Book Description
It's the book version of HGTV meets ESPN: For the millions of men around the world who have ceded their bachelor pad décor to laundry rooms and playrooms, ManSpace provides inspiration for men to reclaim private spaces that offer more than big screen TVs and recliners.
ManSpace is a refreshing take on the spaces in and around the home that men claim as their own. The smoking room, the garage workshop, the basement pool room, the recording studio or the wine cellar are just a few examples of the spaces men carve out of their homes. Manspace will profile these spaces to offer inspiration and ideas to other men looking for a way to create personalized places dedicated to their work and play. ManSpace profiles around 50 different spaces from converted air streams trailers and attics to extra bedrooms and out buildings to entire houses dedicated to a man's possessions and activities.
Customer Reviews:
A call to action for men.......2007-06-04
ManSpace is a call to action for men: a call to build a 'personal space' outside of the usual woman-controlled home, where you can keep your stuff without fear of its being converted to a 'more useful' nursery or sewing room. MANSPACE: A PRIMAL GUIDE TO MARKING YOUR TERRITORY can be a recording studio, a workshop, or more. Men are invited to view sample houses and homes which reflect 'manspaces', from music rooms to campy man-oriented gadget-filled abodes. Samples from all types of 'manspaces' appear in full color and offer inspiration, insights and a range of options, making MANSPACE perfect for any general-interest lending collection.
Just what the Dr. ordered.......2007-04-05
An excellent book, long overdue. I highly recommend; you will enjoy.
Decorating Ideas for Men .......2007-04-04
This book makes a great gift for the man who has everything. Great ideas for men to carve out their own space in a home usually decorated by women.
good primer for thought!.......2007-02-01
A cool book to get ideas from. Fun to read. A lot of cats in the book obviously have much more disposable income than the average joe looking for a place to call their own but it has some cool ideas. Worth checking out!
ManSpace is a Winner.......2007-01-19
This book is filled with wonderful photographs of varios types of Man Spaces. It is well written and is easy reading. I purchased the book as a gift for my husband, but found it an appealing read for women, as well.
Book Description
A world-renowned design authority shows how to make the most of every square foot.
Whether motivated by soaring energy costs, smaller families or the desire to live more simply, homeowners are abandoning "McMansions" for smaller housing. In
How to Live in Small Spaces, Terence Conran explains that what's paramount to livability is not square footage, but how the space is divided.
In this comprehensive, full color book, Conran tackles the many challenges posed by small spaces. Chapters cover storage, bedrooms, children's rooms, lighting, extension and much more. "Assessing your needs" checklists and "points to consider" sidebars add valuable ideas. The six case studies that conclude the book provide excellent examples of great designs.
The author offers practical advice on exploiting every inch of space through:
- Using fold-down and pull-out features
- Buying slimline appliances
- Installing indoor portholes and windows
- Lessening the impact of furniture
- Using scale and proportion to advantage
- Manipulating color, texture and pattern
- Using screens, partitions and platforms
- Improving circulation paths.
Terence Conran never forgets the challenges posed by small spaces or the ingenuity and compromises required. He shows how easy it is to create a home whose comfort is not dependent on size, but on efficiency and integrity.
Customer Reviews:
How to live in small spaces.......2007-08-12
This book has some very valuable information on getting your life ready to live in a smaller more efficent space. It also shows some very good examples to inspire you.
Great Basic Color Education.......2007-04-04
Though I am not color blind, one would be hard to believe that when it comes to color choices I have made in the past. I knew nothing about color and how colors work with one another.
The first part of this book outlines basic color theory - the primary colors, secondary and tertiary colors and how they work together. The book then goes into how to use color to set different moods or support different themes - for example, what colors to use for an Asian or Mediterreanan look.
I learned a lot - and finally got it through my head that paint is not permanent - if you don't like it - paint it over. With this book in hand, I won't be afraid to try different color combos. This is a great book with lots of ideas!
Like the book.......2007-04-03
Well organized, liked the pictures and ideas. A little light on actual hard core information, but a nice intro to the ideas that are useful to consider when contemplating a small space remodel.
Book Description
Space, light and material: from the meditative ambiance of a chapel or synagogue to the colourful, organic forms of fashion boutiques, the design of an interior space - composed of lighting, the surfaces, textures and colours of materials, finishing and features - creates atmosphere and lends specific character. The growing willingness on the part of designers in recent years to experiment with colours, materials and spatial concepts is demonstrated in the range and diversity of international examples presented in this, the third volume in the series "In Detail". All plans and drawings of interiors and furnishings have been carefully researched and drawn by the staff of DETAIL. Three introductory essays by expert authors are followed by 28 exemplary case-studies by such names as Alvaro Siza, Future Systems, Dominique Perrault, and Herzog & de Meuron.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2007-10-12
Very informative and gives a clear precise description of varying types on renovation and adaptive reuse.
best volume in the best detail architecture books available.......2007-08-25
This book is part of a deliriously excellent series of Birkhauser's In
Detail collection, a series of books emphasizing and celebrating the importance of architectural details and the susbsequent spatial magic that emerges from the vigilant attention to design craft. I must say its excellence SHAMES the building culture of The united States of Kitsch. The level of American work in the field of architecture, by comparison, is stunted, nostalgic to the point of senility, and plastic garbage overseen by power broker idiot clients. Sadly, it's painfully, pathetically true, and these books prove it as a matter of course. Why are we (American) practitioners, builders, teachers, students, clients, laypeople, basically everyone really SO ill informed about design????
Don't we care?? Is there so much discord and disagreement?? It's puzzling.
Get these books and feast on the International wisdom; let's get half a clue.
great source.......2007-08-21
The book was exactly as I expected, high quality, detailed explanations in the Caliber of detail magazine. I will defiantly be purchasing the other books in this series.
Sometimes opaque, but great projects.......2007-01-05
I found the essays on simple construction to be variable in quality...The chapters on wood and steel either suffered in translation or were student composition exercises to begin with. The projects illustrated, however, are of uniformly high quality, and are documented with Detail's typical precision. For an American architect, many of the projects using wood construction will be eye openers. The stone and clay construction projects are wonderful for daydreaming about a different building culture in this country. Well worth it for the photos and drawings.
a very informative architectural detail review on residential.......2006-07-10
The book describes simple and neat residential building design in detail , shape, and material. The book should be applicable to architects or designers who aspire to work in modernism or minimalism on housing and who desire to improve the residential detil design to be more insighfully clean and blight. As well, the analysis from the publication could be developed to function in other architecture types.
Book Description
RockportÂ's Architecture in Detail series examines the role of details in contemporary architecture through the work of many emerging and established practitioners whose projects speak sensitively and energetically on a small scale.
In this edition, Spaces, acclaimed photographer Paul Warchol shows off these details in his lavish, full-color photographs, which makes turning these pages a pleasure for even the casual browser.
The projects are often beautiful telltales of a designerÂ's thoughts, scaled to our eyes, made physical to the touch of our hands. These crafted moments remind us that architecture can be a subtle and powerful force -- played out in some cases by evoking historical motifs, in others by radical experimentation. But more than a simple catalogue of ideas, this book ultimately shows these details as individual expressions of discovery, gestures of delight or severity, and of beauty and clarity. They are meaningful indications of the architectÂ's presence -- more than all else, willful signs that the true craft of design is alive and well.

Book Description
This book gives readers the full tour on mirror, from its origins over 6,000 years ago to today's uses in design. It also illustrates the remarkable ways in which mirror can be used to alter perspectives and change the way people react to a room. Color and black-and-white photographs demonstrate design achievements with mirror.
Customer Reviews:
Creative, Fascinating Use of the Mirror.......1999-12-06
To paraphrase 'Art Times', 'this is far more than an interior decorator's book, but a definitive analysis of the creative, and practical uses of the mirror.' 'Mirror By Design' won Honorable Mention for the Polsky Award from the American Society of Interior Designers.
Ms. Heyne, an architect herself, shows how architects and designers use mirrors to dematerialize heavy, bulky design elements, such as mirroring supporting columns; to create illusions, such as installing an 'infinity chamber' in a low restaurant ceiling to provide the feeling of height; or even to create views where there are none, such as through Ms. Heyne's own 'periscope window', which reflects a view from ground level into a basement area.
Experiments in underground space, in light tubes which can provide sunlight in lower story rooms, and numerous other fascinating products, make this a wonderful resource for the architect or designer.
Book Description

Is your household a whirlwind of action, desperately in need of a quiet refuge? Or do you long for a lively room where all the family can play? Page by page, Mee offers easy-to-follow advice on how to determine the purpose of the room, select an appropriate style, and provide a heaping dose of decorative detail--from canvases to carvings--at every turn.
Customer Reviews:
Fresh innovative design.......2007-04-18
Living spaces are literally the heartbeat of our home - where we meet, entertain, and relax and unwind. It is where we spend the majority of our time, at home. Therefore, it is only natural that we aspire the design of these rooms to work along with, and complement, the purpose and function of these beloved areas of our dwellings.
In Design Is In The Details: Living Spaces, renowned HGTV interior designer Brad Mee offers unique and inspiring tips for decorating these "living spaces" with professional finesse. Whether it is a living room, a great room, an entertainment room, or a special space such as a library or drawing room -- these living spaces are given new life with Mee's innovative steps to attaining a beautiful and livable space. Spanning from the subtle to the bold, he demonstrates how attainable attractive designs can be, no matter what the budget, resources, or floor plan, and provides ample tips for making your designs easier.
It all starts with the crucial initial assessment. Mee encourages analyzing the potential of the space you have to work with. The next step is to then outline and identify any special eye-catching feature in the room that you would like to enhance and, on the other end of the spectrum, note problematic characteristics you wish to conceal in that space. After listing the said characteristics, it is then suggested to prioritize the room's advantages and disadvantages. What do you have to work with? What `feeling' or ambiance is desired for the finished product? Does the room require any special needs, layout wise?
While claiming to meld style with a hospitable family-oriented space, many readers may find the design layouts featured in the photographs do not lend an overly practical feel to them. Most room designs are targeted to those who lean more towards the contemporary-modern look, and perhaps those who prefer more traditional colonial designs may lose interest in his more modernistic approach. However, even the most traditional of decorators will be able to garner helpful ideas from Mee's wealth of interior designing experience -- especially when it comes to the unique techniques of making optimum use of space and shape, and how it relates to the interplay of lighting, color, texture, and fabric in the overall design.
Design Is In The Details: Living Spaces is a comprehensive guide containing innovative ideas and eye-catching design for an exclusive and multi-functional space for all to enjoy. Mee's demonstrates how attaining a signature look is truly all in the details that make up a collective workable design.

Book Description
Yoshinobu Ashihara, one of Japan's most celebrated architects, develops in this book a cross-cultural perspective on how people actually see and feel urban spaces. His study spans East and West, ranges from traditional villages of Japan; the Italian Apulia, and the Aegean to New York, Chandigarh, and Brasilia.
Many of Ashihara's insights grow out of his reconciliation of positive-negative, yin-yang polarities. For example, he considers the demarcations between interior and exterior, private and public spaces in both Japanese and Western architecture and town planning, and the reversal of "figure" and "ground" in Italian piazzas. He also explores the differences between daytime and nighttime scenes, convex and concave shorelines, and the intimate, contained urban spaces associated with Medieval towns (and the outlook of Camillo Sitte) as distinguished from the grand, expansive spaces associated with Baroque cities (and the outlook of Le Corbusier).
As might be expected from a writer whose architectural designs are as much concerned with the intimate details as with the broad strokes, Ashihara's theoretical considerations are rooted in actualities that foster practical applications. He introduces an objective measure of various kinds of urban spaces by calculating the ratio of street width and building height, and takes into account the influence of such realities as climate, culture, history, and childhood memories on the shaping of human habitats.
The book is extensively illustrated with photographs of the sites discussed - street vistas, urban night scenes, squares, residential neighborhoods, landmark structures - and with maps, plans, and diagrams.
Yoshinobu Ashihara holds the chair of architecture at the University of Tokyo. He continues his teaching on a part-time basis and his designing and building on a full-time basis.
