Customer Reviews:
One of my favorite design books........2001-03-23
Often I'll enjoy a design book the first time I read through it, but I won't find myself interested in a second perusal. This book , however, is one I find myself drawn to time after time. Not only are the rooms beautifully photographed and fascinating to look at, but the glimpse at lives of the people who live in them is compelling. There are also enough different and unique styles covered by the book that each one doesn't begin to blur with the previous one as sometimes happens in design books that restrict themselves to a particular style. Highly recommended.
Great photographs.......2000-04-28
This book has beautiful and stylish photos that really capture the essence of San Francisco. It is a great gift for anyone who lives in San Francisco or has visited the area. It's a good coffee table book.
Book Description
The successor to the tremendously popular guide book, Architecture and Design: SF (1998), this delightful traveler's companion covers the best in classic and contemporary architecture throughout the Bay Area. It's not just for tourists; in fact, it's a must-have for Bay Area architecture and design aficionados, the perfect item to keep in the glove compartment for reference in any neighborhood. The first half of this durable, vinyl-bound book offers a comprehensive survey of the area's architectural history, dating fro California's beginnings to the present. The rest of the book is divided into regional chapters, studded with useful maps marked with architectural points of interests. Each of the mapped landmarks is accompanied by a summary description of the project, information on the architect, date of construction and a precise address. With numerous color photos and sketches of the projects.
Customer Reviews:
Not bad, but not comprehensive.......2007-04-04
Any book that claims to be a guide to the architecture of the San Francisco Bay Area has to be either thick as a brick (a la White & Willensky's guide to NYC) or carefully (and subjectively) selective. This book is an example of the latter. While I like the color photography, the essays and the broad geographic coverage of the book, I don't particularly like the selected buildings. All the real landmarks are here, but beyond that there's a definite domestic, modernist and arts & crafts favoritism. It's much more like Sutro's AIA guide to San Diego than Gebhard & Winters' guide to Los Angeles. Chances are, if your favorite buildings are landmarks (of any age) or modernist attractions, they'll be in here. If they're older traditional structures that don't quite make landmark status, they probably will NOT be in here. So that begs the question: When are we going to get a really good comprehensive guide to the entire Bay Area? Granted, such a task is enormous, but not impossible. Such guides exist for New York City and the state of North Carolina, for example.
The volume itself is attractively printed and bound.
Good Guide for a Walking Tour.......2007-02-11
About 25% of this book is an architectural history of Sanfrancisco and the Bay area. This sectiondescribes the various stages in development in San Francisco beginning with the earliest days of the cities development, going through the Indian/Hispanic period, the Victorian era, Eclecticism, modernism and the contemporary.
Following this is a guide to the buildings in the area that have some architectural significance. This section is broken down into seventeen general areas that have maps with the building shown, and then a brief description of the particular houses.
The book is printed on very thin paper to make it eash to carry. It has a permanent ribbon type page marker. These lend the book to being carried with you as you make a walking tour of the areas of interest in the city. Much of downtown San Francisco is such a small geographical area that it lends itself very well to walking tours. Many of the houses illustrated are still in use as private residences, so interior access will be limited, but many of the other building from churches to schools, to commercial buildings will be open.

Book Description
Modernism eschews historical references and ornament in favor of pure forms. In homes and furnishings, this translates into dramatic symmetrical compositions, geometric shapes, and a fondness for open spaces. San Francisco Modern is the first book to survey modernism as it is seen in many magnificent Bay Area residences. Graced with dramatic landscapes and light, San Francisco has inspired some of the world's most creative and influential architects and designers. It has also thoroughly embraced the modern aesthetic. In this richly illustrated tour of some of the Bay Area's most striking homes, author Zahid Sardar unveils 32 premier examples of modernist exteriors and interiors, from apartments on famed Russian Hill to spacious lofts in the funky South of Market district, and from new homes built in Oakland's fire-ravaged hills to stunning houses in the wine country. With a foreword by Mario Botta and an introduction discussing the origins of Bay Area modernism, San Francisco Modern is an impressive sourcebook of contemporary style, one to be embraced by architects and designers as well as home owners looking for inspiration.

Real modern design.......2001-01-03
What a great book packed with pictures. The design is very modern and unconventional (read expensive). This is a very fun book to review. If you can't afford the architecture costs there are many ideas you can incorporate into a more typical home design.
Beautiful pix w lots of design ideas. Great Sonoma compound!.......1998-10-18
Coffee table book showing all the nicest spots in the Bay Area. The spread on the family compound in Sonoma is worth the price alone!

Eclectic, Cozy SF Style.......2000-06-20
A gift from my mother-in-law, it is one of my very favorite interior design books. I'm a San Franciscan and have this book on the mantel of my fireplace to enjoy anytime. My MIL in Indiana has a copy as well and loves it just as much as I do. These interiors are the perfect example of not following one design school of thought and decorating with what you love to create interesting rooms that reflect who you are and what you love. What I wouldn't give to live in some of these beautiful homes! This is a great gift for anyone who loves decorating, especially if they love SF. The photos are wonderful.
Interiors that are poetry and magic........2000-05-06
This is a book I enjoy looking at and reading again and again because it's like taking a personal tour through these stunning homes. Creative, magical, unique as the people who live there. Daring but with charm and lots of character. That's how I would describe these interiors. This is a fabulous book!
Clearly the best interior design book in years!.......2000-03-23
I own about 20 interior design books and this is by far the best . I love this wonderful book not only because the stunning pictures it presents but also this book accurately protraits the local styles and favorites. This book is very well organized. The more I read the more I regret the fact that I no longer live in there. If you love the city or have a real appreciation for interior design, buy it and you won't be disappointed by it. If you are just looking for a coffee table book, skip it. This book is too good to be just sitting on the table.

Robin Williams and Sally Field lived the dream of many in the movie Mrs. Doubtfire--residing in a Queen Anne cottage in San Francisco. Richard Sexton, who himself lives in a small hillside cottage overlooking the city by the bay, has translated his passion for these quaint, rustic, and informal dwellings into a volume of captivating color images. You can live the cottage life vicariously through Sexton; his photographs have an almost three-dimensional feel that gives you the sense of being there. Picturing yourself having lunch on the deck of a houseboat shown in these pages is a breeze, for he is a master of lighting and mood.
Book Description
Small space? No problem - big style on a small scale awaits at every turn in The Cottage Book. Islands of pastoral bliss nestled in the urban landscape, the cottages of the San Francisco Bay Area have an aesthetic all their own, but one that works well just about anywhere. Richard Sexton's classic book in these irrestible hideaways is now back in stock featuring a new cover. In these colorful pages we visit timeless rustic retreats by Bernard Maybeck, chic city homes on a small scale, flower-strewn cottages tucked into sunny nooks, house-boat cottages, and a number of "shacks" turned upscale simple. A successful case for small is beautiful, here is ample inspiration for creating comfort and style when spaces is a a premium - including lots of great ideas for apartment dwellers.
Customer Reviews:
Less is more in this small book about small homes..........2002-07-18
I liked the book. Its not a builder's treatise nor a decorator's reference, but it contains elements of both, with a little landscape design thrown in for good measure. Its an abbreviated look at the essence of cottage living, what makes the cottage lifestyle unique and (for some) worthwhile. And it's illustrated with a cross-section of styles from the San Francisco Bay area, from Maybeck to Modern, Victorian to Houseboat.
I find the photos relaxing, informative, and inspiring. The text is thought-provoking without being pseudo-intellectual, enthusiastic without being preachy. The book seeks to examine the pro's and con's of cottage living in less than 1000 sq. ft., and to portray the beauty in these San Francisco gems.
The book, like the cottage lifestyle it espouses, is neither large nor showy, but will be appreciated by those who would trade size and complexity for style with an open air of honest simplicity, who prefer herb tea over canned soda pop, who understand the essence of the artist's dictum "less is more".
An extremely boring little book.......2000-12-06
I read about this book in an amazon customer review that was attached to another book, so I got this. Mistake! Iwas hoping to get some ideas and inspiration, but all I found here was a lineup of depressing little homes. And mostly in beiges and brown. I couldn't wait to escape from the pages of this book. Also, the book's title suggests that this will be about cottages, in general, but it's about San Francisco area cottages. If you want cottage-style decorating, this is not the book for you. It won't help you much if you want to build a new cottage either. it's more like a little term paper on one region's homes.
The classic book on San Francisco Bay Area cottages.......1998-09-03
I am a native San Franciscan living in a middle-of-the-block cottage in what the author calls "that quirky San Francisco tradition of a back yard house." With the assistance of Sally B. Woodbridge's excellent historical introduction, Richard Sexton describes our San Francisco Bay Area cottages perfectly. The superb photographs complement quotes from some of the owners regarding what they think about their cottages: "Living in a cottage is somewhat like living on a ship. One learns to be very selective about possessions. The trade-off is the uniqueness of the living experience." And "Finding your cottage is like Goldilocks finding the chair that is just right. It wraps around you in cozy fashion and all seems right with the world." I've given copies of this book to friends who live elsewhere because it captures not only the joy of living in one of these cottages but helps all of us, no matter where we live, gain a better sense of home.
A mini-vacation between two hard covers........1998-04-14
An informative, enjoyable, aesthetically pleasing book about the cottages and cottage styles of San Francisco. The first chapter tells the story of how San Francisco cottages developed, and then specific cottages are showcased. Many views are of the exteriors, but some include interior photos with the homeowners' stories and quotes. Many individual cottages and styles are shown, providing variety and a feast for the eye. This book is a great "get-away" when you can't actually get away, and leads to very pleasant daydreaming.

Book Description
San Francisco has long been one of America's landmark cities, a gleaming jewel of the West Coast surrounded on three sides by water, well known for its hilly streets, Victorian residences, and a free spiritness that made it the home of the Beat Generation, flower power, and gay pride. But over time, this "storybook city of spires and minarets" has also made a name for itself in the world of architecture and design. Victorian architecture gradually gave way to Art Deco and was followed by a modern movement that today favors a mixture of both minimalist and more decorative styles. This elegant, lavishly illustrated book takes the reader on an exciting tour through the latest in San Francisco's residential design and uncovers yet another dynamic facit of this unique North American city.

Libraries specializing in architecture and interior design will want to include San Francisco Houses in their collection: there are over four hundred pages packed with color photos and discussions of the latest architectural trends of the city. Floor plans, histories, and influences are included in discussions presented in English, French, German and Spanish. The range of styles is impressive and will intrigue any student of contemporary architecture.

Full disclosure, I work for this company. Having said that, I am a perfectionist and highly critical and I think this book is wonderful. We are featured on pages 44-75 of this book. Since I was a child I have always enjoyed looking at photographs of homes and of this wonderful city. Now, as an adult and a homeowner and the Office Manager for Levy Art & Architecture, I feel privileged to work with such talented co-workers and wonderful people.
