99. Nothing new in this section.

2) The "Concurrency" section is criminal in nature and assumes that the application runs on high-cost server. Process-per-session? Thread-per-request? Come on!! Has the author missed out on the Reactor, Proactor and Active Object patterns (he does reference ACE but only as a reference). These patterns have been recognized as not scalable in the late 90s.

3)The distribution patterns are clearly incomplete and desire a lot of details.

If you're just starting out,as a System Architect :-), you'll find this useful. Otherwise, use MSDN or ACE for enterprise patterns.

5 out of 5 stars Must have reference for all developers.......2007-07-16

Even if you don't do "Enterprise Application" development, this book is a must have in your library. If you have been developing for more than a couple of years and you haven't seen 1/2 of the patterns in this book, then you are probably doing something wrong and this book could greatly help you.

Even if you do know 1/2 or more of the patterns in this book it is a great reference to the details of these patterns. Unless you are a Sophomore Software Engineering Student I'd recommend this book over the GoF book. Gof is a must have too, but if you can only have one. Get this one!

5 out of 5 stars Must read.......2007-04-05

This is a must read book if you are a developer, architect or in anyway related to technology.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference for building business apps.......2007-03-13

For me, this book is an invaluable reference for building business apps.

Want help choosing a framework? Want some guidance for solving common business problems? These patterns help solve these kinds of problems.

NOTE: I have tried to find other sources for these patterns, and I have only found Fowlers website, which is really only a summary and recommends purchasing the book.

This book has examples in both Java and C#. You can certainly use these patterns in .NET.

Under .NET you are not actually forced to use the Table Model. I think the purpose of this book is to help you realize this.

There are frameworks for .NET that use the Domain Model and Data Mapper patterns, but you would never know this unless you were familiar with the patterns in this book.

For me, reading this book didn't allow me to write new code, but it did allow me to understand my choice to use a particular framework/technique over another.

4 out of 5 stars Educates you on Enterprise Architecture.......2007-03-10

As a newcomer to enterprise architecture this book educated me on possibilities for decisions to be made in designing an enterprise architect. It will also give you a language for describing existing characteristics of an existing enterprise application which may use some combination of the patterns describe in this book. The discussion of where to keep session state for a webapp was particularly helpful to me.

4 out of 5 stars Good for Dimentional Modeling.......2007-10-05

I did not get chance to read it, but everybody says it the best source to learn Dimensional Modeling. I our project, the DBA is doing it.

5 out of 5 stars A tool rather than a toolkit.......2007-07-03

This book delivers exactly what it says. Except that word "toolkit" in its title - you'd better think about this book being a single tool, not a whole toolkit. Ralph Kimball actually has a whole lot of books on data warehousing published, this is one of them, a tool in the toolkit. This one seems like a good starting point to the entire series, and it only shows a single facet - the dimensional modeling.

The book explains the basic principles of creating dimensions and fact tables in a data warehouse (assuming a relational star schema), and then dedicates a chapter per industry to show how those principles apply to sales, order management, CRM, accounting, human resources, financial services, telecoms, logistics, education, health care, e-commerce, insurance etc. Each one appears to be significantly different from the others.

There is a couple of teaser chapters starting with "we have that other book covering this, but will brief you out". Nice and makes you want to read the other books too.

The book also includes guidelines to the warehouse building process, in terms like "know your business sponsor", "talk to your users" and so on. Difficult to say what it has to do with dimensional modeling, perhaps it's included in all the books in the series.

There is no word on software, hardware, physical architecture, tuning or performance in this book. It is a textbook in dimensional modeling, period.

The book is written clearly, has a handful of simple and uniform diagrams and is easy to follow. It only leaves you wondering just how exactly large is the whole data warehouse area, how many pieces you need to collect yet.

Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Building a Data Warehouse.......2007-03-09

Excelent book, it shows how to build a good data warehouse by using the best patterns. I recommend the book to you, it is not as boring as another books regarding this issue, in addition it is cheap.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-03-08

This is a great book. Wish there was something like this for relational(3NF) modeling as well.

1 out of 5 stars very bad.... .......2006-12-11

whatever pioneer or genius he is in the DW industry, the book is pretty bad, i wouldn't recommend it at all. the way he tries to convey concepts, explain techniques....
very bad organization, not clear but confusing sometimes, and very poor logical flow... he tries to make a big deal out of DW, when in fact it's not such a fancy or intellect intensive subject. very simple concepts are even hard to understand. someone else would be able to write a book more powerful and straight to the point in 100 pages MAX, and be much more useful....
it sucks when leaders don't know how to express themselves, maybe he was looking forward to have readers learn enough in DW to get projects started but not be able to do squat, and get some business from consulting...

5 out of 5 stars Best Resource for CCNA Test Takers........2007-09-07

This is an excellent in-depth resource for those wanting to complete the current Cisco CCNA certification test. The information in this book covers every scenario on the test in detail, except for the labs, where an understanding of the command structure comes in to play. It should be noted that the test will be updated significantly in 11/2007, so this book may have some outdated information or be missing some new facts for the revised test at that point. But for now, this is the best resource for CCNA test takers to date.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to get CCNA........2007-07-13

This library is an excellent guide for peoples want get CCNA certification , very simple to understand and give you more than one way to learn. I really recomend.

4 out of 5 stars One of the most cost effective and comprehensive resources to study for the CCNA exams!.......2007-07-08

One of the most cost effective and comprehensive resources to study for the CCNA 640-801, ICND 640-811 and the INTRO 640-821 exams! The CCNA Official Exam Certification Library, 2nd Edition, ISBN: 1-58720-169-0, by Wendell Odom is published by Cisco Press.

The two book set, is one of the most comprehensive CCNA resources to date. Currently, Cisco offers the CCNA candidate with two exam formats in preparing for their CCNA certification. These are the INTRO 640-821 and the ICND 640-811 exam or the one exam format: CCNA 640-801. The CCNA Exam Certification library is packaged in a two book set. The exam candidate can study for the CCNA INTRO (640-821) Exam and receive a firm understanding of Network Fundamentals, Operating Cisco Devices, LAN Switching, TCP/IP, and Wide-Area Networking and then take the INTRO 640-821 exam.

Also, if they have hands-on working experience with the Cisco switches and routers they can utilize the CCNA Self-Study CCNA ICND Exam Certification Guide to study for the one-exam format: CCNA 640-801 exam or the second exam of the two test format: ICND: 640-811. This book is a more in depth resource that focuses on LAN Switching, Spanning Tree Protocol, Virtual LANS and Trunking, TCP/IP, RIP, IGRP, and Static Route Concepts and Configuration, OSPF and EIGRP Concepts and Configuration, Advanced Routing Protocol and TCIP/IP topics, Wide-Area Networks, ISDN and Dial-on-Demand Routing, Frame Relay and Network Security.

The two certification guides overlap in their content, but it will be clear to the reader that the CCNA ICND book goes in-depth in the topics listed above. I would suggest to begin with the CCNA INTRO guide and when the topics overlap in the two books I would switch to the CCNA ICND guide only after the candidate has a clear understanding of the particular content (i.e., LAN Switching). By performing this technique will ensure that you have fully understood material and will be well prepared for the exam (s).

There is a companion CD-ROM that accompanies the book set that contains more than 400 practice questions for the ICND, INTRO, and CCNA exams, including simulation-based questions. The CD also contains flash card questions, hands-on exercises and a light edition of the NetSim LE network simulation software. The full version of the Network Sim software is: ISBN: 1587201313. The certification library book set also comes with the CCNA Video Mentor Library Edition. The CD contains 3 select video labs from the full version of the CCNA Video Mentor; ISBN 1-58720-168-2, by Wendell Odom.

Updates to the CCNA Self-Study CCNA INTRO Exam Certification Guide can be found at: www.ciscopress.com/1587200945, as well as, for the CCNA ICND Exam Certification Guide can be found at: www.ciscopress.com/158720083X.

According to the Cisco training website, [...] the last date to take the CCNA 640-801, ICND 640-811 and the INTRO 640-821 exams is on November 6, 2007. The CCNA candidate would be extremely prepared utilizing this resource! I give these materials 4 out of 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Good book with clear explanations.......2007-06-29

Both of these books are structured very well and everything is explained clearly in a easy-to-follow manner. My only caveat is that newbies to routers (like me) may have difficulty passing the exam (the single 640-801 one) with just these texts. The CD-ROM test engine is excellent, and resembles the actual test. I also used Transcender software (a good tool for review and like the test itself), tests from TestKing (much easier than the tests), an Exam Cram book (not like the actual exam at all), another test package, and 2 different computer-based video training packages. That said, I barely passed the exam, even though I feel that I understand the concepts and details pretty well. I could quickly subnet in my head and many questions I could answer in five seconds. But some of the questions were extremely tricky. And it took me 10 minutes to get the router simulation to work properly -- it didn't work as smoothly and easily as it did in the tutorial before the exam. It's not an easy test, by any means. I spent over 10 minutes doing the simulation when I should have had it done in 2.
I may not have done as well as I thought I would because I was afraid I would run out of time, but I ended up with over 20 minutes to spare. However, you can't go back and change your answers, which is a shame for how I test, because I like to put my gut reaction first and think it over later after my mind is refreshed. You definitely have to move through the test quickly.
These books and the CD-ROM included with it were the main reasons I passed. You can't be too prepared for this one. Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2007-06-25

If you read these books cover to cover and do the labs in the appendicies, they are a great resource towards your CCNA certification. I do however, recommend that you also suppliment your study materials with hardware,if available, and some additional pracice questions and tests.

The tests in the back of the book are nothing compared to the actual cert. And the netsim, what a joke. Not even worth loading onto your computer. I suggest another program to work on.

For your certs, I recommend you have a strong understanding of switching(STP, VTP, VLAN's, etc.), ACL's, and be able to subnet in your head. No ISDN on the test for me.

Good Luck

1 out of 5 stars Get ready to slash your wrists!.......2004-04-20

This is one of the worst texts I've ever read! The author writes as though the reader totally understands every complex example presented. This is amazing because some parts are very simple and easy to understand. The calculations and formulas are almost to impossible to comprehend. Don't waste your time with this book! There are better, more comprehesive communication networks books out there. This text is by NO means "A First Course"!

5 out of 5 stars Informative, good pace and valuable to network beginners.......2003-06-01

Excellent read. The explanations were clear with lots of examples. Teaches network basics as well as intermediate topics. Includes historical facts and future projections.
Highly recommended for beginners and refreshers.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!.......2002-09-30

this book is absolutely worthless. i actually took a communication class with the author of this book at UC Berkeley, and it is hard for me to decide who's worse: the book or prof. walrand. the entire class hated the book, even the TA's were not able to help us understand it because they didn't understand the book either. this is absolutely the worst book i've ever read. the prof knew the whole class hated him, so he didn't even dare to show up during the finals.
any other book in networking would be better.

1 out of 5 stars Bent over a table.......2002-05-02

This book was the absolute worst textbook I have ever encountered. Unfortunately, I needed it for my first Master's degree class in Communications. Absolutely unclear in its explainations and problems and questions that seem to come out of the blue. The appendices were useless is describing queuing theory and statistics. The entire class hated this book, but had to buy it new. I'm embarrassed to say that the professor for the course reviewed it.

This book is a huge waste of money and material.

5 out of 5 stars Very detailed material but also very CLEAR !.......2007-10-16

I took the exam on Sep 17, 2007 and I passed both of them.
730 on Essential
840 on IT Technician.
I would say that almost every answer on the tests can be found in the book. If you remember and understand every single word in the book, you will not need to do the practice exam, you will pass guarantee it.
I would say the practice exam is easier than on the real exam. You MIGHT want to buy additional study guide, like Exam Cram, so that you can work on hard, even harder questions in relate to the A+ exam. Of course if you memorize every single word in the book, about 1150 pages, you won't need no practice exam, lol.
After all, this book worths the money. The author writes the book in simple language but still pertain to his technical knowledge, which makes it easier to understand and absorb. I strongly recommend anyone who is going to take the A+ exam to read this book first.

3 out of 5 stars GOOD BOOK - PLEASE READ IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO GET CERTIFIED.......2007-10-15

Hi guys: Please read carefully, I really want to help those wanting to get A+ Certified to do it right. This is a good book the reason i gave it 3 stars are:
1st the book has some errors and i can tell you that it doesn't cover a 100% what's coming in the exam. (trust me i just passed essentials this morning)
2nd the Historical/Essentials/IT Technician divisions are worthless. DO NOT TRUST THEM AND STUDY ONLY ESSENTIALS PARTS FOR THE ESSENTIAL EXAM FOR EXAMPLE!! study all the chapter thoroughly
The book helped me a lot but Im also an experience technician (5+yrs) who just decided to take the test. I DO NOT RECOMMEND TRYING TO TAKE THE TEST USING THIS BOOK OR ANY BOOK IF YOU DONT HAVE ANY RELEVANT PREVIOUS COMPUTER KNOWLEDGE OR PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE IN TECHNICAL SUPPORT ROLES!!(GET YOURSELF INTO TRAINING PROGRAM, REMEMBER IS NOT JUST PASSING THE EXAM IS REALLY KNOWING WHAT TO DO AND WHERE TO START) AND I ALSO DO NOT RECOMMEND TO THIS BOOK AS THE ONLY STUDY SOURCE!! You will need comprehensive knowledge and previous experience to pass this (unless you are a genius!) and I also recommend CompTIA Press books over any other books, is worth it and you will be on a safer path to pass the exam

5 out of 5 stars A+ Certification All-in-One Exam Guide, Sixth Edition (A+ Certification All in One Exam.......2007-10-09

This is a excellant study guide. Easy to understand and well written. I would recomend it to anyone studing for A+.

4 out of 5 stars Very good book, passed the exam.......2007-10-07

This book was well written, and because of it I passed my exams. There were a couple spelling mistakes, but they are few and far between. Its getting a little bit outdated though, but its still enough to get you to pass. I would definitely read this book, but also have some supplementary reading too that would fill in what this book is missing.

5 out of 5 stars The "Alpha Geek" Rules! .......2007-10-05

Winner!! Mike Meyers writes the perfect book covering all objectives on the A+ Certification exam. Don't be intimidated by the size of this book. The book is a great read and covers everything in a very organized manner. I was able to pass both exams on the first try using this book and the A+ Passport book for a quick review before taking the exams. If you carefully read through the material, you should be able to pass with no problems. I can see now why so many technical college (including mine) in my state use this book as the main study guide. A job well done Mr. Meyers.

5 out of 5 stars A review of the reviews..........2007-10-13

I can't help but respond to some of the reviews about the Little Black Book of Connections. The people who wrote bad reviews all seem to point to the fact that the book contains clever ways to get you to the author's site and register. Isn't that the point ? The first step to making a connection ? Making the first contact ?

This book is so well written, I can't believe these people read the book and that's all they can say is, "He's trying to get my information so he can sell me."

People who don't like being "sold" to, will never be able to sell. My advice to anyone considering buying this book...If you want some networking "gold" buy this book. If you don't want to be "sold" to, keep your hourly wage job and hope that Medicare and Social Security is still around when you retire broke.

Gitomer is such a fun writer, his style and examples make you smile and laugh out loud at times. He keeps your attention and gives you great calls to action to get you doing something with what you are reading. I have read many of his books and this is a great quick read to get you going in making relationships work better for you. After you read this one, go and get Richard Abraham's book MR. SHMOOZE- The Art and Science of Selling Through Relationships to take it another level. A great investment in your personal library.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-09-11

Excellent book on networking. One of the very few that will talk about giving before receiving; more than a networking book it's a book that'll teach you to build long lasting friendships. These will eventually help you move ahead in life.

4 out of 5 stars Great Little Black Handbook of Connections.......2007-09-05

Jeffrey Gitomer is a professional at life. He provided many great insights into connecting and networking through a collection of lists of his own "proverbs" and altruisms. I doubt anyone can read this all at once; but the book is great when you read a few lists until you find something that really strikes you, and then practice it for a few weeks before going back to this great reference work. Very good!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good Book for a Study Guide.......2007-10-09

Some of the reviews for this book are far too harsh. I do agree that the first version of the book had numerous errors, but the second version corrected most of them. I used this book as my primary study guide for the 70-536 exam and I passed the exam easily. I considered using an alternative practice exam solution, but the software that came with the book was adequate, and in some instances, more difficult than the actual exam.

With that being said, I too agree that this book alone will (most likely) not enable you to pass the exam. This book is a *study guide*, not a *cheat sheet*. The goal of the book is to introduce you to exam topics and prepare you to solve exam problems using the .NET Framework App Foundation. This book is intended for candidates that have experience with previous or current versions of the Framework, who wish to condition that knowledge to pass an exam. The authors inform you of what level of skills you should have at the beginning of every chapter.

As with any technical book, it can use a little work. Chapter 9 'Installing Applications' should be considered for revision to flow better for the reader. But even with it's choppy flow, the information in chapter 9 is quite useful.

In summary; I read it, I passed, I'd recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars gr8.......2007-09-28

It's a gr8 product, the only setback was that Microsoft has just one book for VB as well as C# coders, so half of the book is useless for me

2 out of 5 stars Context Challenged.......2007-09-20

I am a Java programmer with no background in .Net, so I thought I would try to get certified as a way to learn the subject matter in a comprehensive manner. This book is not a good introduction to creating applications for Windows for a couple of reasons. First, much of the information in this book is badly out of context. For example, the first lab in Chapter 9 gives complete, detailed instructions on how to create a project in Microsoft Visual Studio. This lab would have been more useful as the first lab in the first chapter (obviously). In addition, many security related items are brought up in early chapters, but discussion of them is deferred to Chapter 11. Second, the book assumes familiarity with Windows concepts or products without explanation (which, in a "Foundation" book, I believe it shouldn't do). A discussion on remote components assumes a familiarity with IIS. I have finished chapters on Application Domains and Services and Installing and Configuring Applications and I still don't have a good idea of what a .dll file is, or how to actually create a componentized application.

That said, the book is not a total loss, it just requires considerable effort on the part of a novice to understand the information.

3 out of 5 stars Good enough to help me pass the test, about all.......2007-09-01

After reading this book cover to cover and taking the practice test many, many times I was able to pass the test on my first try.

What really pissed me off (along with my co-workers) is the amount of errors both in the book and the practice test. The book has so many typo's and errors the there is 2 (yea TWO) knowledge base articles for the errata. About 15% of the practice test questions (out of 300+) were just WRONG. Either the answers were not correct, or there were no correct answers.

Ok, enough of the rant. Like I said, this book did help me to pass the test, so for that I give it 3 stars. Had i failed the test it would have been more like 1 star.

Take that for what it is. Since this is the ONLY book for the test, you are kinda stuck... Just be ready for errors and frustration.

4 out of 5 stars Good book but you need more -- This exam is not a breeze so please do not under estimate.......2007-08-25

First, I appeared for MCTS 70-529 (Distributed Applications) and I was able to clear in the very first attempt with 856 score -- not an easy one as it covers complex topics. Then I attempted MCTS 70-536 thinking that it is easier than 70-529. But definitely not an easy one either and I got a score of 771. It is voluminous and a beast as it covers lots of topics, right from types to code access security, collections, threading, interoperability, serialization, instrumentation, internationalization and more.

As you can imagine, a single book is not enough. You need to consult MSDN documentation heavily and frequently as most methods are overloaded with so many variations. And plus I suggest some other question bank (such as transcender, measure up, etc) in addition to the ones provided with the book. Question bank provided with book is good but not enough to cover all the tricks.

You can skip other question banks only if you are extremely .NET savvy. Which I suppose many people will not have exposure to so many topics in their careers does not matter with how many years of IT experience.

This exam is definitely not a breeze. So please prepare seriously if you intend to gain knowledge and pass this exam.

Book Description

Master hands-on CCNA skills with a network simulator that lets you build your own network, with up to 200 devices

Cisco CCNA Network Simulator is a boxed software product derived from the previously self-published Boson NetSim from Boson Software. It provides users with a means to develop hands-on skills at the CCNA level without the investment in expensive hardware. The software, which includes the Boson Router Simulator, was designed to give users the skills needed to pass the new CCNA 800 series exams (640-801, 640-811, and 640-821). The combination of Cisco IOS and Catalyst simulated command line interface (CLI) establishes a foundation of knowledge that is integral to CCNA success, both in taking the CCNA exams and in one's daily job as a CCNA professional. The title includes a drag-and-drop Network Designer that supports up to 200 devices using 45 different device models, including 40 different router models and 2 Catalyst switch models. Users can have up to 200 active Telnet sessions configuring devices inside the simulator. This unique feature allows users to create their own lab topologies, freeing them for the first time from the configurations locked in place by the software vendor. Currently no other network simulation package offers this much versatility and support.

Cisco CCNA Network Simulator also includes a comprehensive lab menu that contains more than 100 structured labs for users to run. More than 20 advanced-level labs from Wendell Odom's CCNA texts allow users to perform complex tasks on networks that combine all the various CCNA technologies.

Boson Software, Inc. is a software company specializing in products for test preparation and the development of hands-on skills. Boson is a Cisco Learning Partner, and offers practice tests on every major certification in the IT industry, as well many outside the IT market. Boson Software is headquartered in Tampa, FL.

5 out of 5 stars this is the best network simulator for ccna.......2007-07-16

This network simulater covers every thing that a ccna student will like to know about configuring cisco routers and passing his/her exams.I am very happy with the simulater and hope to pass my ccna exams after I have finished doing the labs,by the grace of God.

4 out of 5 stars CCNA Simular Works Great!.......2007-05-14

This is a great learning tool for anyone who is taking the CCNA curriculum. It works well. The only thing is that it does not support all of the router commands that are in the Cisco curriculum labs. I would find that a lot of times, I would get halfway through the lab and then it would not recognize a command. Other than this "glitch" or if you want to pay through the nose for the CCNP version it's still worth the money. I finished my Cisco curriculum with an A because of the practice labs and the labs included. It sure beats buying the real thing and playing with it. Especially if you want to save some money.

Buy it...You'll like it! :)

5 out of 5 stars good book.......2007-05-13

i ended up changing my careers to websphere application server.
did not get certified in ccna. i am sure this book will get you certified.

1 out of 5 stars Avoid this product.......2007-05-03

If you're trying to pass the CCNA exam (either the single exam or the two-part exam) I would recommend that you buy the Exam Certification Library from Cisco Press (which includes a "Lite" version of the CCNA Network Simulator) and bypass this offering. Then make sure that you get some time on real equipment, if at all possible. The bottom line on the full blown version is that it's not worth the $$$. I wish I'd read the reviews on this product before I bought it. It's true what others have said about the deficiencies of this product. If you're interested in really mastering things like Spanning tree protocol you'll not get that good feeling from this product. STP doesn't work outright! I'm a veteran of certification testing. In all, I've taken 15 tests covering various technologies from various vendors. I took the INTRO test (relying on the books in the Exam Certification Library and the NetSIM) and passed it easily. However, for the first time in my life, I failed a test when I took the ICND exam. I went through the simulator exercises twice before the exam. I read the book cover-to-cover twice before the exam. It's not that I'm a bad test taker. Before the ICND I was 14 for 14. The simulator simply didn't prepare me for the exam. Period.

5 out of 5 stars Great Teacher .......2007-03-16

This is a good investment for anyone new to configuring routers and switches. The labs are very good tools to teach you how to config and help you understand the reasons behind the command.

Book Description

Printed entirely in color, with helpful figures and syntax coloring to make code samples appear as they do in Visual Studio.

Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) is a key component of the .NET Framework 3.0, giving you the power to create richer and more compelling applications than you dreamed possible. Whether you want to develop traditional user interfaces or integrate 3D graphics, audio/video, animation, dynamic skinning, rich document support, speech recognition, or more, WPF enables you to do so in a seamless, resolution-independent manner. Windows Presentation Foundation Unleashed is the authoritative book that covers it all, in a practical and approachable fashion, authored by .NET guru and Microsoft developer Adam Nathan.

· Covers everything you need to know about Extensible Application Markup Language (XAML)

· Examines the WPF feature areas in incredible depth: controls, layout, resources, data binding, styling, graphics, animation, and more

· Features a chapter on 3D graphics by Daniel Lehenbauer, lead developer responsible for WPF 3D

· Delves into non-mainstream topics: speech, audio/video, documents, bitmap effects, and more

· Shows how to create popular UI elements, such as features introduced in the 2007 Microsoft Office System: Galleries, ScreenTips, custom control layouts, and more

· Demonstrates how to create sophisticated UI mechanisms, such as Visual Studio-like collapsible/dockable panes

· Explains how to develop and deploy all types of applications, including navigation-based applications, applications hosted in a Web browser, and applications with great-looking non-rectangular windows

· Explains how to create first-class custom controls for WPF

· Demonstrates how to create hybrid WPF software that leverages Windows Forms, ActiveX, or other non-WPF technologies

· Explains how to exploit new Windows Vista features in WPF applications

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Guide.......2007-10-09

Windows Vista is not only a great Operating System but also includes advanced graphics capabilities. Microsoft has developed new languages and frameworks that target Vista. Windows Presentation Foundation (XAML) helps you to build true, classic Vista style applications for Windows and Web environments. Many developers are eager to learn about this new technology and they are in search of good learning material. Adam Nathan has indeed done a good job by examining the complete features and functionalities of WPF in his latest book "Windows Presentation Foundation Unleashed."

The book consists of five parts including an Appendix. The first part provides a solid explanation to WPF, XAML and some of the important concepts in WPF. The second part introduces you to the controls shipped with WPF and various features, such as Sizing, Positioning, Transforming elements, and Panels. The final chapter discusses the deployment aspects of a WPF application. The third part provides a comprehensive overview about the various features, such as Resources, Data Binding, Styles, Templates, Skins and Themes. I feel that these chapters will be of great use for advanced developers.

Some of the interesting features of the book are colored screenshots and source codes, useful tips and FAQs at relevant pages, and additional reference material under the banner Dig Deeper. I feel that colored screenshots help a reader to taste the real essence of the code output. Moreover, the author has labeled certain portions of the source code, such as in Page 289, which will surely help a reader to understand the code much better. I must say that the book is highly code intensive. All the concepts have been examined only with codes and not using any development environment. I believe that tools such as Orcas and Expression Blend were not available at the time of the release of the book.

Part 4 explores the usage of Graphics (2D/3D), Animation and Audio/Video speech capabilities of WPF with the help of complete source code along with relevant explanation. I am amazed to see the kind of effort the author has put in to compile the facts in a meaningful manner. The final part delves deep into some of the advanced topics such as Interoperability, User custom controls and development of layout with custom panels.

The source code for all the examples along with complete table of contents, sample chapter and a list of errata can be accessed from the publisher's website. Moreover, you can also view the related information on the website maintained by the author at http://adamnathan.net/wpf/. The book also includes one Appendix which contains a list of tools and utilities available for WPF development. I would suggest the author publishes information about new tools available currently, such as Expression Blend on the Publisher's website so that readers can know about them as well.

I feel that the book will be of real value for all developers who wish to master the nuances of Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF).

I recently came to know that Adam's Silverlight Unleashed book will be released around the week of October 12. I look forward to read his book.

5 out of 5 stars Great unleashing of WPF.......2007-07-16

From Resource binding to databinding and beyond, pretty much every bit of WPF that you need to know to get started well is covered.

The "full color" is awesome. The examples are great. The explanations are very clear with great comparisons to the "old" winforms way of doing things.

For beginners or expert developers, this is the only guide you'll need to learn WPF. Excelent print quality, code markup as shown in Visual Studio, and complete information from scratch.
DataBinding, 2D drawning and animations chapters, are really impressive.
