Got a problem with grout? Open The Complete Photo Guide to Home Repair (to page 98) and watch your tiling worries dissolve before the simple beauty of photography. Black & Decker has anticipated your every question and problem with interior, exterior, and home systems repairs, and detailed the solutions in just over 500 pages. In no other human endeavor is a visual guide so important as home repair (well, maybe brain surgery), so this is a crucial aid to the handyperson. Easy-to-find sections on floors, insulation, roofing, chimneys, water heaters, wall switches, air conditioning, and much more are well-designed, brilliantly illustrated, and carefully outlined with step-by-step instructions from masters. The photos in particular are extremely valuable, offering many different views (sometimes even exploded) of the operation in question, and always showing just enough to communicate without overwhelming the reader with too much detail. These alone would be worth the price of the book, but the written explanations and instructions are also very helpful, offering tools, materials lists, and hints that wouldn't occur to the amateur. The book finishes with a maintenance schedule to help you keep repairs from becoming serious, and the end papers have conversion charts and tables that you'll use time and again. If you can't have Norm the master carpenter over to help you fix your old house, The Complete Photo Guide to Home Repair is the next best thing. --Rob Lightner

Outstanding guide.......2007-09-13
I'm in the process of looking for my first home, and I bought this book knowing that I'd need to do repairs as a homeowner. I got more than I had asked for. The text is very clear, and the pictures are precise and thorough.
Not only do I feel more prepared to make my own home repairs after this book, but it has also helped me to spot problem areas within the homes I've looked at. If you're looking for one book that's got it all, BUY THIS BOOK!
Great Book.......2007-07-22
Absolutely wonderful book with endless projects. I have yet to do a project that was not in this book. It is like an unabridged dictionary for home repair.
Never Received.......2007-05-28
This product was never delivered so I am very upset. I was charged for it but it was never delivered so I have to say I am very, very angry at Amazon for this inconvenience - especially since it was ordered as a gift for a very special person.
Home Repair.......2007-05-07
This is a good book for those do-it-yourselfers that like photos with their instructions. It covers a wide variety of general repairs and would be good for a novice to home repair
Good book.......2007-05-02
Its a great book to give you ideas for how to fix things or how to make general home improvements.

Customer Reviews:
Great as reference or tutorial.......2007-10-04
I don't buy many woodworking books because most, especially the ones sold by home centers, aren't very good. They lack detail, they're incomplete, and I often get the feeling that they're just cranked out without much thought. But this one caught my eye in a local bookstore and I'm glad I bought it.
First of all, the book can be used either as a reference or as a complete primer on woodworking. There's lots of information there, but not so much that you get bogged down. At first I just used it to brush up on specific topics, and then I went back to the first page and started reading it straight through. It's well-written; words are used well and not wasted. Photography is superb. Despite the reference to generic "Furniture" in the title, the book is heavily oriented toward cabinets, which it covers in great detail, even to the point of describing how to construct multi-light glass doors.
The first few pages are a little off-putting as the author describes what he considers an appropriate collection of tools and a space to put them in; unfortunately, many woodworking books assume that the reader has acres of space in which to set up a shop. As you read on, though, the text is more friendly toward the hobbyist.
In short, this is a great woodworking reference or tutorial. Don't be put off by the beginning of the book; it gets better. And the Amazon price for this book is much lower than the $40 I paid in the bookstore.
disappointed.......2007-09-24
I found this book very disappointing. The pictures were very pretty but that is pretty much it. The illustrations were confusing and of little use. It gives too much of an overview and no real specifics. I found woodworking for dummies to be a much better book for the beginning woodworker.
The benchmark book on furniture making.......2007-08-05
It is well known that woodworkers have different styles. I think Andy Ray's style will work for majority people trying to learn woodworking. His writing is clear, and he also presents thoughts in logical way. Thus, the book precisely explain why he does this way but not another.
Great Resource for Beginners.......2007-07-05
I purchased this book because I had the interest to learn more about furniture design and building technique. It's very well written, easy to understand and the quality photos help visualize the instructions of the author. It's a great resource to beginners because of the structure of the book. It starts with basic tools and their use, workshop design, and then moves on to basic wood explanations and building techniques. It also gives you ideas on additional readings if you'd like to research a topic in more detail. I would recommend this book to anyone that is interested woodworking by making it a part of your home library.
Great literature for a novice or tradesman.......2007-05-25
This book has plenty to offer anyone. A lot of it was review for me, but it is always good to make sure you don't forget the basics as you move forward in carpentry - it's like trying to attempt calculus without algebra.
I have read this from cover to cover and feel I could read it again to pick up on the little things I missed. It is indeed as it's titled, the "complete" guide. I will say that some basic knowledge will be instrumental for fully grasping and understanding this book, but for the most part, explinations are clear, concise, and simple. There are a few charts in this book that make it very handy and also some very good pointers - some of it is very helpful, but doesnt' seem to be able to adhere to any of my brain cells, so this is one book I like to have close to my shop.
Overall, I'm pleased with this book, and can't wait to read Taunton Press' Complete Illustrated Guide to Joinery, which is referred to in this book from time to time.

Home Improvement Book.......2007-08-15
A great closing gift for a home buyer. Get them started on the right foot! Easy to understand
A little bit of everything, not much of anything..........2007-05-26
The problem with books such as these is that they do not always provide enough detail to really help you get the job done. This results in your having to buy additional books to supplement your knowledge.
In my case, I am currently remodeling my kitchen. I have never done this kind of work before; BUT, I figure that I am reasonably bright so I can learn as I go, right? I purchsed this book as it seemed to provide just about the best general reference out there.
As I mentioned above, though, it does not always provide a great deal of detail. The section on hanging drywall, for example, does not cover the subject with enough depth to teach an amateur how to do it cleanly and neatly. You will likely have to buy a specific drywall book for more information. Ditto for the section on windows, laying tile, etc.
The one subject so far that did seem to contain enough detail to get the job done was the section on wiring. I was able to add several outlets (and I have never done this kind of thing before) with the aid of this book alone.
I give it 4 stars as it serves it's purpose (an overview on home renovation) admirably. If you really want to learn these things in detail, though, you may want to look at the Black and Decker "Complete" how to books. In fact, this book appears to be a kind of "greatest hits" of the single subject books. Wide, but not deep.
Novice Reference.......2007-05-16
This book is a super resource for anyone who wants to do home improvement, but knows little or nothing about the process. Lots of photos with technical terminology enable the novice to communicate with the pros.
Black & Decker is the king of home improvement books..........2007-03-08
This book continues the excellence in the line of the Black and Decker series of "Photo Guide" books. No other book comes close to providing the quantity and quality of photos. The photos are clear and much better at communicating the task then standard illustrations. Every project is detailed with a handful of photos.
Great book. Great to have on the shelf as a reference book. Awesome book for first-time home owners that want to have a handle on do-it-yourself projects.
Best home improvement book for pros and novices.......2007-01-11
I find this book excellent due to the simple directions, tips, and photos and drawings that are clear enough so the reader can see all the details. Some improvement books have illustrations that leave you scratching your head in confusion.

One of the most daunting endeavors for any would-be do-it-yourselfer is dealing with the electrical--namely, electrical repairs, improvements, and wiring and rewiring projects. The reason for this is simple: mistakes can cause fires, major disasters and expense, and even death. But anyone can learn about safe and correct wiring in order to complete repairs or add new wiring to an aging and inadequate system. This is the book to show you how, from the basics of how electricity works and simple repairs and projects, all the way to complicated rewiring you might otherwise assume must be done by a professional. Included are the most up-to-date electrical code requirements; guides to evaluating, planning, and installing new electrical circuits; repair advice on switches, receptacles, and fixtures; and a detailed and well-illustrated lighting design section. A total of 288 pages of hundreds of illustrations and photographs and a comprehensive reference index make this an ideal book for the beginner, and an up-to-date refresher course for the professional. --Mark A. Hetts
Book Description
The all-time best-selling wiring book now better than ever. Includes a full range of repair and upgrade wiring projects. Special circuit maps take all guesswork out of wiring lights, switches, receptacles and appliances. Features a dedicated chapter on connecting and networking home electronics. Shows how to use state-of-the art wireless technology. Earlier editions of The Complete Guide to Home Wiring sold more than 500,000 copies, and this expanded new book includes all the tried-and-true projects from earlier editions, updated to feature the latest fixtures. The book now meets the requirements of the newest National Electrical Code, including important changes for bathroom, kitchen and utility area wiring. No book is more complete when it comes to traditional wiring.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent, Comprehensive Guide .......2007-09-30
I was very pleased with this book. I am planning a home addition and I plan to rewire my house myself from scratch. All the information I need seems to be covered in the book.
Solid Book.......2007-08-31
Knowing very little on this subject this book is great and covers most jobs anyone would want to take on themselves at home and maybe in other places
very basic.......2007-08-16
This is a very basic book on electrical. The drawings showing electrical hookups are misleading because that's not how an electrician would wire. You don't go in and out of a receptacle with the hot and neutral on the receptacle itself; you pigtail. My fear is that some home owner will try and tackle these projects with no understanding of electrical theory
or on the job training
The difference between electrical and other trades is that if you make a mistake you could be dead or burn you're house down.
Excellent Book.......2007-06-07
I consider myself mechanically inclined but have never touched anything to do with electricity before. Well I bought a house a few years ago and it's either learn how to do it, or pay double and hire someone.
Most books always leave me with only 75% confidence to do the job myself but there are always some important parts that are confusing. Not with this book, it is step-by-step with full color detailed photos.
I went to Home Depot and got circuit breakers, receptacles, switches, GFCI's, etc. and they are exactly the same thing that are in the photos.
So far I have completely wired a 250sf addition, outside lights, and run a full 50amp sub panel to my garage with a dedicated 240 volt circuit for my compressor and welder. All from this one book.
Highly recommended

the complete guide to home carpentry.......2007-03-08
received book in a timely manner and in excellent condition
Very clear and well explained book........2006-05-04
I bought this book for a garage project of mine and the decent reviews it had. I must say the reviews are well deserved. This book offers plenty of photos and well explained "how-to" guide lines. Detailed explanation with photos of all the tools you'll need for your project. I can now do my projects with confidence considering I am a novice at carpentry. Excellent choice for the novist.
So far from complete its an insult to carpenters.......2006-04-16
Had to give 1 star to off set the other reviews. My problem with most of these carpentry books is their lack of conviction to a topic. I have been a carpenter for way longer than 4 years (the accepted journeyman level). In truth it takes a lifetime to keep up with new practices and master traditional techniques. If you need to read 93 PAGES OF 277 on what a particular tool is or how to set up a saw then you really are not ready for complete carpentry. You need to develop your understanding of the tools.
Taunton Press is my recommendation for high quality information. Most of their publications assume you know how to use your tools. I would like to see quality books on specific skills. The complete all in one would have to be text book size and come in volumes. One good example is Lewis Vogt Carpentry 3rd edition. Used in construction management courses.
This book is just fluff. A weekend warrior might find some good info to improve his garage or better use his tools.
Not a great book........2006-01-16
This book doesn't include any text about stairs. I guess most complete homes don't need stairs. I find this book more of a coffee table book than a book I can count on for howto information.
Good Basic Book!.......2005-12-27
I got this book from my wife for Christmas, and I was immediately able to use it! I'm a computer geek, and usually when I get a hammer in my hand, it ends up either hitting my fingers or making a bigger hole in the wall.
This book teaches ALL the basics, from how to saw wood to how to frame and install a new door in a new wall! The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that it's still a reference book - it's not something that I'd pore over in the middle of the night and couldn't put down.
It's still a great book!

New Home Owers Handbook.......2007-09-02
A great book for the new homeowner. It gives you all the basics you need to know in order to make those little repairs or remodel projects that seem to pop up around the home.
A must have for any home owner or do-it-yourselfer.......2007-05-20
I received the first edition of this book as a gift back in 1975 and I have been attached to it ever since. This newly updated version is an absolute blessing. Great illustrations, easy-to-read-and-follow instructions and well organized. I reach for this book any time I am about to tackle to new do-it-yourself project. This book will more than pay for itself...and save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars in labor and materials costs. My only wish is that RD had included some project plans like they had in the first edition. I built a beautiful floating platform bed from the plans in that book.
Great detail (US).......2006-06-09
I've had this book since 1991 and it is still the BEST in its class. I own and have read many other "do-it-yourself" manuals on home improvment and thia one is hands down the best. It's simple to read, yet each new section give lots of details and great illustrations.
Buy the new edition.......2005-04-09
This is an excellent book for the novice do-it-yourselfer. I was intimidated with a lot of the work needed to be done on my new home, but this book made it all seem possible. It was clear what things I could tackle myself, and what things are best left to a pro. I particularly liked the section on fasteners - it was something I didn't understand, although I thought I should!, and it gave a detailed description of what to use where, and why. I had a lot of lightbulb moments reading this book.
One note - be sure to pick up the new edition, which I hear is much improved (hard to believe)-it just came out feb 05 and is not the first one amazon brings up - the new edition is actually cheaper as I write this.
Lots of information.......2004-12-07

Book Description
The only plumbing book you'll ever need. Do-it-yourself plumbing can save homeowners more money than almost any other type of home improvement. All it takes is the information and skills you can learn from this third edition of The Complete Guide to Home Plumbing. Virtually every type of plumbing repair and installation is included, from the very simple (stopping a leaky faucet) to the most complex (removing old plumbing pipes and installing a new system). Now with nearly 120 step-by-step projects! New to this edition are a wide range of timely, popular projects including: home spa maintenance, installing water purifying systems; installing an up-flush toilet; laying a landscape irrigation system; installing a water softener; and installing a modern claw-foot tub with exposed plumbing pipes.
Customer Reviews:
Almost too many photos.......2007-03-26
This book is chock full of photos; so much that it detracts from providing information. I was trying to use it to replace a leaking shower faucet, but couldn't find any useful info about my setup. All there was were pictures of valves that weren't mine. I would like to see more troubleshooting chapters, and more possible fitting/material variations outlined. For instance I would like to know how to go from plastic to copper to galvanized etc.
Still if you doing a new install and have access to the exact material they use then it is good for that.
the complete guide to home plumbing.......2007-03-08

an excellent book........2007-01-10
It is an excellent book not only for handyman beginners but also for construction professionals to review plumbing details.
Complete Guide to Home Plumbing.......2006-11-30
If you are looking for pretty pictures this is the book to buy. It is not a book for doing plumbing. Be careful before you follow the instructions, it is not adquate for detail plumbing. It just gives you the basics. For example it does not give you the required distances for most plumbing fixtures and shows notching many wood studs in the wall which could cause serious damage to the structure. Be Aware!!
DIY, simply the best.......2006-11-25
Clear illustrations, many cutaways, and clear, concise language mark this edition of "The Complete Guide to Home Plumbing" as one of the best ever. I previewed eight or ten newer plumbing editions at my local library before purchasing, and this one stood heads above the rest. I fully recommend it.

Good overview but can't do it all.......2006-08-02
This is a nice overview of bathroom remodeling projects. It's targetted at the DIY-er but even if you're contracting out, it will give you some design ideas and help make you aware of the choices you'll need to consider. It contains a number of how-tos with lots of photos for both demolition and construction or remodeling. However, if you are serious about DIY, this book is just a start. It lacks detail in many important areas. For instance, the drywall section is a laughable 3-4 pages and the tub installation is definitely minimal. (Nothing in there about framing to make an enclosed tub fit the space!) I don't regret buying the book, but I ended up purchasing additional plumbing, eletrical, drywall, and tile books for my major DIY bathroom remodeling project. Also, for those who own several other Black & Decker home improvement series books, you'll find recycling of many photos and instruction in this book. There is clear duplication of content with the B&D plumbing and electrical books.
Excellent book.......2006-07-30
I'm reasonably handy but I don't have any professional construction experience. I'm in the process of completely remodeling a bathroom from the studs & joists in. In preparation, I've read a lot of books on construction and plumbing. This book is my favorite of the bunch.
First, it's VERY well illustrated--you could probably learn 90% of what you need to know just by looking at the photographs.
The captions accompanying the photographs are for the most part reasonably clear. I say "for the most part" because the instructions on installing fixtures suffer a little bitfrom a lack of specificity. You can't really blame the authors for this, though--copper pipes are more or less the same no matter who the manufacturer is, but what's true for a Price Pfister faucet may not always be true for some other brand. On the other hand, the professional advice given in the instructions and sidebars more than makes up for any shortcoming. Personally, I feel like I got my money's worth .

This is an excellent book for the beginner through pro. It provides many helpful insights.
Home Improvement projects.......2005-06-08
I bought several of the B&D books and they are helpful but they routinely copy items from the other books. The bathroom book and plumbing book share alot of the same content - disappointing when you purchase two books but you are only getting 1 1/2 of new material.

Beats saving all the Handyman Magazines.......2007-09-30
This is an excellent "fix it yourself" book that includes many fixes you can find only in The Handyman Magazine. The magazine is a top-notch periodical, in my opinion, for guys like me - mediocre at making everyday fixes to common problems around the home. This is the latest upadate I could find, and for the price, it was an excellent deal. For all you do-it-yourselfers who have two left hands, and for indepent women who need to economize, this is an a very good book. Covers most every day maintenance and repair stuff that comes up when you least expect and need a fairl quick, but easy and inexpensive fix. I'd buy this one again.
Ecellent.......2007-09-26
My husbsnd thinks this book is fantastic,a lot of pointers for the do it yourself person. And delivery was excellent, i received it sooner than i expected.
Good Book.......2007-01-03
Pretty useful book that covers a wide variety of topics and explains things pretty well through words and pictures. The only issue is that it is sometimes missing topics that probably should be in the book, but my complaints are few and far between. I recommend this book for what is already in it.
Very good!.......2006-02-23
This do-it-yourself book is very good. It is an excellent resource for the homeowner with some to many handyman skills. My first complaint is that several projects are way beyond the capacity of the weekend home-warrior. Secondly, many of the instructions are not detailed enough. You are forced to figure out internal steps to procedures on your own. I have the original 1973 edition, and its new look and upgrade is amazing. It is a book I wouldn't do without.

Book Description
The Complete Guide to Ceramic Stone Tile shows how to use time-saving techniques and materials in virtually any tile application a homeowner is likely to encounter, both indoors and outdoors. Though installing ceramic tile can still be time consuming, it is no longer particularly difficult, which makes it an ideal project for do-it-yourselfers. Homeowners can save hundreds-or even thousands-of dollars by doing the work themselves. In addition to its practical benefit, ceramic and stone tile lends itself to creative expression. Readers of this book will not only master the basics of tile installation, they will discover hundreds of purely decorative ways to use ceramic tile around the house. The Complete Guide to Ceramic Stone Tile begins by teaching readers how to design a custom interior using tile, then presents in-depth, step-by-step information on all types of tile installation, including floors, walls, patios, countertops, backsplashes, and shower stalls. The book even includes decorative mosaic treatments that can be used to create ornamental tabletops, coffeetables, and garden planters. Readers will learn how to work with all types of tile in addition to ceramic, including quarry tile, terra cotta, and natural stone.
