Book Description
In The Archive and the Repertoire preeminent performance studies scholar Diana Taylor provides a new understanding of the vital role of performance in the Americas. From plays to official events to grassroots protests, performance, she argues, must be taken seriously as a means of storing and transmitting knowledge. Taylor reveals how the repertoire of embodied memoryâconveyed in gestures, the spoken word, movement, dance, song, and other performancesâoffers alternative perspectives to those derived from the written archive and is particularly useful to a reconsideration of historical processes of transnational contact. The Archive and the Repertoire invites a remapping of the Americas based on traditions of embodied practice.
Examining various genres of performance including demonstrations by the children of the disappeared in Argentina, the Peruvian theatre group Yuyachkani, and televised astrological readings by Univision personality Walter Mercado, Taylor explores how the archive and the repertoire work together to make political claims, transmit traumatic memory, and forge a new sense of cultural identity. Through her consideration of performances such as Coco Fusco and Guillermo Gómez-Peña’s show Two Undiscovered Amerindians Visit . . . , Taylor illuminates how scenarios of discovery and conquest haunt the Americas, trapping even those who attempt to dismantle them. Meditating on events like those of September 11, 2001 and media representations of them, she examines both the crucial role of performance in contemporary culture and her own role as witness to and participant in hemispheric dramas. The Archive and the Repertoire is a compelling demonstration of the many ways that the study of performance enables a deeper understanding of the past and present, of ourselves and others.

A Vital Intervention.......2006-02-15
Taylor's "The Archive and the Repertoire" is an absolute must-read for all scholars and students in performance studies, cultural studies, Latin American studies, and the social sciences in general.
Drawing on a diverse range of case studies from a Peruvian community theatre troupe to Univision astrologist Walter Mercado to her own firsthand account of witnessing 9/11, Taylor creates a new vocabulary for describing how cultures remember and re-enact with the body.
Although her insights are crucial for the future of performance studies and useful to senior scholars in the field, she writes with a clarity and personality that will engage undergraduate students as well.
VERY highly recommended.
Read This Important New Book.......2003-12-16
In her wonderful new book, Diana Taylor, a distinguished professor of both Spanish and performance studies, brings her areas of expertise into "conversation." Performances, she argues, are vital "acts of transfer" that transmit social knowledge, memory and a sense of identity in Latin/o American (and by extension other) cultures.
She writes, "I am not suggesting that we merely extend our analytic practice to other `Non-Western' areas. Rather, what I propose here is a real engagement between two fields that helps us rethink both." By working from the points of disconnection between area and performance studies Taylor creates a new framework for approaching performance as embodied social practice.
Shifting focus to "the live" requires new methodologies and Taylor creates exciting new theoretical tools to further this discussion. Since, in her view, much performance writing betrays the "embodiedness" it seeks to describe; Taylor coins terms that do not derive from literary sources. The repertoire of her title is her term for a "non-archival system of transfer" that can capture the ephemeral trace of performance. By providing her reader with a kind of archive of affect, Taylor makes the body central. She argues that the repertoire "allows for an alternative perspective on historical processes...by following traditions of embodied practice" instead of literary rhetoric. As an alternative to "narrative" she offers scenario, a term with a theatrical genealogy, meaning an open-ended " sketch or outline" as a way to connote colonial encounters. For example, Taylor wittily names the scenario in which we are encouraged to "overlook the displacement and disappearance of native peoples" at the root of the popular show Survivor, "Fantasy Island." Taylor expands on this theme in her second chapter, Scenarios of Discovery: Reflections on Performance and Ethnography. She writes, "Using scenario as a paradigm for understanding social structures and behaviors might allow us to draw from the repertoire as well as the archive."
Using these terms as "portable frameworks" and moving in and out of first person experience, Taylor explores a range of hemispheric performances. Chapters on the Mexican mestizaje, campy Latino American psychic Walter Mercado, and the ways that minority populations mourned Princess Diana, explore the hybrid spaces between perception and embodied culture. Taylor revisits the Argentinean "Dirty War"
(the topic of her book Disappearing Acts) in her chapter on H.I.J.O.S. -the children of the disappeared- and the "DNA of performance" that links them with their absent parents. Chapters on Brazilian performance artist Denise Stoklos, witnessing 9/11 and a 1998 Central Park performance of Rumba musicians interrupted by the NYPD, investigate the complex relations between hegemonic power and the anarchic spirit of live performance against a background of historic violence.
This book is a path-making piece of scholarship that recognizes performance as a valid focus of analysis. It creates a dialogue between area and performance studies that values the unique features of both. The questions Diana Taylor asks in Archive and the Repertoire extend beyond this work and will shape a terrain of inquiry in performance studies for years to come.

The French diction 'bible' Singing in French!.......2003-11-16
The book Singing in French has been my close friend for many years. In fact, I have just bought a new one since my first one fell apart from constant use! The information presented here is first-class with no detail left unattended. It remains (since 1979) THE major book on French diction for classical singers. Thomas Grubb explains everything in detail so clearly. He knows from experience what a singer's reaction will be and he is able to address that at the outset.Thomas Grubb is not only an expert on French diction, but also a wonderful pianist, vocal coach and an impeccable artist. This book is a must read! Grubb includes detailed repertoire for each category of voice. To singers, this is simply a French diction bible!

Book Description
The Caro-Kann is a reliable yet at the same time dynamic answer to White’s most popular opening move, 1 e4. It has the seal of approval of numerous leading Grandmasters including Vishy Anand, Evgeny Bareev and Alexey Dreev, as well as former World Champion Anatoly Karpov, who has utilized it with great success throughout his illustrious career. One of the attractions of the Caro-Kann is that it suits a variety of different styles; it can lead to wild tactical battles as well as quiet, positional play.
In Play the Caro-Kann, Jovanka Houska presents the reader with a concise and trustworthy repertoire within the opening, providing a solution against all of White’s main possibilities. Houska examines the important tactical and strategic plans for both sides, arming the reader with enough information to begin playing the Caro-Kann with confidence in his or her own games.
*A complete repertoire against 1 e4
*Written by a Caro-Kann expert
*Ideal for improvers, and club and tournament players

Fantastic Writer!.......2007-10-11
Jovanka is a superb writer. I fell in love with the Caro while reading her book. She describes the system with such detail, from the complex to the simple. This is by far one of my favorite chess books in my library of chess books (50+). I look forward to anything else she writes. Maybe something on 1.e4 - d5 would be great.
As for the book... its money well spent. She provides such analysis for the Bf5 variation. 70+ pages alone. Neil McDonalds Caro Main line provided approximatly 50 and as the title goes it was only based around the main lines. Houska Provides her reader with what seems to be all possible continuations (Of course, not all continuations but really close!!!) And when continuations are interlinked she explains the reasons behind relevent positions.
And, frankly, it makes me feel good to see that not only did she recommend these lines in this book, but she also practices them over the board!
Spectacular!!!!
A workable repertoire against 1.e4.......2007-07-09
Houskas aim with this work is to give solid and active lines against the major white alternatives. Not all of his reccomendations will be to everyones liking. For instance he reccomends the Botvinnik-Karls Gambit against the Advanced Variation (1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 c5!?) where Black loses a tempo, but insists that White will have to work hard to achieve a playable game. His other reccomendations (classical,pannov-attack,exchange) are more "mainstream" but will offer ways to deviate and steer the game into lesser-known channels within the variation.
Each chapter is setup very nicely with a discussion of general ideas (ie: aims at which both sides would like to accomplish and the moves that will support each of these aims and moves that might nullify them). He also will bring up any sacrifices that both sides should be aware of in certain variations. Then he will dive into theory and will take time to explain the rationale behind key moves.
Overall, the book is a fine resource on the Caro-Kann. If one is looking for a playable repertoire all in one volume, you can find it right here. But this book is equally useful for players that have certain preference on variations "within" the Caro-Kann, and are looking for original ways to reply to a line that might be causing trouble in over-the-board play.
Excellent book .......2007-05-10
Great Caro-Kann book....followed the author's games in the recent European Cup in Dresden 2007.....Explains why he likes/dislikes certain moves is the diff variations...

Benchmark Repetoire Book.......2007-01-10
This is a repetoire book, not a games collection, not a treatise. From a repetoire book I want to know what to play in each situation and what kind themes arize when I do. And this one does just that: it is an excellent repetoire book. Mine is already tattered. I use this book a LOT. I buy other books to complement this one.
What makes it good is the presentation: lots of diagrams, good summaries, good "quick review" pages. Each chapter has its own outline of variation with page numbers to lines. These are slightly abbreviated and are awesome for quick reference and self-testing.
When you evaluate the choice of lines, you'll always find a few places you disagree. Since this is somewhat inevitable, I don't think it's fair. A repetoire author MUST advocate something and making choices means some people feel their pet line is excluded. You buy this kind of book because you WANT this. These authors deliver.
And mostly, they have a consistent criteria for why they chose the lines they did. They want to prepare you comprehensively, so you have a something to play against anything that's thrown at you. This means covering the anti-sicilians and all the d4 deviations. They do. They also insist that the lines be technically sound. Mostly they succeed, but I'm a little suspect on their response to the Alapin. They also, generally, want lines that lead to middlegames with clear themes, and best of all, these themes are often similar across divergent openings. There's lots of cross polination here. Finally, the usually want openings with compact theory, which is good for club players.
There are a few flaws relative to the above criteria, but in a work this ambitious, it's inevitable. I thought the Nimzo as the main defense to d4 is reasonable, but it's breaks their "compact" rule since there are nine (!) different plans for white on move four. And as I said, the way they respond to the Alapin, delayed Alapin, or Smith-Morra leaves me a little uneasy. There also some dumb chapters on the history of e4 and the history of closed openings. Useless filler. The chapter on illustrative games has 13 games. Why bother? It's clear you need to supplement this book with games based opening books, so don't give me a token gesture, admit it and recommend some books.
Overall, quite an impressive undertaking. This is surely the benchmark to compare repetoire books against. I'd be very happy to see copy-cats adopting the basic format and presentation, but putting their own spin on what they advocate.
Openings for White is better........2006-09-17
I bought both this and the repertoire for white book, which I reviewed with 4 stars. This one I feel a bit sceptical about. Basically I have found i don't really like playing the Bogo or Nimzo Indian, which is a big chunk of the book, since it is the response to all d4 openings. The positions resulting from these openings are completely foreign to me and seem like they are taking too long to adjust to. Other opening reccomendations seem good though! The accelerated dragon is generally reccomended all around, and it is covered quite thoroughly here. But you can take what you want and ignore the rest.
Some good analysis and opening suggestions for Playing Black.......2006-09-02
Personally, I take most chess books that offer a suggested opening system with a grain of salt. They tend to be biased in favor of what they suggest. But this book is one of the best I have seen that doesn't become overly biased to to point of recommending moves that are less than sound.
I really like the idea of using the NimzoIndian Defense agaist 1.d4 with 1..Nf6 2.c4 e6 3 Nc3 Bb4. It is an active way of playing against d pawn openings. The lines suggested against 1.e4 using the Sicilian with 1..c5 is not to my taste. So you as well as I may pick and choose what we like. To go along with this book I suggest getting "Understanding the chess openings" by Collins for a good general servay and a good book on chess traps (to learn not only traps in the openings but the tactics that go along with type of opening you choose).
This along with this author's same book on playing White are well done.

Don't mean to sound snobby, but this isn't for amateurs :-/.......2007-05-07
If you want to know everything in full, detailed explanations with pictures and such, but you're past Martha Stewart, Rachael Ray and --god forbid-- Sandra Lee, then get the Joy of Cooking, or the Larousse Gastronomique.
If you think of this as more of a chef's pocket dictionary, you'll better understand what this book's intent and purpose is.
A must have for Chef's.......2007-02-23
I am a Chef specializing in French cooking and this book is a "must have". I could only give it 4 stars as it is not available in paperback that I could keep in my back pocket while in the kitchen.
Indespensible.......2006-11-25
This book was recommened to me by one of the other Chefs that I work with. It has been increasingly important to me when I don't wish to pull out Escoffier and need a quick reference or just a notion or tickle of what goes into a dish. If you are a home cook I don't recommend this book as it is beyond the scope of most home cooks to understand but if you are a professional and don't yet own a copy I suggest that you treat yourself to this delightful work. the grouping can be hard to get used to but once you are past that you are home free. Enjoy!
A precious tool.......2006-10-12
I've owned this book since day one of my apprenticeship, twenty eight years ago and still use it to this day... I have the french version but gave my Friend the English version. This book was written almost a century ago and still is used by many chefs and serious cooks....
Very misleading.......2006-03-05
Not sure who this book was intended for. It is basically a dictionary of sorts, trying to define all sorts of food types and methods. Two problems come up quickly. First the definitions are very terse and of little use. Explaining stock as bones and vegetables cooked together, does little to help the reader gain understanding, and that is one of the better definitions! Secondly, many of the terms are outdated or missing. I realize how long ago Escoffier lived, but the references to items that changed their names a hundred years ago, makes finding anything very difficult, and usually completely unrewarding.

Disappointed.......2007-03-27
Although the book looks like it would be good, we have not been able to get a product that is properly put together. Pages are missing or pages are repeated over and over. After several tries, we have given up on this songbook.
Great for every dead head.......2007-02-03
This book is awsome. Basically it is a bunch of covers but it gives dead heads the chance to play something that the common person might actuall know(how sweet it is, stir it up, shining star etc.)Great book, i recomend it
Product Description
This ambitious book aims to arm you with a complete repertoire against 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3. It is based on the Najdorf system with Black employing the ...e5 approach against most major choices of White. The only exception is the open fianchetto variation 6 g3, where 6...e6 is the main line.
The book follows the structure of another Chess Stars publication, The Safest Sicilian. Every system is examined in a separate part which contains three chapters. First, Quick Repertoire provides you with the vital information that you need to start playing the variation. Step by Step is the reference chapter with all branches covered in depth. The Complete Games chapters include altogether 50 commented games which display typical ideas or pawn structures.
You'll find a lot of original analysis on the most critical positions of the Najdorf.
The material is up-to-date as of February 10 2007.
Chapters about the English Attack 6 Be3 and the Classical 6 Be2 as well as 6 a4 are written by grandmaster Atanas Kolev. He has played many times for Bulgarian Olympic team. He also worked as coach of Bulgarian women's team. His current Elo is 2538.
The rest of the book is written by grandmaster Kiril Georgiev. Kiril has been in the chess elite for 20 years with rating above 2650. He participated in 12 Olympiads, mostly as Bulgarian first board. In 2006, he took the bronze at the European championship.
Book Description
Here is a world-class chess repertoire for Black against 1.e4. As the title suggests, the repertoire is based on the respected Spanish Opening, or the Ruy Lopez, as it is sometimes called. In his previous book, Beating the Open Games, Grandmaster Mihail Marin dealt with White's options up to 3.Bb5. Now Marin provides all the answers for Black after 4.Ba4. This depth of chess expertise has rarely been published for a mass audience before, as grandmasters usually prefer to keep their secrets. The complexity of the material could have been daunting, but Marin is also a master of explaining profound ideas to a wide audience.
