5 out of 5 stars Good to have.........2006-12-14

This is a goog book to have. For amateurs like me this book breaks methods down to a step by step illustrated and recipes for paint effects and faux finishes. Worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Bookcase Item.......2006-11-10

This is a good general reference book. I am glad that I purchased it, but it isn't my faux painting Bible. However, if you are looking for many ideas, inspirations and photos, this is a good item for you. I am a seasoned amateur and for me, I need specific product references to really make the recipes work. This is more general. The bottom line; it is a nice book to own.

3 out of 5 stars Great Information for an Amateur Painter.......2006-11-07

This book has many finishes and the instructions to complete each. For an experienced painter of faux finishes, this is too simple, but for a person just getting started ion doing this kind of work, this is a good instruction book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book an Excellent service.......2006-07-18

this book arrived in wonderful condition in the specified days.It has proved to have all the receipes I required an more.

In addition to common craft materials, there are recipes for:

• Clean mud
• Bubbles
• Soap crayons
• Bath salts
• Perfume
• Invisible ink
• Colored macaroni or rice
Ã,
Children will be thrilled to discover the works of art they can create with their new craft materials as they enhance their senses of touch, taste, smell, and sight. All of these recipes have been tested for safety and outcomes if followed as directed.

5 out of 5 stars Handy book and a fun way to spend time with children.......2007-10-11

I think this book is wonderful! If you have any of the "how to make and do things" type of books some of these recipes might be included but to see them all laid out in order with recipes for different things is very nice! Plus most of the recipes all share common ingredients so you don't need to buy a lot of hard to find stuff for each project.

The way this book is laid out, with one recipe per page and large print,is very easy for children to read.My daughter really enjoyed being able to read the list and help mix up the ingredients. We especially liked the gloop and glop recipes for making slime.

If you work at a school or daycare or if your kids go through paint and playdough like it is going out of style,I highly reccomend this book to cut supply cost because whipping up large batches of supplies will save you lots of money and if you get the kids involved is an awesome learning experience!

5 out of 5 stars A life saver!!.......2007-08-30

This book has been a great help to me as a stay at home mom of a toddler!! Great ideas to keep her busy when the weather is too hot to get outside(or as winter approaches too cold!). I love the ideas and my daughter has loved the varied activities in her "art" time!

5 out of 5 stars Make Your Own Play Dough Review.......2007-08-03

I have to assume that this book is very good. I bought it for someone else and had it sent directly to them. They specifically asked for it by name and author.

5 out of 5 stars Preschooling on a budget.......2007-03-08

Every parent, teacher, childcare provider, and scout leader should have this budget friendly book. The variety of recipes, science experiments, and resourceful materials presented are valuable for expanding a child's education. Using just about everything a person already has in his/her kitchen, creative materials can be formed with little cost. It includes over 100 recipes, and presents ideas for every season of the year.

I recommend buying this book, not just to have fun with your children, but for the knowledge they will gain, homemade gift ideas, holiday decorations, and the many other educational teaching elements it provides. You will find simple, but affordable gift ideas for children to make, discovery table suggestions, and many experiments. Each chapter of the book lists what children can learn and accomplish. Whether your child needs help learning measurements, hand-eye coordination, or learning science, you'll find this book to offer it all. The recipes and activities offer instructive and physical advantages for children, and teach them, as well as parents, about ways to recycle.

The Author has worked with young children for over ten years, and the quality of her experience in this book is evident. She understands that family resources are difficult to manage and still afford the extras, while providing an educational and fun activity for kids.

5 out of 5 stars really really fun and helpful but..............2002-05-03

...

I have both of her books and they are both great, helpful etc..the life-lesson i learned is...if it doesn't work out..paint over it and start again. ...

3 out of 5 stars Great ideas, poor execution.......2002-04-02

The projects in this book are definitely cool. However, I encountered two substantial problems.

First, it was difficult to find some of the supplies. I live in a metropolitan area (2 million people) and could only find one place that sold liming wax. I spent an hour on the phone calling places looking for it. I finally found a supplier 40 miles away.

Second, the colors in the book are quite different than in person. I added the specified amount of artist's paint to create the terracota fresco. The color was suppose to be orangish. It turned out to be pink. Let me tell you, my husband did not appreciate that at all.

My recommendation, take her ideas, but don't use her colors.

5 out of 5 stars Great Value, makes a great housewarming gift.......2000-07-28

This is a wonderful book for anyone wanting to decorate or redecorate their home with style. It is great value because it is literally packed with techniques and ideas to suit anyone's taste. Most effects are surprisingly easy to create.

The book starts out with a through explanation of materials. This includes color photos of all the tools, as well as charts with great information on mixing and thinning paint types, primers, undercoats, solvents, glazes, varnishes, sealants, and metallic finishes. Information about toxicity, uses and whether it should be used indoors or out is included as well. There are even several excellent charts on preparing almost any surface for painting.

Numerous techniques for painting walls including colorwashing, sponging, dragging, rag rolling, stippling, limewashing, dry brushing, fade-away washing, loose-glaze, mock and rubbed back plaster are included. Effects such as Fresco, Mediterranean and Egyptian are also covered as well as creating borders, stone blocking and making distressed plaster patterns.

Then wood effects such as aging, spattering, graining, crackling, combing, and staining are covered. The Scandinavian and Shaker color pallets and styles are demonstrated here too. Stone finishes such as marbling, lapis lazuli, sandstone, porphyry, granite and terracotta follow. Then there are metal finishes including patina, verdigris, rust, lead, iron and bronzing. Finally, lacquer, tortoiseshell, shagreen, leather, stenciling, and gilding techniques are shown.

Most of the projects use latex or acrylic paint, only a few use oils. Step-by-step directions are given for each of these techniques or effects. Close-up photos show the each style in a few different colors and recipes are given for each one. Some styles have pictures of finished rooms or objects done with them.

Since printing accurate colors is tricky and there are so many variables in materials and surfaces, I know that results can vary. I would recommend experimenting on a small scale and tweaking the recipe to get things the color you want. All in all this is fabulous and inspirational book at an excellent price for anyone who wants to do more than brush on off-the-shelf paint.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely to look at and inspiring!.......1999-05-31

I do decorative finishes quite often, and while I have not actually followed any of the paint recipes to the letter, they have provided a jumping-off point for many projects. A nice sourcebook w/ photos of different kinds of tools, pigments, etc. The use of UK measurements and paint terms could be confusing for some people. Overall a very good reference for the serious or semi-serious decorative painter...

3 out of 5 stars Lovely book, but where is my terra cotta stone wall?.......1999-05-20

I have been enchanted with this book since I first saw and acquired it a few years ago. I have followed only a few recipes, partly because it has been difficult to find some of the ingredients in my area. My most pressing complaint, however, echoes comments by an earlier reviewer regarding the accuracy of the recipes. I am in the middle of a faux stone block wall that calls for a base coat and three glaze coats, followed by veining and shadows--a lot of work. It was clear after the first glaze coat that my wall would never be remotely close to the lovely terra cotta color identified (p. 94) as "the basic recipe". Help, Liz, where are you?

5 out of 5 stars A Treasury of Ideas for Home Design - Beautifully Illustrated.......2007-07-17

I am a professional engineer serving as my own architect and general contractor for the conversion of a three-story building into offices for my firm plus a luxury apartment on the top floor. I am also an avid collector of engineering, technology, and architecture/design books with a 1,000-volume personal library.

I wanted to be sure that I explored a wide range of choices as I selected finished for office and apartment spaces in my building. I expected and received in this book a good overview for all of the common finishes used in residential spaces. I also received, much to my delight, a treasury of design ideas in the more than 200 color photos and illustrations. This is not a do-it-yourself handbook found at the checkout stand at Home Depot, although those are valuable as well. Although written for those designing living spaces, much of the information is useful for those designing office and other commercial spaces.

This 208-page, wirebound book was beautifully designed - one of perhaps fifteen books in my library whose production qualities are so superior that I show them to friends in the publishing business as examples of a well-produced book. The design and production were by a NYC firm; the printing was done in China; the author is British.

The content is similarly excellent. The book is divided into eight sections: simple paint, paint finishes, plaster & concrete, wall coverings, tiles, wood, glass & metal, and "putting it all together."

I bought this from one of Amazon's allied sellers at a very low price. Amazon is commended for offering this service. Amazon's committment to customer value and customer service are unsurpassed.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for Faux Painting.......2006-06-14

A woman that is passionately in love with Italy and all things Italian writes this review. Once I traveled to Italy, I wanted to bring that look back to my home. I purchased this book about 10 years ago and I still refer to it regularly. This book covers many techniques not just those that would apply to Italy.

I am an avid do-it-yourselfer and love to do things around the house. As an amateur artist, I take photographs and paint landscapes; I think that this book is a good as taking a class in faux painting. I feel that the directions and photographs of the various techniques are very well documented.

The book is subdivided as follows:

PART I - General Information
Intro - What Decorative Painting Can Do For You
1. Color: The Flavor in Every Recipe
2. Paint and Tools: The Staples
3. Preparing to Paint
4. Mixing Paints
5. Before You Begin
PART II - Recipes
6. Metals
7. Stone
8. Fantasy Marbling
9. Reasonable Replicas
10. Textured Wall Finishes
11. Small Surface Specialties and Stenciling

If you are not an artist, the first chapter on color is very handy. This chapter is also covered in the first book in this series. It teaches about the color wheel, the colors that harmonize, classic color schemes, and color moods. The chapter regarding tools is also very helpful, but again this is covered in the first book. It explains the difference between oil and water based products and the advantages and disadvantages of both. There is also a nice discussion of brushes and other tools that is very useful for the beginning artist.

The recipe for copper verdigris is very easy to replicate. This is one of my personal favorites. Likewise the bronze verdigris is also an easy look to achieve. The faux stone requires much more of an artistic sense to get right than the book suggests. Don't be frustrated if it does look right the first time. If you keep practicing, and look at some natural stone for inspiration, you will get it. I found that much of the difference is in the shadowing and highlighting. The suggested techniques for marbling and extremely are easy to replicate. This might be one of the easier techniques in the book to master. The fresco technique is one that I have used over and over in my home. The author suggests using regular paint and glaze. I found that using lime paint (available at most larger hardware stores) makes a more convincing end result.

Regarding stencils I would recommend using acetate and a stencil burner, it works better for me that the cardstock and exacto knife that is shown in the book. I would also recommend that you buy some poster board or use large pieces of cardboard to practice your techniques. I find this to be much easier than going to the wall immediately. Also, once I find a color combination and technique that I like I replicate the process on a small (8 x 11) piece of luan plywood. On the back of this plywood I document which paint colors and glazes I have used and which tools and techniques. I also document the rooms or furniture on which this combination was used. That way if I need to touch up something I know what I did the first time.

I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to try out some faux painting on his or her walls or their furniture. If you are artistically inclined this book will inspire you to get out the paints and change something in your home. I also recommend the first book in this series "Recipes for Surfaces". There is some duplication, but it also includes techniques not covered in this volume. I have found that the most important aspect to achieving the look that you want is to have a clear idea of what you want the end result to look like. In my case, I use photographs of Italian houses to achieve a similar look. I cannot emphasize enough how important photographs are to recreating a look. Please don't skip the photographs; it will make a huge difference.

Happy painting!

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive book for the beginner and pro alike.......2002-10-26

This is an excellent book for the beginner and professional alike. Good info on how to do all the "basic" faux finishes. Perfect to add to any library.
Only problem is that it can be a bit vague on instructions - especially for the beginner or do-it-yourselfer.

5 out of 5 stars Great Basic Reference.......2001-09-27

Along with the companion book, Decorative Paint Finishes Made Simple, this is one of my core reference books for faux finished paint surfaces. Pictures are useful, instructions clear . . . a must-have for the faux painter's library.

This covers the basics in the front (how to open a paint can, removing stray hairs from a brush, loading the roller, etc.). It also discusses some color theory to help with choosing a color.
Each technique gets several pages that include step-by-step instructions and photos. Also included are six sample results and usually some full room photos so you can see a finished look.
It also takes a variety of techniques to show theme rooms. For example Scandinavian room or a medieval hallway or a provencal kitchen.
All pretty useful if you want to try special paint effects in your home.

I bought this book with 4 other books from Amazon because I already had another book by this author from a local bookshop. I liked her projects so I wanted to look at more projects from her. To my surprise the book I already had (Practiacal Home Paint Effects by the same publisher and author issued in 2001) is almost identical with this book. This book speaks about the materials used, then described the techniques and then the projects follow.
Also, all other books give instructions to mix paint with glaze, but she is mixing paint with wallpaper paste. Unless in the US this is something we do not have here, in my country wallpaper paste is a type of glue and I cannot understant for what it is used for.
The little book I already had is the same except that it does not describe in detail the techniques. Also it is much cheaper and is also available from Amazon. The decorating schemes presented are exactly the same. No new projects are presented.
So if you are looking for ideas buy the other book. If you want details by this one but DO NOT buy both.

I decided to paint my own kitchen cabinets using the faux finish style that is so attractive and popular today. In order to decide on the perfect method and style for my room I ordered 3 different books on painting finishes. I could have saved myself alot of money and just ordered this one book. It truly is the only book you will need for inspiration and direction. The pictures are large and the text is easy to understand and follow. Ms. Cohen has a classic on her hands that I reccommend to anyone who is interested in the art of faux finishing for the home. It is a must have for all at home art libraries.

      Book Description

Since antiquity, artists have mixed pigments and secret ingredients together to create textured paint with particular sheen and luminosity. Achieve that same wizardry by unlocking the secrets of paint alchemy. Mix and transform your own paints to invent colors just for you and your home--at a fraction of the cost of store-bought cans. More than 50 unique recipes, each illustrated with a swatch showing the finished paint and enchanting interior photographs, demystify the complex principles of paint formulation. Special sections offer information on how to grind pigments, basic rules for safe handling of materials, organic pigments, and how to give your paint distinct characteristics--more or less intensity, for example--as well as exciting ideas for alternative recipes and inspirational suggestions for devising unusual paint effects. Concoct a batch of Mellow Silk, Translucent Veil, Gold Varnish, or any of the other brews, and stir up some magic in your home.
