5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2000-05-02

Of course dictionaries aren't usually meant to be read through like novels. Even though I haven't done that with this book, I would if I had the time. This is a must have for any student of the Word of God. In addition to the definitions, the book also gives good insight on the topics, placing them in their historical context. Zondervan has done it again!

If you are a Prophet, have the gift of prophecy or seeking just to know about the prophetic this is it. I have been desiring clarity of what I have been hearing from the Holy Spirit about the prophetic and this is one tool that you cannot do without. There's nothing like a book that gives scriptures with its definitions and not only has my vocabulary increased about the prophetic but this book has been useful in bringing clarity to the symbolic language in my dreams from God. Thanks to the author for having the heart and courage to share what God has truly given!

I thank the Lord for Paula and others who have paid the price and counted the cost to get this book out and others like it. The material is there use it. You do not have to go digging for it if it is already available for you. I know she had to go through a lot of trials and testings to get this book out from the enemy! Thank the Lord He has opened up the door to make this available to His children. This will be a wonderful tool to help in study and Dream interpretation. 5 stars... should be 10 stars! Thank you Paula, God Bless!

I have looked at a lot of books about dreams and symolizism. Although this book is detailed, it has a lot of information for the price. I guess I was ready for a little more depth. If you prefer something with less reading, consider Ira Mulligan's Understanding the Dreams You Dream. There are not many choices in a dictionary type reference for dream interpreting.

    Book Description

In 1517, Martin Luther's legendary Ninety-five Theses set in motion a chain of events that fundamentally altered European history. The resulting Reformation of the sixteenth century proved to be one of the most important and far-reaching phenomena of an era marked by dramatic religious and social upheaval. A critical chapter in the history of Christian thought, the movement provoked political, social, and cultural transformations that profoundly changed the Western world. The Oxford Encyclopedia of the Reformation is the first major reference to cover the immense subject of the Reformation in its entirety. Setting the issues of theology and ecclesiology within the broader context of the social and intellectual history of the time, it is the most authoritative reference available on early modern European society as a whole. The Encyclopedia is a unique compendium of contemporary scholarship focusing on the complete range of religious and social changes wrought by the Reformation-- including not only issues of church polity and theology but also related developments in politics, economics, demographics, art, and literature. It is an unparalleled source of information on the personalities and events of the era, with broad coverage ranging from biographies to extensive treatments of topics such as Lutheranism, women, law, the Augsburg Confession, music, the Holy Roman Empire, peasants, the Bible, persecution, and literacy. Offering exhaustive interdisciplinary and international coverage of all aspects of the Reformation, this is the ultimate reference on the subject. Transcending the bounds of denominational encyclopedias and dictionaries of Reformation history currently available, it offers the only comprehensive picture of western Europe and the British Isles, along with southern Europe, Scandinavia, and east-central Europe in the early modern period. It is the first source scholars, students, and general readers in any discipline will reach for when studying the Reformation.

      Book Description

English has changed dramatically since the introduction of the King James Bible. The original words often fail to make sense but the beauty of the poetic style reaffirms your love for the King James Bible. This Book will help you make sense of the often archaic language. A delightful and authoritative guide, this source book illuminates the 1611 text for the 1990's readers. Fascinating, brief articles explain over 800 terms of the KJV that have either fallen into disuse or have taken on a dramatically different meaning. Includes a comprehensive index of over 2600 entries.

2 out of 5 stars I agree about this book being prejudiced!.......2000-08-15

So much caution needs to be exercised if this book is used as a resource, because of the subtle distortions of truth. After studying the issue of different bible versions for many years, I am now understanding how important it is to meditate upon the precise words God would have His children to remember. If this dictionary is not studied with discernment, it will have the effect of causing a person to have doubts about the integrity of the King James Bible. To give a balanced viewpoint of understanding the language used in the King James Version, I HIGHLY recommend a better dictionary with MANY more "archaic" words in it. It is written by Laurence M. Vance and is titled, "Archaic Words and the King James Bible." However, don't get duped into assuming everything he writes is trustworthy. "The Other Side of Calvinism," by Vance is extensively written but unfortunately a great example of what "itching ears" seeking self-gratification of the senses desires.

4 out of 5 stars Supplement with The Complete Guide to the Book of Proverbs........2000-01-12

This is a reprint of The Bible Word Book originally written in 1960. It gives interesting background on many Old English words and points out the many bloopers in the King James translation. Most famous of these is the "unicorn" which occurs 9 times and which is properly corrected to "wild ox" in modern versions. If you would like to compare the KJV to 5 contemporary versions, read THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO THE BOOK OF PROVERBS by Cody Jones. Besides an in-depth commentary, it features 6 translations of Proverbs side-by-side: New King James (1982), New Revised Standard (1990), New Century (1991), New International Version (1983), King James (1611) and New Living Translation (1996).

5 out of 5 stars Must have reference for KJV users.......1999-06-07

Many words used in the King James Version have a different meaning today than they had in 1611. It is important to know what the words meant then instead of what they mean now. If you read the KJV thinking the words have the same meaning, you will misinterpret many passages of scripture.

An earlier reviewer pointed out that this book does not cover Elizabethan grammar. I do not think that is a fair criticism. If you read Shakespeare in High School the grammar of the KJV should not be a problem.

3 out of 5 stars Covers a number of words, but the definitions prejudiced.......1999-01-08

This book covers many KJV words which are currently used but their meanings are changed. I wanted to know KJV in the positive way through this book. But, when I began to read this book, this book disappointed me. Because, the cover of this book said this book would give you clear understanding on the KJV, but through the contents of the book the author praised RSV or ASV. I think RSV is also a good translation, but, if the author prefers RSV to KJV, he must be sincere to choose the title of the book.

      5 out of 5 stars gave as a gift.......2007-01-09

This book is way too deep for me personally but I gave it as a gift to my brother, who is a theology student headed for seminary, and he loved it.

5 out of 5 stars Distinguished Discourses on Subjects related to the 4 Gospels.......2006-08-25

This is book one of a four volume dictionary of the New Testament, and it's terrific. Most bible dictionaries are single volume works which encompass the entire canon of scripture. But because this book covers only the four gospels, the scholars were allowed to turn in more detailed articles. Many of them are outstanding. I really liked Ben Witherington's lengthy discussion about The Birth of Christ, and Harold Hoehner's Chronology of the life of Christ.

The article on the Geography and History of Israel was also a distinguished article, as were the articles on the death of Christ and the theology of Mark's Gospel.

This book represents the best of young evangelical scholarship circa 1992. This is a resource that can be read cover to cover, or it can be consulted occasionally when researching a sermon or a report.

I should also say that the other three volumes are also outstanding, and you can purchase them as a set, or you can purchase them (along with other great IVP resources) on a CD-Rom for around $125.

You can also get two Old Testament dictionaries covering the Pentateuch and the Historical Books. I can't say enough about the value of these books. Thumbs way up!!!

      1 out of 5 stars Tecnical Quality.......2006-03-25

The tecnical quality of the book is not good, it should have bound, not just glued together. My book is already starting to tear apart after less than a month, even though I handled it careful.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource!.......2006-02-05

I have had my own copy of this reference book for about 10 years, and recently purchased it as a gift for someone else. I am a minister and this is my favorite resource for background and information related to Jesus and the Gospels. I have 2 of the other books in the series and like this one the best. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes to read and dig a bit deeper into scripture.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource - but don't make it the only one.......2001-08-27

The information in this book is comprehensive, well-referenced (including mention of non-scriptural resources related to the period), and quite absorbing. I found myself moving from one cross reference to another, avidly seeking the information which "fleshed out" the accounts, and made the meanings of scriptural texts, even those I had studied a number of times, richer and more complete. The relation of gospel texts, particularly Jesus's parables, miracles and the like, to historical perspectives is well done. There also is a valuable section relating how to use gospel texts in preparing sermons. In total, it is a fine reference for placing Jesus's words in context, and understanding the actions of those with whom he dealt. (For example, look up the article on Pontius Pilate... his fear at "you are no friend of Caesar" has an interesting and very natural basis.) With this said, however, this valuable book should not be one's only reference for scripture study. My five stars are for the book as it is intended - a "dictionary," with extensive and often fascinating explanations. It is not sufficient for most scriptural exegesis or advanced New Testament study, particularly because it is strictly composed from an evangelical perspective. Many distinguished contemporary scholars (Raymond Brown, N.T. Wright, E.P. Sanders, to name a few), equally orthodox in their Christology, would have viewpoints that are far less literalist than this work provides. Just as two minor examples, the Dictionary sees no reason to doubt that the apostle Matthew was the author of the first gospel, and the idea that the visit of the Magi was completely, literally true (with no allowance for its being a midrash at all) is unquestioned. The entire approach in this work is extremely conservative. I would place this book on the shelf of anyone studying the gospels, but it would be one of at least five.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have for Resoration Historians.......2007-04-07

This reference is a must have for anyone interested in the American Reformation (Restoration) Movement of the 19th century, involving Alexander Campbell, Barton W. Stone, Walter Scott, et al. The churches which sprung from this movement are generally called "Church of Christ", "Christian Church", or "Disciples of Christ". The entries are thorough, understandable and well referenced, yet they don't overkill. Covers a broad range of related topics and people.

5 out of 5 stars Brings this Stone-Campbell movement together.......2006-07-27

Articles are brief in some cases and all can be read by a lay person. I recommend this collection of history of a denomination. It also has photos where possible.

5 out of 5 stars Massive Volume on the Restoration Movement.......2006-04-15

THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE STONE-CAMPBELL MOVEMENT is a massive volume on the people, events, theology, and churches involved in the Restoration Movement. The work covers nearly every facet of the movement from the beginnings with Alexander Campbell and Barton Stone to the various sects in the Restoration Movement such as the United Church of Christ, the mainline Churches of Christ, the International Churches of Christ, the Disciples of Christ, and many more.

This work is an encyclopedia and thus is a reference book than a book you would enjoy reading from cover to cover in your bed at night. However, I found the articles to be interesting. Each subject is in its alphebetical order and I found the bibliography to be very helpful indeed. The writers are fair and balanced on each subject written. There were a few flaws I found with the work in that it couldn't cover every person I felt they could have nonetheless the authors are to be commended for their labours.

Overall this is a solid work. Those interested in reading on the Restoration Movement as a whole or simply want to know where the Movement stands on various theological issues will find this book very helpful. A good read for disciples of Christ.

      5 out of 5 stars A Very Welcome Addition to Stone-Campbell Studies.......2005-03-07

The Churches of Christ, Christian Church and Disciples of Christ, ironically enough, all trace their origins back to the nineteenth century Christian reform and unity movement led by former Presbyterians Barton Warren Stone and the father and son team Thomas and Alexander Campbell. Known as the Stone-Campbell Movement, this tradition has a long and vaunted history, not just in the US, but around the world.

At last, a comprehensive, well-written, and readable encyclopedia of the Stone-Campbell Reformation is available. Long needed, this volume more than adequately meets its goal. The volume is edited by well-known, respected scholars of all three of the major branches of the Movement and written by scholars from within each of the segments, and contains a wealth of material on people, places and subjects relating to the Stone-Campbell Reformation.

Among the subjects, places and people treated are: Alexander and Thomas Campbell, Barton Stone, TB Larimore, FD Kershner, Moses Lard, Daniel Sommer, FD Srygley, Marshal Keeble, KC Moser; Silena Moore Holman; Foy Wallace, Jr.; RN Hogan; Caroline Neveille Pearre; a historical time-line for all three branches of the Movement; the historical attitudes towards restoration in the three branches of the Movement; historical attitudes toward women in the ministry among the three branches; women ministers such as Mary Stodgill and Jessie Colman Monser; attitudes on abortion and women's rights; attitudes on gay/lesbian rights in the Movement; Rice Haggard's influence on the Movement; the Scottish Haldanes and their influence on the thought of Campbell; the International Churches of Christ (Boston); the views on higher education among the three branches; colleges and universities of all three branches; founders of splinter movements and heresies such as Jesse Ferguson and John Thomas; the Movement's attitudes towards Shakers and Mormons; the Movemrent's attitude towards slavery and civil rights; Latino Disciples of Christ; missionary societies; Campbellian and Stoneite communion theology and eschatology; the Declaration and Address; the Stone-Campbell Movement in Great Britain, Russia, Australia and Canada; Hall L. Calhoun; David Oliphant; the Cane Ridge Revial's influence on Barton Stone; publishing houses of the three branches of the Movement; brotherhhod periodicals in the three branches; historical attitudes to missions and a history of missions; the movement's historical attitude towards creeds and confessions; devotional literature; Don DeWelt; etc.

In short, the volume contains articles on practically every facet of the churches comprising the Stone-Campbell Movement.

There are however, some seemingly glaring omissions; for example, from the Church of Christ branch alone one does not find articles on JN Armstrong; Yater Tant; the American Bible Union; or Thomas B. Warren and the Spiritual Sword. One choice made by the editors was to restrict articles only to deceased persons in order to avoid any kind of controversy. The reviewer is aware, however, that editorial choices must be made and are often difficult. Omissions are simply unavoidable.

Among other things, this volume adequately succeeds in pointing out just how diverse the traditions and churches comprising the Stone-Campbell Movement truly are.

All-in-all, the volume is a must-read for serious students of the Stone-Campbell Movement and mainstream American Protestantism in general. Eerdmans is to be commended for publishing such a work, and the editors and contributors commended for their herculean efforts at producing it. It should long serve its goal.

The Baker Encyclopedia of Christian Apologetics by Norman L. Geisler is the ultimate one-volume reference for Christians who seek meaningful responses to criticisms of their faith. Geisler, a professor of theology and apologetics at Southern Evangelical Seminary, is the encyclopedia's sole author. His previous books--Answering Islam and When Cultists Ask--help qualify Geisler to respond to a wide range of challenges to Christian belief. And this encyclopedia covers almost every conceivable philosophical challenge to Christianity, from "Agnosticism" to "Zen Buddhism." It also summarizes the key points regarding oft-challenged Christian doctrines and beliefs ("Adam, Historicity of," "Virgin Birth of Christ"). Each article is cleanly written and clearly organized. Indeed, Geisler's greatest talent is for logical thinking. Whether he is considering Jesus' view of the Bible or the tenets of Deism, he writes with confident assurance, so that no reader will feel lost.

4 out of 5 stars Good general apologetic work of the Christian faith.......2007-06-03

For a lay reader, Giesler's work is a good presentation of the traditional arguments of the Christian faith. As such, it is an "insiders" book -- not likely to persuade other faith traditions to convert, but to educate Christians about what they believe and why.

As such, his presentation of other faith traditions are a little like "straw dogs" and don't deal with them in their complexity. That may be okay for a lay understanding, but for those who are deeply committed to thier faith traditions, the analysis is more complex thatn Giesler treats them. Also, his Bible dating (in particular the New Testament texts) seems out of synch with what I understand to be mainstream Bible scholarship, for instance, dating the Gospel according to John before AD 50.

The above being said, it is my belief that we Christians don't often know whay we say what we say about other faith traditions, much less why we believe what we believe. Giesler's book provides an accessible and persuasive set of defenses of the Christian faith and would be a good addition for anyone who wants to do a better job of articulating their beliefs.

In my humble opinion, the best description of the Christian faith is still Calvin's Institutes of the Christian Religion. It's heavy lifting, to be sure, but focuses more on what we believe and why, rather then why "the other guy" is wrong.

      5 out of 5 stars Should Be a Part of Everyone's Library........2007-05-03

An excellent book. Detailed and well documented. A Must Read. Useful for people of all faiths who wish to learn more of the point of view of orthodox Christianity.

5 out of 5 stars Better than IVP's New Dictionary of Christian Apologetics.......2007-04-01

Two of the three reviews of IVP's New Dictionary of Christian Apologetics included comparisons with Norman Geisler's Baker Encyclopedia of Christian Apologetics, a volume of similar size and scope. An an owner of both, I would like to offer my own comparison of the two, focusing on the topics that come up most frequently in Christian apologetics, namely the existence of God, the problem of evil, biblical contradictions, miracles, the resurrection, science and the Bible, etc. Coverage by page count for the two volumes are as follows:

      _______________________________Baker Encyclopedia_____IVP's New Dictionary
      Evidence/Arguments for God____________32-1/2_________________11
      Problem of Evil________________________5-1/2__________________3-1/2
      The Resurrection______________________23-1/2_________________5
      Bible Criticism_________________________5-1/2__________________2
      Bible Difficulties/Errors__________________6-1/2__________________5-1/2
      Miracles_____________________________38_____________________5-1/2
      The Trinity____________________________7-1/2_________________3-1/2
      Views of Creation/Origins_______________15-1/2_________________4-1/2
      Science & the Bible_____________________9_____________________2
      Evolution______________________________9-1/2_________________2-1/2
      Big Bang Theory________________________4____________________1/2
      C. S. Lewis____________________________5_____________________1
      Salvation of Infants_____________________5-1/2__________________0

In addition, the articles in the Baker Encyclopedia tend to be more structured, with sub-headings, text tables, and numbered lists, which make them much easier to follow and to browse. The articles in IVP's New Dictionary are almost exclusively undifferentiated paragraphs of text.

Furthermore, in the area that I am most familiar with (science & the Bible), the articles in the Baker Encyclopedia are much more informative and balanced.

Therefore, between the two, I recommend Norman Geisler's Baker Encyclopedia of Christian Apologetics.

2 out of 5 stars OH! MY! GOD!.......2006-11-18

The arguments, reasoning and logic used in this book are so horribly bad that it scares me that the men who wrote live in the same world as me! The bottom line reasoning of this book is that God is real and perfect and that the Bible is his real and prefect word. The end all proof, the world exists, we exist, the bible exists, if God did not exist how could these things exist. And how do we know that the Bible is the real and perfect word of God, because God told the people who he had write it ,say so in it, so we would know it came from him................. Hey, I'm not kidding, here's an example, how can we know that evolution is false, in the bible Adam can speak, talk to God, and names all the animals, proving that he was not an "ignorant half-ape", proving that man did not evolve, proving that evolution is false. TA DA! How do we know that evolution is false, because the bible says so, how do we know whats in the bible is true, because God does not lie, how do we know that God does not lie, because the bible says so...... and round and round it goes.

For the Theist, this is just a very, very, long winded faith statement, if you already have faith then don't waste your time and money on this. Of course if you reading this then you must feel that you are lacking in something, like a rational explanation for your faith, if you find it here then it is amazing that you had the capacity to reason that you were missing it in the first place.

For the Atheist, this is a must have for a few reasons, 1) As an Atheist your making a choice (Vs faith), that choice should be based on all the best available information 2) If this is the best case the Theist can make then you are fully justified in your belief. 3) And as a bonus you get to remove from the table the hypocritical Theist claim that if you would only listen to what they had to say you would see the light.

Final word, if the arguments made in this book make since to you, well, then, I'm sorry to say, your stupid. How do you know your stupid, because this review says so, how do you know whats in this review is true, because the reviewer says it is, how do you know that what the reviewer says is true, because the reviewer wouldn't put it in the review if it wasn't. TA DA!

2 out of 5 stars Why go see a Toyota dealer to learn about Hondas.......2006-06-19

Mr. Geisler is far from an expert on many of these topics. I feel he just flipped through other peoples books and wrote down what he wanted to present to others.

Example is, his talks on say Zen. Anyone whose spent an hour online knows that the whole point of Zen or Eastern Religions, is to achieve an allocentric state of being, aka, enlightenment.

One of the problems is, in the West (USA) the ego is taught as being part of the brain that...blah blah blah

The ego isnt part of the brain, its your symbol of yourself, resulting from being selfcenterd. By meditating, aka, keeping your attention on something else, aka, whats infront of you (the moment), you can go beyond this egocentric state, the state that leads to suffering.

In this allocentric state, time feels to have stopped, life feels blissfull and one has gone beyond fear.

      The rulers dont want that...

      p.s.

...the fools will laugh, but the wise will understand

5 out of 5 stars Essential reference for Catholic Concepts.......2003-06-23

I would recommend this book to anybody who desires a reference book covering Catholic subjects. It is a superb companion to the Catholic Study Bible and/or the Catholic Catechism. The book clearly and thoroughly defines pertinent terms and concepts.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for the Christian Library.......2000-08-14

This encyclopedia is a wonderful source for reference material and provides itself as a valuable study aid aswell. For Catholics and non-Catholics alike the contents of this encyclopedia help to solve many questions about the faith. Everything in this encyclopedia is relevant to the Catechism and the Holy Scriptures. With this book you will be asking less questions and finding many answers.

5 out of 5 stars Third most must-have book for any Catholic.......1999-12-26

This is the third most must-have book (Behind the Bible and the Catechism of the Catholic Church)for any Catholic or person curious about Catholicism in general. It has the Imprimatur and the Nihl Obstat, the official "go-ahead" of the Catholic Church for books; in other words, nothing in this book misrepresents any of the official teachings or goes against matters of faith and morals. This book is a wonderful resource of knowledge that augments the Catechism in a way that is easy to understand. The Catechism lays down the blueprint of what Catholics believe, this book helps flesh it out. It explains in more detail things put forth by the Catechism. I use it all the time in my research and it has proven to be invaluable.

5 out of 5 stars ... a MUST for all Catholic homes and churches!.......1998-08-21

I work at a Catholic Church - and I am constantly referring to Robert and Virginia Broderick's book for answers to questions that often baffle me. Not once have I had to turn a visitor or caller away. This is one of the best Catholic encyclopiedias around - written with lay-people in mind. It is easy to understand, and, literally, warms the hearts of the readers. There are 150 pen-and-ink (liturgical) drawings by Virginia Broderick - one of the greatest Catholic artists alive today - illustrating many of the entries her late husband explains. The drawings alone are worth much more than you'll be paying for the encyclopedia. My suggestion is to buy more than one copy --- and pass the extra one around. It will surely edify and entertain anyone who loves the Catholic Church. Once I pick the book up,I find it VERY difficult to put it back down! I especially love studying Virginia's art. She's a contemporary genius! (Dan Paulos, artist)
