Book Description

Some say the line between good and evil is narrower than we imagine -- a divide as subtle as a mirror, and perhaps just as deep. To peer into its black, reflective glass is to know the dark potential we each possess, and we cross that obsidian boundary at our peril . . . into a world where we no longer recognize who we are or what we believed ourselves capable of.

In the late twenty-fourth century, decades after the fall of the once-mighty Terran Empire, the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance dominates the worlds that, in another reality, made up the United Federation of Planets. Humanity and its former subject races are now bound together by their shared oppression, slaves to their cruel and brutal conquerors. But a downtrodden few have found the courage and the strength of will to act. Inspired by visitors from another continuum to fight for their freedom, they have rekindled hope . . . and rediscovered an ancient truth: that every revolution begins with a vision.

Star Trek: VOYAGER ® A rebel ship commanded by a former slave named Chakotay attempts to evade pursuit in the Badlands . . . only to encounter a strange ship that was catapulted seventy thousand light-years across the galaxy. On board the craft are two aliens, one of whom has the potential to completely alter the balance of power within the Alliance. But as both sides of the struggle race to get to the stranger first, treachery throws all schemes into a tailspin.

Star Trek: NEW FRONTIER ® Following the Terran Empire's collapse, its longtime rival, the Romulan Star Empire, has absorbed many of the fringe civilizations spread across that part of the galaxy. One of the Romulans' slaves is M'k'nzy of Calhoun, a savage and unpredictable Xenexian who dreams of death . . . and who learns the value of freedom from the unlikeliest of teachers, a Romulan named Soleta.

Star Trek: DEEP SPACE NINE ® One fallen dictator's struggle to regain her power and her position leads to the discovery of a bold rebel plan for a decisive military strike against the Alliance. But while Kira Nerys navigates the dangerous road of politics, sex, and military intrigue that she believes will lead her back to reclaiming the Intendancy, cracks form in the rebel leadership, leading to a showdown that will change the course of the Mirror Universe.

3 out of 5 stars A trio of stories--two out of three are good. .......2007-08-31

This book contains three stories about the alternate universe first encountered in the original series and continued in Deep Space Nine. I enjoyed the first of these stories (dealing with characters from Star Trek: Voyager) and the third (dealing with characters from Deep Space Nine). The middle one was about the Romulans and I think all the characters in there were new, at least to me.

I was disappointed in that we didn't see a conclusion to the ending of empires towards which Spock was working in the first of the Mirro Universe books.

2 out of 5 stars When did Star Trek become so raunchy?.......2007-08-13

After waiting for over a year for a new Deep Space Nine story, I was excited to see this book on the shelf (especially since it looks like Pocketbooks is never going to release "Fearful Symmetry"). I realize that in the "mirror universe" stories (which they've done to death, by the way) the characters are all very different from the characters we as fans know. But I found nothing respectable in the characters in this book, which has always been what drew me to Star Trek... I care about the characters. I read the stories because I want to know how things turn out for the characters. But I kept reading these stories waiting for them to get better... they didn't. These stories are weak, and that's being charitable.

And the language - I thought Star Trek was about ADVANCED people in Starfleet: healthier, better educated, less crime, etc. If these characters are so well-educated, then why can't they express themselves without such trashy language? I'm not talking about the typical four letter words that are used to express frustration or anger that one could reasonably expect, I'm talking about gutter language. And graphic depictions of extreme violence, torture, and sex that left me feeling like I'd just watched a couple of hours of FX on TV. I've never seen that in the Star Trek franchise before. I hope the editors at Simon and Schuster don't think they were updating Star Trek to make it more hip and modern, because this was just awful. And the worst part is that two of the three authors have written some very good Star Trek stories in the past. I don't know what happened, but this book was definitely a MISS! (That's a few hours of my life I wish I had back.)

4 out of 5 stars Terran Rebellion.......2007-07-15

Barely compatible with the "Dark Passions" duo, Obsidian Alliances was nevertheless as well formulated as its Part 1, Glass Empires.

It would seem that the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance and the Terran Rebellion are doomed to years of fighting, until one exterminates the other (or unless our heroic universe steps in). Mirror characters of DS9 and VOY are almost all as sharp as the ones we're used to except focussed on way different and desperate goals.

Never really connected with NF, but it did add to the completeness of the work.

Here's hoping that the violent Alliance also falls (their cooperation is tenuous at best anyway).

Not too keen on the larger font print. 3.5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC.......2007-05-16

This was better than the first in the Mirror Series.
Partially because I love the DS9 and New Frontiers Characters but doubly so as I do not care for the Voyager crew and loved that story as well!

5 out of 5 stars Mirror Universe / Obsidian Alliances.......2007-05-14

Nice job on the alternate universe books. A fast-paced read and very well done.

Book Description

The CMOS technology area has quickly grown, calling for a new text--and here it is, covering the analysis and design of CMOS integrated circuits that practicing engineers need to master to succeed. Filled with many examples and chapter-ending problems, the book not only describes the thought process behind each circuit topology, but also considers the rationale behind each modification. The analysis and design techniques focus on CMOS circuits but also apply to other IC technologies.

5 out of 5 stars Every designer in my company has this book.......2007-09-17

This is by far the best book for analog designer. The only thing I wish to see is to include some simulation examples such as: AC analysis, noise analysis...

Also, as the technology moves to sub-micron, long channel approximation is no longer accurate. I wonder if author can comment on how to size the transistors for fewer spice iterations.

Maybe we will see them in the 2nd edition.

5 out of 5 stars Grown appreciation.......2007-06-02

The more my knowledge grew, the more I have appreciated returning to this book as a reference compared to any of the others. Razavi's explanations are lucid and directly to the point allowing me to quickly recall/re-understand concepts that I either once grasped and forgot or never really understood in the first place.

3 out of 5 stars It is OK. There could be better ones.......2006-11-12

I have used this book in a graduate class. It is good and very rigorous. It has good amount of examples and plenty of end of chapter problems. It is a good treatment of the subject. However, it might be hard as introductory.

2 out of 5 stars Disappoiting.......2006-03-07

The book is too theory-oriented; not suitable for engineers. I felt disappointed.

And the chapters on PLL and switched-cap. are too common-sense! No use at all for practising engineers...I don't want to recommend this book -

5 out of 5 stars Great book........2006-01-29

Difficult Side
Read Sedra/Smith book before trying this one. It is really hard to follow. It's hard to differentiate between small and large signal analysis, since author uses the same notation for both. Watch out!

Good Side:
Book is on CMOS analog ICs, so it's specific.
Book is very thorough. Behzad Razavi explains the function of each resistor in a circuit. Book teaches on a high level. Author put in much effort.

2 out of 5 stars surprisingly terrible!.......2007-06-20

Well, this is just to say that I was surprised by how boring (and seemingly uninformative) this book is! The title really grabbed my attention and I love anthropology (especially cultural anthropology). However, for whatever reason, it just didn't do anything for me. In fact, it did LESS than anything for me! (there's another fifty dollars forever gone)...

1 out of 5 stars gooses review.......2005-07-12

this book was boring. Evrything in here was either stuff you could look up in the dictonary and that you wouldn't need to because the terms went by other words as well, or common sense that you would know by guessing. This book reads similar to books made in the era of black and white television whos goals were to dispense facts and not to entertain thus saving space and money. Because of this it sounds just like an instruction manual except for the fact that most instruction manuals arent this long. If you plan on reading this book all the way through good luck its a 282 page instruction manual. If I could have I would have given it a negative one star review

5 out of 5 stars Like Reading for Fun!.......2003-06-22

Learning cultural anthropology through this book is a joy ride. When I was reading, it actually felt like I was reading a New York Times Bestseller! This book captures you attention and it is never boring. I had to read this book for my intro to anthropology class and you can only imagine how fun studying for this class was. I've learned so much from it and I would read it again when I have the time!

4 out of 5 stars Not intimidating to new cultural anthropology students.......2000-03-30

There is little wasted space in this book. It is to the point. This brevity for me was ideal, but for some readers, perhaps they need more examples. For use in a classroom setting, this is an especially useful work if used in conjunction with a readings from cultural anthropology text such as "Conformity and Conflict." The two complement each other very well. More specifically, I found the latter part of MFH especially interesting-- the chapters dealing with gender, the world system, and stratification. MFH should not only appeal to those within the field of cultural anthropology but also should draw the attention of students working within the sister disciplines of history and sociology.

Book Description

There are moments glimpsed only in shadow, where darkness rules and evil incarnate thrives. You hope against hope that in your lifetime, evil is relegated to the shadows. But what if it wasn't?

What if you lived in a universe where your life was measured only by what you could do for the Empire? What would you do to survive? Would you sell your soul to free yourself? If you were offered the chance to rule, would you seize it? If you could free your universe from the darkness but only at the cost of your life, would you pay that price?

Star Trek: Enterprise® She seized power in a heartbeat, daring to place herself against all the overlords of the Empire. Empress Hoshi Sato knows the future that could be; now all she has to do is make sure it never happens. For her to rule, she must hold sway not only over the starship from the future but also over her warlords, the resistance, and her Andorian husband. As quickly and brutally as Hoshi seized power, imperial rule is taken from her. Her only chance to rule again is to ally herself with a lifelong foe, and an alien.

Star Trek® One man can change the future, but does he dare? Spock, intrigued by the vision of another universe's Federation, does what no Vulcan, no emperor, has ever done: seize power in one blinding stroke of mass murder. And at the same instant he gains imperial power, Spock sows the seeds for the Empire's downfall. Is this a form of Vulcan madness, or is it the coolly logical plan of a man who knows the price his universe must pay for its freedom?

Star Trek: The Next Generation® Humanity is a pitiful collection of enslaved, indentured, and abused peoples. No one dares to question the order, except at peril of their lives. One man survives by blinding himself to the misery around him. However, Jean-Luc Picard resists, just once. And in that one instant he unlocks a horror beyond the tyranny of the Alliance. Can a man so beaten down by a lifetime of oppression stop the destruction?

5 out of 5 stars The Mirror Universe is one of the best Star Trek concepts..........2007-09-16

If you like Star Trek buy this book. But first watch the Mirror Universe episodes so you're not lost. :)

3 out of 5 stars Mirror Universe Part 1: Glass Empires (Star Trek Mirror Universe).......2007-09-14

First story line was good, the second one with Spock was excellent. I really enjoyed reading that one. I really enjoyed reading these books.

The only thing I wish for is that the authors of Star Trek keep track of each other's works so they don't contradict each other. I have noticed, between this one and Book II, especially Book II, there are contradictions between these books and "Star Trek Dark Passions Books one and two".

For example, how the Terran empire fell, who was in charge. In these books Spock was the Emporer. In Dark Passions, Spock was merely a Captain, yet both deal with the Mirror Images. Kira Nerys position is different in both, and their situations are far different. Though their personalities are similar.

I would recommend to read one or the other but not both. Though I enjoyed these two books, I preferred Dark Passions series.

4 out of 5 stars Fall of the Terran Empire.......2007-07-15

There are Trek timeline inconsistencies, for example, the length of time that Terrans et al became subject to the lethal Alliance wouldn't be as long as "generations" as quoted in the book. The episodes seem to suggest less than a hundred years, probably even less than half a century (given that the average human lifespan is about 75 years).

Also, it would seem that the author did not take into consideration "Dark Mirror" (Diane Duane), in which a lethal version of Picard captained a dreadnought Enterprise-D. However, I was able to mentally set aside the Duane work to realise that the canon episodes never included their own Mirror Universe TNG.

The book itself was clearly well thought out, a feasible route to destruction of the tyrannical Terran Empire...unfortunately to be surmounted by the even more tyrannical Klingon-Cardassian Alliance.

Enjoyable read, even if it does place our favourite characters in an unpleasant "what-if" situation.

Not too keen on the larger font print. 3.5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars 2 out of 3 are great stories.......2007-05-26

I say that two out of three stories are great because the Enterprise era story and the TOS era story were both spectacular. The TNG era story wasn't that great but the author of that one isn't one of my favorites either so I may be biased.

5 out of 5 stars More adventures in the Mirror Universe!.......2007-05-10

Three stories that flow together to form a great picture of the Mirror Universe. Exciting, logical (sorry, couldn't resist) and a joy to read! Highly recommended.

Book Description

In this compelling book, Elan Golomb identifies the crux of the emotional and psychological problems of millions of adults. Simply put, the children of narcissist -- offspring of parents whose interest always towered above the most basic needs of their sons and daughters -- share a common belief: They believe they do not have the right to exist.

The difficulties experienced by adult children of narcissists can manifest themselves in many ways: for examples, physical self-loathing that takes form of overeating, anorexia, or bulimia; a self-destructive streak that causes poor job performance and rocky personal relationships; or a struggle with the self that is perpetuated in the adult's interaction with his or her own children. These dilemmas are both common and correctable, Dr. Golomb tells us.

With an empathic blend of scholarship and case studies, along with her own personal narrative of her fight for self, Dr. Golomb plumbs the depths of this problem, revealing its mysterious hold on the affairs of otherwise bright, aware, motivated, and worthy people. Trapped in the Mirror explores.

Rooted in a profoundly humanist traditional approach, and suffused with the benefit of the latest knowledge about intrafamily relationships, Trapped in the Mirror offers more than the average self-help book; it is truly the first self-heal book for millions.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Pass........2007-08-14

The idea that this author is in any way justified in writing a book on healing or conquering narcissism is laughable. The book is filled with countless examples of her own insanity--like the time she cracked her skull and insisted on seeing an Eastern meditative healer instead of a doctor. Of course, her parents invention was proof of their narcissism.

This is a fascinating topic but an awful book. Most of the anecdotes come from group therapy that she ATTENDED instead of led. The book bills itself as an authoritative work on a topic that the author just happens to have a bit of personal experience in. Really, it's a rant, a cathartic work aimed at healing HER wounds and not THE wounds. I think there is a massive conflict on interest in writing about a problem that personally affected everyday of her childhood. Each time she describes narcissistic qualities you can tell she is projected the qualities of her parents. Pass.

5 out of 5 stars A valuable source of information.......2007-06-11

This book has helped me see that the roots of my own narcissism stem from my interactions with my parents at a very early age. When the parents needs are greater then their children's needs then the parent is essentially negating the reality of the child as a living, sovereign, sentient, being with their own life and their own soul. The roots of narcissism begin with this parental rejection. I have seen this to be true with my own narcissism .

The book is written in a very elegant way. It is written with great humanity and I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent background book, but less "do it yourself healing".......2007-06-08

Author has written this book based on personal experience. The personal story mingles with appropiate case stories and a professional framework.

Bias is on the personal story and the cases. Less on the more professional theoretical issues.

This book will provide insight in the mechanisms of narcissism, and having narcissist parents.

I have rated it 4 stars for the role model cases it provides. To me they were the most helpfull, 2. the personal story made the author stand out as someone who knows.
The missing 5th. star is due to the weak: Then what should I do now ? part.

Buy this book to get some background and the feeling you are not alone.
(60% of all people seeking personal Therapy has been hurt by narcissists, one way or another.)
Look elsewhere for "do it yourself" healing programs.

To me, this book put up a question:
What is the difference between a child with subclinic asperger syndrome and a child with a narcissist parent ?
I found my answer, but if this sounds relevant, read the book.
If you have a subclinic Aspergers kid, read it anyway.

We are not all subclinic Aspergers...and Prognosis for an adult or kids with a narcissistic parent are better.

I recommend this book strongly.

And remember to hugg your kids unconditionally, even though you do not read this book. Hard to do?...training is the thing.

1 out of 5 stars What a letdown..........2007-05-30

The introduction of the book leads one to think that this will be a good clinical book on the topic of Narcissistic Personality Disorder and its effect on the children of narcissists. That is, until you get to Chapter 3 and realize that the book is about the author's own "unfair" life and the lives of her friends. The objectivity of the author is zilch because she is personally invested in her own story and its presentation. She also seems to judge her friends ("so sad that they can't stop the narcissistic pattern"). This is literally the first book that I have ever thrown away! I agree with other readers who felt that the author's own narcissism is showcased in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Thought provoking.......2007-05-01

I enjoyed Trapped in the Mirror as i found it especially useful in analyzing my past and recognizing narcissism in those around me. I also found i was able to identify narcissistic traits that i had picked up, and am able to observe and work on eliminating them.

The examples are specific and quite terrifying to contemplate, however i found it a worthy growth experience.

Recommended reading for anyone, and everyone.

Book Description

Hampton Regis is a small harbor town on the southern coast of England, a place with an ancient history but long since passed over by its larger neighbors. There, in the year after World War I has ended, a tragedy is in the making – a woman's husband has been attacked and badly injured and the suspect, the man she loved before he left to go to war, has taken the wife and her maid as hostages. The desperate man, Stephen, threatens to kill the hostages unless the local police bring in a man he knew in the trenches – Scotland Yard Inspector Ian Rutledge.

Rutledge, still struggling with his own demons from the war, fears that in stepping into the emotional struggle of these three people, he can't be objective. Their situation in a sense mirrors his own. As a result of Rutledge going off to fight, he too lost the woman he loved to another man.

If, as Stephen claims, he didn't try to kill his lover's husband, then who did? And what has happened in this little town that is worth killing for? Once again, Charles Todd has placed the tormented, yet brilliant policeman into a situation that, while it brings back his haunted past, must be solved before a killer strikes again.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Solid but uninspiring.......2007-10-01

As has become usual for the Ian Rutledge series, this is a well-written mystery that evokes the time period well and tells a good story. That said, this entry is not one of Todd's best. It's complex and ultimately not very satisfying as a story, and takes far too long to unwind and develop. If you've read the rest of the series, it's worth reading. But I wouldn't recommend it on its own unless you have a specific interest in 1920s Britain or police procedural mysteries.

I have enjoyed this series and read each of the previous installments. Trying to wade my way through this one was like slogging through mud. The narrative drive so satisfying in the previous books bogged down here in an unlikely plot, silly characters, and constant repetition. I wanted to shout at the characters to DO SOMETHING! I'd say the book is overlong by 50 - 100 pages, and it certainly dampened my anticipation for the next Rutledge, due out in January. "Charles Todd" -- mere et fils -- seem to have lost the plot, as they say in England. Or at least the energy of the previous books. Maybe it's just me, but I don't care as much about Rutledge and Hamish after reading this book as I once did.

1 out of 5 stars Not even mediocre!!!.......2007-09-16

I can't believe all the five star reviews for this book! As an Ian Rutledge fan, I found it sadly disappointing. Nothing in the book is believable. The so-called hostage situation is absurd, especially after a murder takes place in the hostage house. The motive given by the killer when he recites a full confession that is of course overheard is ridiculous. Rutledge advises the doctor to place a guard and lock doors to protect an unconscious victim, and when the doctor declines, simply shrugs his shoulders and does nothing about it. The red herring is glaringly obvious, and I don't often spot them. Even Hamish is getting predictable and boring. The previous books were so good, this is a shame.

5 out of 5 stars Another Winner in This Series.......2007-08-02

This is the ninth in this wonderfully complex and well-written series. In this outing, Stephen Mallory, accused of severely beating a local man, is holding the man's wife hostage. He specifically asks for Ian Rutledge of Scotland Yard. Rutledge and Mallory served together in the trenches of WWI. When the severely injured man disappears, and there are two murders, Rutledge must peel back layer after layer to discover who would want to kill the former diplomat and why.

If you want an intelligently written procedural try this series, but start with the first book to understand the complicated and damaged Ian Rutledge. This series has some of the best writing done in the mystery genre. The author is often compared to P.D. James.

5 out of 5 stars great reads.......2007-07-04

As always Charles Todd writes a great mystery. He keeps you interested from page one to the last page. I can't wait to read the next book. His characters are always interesting. Very well written!!

Book Description

The year is 1502, and seven-year-old Bianca de Nevada lives perched high above the rolling hills and valleys of Tuscany and Umbria at Montefiore, the farm of her beloved father, Don Vicente. But one day a noble entourage makes its way up the winding slopes to the farm -- and the world comes to Montefiore.

In the presence of Cesare Borgia and his sister, the lovely and vain Lucrezia -- decadent children of a wicked pope -- no one can claim innocence for very long. When Borgia sends Don Vicente on a years-long quest, he leaves Bianca under the care -- so to speak -- of Lucrezia.

She plots a dire fate for the young girl in the woods below the farm, but in the dark forest salvation can be found as well ...

A lyrical work of stunning creative vision, Mirror Mirror gives fresh life to the classic story of Snow White -- and has a truth and beauty all its own.

"E-Book Extra: "Little Snow-White" by the Brothers Grimm (read the original version of the classic fairy tale)Think you know who's the fairest of them all? Think again. Bestselling re-imaginer of classic fairy tales sets the Snow White story in Renaissance Italy, where the madly vain Lucrezia Borgia plots a dire fate for seven-year-old Bianca de Nevada (a.k.a. Snow White).A lyrical work of stunning creative vision, Mirror Mirror is set in Renaissance Italy, where Gregory Maguire draws a connection between the poison apple in the original Snow White story and the Borgia family's well-known appetite for poisoning its foes. In Mirror Mirror Snow White is called Bianca de Nevada. She is born on a farm in Tuscany in 1495, and when she is seven, her father is ordered by the duplicitous Cesare Borgia to go on a quest to reclaim the relic of the original Tree of Knowledge, a branch bearing three living apples that are thousands of years old. Bianca is left in the care of her father's farm staff and the beautiful -- and madly vain -- Lucrecia Borgia, Cesare's sister. But Lucrecia becomes jealous of her lecherous brother's interest in the growing child and plots a dire fate for Bianca in the woods below the farm. There Bianca finds herself in the home of seven dwarves -- the creators of the magic mirror -- who await the return of their brother, the eighth dwarf, long gone on a quest of his own. In the evocative style of Maguire's earlier novels, Mirror Mirror is a fresh, compelling take on a beloved classic tale.

3 out of 5 stars Not my favorite Maguire book.......2007-10-08

I have read Wicked, Son of a Witch, Lost, and Mirror Mirror. I loved the other three (my favorite was Lost). I found that Mirror Mirror was very slow through the middle of the book. It picks up a little at the end, but I guess I've been spoiled by Maguire and expected miraculous books all the time. This one doesn't match the other three, but does have some interesting parts to it. However, I don't understand why the dwarves were stone-like creatures. Am I missing the symbolism (symbolism is not my forte)? Overall, I could have skipped this book. If this is your first Maguire book, please try another one. The rest are fantastic!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing and Dark.......2007-08-05

Having read Wicked, Son of a Witch, and Confessions, I was ecstatic to find the time to sit down with Mirror Mirror. I wish I had done anything else! While Maguire's cleverness is apparent, I found myself speedreading ahead to see when another inane description of something small and pointless would end, and skipping ahead at the frequent pepperings of bodily secretions and functions. While the ideas and approach to the Snow White fairy tale are brilliant, they are delivered with a cold darkness that paints the world in a light that I read to escape. The theme of the sexual situations left me feeling defiled and dirty, as if I had stumbled onto something hideously grotesque. And, as a woman, I was greatly insulted at the description of Bianca's first menses. Of all the research done for this book, Maguire couldn't ask one woman what menstruation is like? It reminds me of the ignorant descriptions of school boys who know nothing of the female mysteries and talk about it as though they are professors- much to the disgust of those surrounding their ignorance. Maguire has lost a great deal of my respect with this one. Inappropriate for children under 16.

3 out of 5 stars Good idea, not delivered well.......2007-07-22

I feel that Maguire, in all of his novels, makes the reader think about different perspectives on classic stories in a way that is refreshing and intelligent. Unfortunately, "Mirror Mirror" was not as great as all of his other novels to me. It was choppy and I was often times lost. Time moved too quickly was was only explained by many-year-long sleeps. I found this irritating and unimaginative. I also feel as if Maguire has the idea in his mind, but cannot tell it effectively.

Overall, good story if you can look past the confusing word choices and broken story-telling.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for Maguire lovers.......2007-07-20

Fun two-night read. Takes you on a quick surreal journey. Great book for Maguire fans.

3 out of 5 stars Not Maguire's Best.......2007-06-15

Maguire has made himself quite successful spinning off fairy tales, but this variation on Snow White seemed lacking. His take on Cinderella in "Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister" was steeped in history, and "Wicked" was immersed in the fantastical world of Oz, while "Mirror Mirror" couldn't decide if it wanted to be history or fantasy.

"Mirror Mirror" changes perspective often. The lustful and incestual Borgias, the innocent and fair Bianca, her father on his quest for a limb from the Tree of Knowledge, and the mystical "dwarves" all take turns narrating. I often found it choppy and inconsistent. While I enjoyed it, I've enjoyed Maguires other books much more than this one.

Book Description

Anthropology has a long history of the "other," yet we can look right here at home for the strangeness we seek. We often neglect to ask the questions that reveal our own culture's underlying value and beliefs. In this volume, we bring the American culture into focus. For readers to understand the full impact of ethnography, to experience cultural relativity and to gain a foundation to build informed comparisons, readers need a firm grasp of their own culture--and need to use this volume. The Third Edition consists of 19 essays written by anthropologists and other scholars using an ethnographic perspective. The essays enable readers to understand themselves better by focusing on their own culture and seeing it from a new perspective. This collection gives anthropology a comparative perspective that provides a reflective lens, a mirror, for understanding ourselves and the world in which we live.

Book Description

This thorough and detailed exposition is the result of an intensive month-long course sponsored by the Clay Mathematics Institute. It develops mirror symmetry from both mathematical and physical perspectives. The material will be particularly useful for those wishing to advance their understanding by exploring mirror symmetry at the interface of mathematics and physics.

This one-of-a-kind volume offers the first comprehensive exposition on this increasingly active area of study. It is carefully written by leading experts who explain the main concepts without assuming too much prerequisite knowledge. The book is an excellent resource for graduate students and research mathematicians interested in mathematical and theoretical physics.

5 out of 5 stars Detailed overview of the subject.......2005-05-16

Mirror symmetry has become an established branch of mathematics and mathematical physics, and research in the subject has resulted in brilliant developments. This sizable book contains essentially some (polished) lecture notes of a seminar series in mirror symmetry that was given in the spring of 2000. This reviewer only studied Part 5 of the book, entitled "Advanced Topics" and so only that part will be reviewed here. In addition, space constraints then dictate only a small portion of this part can be reviewed. Needless to say, any reader who intends to tackle this book will need a substantial background in modern mathematics and advanced physics, and a sizable commitment in time. The time spent is well worth it though, as both the mathematics and physics behind mirror symmetry has to rank as one of the most fascinating research topics in the last two decades.

In the chapter entitled "Topological Strings" the authors consider the functional integration of worldsheet geometries. This project involves essentially the integration over the complex structures of Riemann surfaces. Referring to this procedure as "quantum gravity", they do not address it in-depth, but instead focus on the coupling of topological sigma models to worldsheet gravity, which is called `topological string theory' in the literature. The authors first consider the case where the target is a Kahler manifold whose first Chern class is zero, since for this case the quantum cohomology ring is less easy to obtain, i.e. it can obtain contributions from holomorphic maps of any degree. Even for the case where there is no coupling to gravity, the degree 0 contribution is related to the classical intersection number. The contributions from higher degree result in the deformation of the classical cohomology ring into the quantum cohomology ring. The authors then ask whether there are any other correlators that will give nontrivial (non-zero) invariants in genus 0. Posing this question leads to the WDVV equation and the genus 0 topological string partition function. The n-point correlation functions of topological strings can then be defined as the nth partial derivatives of this function. For higher genus cases, the correlators are all zero, but the authors show the connection between the higher genus partition function and holomorphic anomalies. The case of three-dimensional Calabi-Yau manifolds is special, if one concentrates on the integration over the complex structures of the worldsheet. When the complex dimension of this moduli space is 3(g-1) then there are isolated points where holomorphic maps exist. Defining a topological string theory for Calabi-Yau threefolds is straightforward, as the author shows, and proceeds analogously to the case of topological field theory. A measure is defined on the moduli space of Riemann surfaces of genus g that cancels the axial charge anomaly. A genus g (>1) topological string amplitude, which is a section of a bundle over the moduli space of Calabi-Yau manifolds, is then obtained from this procedure. Modulo the presence of holomorphic anomalies, the authors show that the definition of topological string amplitudes is consistent with the topological symmetry. The origin of these holomorphic anomalies is discussed in fair detail by the authors, having their origin in the boundaries of the moduli space.

The rigorous mathematical formulation of mirror symmetry is of course of great interest to mathematicians. Because of its origin in string theory and quantum field theory, mirror symmetry has not yet received this kind of rigor. Chapters 37 and 38 of this book discuss some of the approaches that attempt to put mirror symmetry on a more rigorous foundation. One of these involves the use of `derived categories,' an approach that was recommended by the mathematician Maxim Kontsevich. The discussion in these chapters takes place in the context of D-branes, and Kontsevich conjectures that mirror symmetry is the equivalence of two categories: the derived category of coherent sheaves, and the category of Lagrangian submanifolds with flat U(1) connections. Specifically the equivalence entails the equivalence between the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves or `B-cycles' and the category of A-cycles with compositions defined in terms of holomorphic maps from disks. This latter category is derived from the Fukaya A-infinity category, as is shown by the authors. They discuss in detail this category, being essentially a generalization of a differential, graded algebra, especially how to obtain the compositions. In chapter 37, the authors give an explicit example of the equivalence of these categories for the case of the elliptic curve. The elliptic curve is interesting in this regard in that it is its own mirror, i.e. the complex parameter is mapped to the complexified Kahler parameter by the mirror map.

The derived category has sometimes been a stumbling block to those who want to understand the Kontsevich conjecture. The authors do not attempt to give the reader the needed insight into this kind of category, but merely take it to be a collection of all holomorphic bundles and coherent sheaves. Sheaves in this category can be subtracted from each other using a map between them. Physically, this subtraction corresponds to the annihilation of branes and anti-branes via a tachyon. Derived categories though are straightforward to think about if one views them from the standpoint of algebraic topology. Derived categories are rich enough to include notions of localization and triangulated objects (i.e. "complexes") and maps (i.e. morphisms) between these objects. This is a kind of "homology" but what is of main interest are homotopies between the morphisms. The class of homotopic morphisms between two complexes forms an abelian group and one can then obtain a category consisting of complexes as objects and classes of homotopic morphisms as morphisms. A cohomology functor can then be defined on this category, along with graded objects and differentials between them. The homotopic category can be given a "triangulation" and morphisms in this category that give rise to isomorphisms in cohomology are given special status, called `quasimorphisms.' The localization of this category with respect to quasimorphisms is called a derived category.

Book Description

Among the significant projects of the last year of his life, Richard Avedon (1923-2004) completed a book of his photographs of women. Always transcending categorization-he was both a fashion photographer and known as a "poet of portraiture"-Avedon was interested in seeing how elemental facts of modern life and human existence were reflected in his work. And what could be more elemental than women, who have mesmerized artists across the centuries?

Looking at his work in this way, Avedon was able to create an unparalleled view of women in his time, a tumultuous half century of rapidly changing social facts, cultural ideals, popular styles, and high fashion. As an artist, Avedon was deeply responsive to nuances of expression, gesture, and comportment, and his photographs unfailingly opened a window to the interior lives of his subjects. These ranged from celebrities (Marilyn Monroe), artists (Marguerite Duras, June Leaf), and high-fashion models (Suzy Parker, Dovima) to anonymous people that simply drew his attention. Like the best of art and literature, they evoke rich lives and complex experiences.

An incisive essay by art historian Anne Hollander offers an overview of a half century of Avedon's images of women.

4 out of 5 stars Breathtaking.......2007-07-31

The quality of this publication is very impressive indeed and the fashion photography is excellent.

However, as one reviewer said, some images are cut instead of being represented on a full page. At the same time, despite this flaw, this is a collection worth having in your library.

Also, if this pleases you, I would take a look at Steve McCurry's "Portraits." You know an image is powerful when you start pouring tears because it represents humanaity in the most profound way. I have provided the link below.

5 out of 5 stars Richard Avedon Woman In The Mirror.......2006-02-24

This latest by our recently departed R.A. ( I cried like a little girl when he died) is one of his best. With images in his beloved black and white but also rare color that I've never seen before the book is a classic portryal of Avedon's images of women. Dovima with elephants, Suzy Parker, Rose Kennedy, the most erotic image of Stephanie Seymour ever. The color images of Nadja with a skeleton in fashion images that will stay with you for ages, this book is a fantastic portfolio of Americas greatest photographer,( ok Irving Penn & Avedon share that title). If you were not in on Made In France,(which is now a $1500.00 book )get this one it has more substance aside from the beautiful design of MIF. I miss Avedon and this book brought some memory of his brilliant approach to photography once again.

5 out of 5 stars Avedon's Last Gasp.......2006-02-12

Avedon's last book. He died in October 2004. This is a beautiful collection, all are full-page and a few double-page spreads. Many are fashion pieces, but a number are of the famous, including a wonderful Janis Joplin!

The essay by Ms. Hollander starts a bit slow, but once up to speed
provides some interesting insights. A fyne, hefty tome worth the bucks.

5 out of 5 stars Female in the lens.......2005-11-17

Richard Avedon selected a portfolio of women he has photographed over the last 60 years for "Woman in the Mirror.". Here are 125 images ranging from 1946 (Zazi, a street performer in Rome) to 2004, the year Avedon died. Some of the images have been published but many have not. The majority of photos are from Avedon's career as a fashion photographer - familiar faces like Dorian Leigh, Dovina, Jean Shrimpton, Penelope Tree and Suzy Parker (who is featured on the cover). Women from other walks of life are featured as well - actresses (Katharine Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot, Tilda Swinton, Marilyn Monroe), writers (Isak Dinesen, Marguerite Duras, Renata Adler), singers (Tina, Turner, Patti Smith, Janis Joplin, Maria Callas) and many more. And there's also Elton John in drag! Fifteen pages are reproductions from a "photographic fable" titled "In Memory of the Late Mr. and Mrs. Comfort" (1995) which features models in bizarre poses with skeletons. An essay by Anne Hollander covers the career of this fascinating photographer.

4 out of 5 stars Good photographs, poor design.......2005-10-23

This is a book of excellent photographs from one of the great masters. The design of the book is so bad that almost all of the square or horizontal pictures are"cut". What a shame that the designer didn't understand what a book of photographs is.
