Elizabeth Dole says, "Franklin has provided a very thoughtful and provocative account of how a young man develops and matures in his faith as the son of one of the world's most respected and admired spiritual leaders."

An Exellent Read on Franklin Graham.......2007-04-06
In my humble opinion, Franklin Graham has written a frank and honest story of his struggles growing up in his famous father's shadow and how he has eventually formed his own identity.
Franklin describes many details of his life:
1. Growing up and early years in North Carolina.
2. Relationships with his family.
3. Going to school and the rebellion against authority he displayed.
4. How he eventually came into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
5. His own marriage and family life.
6. His involvement with Samaritan's Purse.
7. How he became involved in preaching himself with the BGEA.
8. Important people and missionary travels he has been on.
All in all, this is an excellent story by someone who is continuing the Graham legacy. While some people may not like his convictions, one has to admit that at least you know where he stands.
Read and enjoy. Highly recommended!
Inspiring Biography.......2006-08-24
This biography by Franklin Graham is inspirational and interesting.
Graham, who is the son of Billy Graham and Ruth Bell Graham, grew up as a bit of a rebel. This is the story of how his life turned around and he began serving God after years of running from him.
Although his rebellion was pretty tame by today's standards (smoking, drinking, and defying authority primarily), it was pretty significant for the eldest son of the world's most famous evangelist.
Franklin Graham matured to become a significant force for good in his own right - and in a different way from his famous father. Franklin has been the head of Samaritan's Purse, a Christian relief organization, for many years.
I would recommmend this biography for anyone who is interested in an inspiring story of a fine Christian man.
God answered the prayer of Billy Graham........2006-02-24
Franklin Graham pours out his life in this book so that we can see the grace of God that conquers even those with a rebel spirit. I enjoyed this book. I could see that God has blessed Franklin Graham much through the faith and prayers of his family.
Great for teens ESPECIALLY!!!.......2006-01-23
This book is about the life of Franklin Graham and the struggles he went through being the son of the world's greatest evangelist billy graham. This book is great for teens that have just committed their life to Jesus Christ. This book inspired me and will inspire you just as much.
My No 1 Recommended Book for Young Christians, Especially........2006-01-16
If a young christian has committed him/herself to God, this book will help him/her strengthen the faith tremendously.
(By no means the book is too naive for grown-ups.)
If it helped me in my 40's so much, the book will definitely do more for younger folks.
This book has all the right qualities for christian books for young people. Clean & Honest, yet inspiring and revealing of core of christianity.
As for the negative review of other book-reviewer shown in this page : the person is completely misleading. Not only the book does NOT address on any aspects of hindu or any other religion to the extent that he's implying, let alone gives the readers a sense of disrespect or any false notion, but also if any part of book had mentioned about other religions, it is expressed only in a respectful, polite manner.
I read this book myself 3 years ago; and now I'm ordering 5 more copies at 1 cent per each so that I can give to others
* Remarks: There's a used books link on every searched book page.
I'm an avid user of amazon used book sellers. Their books are in excellent conditions.
good condition.

Love Laughter, get this book.......2006-07-10
Excellent work as usual by McManus. Buy two, so when you wear the first one out, or a family member sneaks it out of the house...you'll still have a copy.
'Pass out laughing' funny.......2005-01-09
I have always thought that Patrick McManus is the funniest writer on the planet. I read his stories when I need to laugh or relax. Sometimes I irritate my wife by reading it in bed. I try not to laugh out loud, but I only succeed in sounding like I am trying to muffle continuous sneezes.
However, not everyone gets it. I have been shocked by watching people read McManus without so much as a smile (though most start snorting like wild pigs on acid) . My only guess is that getting McManus requires a couple things. First, it requires some understanding of his experiences. He absolutely nails all of the stupid things 'outdoors men (outdoors people)' do and think, but don't want anybody to know about. Second, you have to see the self-deprecating aspect of his humor. Third, you can't look for great literature in integrated books. Patrick McManus is an excellent writer, if you see these as independent stories simply collected in a volume. They are meant for adults who want to laugh at themselves. So, If you are willing to or already meet the above three criteria, you will love this book.
By the way, I am a professor of clinical psychology and (other than worrying a little about McManus) I sometimes recommend this and other McManus books. I do this with people who have racing thoughts and anxiety at bedtime, and when I believe they have the necessary experiences to find it funny. It often works quite well. I think of his stories as little pieces of happiness. (Oh, that even makes me sick to hear. Sorry)
McManus Indeed Strikes Again.......2003-02-04
This is the eighth time that Mr. McManus has put together a collection of his humorous experiences from childhood, through his early days as a manipulator of truth at a public relations agency, and of course more recent forays as the intrepid guide and indomitable leader of a variety of outings. This is the fourth collection of his stories that I have read, and I believe that leaves me with 8 to still enjoy. One of the remaining books is done with his sister who is generally known in these books as the, "Troll", and that volume is to have dozens of variations for recipes on, "whatchucalit stew".
It would be unfair to say that there is no familiarity in these stories as I read the 4th collection. There is a great difference between familiarity and repetition, and the author is not guilty of the latter. What is becoming familiar are the friends of his childhood through to the present day with names that would make Dickens proud were he alive and writing in 20th Century Idaho. These characters are based upon real people that he has mercifully disguised, as how many people would want the moniker Rancid Crabtree, with all the attendant implications?
These stories are innocent, honest, and without anything that would keep them on a coffee table for any member of household to read. Even his first kiss in the back of a friend's car, that is a stretch to call a kiss, would be comfortable in a G rated Disney film. His stories may primarily take place in his, "Gothic Idaho", and other states in the West and Pacific Northwest, but they translate to everyone's childhood to some degree, and are pure reading enjoyment, completely without pretense or prevarication.
Everything Pat writes is hilarious, subtle, witty..........2001-05-21
tasteful, and completely obnoxious. Out of the four books of his that I have read [ The night the bear ate goombaw, they shoot canoes... Fine and pleasant... and this one] This is the funniest one in my opinion. If you liked any of his other books, You gotta like this one. They are all a collection of the same kind of stories, except his latest book. They are all short and simple and run along the same lines. Male stupidity, outdoor troubles, childhood memories of embarassment and goofy adventures. If you grew up in the country especially, you will probably slap your knee after every paragraph. Pat McManus is the Diabolical genius of humorous writing. This guy ruins me for anybody else who writes something with only the intention of being funny. And I don't mind at all. I'm willing to be spoiled by such great writing. Anybody who knows a troop of crazy eccentric characters from their own childhood or right now, will identify with crazy eddie muldoon and Melba Peachbottom. Yeah that's right, Melba.... Peach... Bottom. I'm sure he changes the names with names like that and His friends girlfriend Velveeta.
The best part of his writing is letting him rope you in to actually believing a conversation or interaction and then realizing that you just even if only for a second bought into the most ridiculous thing, and he knew you would all along. Feeling stupid and flat out tricked is the funniest part of reading these books. Some of the people and thoughts, couldn't even be made up by THIS guy, so you have to believe some of it. And once you believe some of it, he's got you set up right where he wants you, IT'S GREAT. If you appreciate good humor and take things all in fun, or need a laugh after a horrifying camping trip, you should definetely buy this book or any other Pat book. You can just expect the same hilarious thing with most of the other ones, because they're all short funny stories. My cheeks hurt from smiling and my ''Funnnnnnnnnnyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!'' muscle hurts from laughing. Get it.
I think I broke a rib laughing.......1998-05-11
Warning!!! This book could cause divorce!! I was reading in bed with my wife trying to sleap and while holding in the laughter the bed was shaking so hard the neighbors gave me a wink and told my wife she looked like she needed rest..... If you enjoy/endure the outdoors you can relate to this book and will not be able to put it down.
Book Description
Sprung from the pages of The New Testament, Living Water is a gripping and lyrical portrayal of a young women's search for identity set against the strict social confines of the time. This extraordinary first novel brings to life one of the most mysterious and intriguing characters in the Bible – the woman at the well.
In a village torn apart by senseless violence, a young girl struggles to mute her passion for life to survive the harsh social restrictions of her people. Catapulted into a series of abusive marriages, she soon becomes a woman unrecognisable from the little girl she once was. After her fifth husband is found bloody and beaten, she emerges amid the scandal and accusations to try and reclaim her life. In the tradition of Their Eyes Are Watching God, The Color Purple and Paradise, Obery Hendricks uses both fine detail and broad strokes to crisply depict this period of early history. And in doing so, this sophisticated literary debut delivers a universal tale of liberation and reconciliation, love and faith.

Living Waters.......2007-07-25
I really enjoyed this fictional portrayal of the woman at the well. Her strength came alive, not just her shortcomings. It made you think, about your past, present and your future. And it most important lesson of all was that it is not where you are it is where you are going. My thought process was challenged by Hendricks portrayal of Christ which was as I found out later his intention.
Excellent choice for a book discussion.......2005-09-01
This book is wonderful. The women's guild at my church featured it as a topic of a book discussion last year. We had the pleasure of taking part in a telephone conference with the author Obery Hendricks. He was very gracious. It was a wonderful experience. The reader gets an understanding of how women and minorities were marginalized in society during Biblical times.
A gripping, at times lusty, tale and an engaging read.......2004-06-29
This is a gripping, at times lusty, tale based on the life story of the Samaritan Woman. LIVING WATER is not a stereotypically lightweight, biblical novel. It's for readers who are ready for a challenge and willing to look for truths presented in nontraditional forms.
Author Obery Hendricks, a seminary "professor of biblical interpretation," calls this, his first novel, "an African American retelling of the New Testament story of the woman at the well who was married to five successive husbands at a time when women did not have the right to choose either marriage or divorce." Ethnic overtones are evident in some characters' nicknames (Sonny Boy and Big Mama) and patterns of dialogue ("Oh Lordy, we're in trouble now" and "Don't he talk sweet"). But there are deeper parallels: The ravages of slavery and harsh control influence the heart of the story --- the Samaritan men being humiliated and beaten down by the Romans; the women being powerless property of the husbands who have lost respect for themselves and take out their frustration on their women.
The book opens with a short, startling death scene of the Samaritan woman's fifth husband. Then Part 1 is a flashback, from prenuptial childhood up to that pivotal, bloody mess. She --- her name is Maryam, though significantly we aren't told this for 250 pages --- is a spunky, in-your-face kind of kid who sadly learns, from her kindhearted grandmother, Ma Tee, that spunk is not acceptable for girls. "Atop the coarse woolen tunic that is [the girl's] usual attire is now draped a stale, heavy garment of carefulness. Ma Tee has tried her best to craft it to her size, yet it does not fit. Still, she will dutifully struggle to wear it, though its weight will sag her heart to its knees." And this narrative comment comes even before she's married to and beaten down by her first husband and abandoned by numbers two, three, and four.
This is a feminist story, but not drastically so; it is egalitarian more than man bashing. The big cast of characters --- five (or is it six?) husbands, three father figures, a brother-in-law, Messiah Jesus, and more --- include bad men and good; similarly with the Samaritan women. In a supplemental reader's guide, Hendricks explains that the Samaritan woman's journey "to be free of male domination and mistreatment was also my own journey to free myself from the roles of dominator and mistreater."
Theologically conservative readers may rankle at some feminist theology, but, again, this is not as radical as it might be. Hendricks interprets biblical passages (mostly from Proverbs, once from Luke) that personify Wisdom (a feminine Hebrew word) as being descriptive of "the woman-side of God."
For a novel that is replete with social commentary applicable to any age --- including a chapter on an itinerant, fraudulent faith healer --- LIVING WATER is an engaging read. Part 2 --- in which Maryam claims her name, takes up with a man who loves her and treats her well, and becomes a disciple of Jesus --- includes powerful scenes of redemption, even unto the last page, which drew a tear to my eye.

AView of God From a Woman's Perspective.......2003-08-04
This is a touching story of a young womans journey from her joy of life to near-death despair around to a greater joy of life.
It truly celebrates the strength of womanhood. The descriptions were vivid and the personalities so real, I felt I knew all of the characters. Because all women have experienced Maryam's life in some form, this story will touch your heart in an unbelievable way. I loved this book!
From Heartwrenching to Heartwarming ..........2003-07-02
In this glorious tale of redemptive love BEFORE we know what it is, Maryam flowers despite the heartships and trials of her life. Hendricks is a master storyteller who gives us the depth of anguish from both the men and women, while not excusing the pain that the men are causing the women in this Novel. Given to me by a Pastor who shares the stories of women in the Bible with his congregation, I read it from front to end without stopping, finding the message that God loves us even when we don't see it. Worth reading, but more, worth its use as a Bible study tool. Wonderful story with a dynamic ending!
Book Description
What's wrong with foreign aid? Many policymakers, aid practitioners, and scholars have called into question its ability to increase economic growth, alleviate poverty, or promote social development. At the macro level, only tenuous links between development aid and improved living conditions have been found. At the micro level, only a few programs outlast donor support and even fewer appear to achieve lasting improvements. The authors of this book argue that much of aid's failure is related to the institutions that structure its delivery. These institutions govern the complex relationships between the main actors in the aid delivery system and often generate a series of perverse incentives that promote inefficient and unsustainable outcomes. In their analysis, the authors apply the theoretical insights of the new institutional economics to several settings. First, they investigate the institutions of Sida, the Swedish aid agency, to analyze how that aid agency's institutions can produce incentives inimical to desired outcomes, contrary to the desires of its own staff. Second, the authors use cases from India, a country with low aid dependence, and Zambia, a country with high aid dependence, to explore how institutions on the ground in recipient countries also mediate the effectiveness of aid. Throughout the book, the authors offer suggestions about how to improve aid's effectiveness. These suggestions include how to structure evaluations in order to improve outcomes, how to employ agency staff to gain from their on-the-ground experience, and how to engage stakeholders as "owners" in the design, resource mobilization, learning, and evaluation processes of development assistance programs.

EXCELLENT BOOK !!! A TRULY INCREDIBLE READ........1999-04-06
This was by far the best book that I have ever read. The author speaks of his life in a way that is easy to identify with. His childhood escapades will make you laugh and his descriptions of mission work will move you to tears. I was greatly inspired by this book and loaned it to family and friends. They enjoyed it so much that they loaned it to their friends and bought their own copies. I bought a second copy since the first was tattered from being read so much. I cannot recommend this book highly enough!
A Regular Guy With an Extrodinary Life!.......1997-09-05
It was refreshing to read of Franklin's very normal childhood, including his candid discription of his rebellion, confusion and loneliness. Balancing that with a clear portrayal of his parent's love and consistant acceptance of him, even while not the model son, made his story come across as every bit sincere. Amazingly, in spite of all his rebellion, the pages of this book clearly show that the adventurous times of Franklin's life didn't occur until after his committment to Christ
Franklin Graham delivers a moving biography.......1997-05-11
Franklin Graham is my new hero! Frankling writes honestly and fairly about the pressures of growing up "Graham." Covering the period from his childhood through his current position as head of Samaritan's Purse, Fraklin points out not his own progress but the unfailing love and presence of God in his life. This book moved me - to laughter, to tears and, most importantly, closer to God

Never thirst again.......2002-10-11
A wonderful and insightful commentary on the story of Jesus and the Samaritan woman in chapter 4 of John's Gospel. Provides links and readings to other writings showing the importance of wells and water in biblical times. My major "AHA" on this book was the way in which the author demonstrated how this encounter showed reconciliation in practice at three levels - between men and women; between nations and between God and humanity.

Love them!.......2007-10-13
We own several of these Patricia Pingry books. They are long enough to give basic information on each subject but just short enough to finish reading to my 3 and 4 year old before their attention span runs out. They are also pretty durable.
