A Landmark Design Book.......2005-11-10
This must be the first full book-length study of the increasingly popular subject of outdoor kitchens and cooking. The author's style is precise and easy, allowing the reader to understand the history of cooking outdoors, which, after all, is how cooking got started. The book is beautifully produced, with a profusion of color illustrations and drawings which illustrate the text's in-depth approach to all aspects of the subject. From simple outdoor grilling to the design and construction of a custom, high-end outdoor kitchen and dining area, the reader can develop a better feel for the glorious benefits of cooking by fire. A useful index of resources for products is included at the end.
Not to be ignored are the many sidebars in the book, many of which provide essential information, such as those relating to choosing grills, the estimation of food servings for groups, cleaning a grill and food safety when outdoors. Major chefs and designers who specialize in outdoor cooking and grilling are interviewed, including 'Barbeque Bible' maestro Steven Raichlen, Dwayne Ridgaway, Food Network star Paula Deen, Richard Sandoval (author of Modern Mexican Flavors) and Dinosaur Bar-B-Que owner John Stage.
We can't all afford to spend a fortune on a full-blown outdoor kitchen, but Amanda Lecky's book is a great resource for outdoor large and small, and is worth more than its weight in (gold or otherwise) briquettes. Outdoor cooking has never been so fully analyzed and featured and this book makes you want to run out on the patio, fight the fall chill and grill a great meal.

At Your Service, A Hands-on Guide to the Proffessonal Dining Rom.......2007-10-04
I only bought this book for my Restaurant Management class homework. I was suprised to find out that there was no question and answers at the end of each chapters, like most of my text books for class. Overall the book was very informative. I especially liked that it did have a lot of photos. Some of my books are all text reading, borrrring. At Your Service: A Hands-On Guide to the Professional Dining Room
Best book there is on the subject........2007-02-24
This book is the best book on the subject from the authority. A must have.
A nice browser.......2007-01-13
Listen it is actually a good manual to pick up before you open a restaurant for the third or fourth time.
Excellent.......2006-02-03
I was trained by the author John Fischer at the CIA. He is an excellent teacher of the FoH Art. It is truely an art to wait on people and give the guest every thing they could possibly want or need. John is a great and excellent teacher that dove into the realms of the ways and hows and whats to do and when to do it sequences. I got to see him in action behind a bar one afternoon serving up as the bartender that did not show that day. He was knowledgable about wines and bar drinks showing some razzle dazzle! He was "the man" when I had him. Thanks John and for even signing my book...guy
Move over remarkable service........2005-10-12
I attended the Culinary Institute of America and was trained by Mr. Fischer. I cannot imagine a single resource that does so much to demistify the key essentials of successful service than this reference. I recommend it to anyone in the industry or interested in the industry. The old standard (the bible until now) for front of the house reference has been remarkable service. An information filled text-book but a remarkably boring and mundane read. Entertaining, Original, Insightful, and Educational this is your one stop reading for front of the house.

Great book for young experimenters.......1999-10-07
The book is great for young experimenters. Easy to follow instructions and clever writing get kids into the 'science is fun' mindset. The 'Food for thought' section that accompanies each activity explains the science behind the activity clearly and with the right amount of detail for the intended audience. (Tested on my 10-year-old son). Each activity concludes with a 'More to chew on' section that enables kids to relate what they've observed to other examples of the same principle. Many of the activities focusing on static electricity, air pressure and buoyancy could be used for elementary school science fair projects. There is an awesome demonstration of center of gravity. Other activities deal with sense of touch, taste and smell. There are a couple of activities exploring optics. The scientific method and related concepts are introduced. The illustrations are extremely helpful in diagramming the text. Older kids (and adults) will enjoy the reading for the subtle titles like 'Stop Making Cents' and 'A Salt and Gravity'.

Shabby Chic Gorgeous .......2007-06-15
As usual Rachels books never fail to delight the eye with the sumptuous photography, attention to detail and her style of putting together the simplest objects to create visual feasts. A book to devour over and over with a lovely cup of tea !
Shift in Focus to Parties, Away from Home Decorating.......2006-02-15
Maybe "Elegant Shabby Chic" would have been a better name for the book. The photos are gorgeous. The events the author created are lavish affairs for Hollywood socialites. The reader can find inspiration from these and depending on the budget, create your own event.
Each chapter covers a separate affair or decorating challenge. There's Jennifer Lopez' restaurant and Pamela Anderson's son's birthday party. Paper parasols, vintage/flowery hats, a mixture of china teacups, and lots of old-fashioned flowers.
I picked this up, originally thinking it was a decorating book. As a party planning book, it's can be an inspiration.
Beautiful picture book........2005-08-28
I was in great anticipation of this book because I found her previous ones (with the exception of the Gift Giving one which I have not read) to be beautiful, inspiring and filled with great, new to me, information. I wasn't expecting another book like the first ones and had I, I think I would have been disappointed. What I was expecting, however, was just another beautiful book filled with wonderful images to give my brain a creative spark. And it did just that.
It's not really a how to, it doesn't lay things out easily, and it's not really for home ideas and living. But it is beautiful, thoughtful, unique and true to Shabby Chic. So if you're in the need of some more inspiration and love her books, this would be a great match. If you're looking to learn more about shabby chic for home and how to do all that, her other books are much, much better.
best cottage style reference.......2005-08-10
If you like the casual comfortable look of overstuffed slip covered furniture, this is the best reference you could buy.
Looking for Femininity.......2005-07-06
This is a great book! With having only sons and a husband, I am a minority in my household. I am constantly surrounded by comic book hero toys and other action figures. The book was so pretty to look at and I enjoyed the femininity of it. It gives great ideas to share with my friends who have daughters.

Engaging and surprising stories of human behavior are dramatically and often humorously portrayed. Each chapter gives a behind-the-scenes look at how therapists work with clients whose problems and behaviors aren't found in standard psychology textbooks. The book also shows how these eminent therapists often cure these apparently intractable problems and learn something about themselves in the process.

Don't bother.......2007-04-17
This book is superficial, gossipy with little insight other than ain't folk strange. Try Love's Executioner by Irvin Yalom for contrast with ease and pleasure of reading
for people who love stories.......2007-04-07
It's too bad that most people won't bother reading a book on psychology unless it's self-help. This book took me completely by surprise with the range and genuine voice. The stories in this book aren't all bizarre - some are more mundane - but they are made worthwhile through their retelling. I think every reader will discover an appreciation for anyone, therapists and otherwise, who has ever ventured into unknown territory in the name of helping another. In fact, the insight that comes from these stories is born out of the years since the anecdote. Every contributor in this volume is interesting, sometimes funny, and always aware of the sheer risks that come from dealing with cases that are unprecedented and unique. There's a senior citizen who is happily prostituting herself to the chagrin of her family, a psychologist who ventures into shamanism for his solution, and even a man who has unusual feelings for cows - all are presented with great heart and never condescension or disgust.
Although this book is by no means a forum for psychological advice or guidance, it might go a long way towards convincing you that you are nowhere as weird as you think.
Chocolate-covered therapy!.......2006-12-31
Pure therapeutic heaven! Well-known therapists share their most bizarre cases that have touched them the most---both in memory and heart. A common denominator to all of these stories was that what ultimately mattered most was the relationship between the therapist and the client, and the ability for the therapist to hear the client's song, even if it was from an unfamiliar genre.
Written with compassion and humanity........2004-02-01
Generally human behaviour is odd at the best of times. As inhabitants of the planet, most of us do try to live happy and productive lives against varying degrees of opposition, and sometimes our coping skills, the actions we take to be happy, appear to others, including ourselves, to be quite bizarre. This book is a selection of unusual cases from the files of leading therapists. It should be made clear from the start that this isn?t a freak show, tales of the macabre, but a genuine telling of memorable cases from professionals who have made it their life?s work to help people in dire need.
After finishing the text, it also became clear to me that the business of the mind, psychiatry and psychology, is by no means a strict science. The various therapeutic techniques out their being used around the world run into the thousands. It is a social science that is constantly changing and developing. In other terms, there is no blanket cure all ? a miracle technique to make us into happy productive people.
After reading these cases, what most of the therapists had in common was their intuition. They?re confronted by an unusual case, and through active listening, a bit of trial and error, in some instances a breakthrough was made. Sometimes a little progress is made and the session ends, leaving the therapist to remain wondering for years what happed to that particular client. Some of the cases in this collection are exceedingly bizarre, while others, to a great extent, touched the heart. Some of us are pretty resilient beings and can put up with a lot of suffering and pain, and somehow come out smiling. Moreover, there are some cases represented in this book that showed me that some of us need our illnesses simply to live on a day-to-day basis.
Out of the thirty-one cases in the text, all interesting and unique in their own way, one stood out for me the most. The therapist was Bradford Keeney, and the case is called: ?The Medicine Man Who Never Had a Vision.? What makes this case unique was Keeney?s uncanny intuition about how to handle the Indian Shaman. The treatment would not be found in any textbook. In fact, the treatment came to him in a vision! The Shaman followed Keeney?s instructions to the letter to great results. What was even more fascinating was what transpired later, when another Indian came to Keeney with a problem that sent chills up my spine. He dreamed of being confronted by warriors, and his face painted red. The man awoke with his face actually painted red! He was troubled by this and needed some advice from the ?white? medicine man. This case reinforced the fact that the mind and spirit have far greater potential and depth than we care to admit.
This book is written with genuine compassion and a noticeable humanity. Highly recommended to those interested in the mind and our culture in general.
Wow...I had to read it twice.......2003-04-05
Just when you thought you couldn't be amazed by something along comes this book. I don't really know who a lot of the therapists are but that didn't keep me from being entranced by this book. The stories of people whose lives are so incredibly complicated either by their own making or by what life had handed them was incredible. I really enjoyed the ways that the counselors were able to help these people with their predicamants. Makes one realize how blessed one's life truly is in comparison to what other people deal with!!

Excellent.......2007-04-06
First, the play is a bonanza for the actor: each of the six actors play six different characters. The play, for lack of a better term, is a tribute (or goodbye?) to the nuclear American Family and to the ideals that forged the character of our nation for the better part of 100 years. The play fails to entirely escape tones of heavy nostalgia - I suspect that was Gurney's goal - and therefore when staged care must be given to resist making it a museum piece or worse, a love story. Gurney does not appear to seek an embrace with the past, not does he wish to completely say goodbye to it.
The Dining Room---Welcoming and Tasteful.......2003-07-28
A.R. Gurney's "The Dining Room" is a play that explores the distresses in upper middle-class life and pokes fun at their realative insignificance. As a critic who's previously performed this play, this author feels that the brief intervals of drama strike with force at an observer's emotions, placated by the occasional burst of sheer and timeless comedy. The unconventional style in which Gurney delivers his message is created through a series of unrelated scenes that intertwine on stage, while keeping a rigid wall between their two existences. As one scene comes to a close, the other begins within the same dining room. This is done without any dialogue exchange or even mention of the others' presence between characters of the old and new scenes. Gurney amuses the audience through light bashing of the rich by having his characters distress over seemingly insignificant problems that range from the pettiest of insults to the improper arrangement of silverware. However, Gurney does remind us that serious misfortunes are encountered by people of all classes. The inevitable death of a beloved father to the gutwrenching mental downfall of an elderly grandmother who is afflicted with the terrible disease of Alzheimer's both highlight this fact of life. Gurney's play is refreshing and inspiring, entertaining and thought provoking. I recomend this play to anyone in the mood for a change from the norm.

Dining Room; not just about food, it could be about you.......1999-12-15
Dining rooms are generally seen as the meeting place of a family. The place where a family can sit down and really talk about how each other's busy lives are going. The place where people that are close can come together and share their thoughts, feelings, and ideas. But the dining room in the play with the same name is a different kind of dining room. This dining room is, in fact, not just one dining room but many of them. The setting in this play is one of different dining rooms in different homes with different people and different situations. It allows the audience to take a small peek into the lives of many individuals that, at one level or another, they can relate to. I have really never read anything like this play before. One of the many interesting aspects about this play is that there are about 60 parts but it is suggested to only use six actors. These six actors would rotate roles and, instead of using different costumes, would change their mannerisms and speech for each character. What an intriguing idea to use for a play. It makes the play almost like a comedy show with different sketches but a constant setting. As a playwright myself, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this play. It gave me a new sense of playwriting. I looked at Gurney's wonderful use of characterization and how he was able to portray all kinds of different people without the use of costuming. That is something that is very difficult to do. For example, in one scene he has an architect and a buyer look at the dining room. Buyer: This room has such resonance. Architect: So does a church but that doesn't mean we have to live in it. And then in a scene later in the play he has two prep-school girls getting ready for a small party. Sarah: Here. Gin and vodka and Fresca. The boys are bringing the pot. Wonderfully written characters add such a dimension to any piece of writing but especially in playwriting. In a play one cannot have the setting change too much because of how difficult it is to technically. The wonderful thing about Gurney is that he used that to his advantage. He took the guidelines that one must look at to write with and made the system work to his benefit. Revolving the play around the dining room is an excellent spawning pool of rich stories and characters. Another thing that I liked about this play was that it had a constant theme. The theme was the portrayal of what Gurney believes to be the dying culture, the upper middle class. He used the dining room as a metaphor for our entire culture. Because it is dramatic writing, Gurney was not able to use much description in the story but he does truly have a feel for the "show, don't tell" concept. The only downside to the play was that it didn't have a main plot point. Although in some ways this makes it an intriguing play it also hinders the audience's ability to get incredibly emotionally involved in the story. It just shows snippets of people's lives and doesn't give the audience too much time to actually care for the characters. This is a problem because if the audience doesn't care what happens, then they aren't going to listen. Overall, this play was a very new and interesting approach to plays and playwriting. I would suggest it to anyone looking for a play that takes the standard tactics of playwriting and turns them on their sides.

Beautiful!!!.......2002-01-19
This book is everything I hoped it would be. The photographs are stunning and the book is full of them. There is virtually no repetition. A beautiful, inspirational tome for anyone who loves to set the table.
GLORIOUS!!.......2001-04-19
I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars. It is an absolutely gorgeous book for anybody interested in table settings of the most elegant kind. As well as spectacular photography of the most sumptuous crystal and china, the text is fascinating as it explains the history of table settings and of individual antiques.
As a person who is particularly interested in mixing and matching colored crystal and different china patterns on the table, I have found it to be of immense help and has given me even more courage to blend different styles together.
I will treasure this book forever.
Incredible Photography and Content!.......1999-11-11
This book is a must for those who truly enjoy a great table! The photos are magnificent and is beautifully written. I found that I learned a LOT by simply looking at the photos of china, crystal and glassware. From this book alone, I chose my sterling silver flatware and china patterns and have never regretted it! The book also gives ideas on simple room decorations as well - even though this is not a primary focus of the book itself. I really can't say enough good about this book......
