5 out of 5 stars Very cute book!.......2007-09-17

This is a very cute book! I'm 8 months pregnant and my husband has been reading this book to my belly for the past few months. The baby already loves it but i'm sure she'll love it even more when she can hold daddy's hands with her own 10 little fingers!

5 out of 5 stars Loves It.......2007-08-27

My little absolutely loves these books. I have to read one or more of the everyday.

Ten Little Fingers by Annie Kubler is one of a series of books that is a perfect fit for very little ones. The rhythm and rhyme draws their attention and the illustrations are big blobs of color, sharply delineated from each other. You can start with an infant who is old enough to focus and they will be enthralled by the colors. The size of the book is good for holding open with one hand as you hold the baby in the other arm.

2 out of 5 stars couold be better.......2007-06-01

This is a finger play for babies and toddlers. I bought it to have at home for when my granddaughters visit. The book is cute enough, but there is just not "enough" meat to this book to justify a whole book for one finger play. I do like that the musical notes are provided, so that I can play the song on the piano. Just wish there were a couple other songs/finger plays.

3 out of 5 stars Ten Little Fingers.......2007-05-14

The shipping fee is about same as the book price itself. That will end up about double price of a children book.

This is a cute book, but my 10 month old daughter isn't that crazy about it. She has other books she likes much more.

5 out of 5 stars Love Love Love!.......2007-08-09

I purchased this book for my son when he was 15 months old and he loves this book. He brings it to me to read to him over and over again. The illustrations are fun, he loves the song, and he knows all the body parts now. Many times I have seen him flipping through the book on his own "studying" the pictures. Given I don't usually pay to buy new books that cost more than a dollar or two, this one was definately worth it!

1 out of 5 stars Buy "Where's My Belly Button" instead.......2007-06-13

This is merely a verbatim book version of the old playschool song "head and shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes . . " It could be made a bit more worthwhile if the art was engaging or dynamic in some way, but it's blah (think Precious Moments meets Charlie Brown) and does little to enhance a young childs perception of where to find his/her head, shoulders, knees . . well you get to idea.

5 out of 5 stars 2 for 1.......2007-08-12

You have two great contemporary artists combined in this book.....I plan to buy it again as I gave it to a friend who is a new grandmother.

5 out of 5 stars Life Doesn't Frighten Me .......2007-05-21

This is a great book! This book is a good starting point for conversation with children in helping them talk about what might frighten them. The artists (both Maya Angelou and Jean-Michel Basquiat) both have created a unique book for all ages.

2 out of 5 stars Undecided.......2007-04-22

The pictures are abstract looking and dark in tone. The book makes reference to; ghosts, bad men fighting in the dark, and cougars in the park. I'm not sure my 3 or 5 year old children had thought up these bad things on their own yet. While reading them the book I felt uneasy about the dark pictures and scary references to things they may not have even thought of before. I'm still undecided if it will be helpful in convincing them that they don't need to be afraid of life or if it will convince them that life is pretty scary and they ought to be afraid! There is one reference to 'having a lucky charm up her sleeve' that protects her from the bad stuff and also allows her to walk on the ocean floor without having to come up to breathe. Those are both useless defenses in the real world so the book doesn't offer any real reasons to not be scared of life.

5 out of 5 stars Art Appreciation For All Ages---.......2006-11-19

This book is truly for both parents and children. The cadence of Angelou's poem is one that appeals to kids of all ages, even if they don't initially understand it's meaning. The artwork in it's 'stick figure form' can be appreciated by all who enjoy the complexity of Basquiat's work as well as children relating to it's color and elementary presentation. It's one of my favorite gifts, from baby showers to adult parents. If you appreciate art and culture this book is one to have in the home as well as gift to a friend.

1 out of 5 stars Pure Bosh.......2006-07-13

What a deep, deep woman this Maya Angelou is. At least this book ADMITS it's for little kids, unlike a lot of her other work.

Believe it or not, 44 complete read-aloud classics and future classics--from Goodnight Moon to Stellaluna--are packed in this remarkably svelte, positively historic anthology. Flipping through the 308 pages of The 20th-Century Children's Book Treasury is like browsing a photo album of beloved friends and family. The familiar faces of Curious George and Ferdinand the Bull peer earnestly from the pages, and scenes from Madeline and Millions of Cats resonate as if you just experienced them yesterday. Think of the advantages of carrying this book on a vacation instead of a suitcase of single titles! (Your kids can always revisit their dog-eared hardcovers when they get home.)

This impressive collection of concept books, wordless books, picture books, and read-aloud stories was artfully compiled by longtime children's book editor and publisher Janet Schulman. Stories are coded red, blue, and green to designate age groupings from baby/toddler books such as Whose Mouse Are You?, through preschool books such as Where the Wild Things Are, to longer stories for ages 5 and older such as Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. The reason the book isn't bigger than Babar is because many of the illustrations from each story were reduced or removed to fit the anthology's format. (Leo Lionni's Swimmy, for example, takes up 5 pages total, compared to its original 29 pages.) Brief biographical notes that are surprisingly quirky shine a little light on the 62 authors and illustrators, and an index helps, too, for the child who likes one story best. We love the idea of being within easy reach of a Star-Belly Sneetch, a William Steig donkey, and a Sendak monster at all times, and we're sure your little bookworms will, too. Book Description

In the eight years since this blockbuster anthology of 44 classic picture books of the 20th century was compiled, important new picture books have been published that Janet Schulman believes are too good to miss. She has selected 15–some by brand-new voices of the 21st century, some by young authors and illustrators who were just getting started during the last decade of the past century, and a few by familiar names, such as Kevin Henkes with his 2005 Caldecott Medal Winner. This recommended list with descriptive annotations is intended to guide parents to these new books and new voices of the 21st century.

Unparalleled in scope and quality and designed for reading aloud and sharing, this splendid anthology brings together some of the most memorable and beloved children's books of our time. Here are classics such as Madeline and Curious George; contemporary bestsellers such as Guess How Much I Love You and The Stinky Cheese Man; Caldecott Medal winners such as Make Way for Ducklings and Where the Wild Things Are; and family favorites such as Goodnight Moon, The Sneetches, and Winnie-the-Pooh. The selections range from concept books and wordless books to picture books and short read-aloud stories, and represent the complete array of childhood themes and reading needs: ABCs, number and color books, stories about going to bed and going to school; tales about growing up, siblings, parents, and grandparents; animal stories, fantasies; fables; magical stories; stories about everyday life--and more. Also included are an introduction, capsule biographies of the 62 writers and artists represented in the collection, color-coded running heads indicating age levels, and indexes. As a gift, a keepsake, and a companion in a child's first steps toward a lifelong love of reading, The 20th Century Children's Book Treasury belongs in every family's bookcase.

5 out of 5 stars Chock full of great, classic & contemporary stories..........2007-08-04

We love this book! My daughter (4) and I read from it every night and through this book we have been exposed to stories we probably otherwise would never have read. She has her 'favorites' - which change about every week or so - and tho there are a few which are now too 'young' for her - there are plenty of others that are just right and plenty still to 'grow' into. The illustrations are just what you find in the original books. I don't know why people would not like this book - it's like having 100 books in one - great for a bedside table or travel or grandmas or anything that involves reading with your child. It's a no-brainer and there are no negatives. I wish they would do more collections like this.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for your library........2007-07-04

This is great for young children. It contains books for three levels - Toddler, Preschooler; and Kindergartener (and up). The following lists all the books in this treasury (not in order).

Toddler books: Goodnight Moon; Freight Train; I Hear, I See, I Touch (Oxenbury); Titch; Good Night, Gorilla; Ten, Nine, Eight (Bang); I Am Bunny; Whose Mouse Are You?

Preschooler books: Madeline; Chicka Chicka Boom Boom; Swimmy; The Snowy Day; Make Way for Ducklings; A Boy, a Dog and a Frog; Millions of Cats; Guess How Much I Love You; Curious George; Where the Wild Things Are; The Tub People; The Story of Babar; The Berenstaian Bears and the Spooky Old Tree; Stellaluna; D.W. the Picky Eater; First Tomato; Harry the Dirty Dog; Owen; The Story of Little Babaji

Kindergartener books: A Chair for My Mother; The Letter (from Frog and Toad Are Friends); A Million Fish...More or Less; Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day; Miss Nelson Is Missing!; The Cat Club; Sylvester and the Magic Pebble; Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel; Stevie; In Which Pooh Goes Visiting and Gets into a Tight Place (from Winnie-the-Pooh); Bedtime for Frances; The Stinky Cheese Man (from The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales); The Elves in the Shelves (from A Necklace of Raindrops); Petunia; Amelia Bedelia; The Story of Ferdinand; The Sneetches (from The Sneetches and Other Stories)

I don't think this will work for toddlers. I feel that toddlers need to actually touch, flip, and chew(!) the pages. Luckily, I have most of the toddler books and my boys (3 and 5) grew up with the books in this treasury. They were happy to see their old favorites. They love to pick stories from the book each night before they go to bed.

Also, rather than having this one book in my library, I am using this as a guide for other books for my kids (such as getting others books by the authors from this book).

Someone complained that the pictures from several pages were laid out in one big page. You have to remember this is a treasury/anthology of many great books. This is an excellent compilation of children's books from 20th century.

5 out of 5 stars Great value .......2007-06-18

This is definitely a favorite at our house. This book has many of the most popular children's books under one cover. Except for a few examples, all of the text of the stories has been reprinted, albeit more of it per page than in the originals. You will miss some of the illustrations that are in the original books, but there are enough illustrations included to keep the attention of children and give a flavor of the original.

We probably would never buy all of these books on their own; having them in one volume is both convenient and economical. If we find that we love a particular story, it usually inspires us to get the book from the library to see what (if anything) was missing. We also check out other books from favorite authors. So, think of this as a great starting point for developing a library for your children.

5 out of 5 stars Best anthology of children's literature.......2007-05-13

This is my favorite baby gift. I buy it for everyone because it is the most complete anthology of the best of children's literature. There is nothing more important than reading and this book can be read to babies and enjoyed again by children as they grow and read to themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Must Own!.......2007-04-22

This is a wonderful book! Your children will love it and you will love reading it to them. The stories are fun, captivating and bring the joy of your childs imagination! They will ask you to read more...that is a guarantee! Every parent should own this....it will even bring back some of your own childhood memories of reading.

Book Description

How many times can you jump rope? This rhyme makes the game of rope jumping even more fun. It's a counting rhyme, and there are lots of others like it. There are also red-hot pepper rhymes for jumping very fast, and rhymes for jumping in and out of the rope. There are even fortune-telling rhymes that answer questions and help you predict the future!

The rhymes in this book began as a way to keep the rhythm while jumping rope, but they also lent poetry and humor to the game. Here are over one hundred traditional rhymes that will make rope jumping challenging and, best of all, fun.

2 out of 5 stars Dissappointed with content.......2007-10-12

Maybe I'm too persnickety, but I was so dissappointed by the content of the songs. I'd hoped for some cute childhood rhymes, but instead found a bunch of rubbish, to put it nicely.

1 out of 5 stars not quite what I expected.......2007-05-14

The advertising copy suggests that this is a set of jump rope rhymes set at a pace that is appropriate for jumproping. But they aren't rhymes, they are songs, and they don't all have a strong beat, so they aren't ideal for jumproping to. It is a plenty-fun set of songs for kids, but the advertising is misleading.

1 out of 5 stars bad rating for the book not the seller!!!.......2007-03-08

The book came as described in excellent shape and arrived quickly.
I hate the book though. The rhymes are not very good. Just a few variations of words but nothing to really jump rump for a long period of time to. I was hoping for some of the playground rhymes I can't remember from childhood. It seemed like somebody just wrote down some words that sorta rhymed but had no reason.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book!.......2007-02-13

My daughter enjoyed this book.I do wish it had some color in its illustrations.Fast shipping!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great fun.......2000-06-11

For anyone who jumped rope a great deal (this excludes me) or swung the rope while others jumped (this includes me), this book is sure to have some favorite rhymes. As such, it is an interesting way to initiate cross-generational discussions - jump-rope rhymes are school yard folklore with astounding staying power. The book is also useful as a way to encourage young "couch potatoes" to get a bit of time outside with requiring outside to be a large space.

Of course, the best way to use the book is simply to enjoy it.

Book Description

Emboldened by the enthusiastic response to Belly Button (Round)—a song from her Grammy-nominated book/CD, Philadelphia Chickens—Sandra Boynton further contemplates this mesmerizing subject.

Featuring a beachful of bare-bellied hippos—including one tiny baby who can only say “Bee Bo”—the Belly Button Book is the latest quirky addition to the phenomenally successful Boynton on Board series. Every page captivates with Sandra Boynton’s inimitable illustrations and joyful rhyming text:

Soon after dark, upon the beach, we sing a hippo song, and if you’re feeling in the mood, we hope you’ll sing along: “Belly Belly Button, you’re oh so fine. Ooo, Belly Button, I’m so happy you’re mine.”

Shiny and sturdy, and featuring a great (navel-shaped, naturally) die-cut cover that offers a provocative glimpse of the merriment inside, the Belly Button Book provides enduring, giggly, read-aloud fun.

5 out of 5 stars Great books!.......2007-09-24

Sandra Boyton books are always a big hit at our house-she writes some terrific children's books that all kids seem to love!

5 out of 5 stars Super Fun.......2007-09-01

I bought this book for my husband to read to our 7 month old daughter because he gets so bored with traditional children's books. We also own other Boynton books and we have all of them memorized. I think it is important to teach children that reading is fun. If you have fun reading it, they will catch on.

5 out of 5 stars great baby book.......2007-06-27

one of my one yr. old grandson's favorite books! what better review than that?

3 out of 5 stars Cute but not great.......2007-05-21

I really enjoy several of Sandra Boynton's books. I and my daughter love Pajama Time, Snuggle Puppy, and Barnyard Dance. We like a few others like this one. My only complaint for this book is that it shows imodesty. I want my children to dress modestly and though these are hippos who really don't wear any clothes. Children, especially young ones don't recognize that.

5 out of 5 stars oh so fun for all babes.......2007-05-19

I sent this to my grand daughter who was not even one yet, and little wee ones love rhyme and goofy phrases and with the colorful pics, it was a huge hit as were the others I sent by Sandray Boynton, what a delight and such fun to share the joy and laughter of a babe

4 out of 5 stars So Cute!.......2007-09-13

Gorgeous illustrations. Witty little fashionista takes on traditional nursery rhymes. Too short and not something i'd recommend to be read to children, but gorgeous for the fashion lover at heart.

5 out of 5 stars Glorious!.......2007-07-26

I received this book as a gift when my third child was born.

It is spectacular and wonderfully witty. My personal belief is that the reviews that cite it as mediocre and such are missing the point - this is a book that is fun for mom *and* fun for the kiddies.

You won't find duckies and bunnies here - but you will find a wonderful play on nursery classics that appeals to the fashion-loving mom and her hip kiddos.

And yes, the author is British. Therefore some of the references are British - makes perfect sense to me. That added a welcome level of complexity to the discussion with my 4 year old about how certain words in the same language might be used differently in different places.

I love this book - and I know many adults sans kiddos who would love it as well.

5 out of 5 stars Prada Pigglies!.......2007-06-28

Such a cute book! The Mommy-to-Be is such a diva and loved it! Absolutely fabulous!

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2007-05-14

I thought it would be cute to have around b/c its a different take on classic nursery rhymes. I also thought the book would be more suitabe for children for some reason...but it was a bit materialistic for my tastes and not what I want my child focused on.

4 out of 5 stars great funny.......2007-04-04

easy to read, kids love it and have a good laugh at what they do understand.beautiful keepsake.

5 out of 5 stars Cute book! .......2007-09-11

My 16 month old twins LOVE this book!! It's definitly their favorite. They have the whole thing memorized and love to sing it even without the book! They also have "ten little fingers" and it's great too.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2007-03-08

My 15 month old daughter loved the song "Row,Row,Row Your Boat" and so I thought I would get a book with the same title. I was delightfully surprised at the creative additional verses. It is now my daughters' favorite book!!

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-02-07

Excellent book for toddlers. My 13 month old daughter loves to read this book. The illustrations are fun and nicely done. It is a classic and a great addition to her collection of books.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely a favorite.......2007-01-19

As much as I did not like the extra made up verses in "If you're Happy", I love the extra verses in this book. My daughter's favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Can't read this one often enough.......2007-01-15

My grandson (19 months) absolutely crows when he sees this one in Grammy's bag of books when I visit! He immediately brings it to me, plops himself into my lab and demands, "Row row!" This has been going on for at least 3 or 4 months and he shows no indication of becoming tired of it. Annie Kubler has really identified what babies love!

Product Description

Find 15 of the best-loved verses and pictures from the original Mother Goose in this beautiful board book. Your young child will be delighted to hear these familiar rhymes for the first time and many times thereafter. A great edition for your home library

Amazon.com

Seven beloved verses from Old Mother Goose are imbued with a little more "feeling" with this interactive version of the classic. Young children can stroke the white horse's silky mane in "Banbury Cross," feel the dog's smooth red satin suit in "The Cat and the Fiddle," and dig their tiny fingers into the soft wool of the sheep in "Mary Had a Little Lamb." There's even a scratch-and-sniff spice cake in "Pat-a-Cake"! Tots will love this introduction to the nursery rhymes that will carry them through childhood and beyond. Old-fashioned, Edwardian-style illustrations will please readers of all ages, and the simple two-page-spread format, with poems on the left and pictures on the right, is clean and attractive. The miniature board book is just the right size and sturdiness for small hands and new teeth. (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter

4 out of 5 stars My 3-year-old loves it........2007-09-12

My 3-year-old daughter loves this book. Some of the rhymes are the ones that don't make much sense but who cares if she likes it?!

5 out of 5 stars wonderful book.......2007-07-27

This is a wonderful book. It has been one of our favorites for years now.

5 out of 5 stars A classic!!!.......2007-03-09

I read this book to my children 30 years ago and purchased it for my new grandson. This book is one of the best nursery rhyme books you can find. My girls and I love this book.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Mother Goose.......2007-02-07

The book is beautifully written and illustrated. The rymes are the old ones that I remember as a child. I bought the book for my new granddaughter and she, even as a newborn, will listen as her mother reads to her. The illustrations are of the old type and go so well with the text. This is a book she will grow with.

4 out of 5 stars Mother Goose: A Fragmented Tale.......2007-01-12

Hardly is one character or situation introduced until the author skips to another. Even given the brief attention span of a reader of modern fiction, the lack of continuity, excessive use of jump-cuts, and economy of presentation leave the reader searching in vain for the central theme. Still, the basic rawness of its poetic passages has a visceral attraction and a primitive strength. I anxiously await its rendering in the media of film, to see how the director will tie together the diverse range of metaphorical, even alegorical, passages into a cohesive whole.

Book Description

Jack Spratt and Mary Mary return in their second adventure from the inimitable Jasper Fforde

Five years ago, Viking introduced Jasper Fforde and his upsidedown, inside-out literary crime masterpieces. And as they move from Thursday Next to Jack SprattÂ's Nursery Crimes, his audience is insatiable and growing. Now, with The Fourth Bear, Jack Spratt and Mary Mary take on their most dangerous case so far as a murderous cookie stalks the streets of Reading.

The Gingerbreadman—psychopath, sadist, genius, and killer—is on the loose. But it isnÂ't Jack SprattÂ's case. He and Mary Mary have been demoted to Missing Persons following JackÂ's poor judgment involving the poisoning of Mr. Bun the baker. Missing Persons looks like a boring assignment until a chance encounter leads them into the hunt for missing journalist Henrietta “Goldy” Hatchett, star reporter for The Daily Mole. Last to see her alive? The Three Bears, comfortably living out a life of rural solitude in AndersenÂ's wood.

But all is not what it seems. How could the bearsÂ' porridge be at such disparate temperatures when they were poured at the same time? Why did Mr. and Mrs. Bear sleep in separate beds? Was there a fourth bear? And if there was, who was he, and why did he try to disguise GoldyÂ's death as a freak accident?

Jack answers all these questions and a few others besides, rescues Mary Mary from almost certain death, and finally meets the Fourth Bear and the Gingerbreadman face-to-face.

4 out of 5 stars screwed up a few bed time stories.......2007-10-01

so, nursery rhymes used to be something that mommy used to read to me, and once i learned to read, i'd read on my own. and they always seemed so inocent, but then i learned what "ring around the rosies" really meant.

this book takes it a step further. now, mamma bear is cheating on pappa bear, goldylocks dies a horrible death, and mary mary, quite contrary, is a police detective.

it's a fun book. puts an odd spin on the childhood memories.

5 out of 5 stars What really happened to Goldilocks?.......2007-09-02

Fforde continues his Nursery Crime series with an investigation into the fate of Goldilocks. A great take-off on a great nursery tale. Along the way, Detective Inspector Jack Spratt struggles with his identity, and he and Detective Sergeant Mary Mary both learn a lot about their relationships. The book contains plenty of literary allusions, humor, and mystery, and just the right amount of "depth."

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-08-23

This was a terrifically funny book. Jasper Fforde outdid himself with this one. This was much funnier than his first Nursery Crimes book. I highly recommend this for anyone who has read his other books.

4 out of 5 stars Almost perfect.......2007-05-21

If you have ever thought to yourself that "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" seemed incomplete, here's a book that will satisfy you. Fforde's writing, funny and sharp as usual, is a star on its own. While not exactly his Thursday Next series, this should appeal to the same set of readers. The plot of this book is not quite as meandering as it predecessor, The Big Over Easy, and is much more satisfying at the end. I would reccomend this to anyone with an appreciation of literature and a sense of humor (if you lack one, don't read this).

5 out of 5 stars makes me laugh out loud.......2007-05-13

I loved it! I know if I listened again I would catch more of the jokes.
