5 out of 5 stars Polymer Clay Creative Traditions: Techniques and Projects Inspired by the Fine and Decorative Arts.......2007-08-03

This is the perfect and complete polymer clay book. Step by step are so clear and Judy Belcher is a talented and generous clay artist. Must buy.

5 out of 5 stars Right Up There With the Best of Them!.......2007-06-13

This is a wonderfully inspirational polymer clay book, with a fresh approach and new ideas. The photos, diagrams, and written instructions are detailed enough to actually be useful and the projects are enticing enough to make readers want to actually try them, rather than just view the pictures. This is a fine addition to my polymer clay library and a book I'll refer to often.

5 out of 5 stars A real inspiration!!.......2007-04-11

Polymer clay artists are frequently inspired by other art forms
-from fibre and metalwork to painting and sculpture.
Judy shows how to turn inspiration into reality and just how versatile
polymer clay is for this purpose.

Each chapter starts from a material-based art tradition, eg. glass, metal,
wood, and develops the techniques associated with these crafts in concise,
clearly explained projects. Each technique has a gallery of beautiful
examples of both the source artforms, such as exquisite pieces of
wood furniture, and several works in polymer clay inspired by the material
and sometimes combined with it in mixed media objects.

Judy has selected her gallery artists with care -the best work by the best artists-dazzling!
By illustrating high standards of design and execution, she places polymer clay
on an equal footing with older art material traditions and demands that we keep aiming higher.
For me this is the real inspirational effect of a great book.
Well done, Judy Belcher.

Book Description

For 100 years, Steuben glass has represented the epitome of American crystal--internationally acclaimed, a gift of presidents, the treasured possession of generations of collectors. In this lavishly illustrated book, revised and fully updated to celebrate Steuben's centennial, Mary Jean Madigan traces the company's fascinating history and the manufacture of "the most perfect crystal the world has ever known."

Madigan provides an illustrated identification guide to virtually all Steuben pieces made since 1993, from one-of-a-kind museum objects to functional items such as glasses, candlesticks, bowls, and vases.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Still The Essential Reference Work for clear Steuben Works.......1999-03-08

If you are a Steuben collector or simply one interested in the history and work of America's preeminent producer of fine crystal, Ms. Madigan's book is an essential and interesting reference work. The book features many beautiful photographs of important works by Steuben's best designers. The book's most valuable feature for collectors is its comprehensive catalogue of some two thousand Steuben items produced during the years 1933-1981. Although most stock pieces are represented only by line drawings and key dimension (rather than by photography), the information furnished is usually sufficient to facilitate identification of Steuben products, if not especially helpful on issues of valuation. If you love Steuben, you will want to own a copy of this book.

This is an outstanding book for kids and helps them learn a lot about different world cultures. The activities are fun and creative - I haven't seen a book like this in a long time. The 'good will message flag' activity from Tibet sends a wonderful message and is fun to make. In addition to the activities the author provides plenty of cultural information that kids and adults will find facinating. This book will be enjoyed by teachers, parents and kids from around the world.

Book Description

East Coast Rug-Hooking Designs is filled with over thirty patterns for coastal-inspired hooked mats, and each pattern is accompanied by the stories that inspired them. The designs range from those suitable for beginners to those that will challenge the experienced hooker. Each design includes basic instructions, a pattern to copy, a list of necessary supplies, rug-hooking tips, a story about the design and a photograph of the finished hooked rug, by the author. Readers will be drawn into stories about women, friendship, community and tradition. It encourages new modern designs for hooked rugs while at the same time respecting the tradition of rug-hooking throughout Atlantic Canada.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor! .......2007-05-26

This book was a bit of a disappointment to me. I am a beginning rug-hooker and was hoping for more how-to info, as well as history of rug-hooking, e.g. how sailors used canvas to hook rugs while on long sea voyages. While I admire Ms. Fitzpatrick's work--stunning, to say the least-- I found the book too prosy, and bogged down by what inspires the artist. Yes, I can generate my own ideas from the work featured in the book, but overall the product was not what I expected.

    Book Description

The last twenty-five years have seen a flourishing of Japanese studio crafts that we are only now beginning to learn about in the West. An extensive network of craft practitioners--in ceramics, lacquerwork, woodwork, basketry, textiles, and fiberwork, metalwork, jewelry, and glass--has evolved to produce a huge range of work rich in its diversity of style and technique. This book serves as an introduction to the activities pursued by these contemporary Japanese makers.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The beauty of Japanese crafts as interpreted today.......2001-03-01

This is a very good introduction to the gorgeous arts of Japan done by contemporary craftsmen. There is a long Japanese tradition of ceramics, lacquerwork, woodwork, basketry, textiles, jewellery, metalwork and glass. The book covers modern interpretation of these age-old crafts. There are many full color plates, hence the price of the book. However, it is not possible to appreciate the intense craftsmanship and skill of the artisans without top quality photography. A beautiful book

      Book Description

Furnishing the 18th Century is a collection of original essays that delves into the history of furniture, examining every day items such as tea tables, jewelry boxes, dressers and sofas to uncover the social practices of the 18th century, including tea drinking, gambling, prostitution, conversation, and letter writing, both in Europe and in the colonies. The essays take serious consideration of what the furniture of one's house has to say about 18th century taste, social hierarchies, consumerism, gender, and even sex.

5 out of 5 stars Factual and Visual Guide to the World of Jane Austen.......2001-10-11

I bought this book after being pleased but not satisfied with Maggie Lane's "Jane Austen's World." This book is a much more indepth guide to the world of the Regency. It includes many pictures of the interior of Regency houses and much more on the fashion of the day, including pictures and terms that will be helpful if researching or just very curious about the costuming of the day. While "Jane Austen's World" had much much more on Jane Austen's life and family, this book takes a much more indepth look at the times of the author including entertainment, exterior and interior of the homes and the fashion. I recommend this to anyone interested in learning more about the Regency or interested in writing a story, play, etc. about the period. Visually and factually satisfying.

4 out of 5 stars Jane Austen: In Style.......2000-12-16

I bought this book because I was interested in Jane Austen. The book is divided up into sections such as country life, clothing, manners, food, etc. with a lot of details about this time and how it relates to Jane's life and situations. The book is lavishly illustrated with full page color photographs, and smaller pictures of Jane, Cassandra, and articles made or used by the Austen Family. It is well written and fun to read. It makes a good starting point for getting the feel of what life was like in Georgian England.
