Good Techniques for Intermediate PS Users.......2007-10-06
When I picked up "Skin", I was looking for a more advanced beauty retouching manual. Unfortunately, it wasn't as extensive as I had hoped.
This book is great for intermediate Photoshop users who need to hone their skills in the area of beauty retouching. Advanced users who want an in depth look at all aspects of beauty retouching should keep their eyes out for something else. I still haven't found it.
Very helpful.......2007-09-25
I agree with the other 5 star reviews. The only thing I'd like to add is part of the foreword by Gerald Bybee:
"If you're looking for pointers on shooting nudes or tutorials on photographing sexy models in the desert, this book is not for you. There is already a plethora of those pseudo-technical books explointing the throngs of photo voyeurs. Lee isn't about exploitation of our society's fascination with naked skin. Lee's fascination is simply with digital imaging technique focused on the practical application of photographing people, who coincidentally are primarily dermal by nature."
If you are like me and don't want a book full of nude models sitting around the house, then don't let this book's title keep you from buying it. There is a thumbnail of the most nude picture in the book on the cover (3rd down on the left side) and is the image of a woman's back. Lee Varis does a good job of talking about and showing examples of skin without including pictures you may not want your children seeing.
great book.......2007-09-24
Great book mostly for post processing in photoshop. Espesially about how to treat skincolor. Also a littel bit of how to light. Many usable photoshop techniques. Just get it!
EXCELLENT book.......2007-09-07
One of the most focused books on lighting and Photoshopping people I have ever read - it's very advanced, but well explained. This book will help you push yourself when it comes to this subject. Refreshing and different approach in his writing.
the book is great.......2007-09-05
The book is very helpful. The book is based on Photoshop CS2, so if you're like me and still using CS, some of the tutorials won't work.

Best Book on Industrial Refrigeration Systems.......2006-09-14
It's an oldie, but a goodie! It's still useful ,relevant and dependable. For readers who want the kindergarten pictorial paperback, here you will be greatly disappointed. It does have clear schematical drawings and diagrams,in no-nonsense black and white. The formulas and equations are plentiful and helpful. It's just the best handbook on all aspects and applications for workplace industrial refrigeration operations.I have not found another ,in this particular area, that is on par or better than this one.
Great info, but not for the average person.......2004-04-27
I enjoyed reading this book as a more intermediate industrial Mechanic, but for that price I expected a book with glossy pictures. I feel the book was over priced for a bunch of pages with drawings. Just a few black and white pics of equipment, and lots of complicated other stuff. The best pic was the cover. To really teach somebody this field you need to be a lot more visual.
I wouldn't recommend this book to a beginner. It would be a bit frustrating. But for someone who just wants a reference book with lots of useful information I think this book is for you.
The book for all refrigeration system designers.......2000-06-04
I have covered this book in length-no other book or handbook comes close in terms of simplicity of it's explaination. The latest ASHRAE Refrigeration Handbook is a good reference to have when using this book as there are cross references.Value for money and looking forward to the next book that would be specific on Ammonia Refrigeration Systems design.
Best industrial refrigeration book ever made!.......1999-11-20

Book Description
Updated with a new focus on digital imaging technologies, the new edition of this guide for photography professionals discusses how to improve lighting, digital capture, and client posturing techniques in the camera room so that less time is spent making computerized corrections in the digital darkroom. Posing and lighting strategies for minimizing perceived faults in the client's appearance, such as under-eye circles, bald spots, and tummy bulges, are provided, along with techniques for gracefully addressing and resolving potential appearance problems without demoralizing the client. Pointers are also given for effectively using Adobe Photoshop for the image problems that remain, including information on digitally removing braces and smoothing stray hairs.

I learned so much from this book. It was very well written.
Corrective Lighting, Posing & Retouching for Digital Portrait Photographers.......2006-07-31
Excellant introductory look at Portrait Photography. Part of the art of getting a good result in portraits is the skill of posing your subject correctly & in such a way that you can overcome any flaws etc. Excellent book for Portrait photographers wanting to do more & develop their skills
Great book for getting the best photos of your subjects.......2006-06-30
Great book not so much on lighting as it is on positioning your subjects so when you do snap the shutter they are posied to look their best. This can be hard for folks overweight, this book explains how you can position just about anyone to make their photos look better and they will feel better about it.
Book Description
The characteristics of light, including its intensity, direction, and color temperature, are primary factors in determining how a subject will be recorded. This tutorial provides photographers with a solid understanding of filters, allowing them to control the light available to them, thus capturing their subjects in the most flattering way possible. Beginning with an overview of the color wheel, essential to any discussion of filters, the book then explores all aspects of filter use, from special effects filters to utilizing black and white filters with color film, soft focus, star filters, graduated color, double-exposure filters, and diffusion filters.

Book Description
Lighting design, long regarded as a pragmatic and purely technical aspect of construction planning, has increasingly developed into a discipline of its own over the past years. This publication recognises recent developments by combining the technical sphere with an artistic perspective, centred on the question of the role of natural and artificial light in the perception of a variety of (urban) landscapes. The first section of the book describes techniques for creating nocturnal landscapes, analysing these according to typology (coastal, riverside, lakeside, mountain, forest, marsh, or quarry and industrial sceneries) and concept of illumination. We embark on a process of learning to read (illuminated) landscapes. The second section presents detailed documentation of 21 international case-studies arranged according to type and drawn, for example, from Great Britain, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Japan and Singapore.
Book Description
The author shows how to find and choose subjects, position and guide models, and take the pictures.
Customer Reviews:
Terrific underwater photos don't just "happen"........2006-03-19
Jim Church was an astonishing photographer and those that have followed in his footsteps owe much to him. This book is one that I recommend to ALL divers starting off in underwater photography. Have you ever come home with a bunch of shots only to find that none of them really "grab you"?....this boom is for you. Simply and clearly, the text and photo examples show you how to turn an ordinary shot into a "Wow!" shot.
Start here and you can't go wrong.......2002-10-31
This is Jim Church's answer to those who say that you must have a "God given eye" to take great photographs. Jim is above all a teacher. His ability to bring complex ideas down to the level where a novice can comprehend is legendary. His method, rather unique in the world of underwater photography and videography, is not to show you great stuff and say "beat this", but to start with basic principles and work you through until you are automatically seeing the right solution to the situation before you. I would bet that any "name" underwater photographer if asked "where do I start?" would answer "pick up Jim Church's books and read them 3 or 4 times then get in the water.". This book, at less than the cost of 2 rolls of underwater film and developing, should be considered mandatory reading for anyone with a desire to take photographs (or video) underwater.
TIMELESS TEACHINGS.......2002-01-01
When I started in uderwater photography, I was told by a very wise and respected professional, "Composition cannot be taught ... it is not a concept or a method. The photographer is born with an eye for composition and it is an art." To which Jim Church's book has proven that statement to be "Hogwash, INDEED!" Composition may be a gift, but it is a gift that can be honed and trained, just as Jim Church has done with this book. He has given the reader all the tools, tricks and tips to develop that skill into an art. Liberally sprinkled with the Jim Church wit and humour, this book stands up to reading after reading after reading. This book stands alongside his "Guide to the Nikonos" and his "Underwater Video" books as "bibles" for the ardent underwater photographer. As for Jim Church's method of teaching and guidance, I can tell you that nine years ago I was using a disposable underwater camera. I have studied the books and travelled with Jim Church as often as possible and I am now a contributing editor and Photo Pro for an international dive magazine. So, if you ask me if Jim Church's methods work, I would resoundingly answer "YES." If you aks me if this is a book worth buying, I would answer resoundingly "YES!" No matter how many times you read this book and no matter what level of photographer you might be, there is always something new in this book that you can apply in your pursuit of great photos. These concepts of composition are NOT restricted to the ocean floor, either. The methods and concepts explained in this text --- in easy to understand terms --- also apply to land photography. This Essential Guide is exactly that---- ESSENTIAL! I regret that five stars is the highest rank offered for this book. The only thíng wrong with this book ---- it wasn't written sooner! I could have saved a lot of film on badly composed shots!!!!
"Something Here for Everyone".......2001-06-10
People come to photography by many strange and varied routes and my own is as different as the next - though I shall not bore you with that particular story here. Suffice to say that, my first photograph was published in 1974, my first underwater photograph in 1980 and, right at this time, my work has appeared (somewhere) every month since December 1998, I am in the process of completing my fourth book and my photography has even been purchased by National Geographic.
The relevance of all this, however, is that I am largely self-taught and that always leaves me wondering if I am missing some of those basic lessons that would have been explained on the very first day of any professionally run photography course. "Jim Church's Essential Guide to Composition" goes a long way to fill any gaps there might be.
This book has two outstanding qualities; Firstly, it is written by a man who really does know about every aspect of underwater photography. Secondly, and most important of all, however, Jim Church has the power to explain his knowledge in words we can all understand. In so doing he has produced a book for the professional underwater photographer and the amateur diver alike. If you have just bought your first camera and are about to embark on a very expensive trip to try it out, this is your in-flight reading material. Believe me, you will come home with better pictures - I did.
"Jim Church's Essential Guide to Composition" is a 9in x 6in paperback book containing 136 pages, 80 colour photographs and 8 line drawings. Each photograph and drawing serves a purpose and are used to explain each of the many lessons involved with composing underwater pictures and, basically, the difference between taking a good photograph and not. All of which is, of course, supported by the non-technical information imparted in an easy-to-understand style.
The book begins with absolute basics - and what could be more basic than explaining the function of the human eye and then adapting that information in order to provide a better understanding of the function of a camera lens. In short, this is a book about "stepping stones" and each time a relevant point has been explained and demonstrated, the book builds on this knowledge as we step forward onto another stone for even greater knowledge of the subject in hand.
In Summary, this is one of the few books I have ever read which achieves exactly and precisely what it sets out to achieve and is made all the more valuable because the Author is a man who knows his stuff and is able to explain things without getting bogged down in technical jargon.
Five Stars are not enough for this little gem.
NM
Another Good Effort from Jim Church.......2000-09-09
For all UW imaging systems users, this book is less about the technique (which can be found in Jim's books on Nikonos and Video systems), and more about the art of UW photography. Jim again uses the Situations approach, and helps you develop an eye for good pictures. Really useful stuff on working with models.

Not hands-on oriented, better suited for classroom........2005-09-29
I am a maintenance mechanic. This book reads like a dry classroom textbook. I specifically was looking for practical solutions for motor lubrication insight, such as how many pumps of grease per inch of motor shaft diameter, etc. Instead I only found the boring lubrication schedules and warnings about over lubricating. Also, we have dirty HVAC Heat Wheels and I wanted to know how to clean them. They are not even mentioned in the book! This book is of little use to me as a hands-on handbook. At a much lower price I would have given it 3 stars, but at this price it deserves only 2 stars.
Brief comments in the book!.......2000-07-12
Quickly what is to be said about that book is that it is mainly addressed to people with some experience in the field and not to newcomers. well structured deals in good detail with all aspects of organizing your HVAC systems operation and maintenace. Gives good guidelines for people that are not sure if they want to run the equipment themselfs or outsource the operation. It helped me a lot deciding to outsource the operation of our steam plant. I would generally recommend it as a good reference for the evereday problems that HVAC equipment runs into and for the organization of your maintenace of your equipment. It could though deal in greater depth with the aspects of HVAC equipment design and installation.

If you know the answer to that question, then you are already more competent than this book. Don't waste your time with this little girl's book.
Forced Hot Air Furnaces, Roger Vizi.......2007-01-18
Very disappointed. Very little information on later model heaters.
In the good old days, with ineffecient heaters and standing pilots, heaters tended to be trouble free. In 40 years I never had a heater problem until I started living with draft inducers and control modules. Now I continually have problems with these new heaters in the houses I own and those problem are related to draft inducer motors, sensors, hot surface igniter, electrical igniters, and solid state control boards. Hello!! This book contains essentially no information on most of these items and their application to gas fired forced air furnaces.
I have to wonder why anyone would write a book in 1999 and leave out the subject matter pertaining to the areas that cause the modern heaters to fail.
Sincerely,
vern
forced hot air furnaces.......2007-01-09
This book was for my husband. He found it very informative. Some of the furnace repairmen should read it!
This book is very insightful........2005-03-16
After being told by a so-called professional that my Furnace was basically shot and that it would take upwards of $550 to fix it or I could buy a new one for $700 ... I decided to do some research on my own. I found this book and it was a god send. It detailed exactly what was wrong with my furnace and hot-to fix it. I fixed my furnace for the price of the book and an $80 part.
This book helped me.......2004-02-25
I have read the other reviews here, and I guess it all depends on what you are looking in this book.
I own an older gas heating system with a standing pilot and I was having a problem keeping it lit. This book gave me all of the information I needed to fix the problem, and the ability to tune my heating system up so this doesn't happen again.
I read the book from cover to cover after reading what others have written, and I guess there could have been more written on some subjects, but if that were the case, the book would have had to be several hundred pages longer to cover every event that could happen.
I feel the author did an excellent job hitting the high spots on each type of heating system and I don't think the objective was to make a professional repair person out of the readers.
For my money, this is a great book.
