5 out of 5 stars A most.......2007-08-31

I rebuilt my bathroom and completely renovated the shower. This book was my bible. Of course I had other references and ideas to use, but pretty much kept to this book. I had it there by my side while constructing everything from the shower pan, shower walls and tiling it all. Sure I could have done it without this book and my wife would have made me hire a professional to redo my job.

Not to brag, but with the advice from this book people think that a professional DID remodel my bathroom. There is so much satisfaction in doing it yourself and to get a the results as good (and sometimes better) as a pro...

5 out of 5 stars An excellent overview.......2007-06-22

John Bridge has put together an excellent reference for the experienced and novice tile setter alike, and if you're looking to learn the basics to put together a project for the first time, this book is a must read. John's light, conversational style makes the book a quick read, and as mentioned in another review, the online forum on the author's website is also an invaluable reference.

Highly recommended to those who need a to learn the ABCs of tile.

I bought the bookas a gift for a friend who is quite interested in home renovation technique. She was thrilled by it and judging by her reaction, it must be an informative and well written book.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know!.......2007-02-13

This is the ultimate book for tile setters and for those who want to be tile setters. John focuse on all of the little things that the amateurs don't. focus on. The actual tiling itself is the last thing he focuse on. He will teach you the science of laying different types of tiles. You will learn everyting from floor deflection to room layout to determing the square footage and much more. I even learned of a new underlayment product made by Schluter that does not transfer cracks to the tiles due to structural movement and also a waterproofing membrane to use in shower tile installations! I have learned so much Thank you.

I can't believe I was able to do it all with friends & family and alot of sweat/work.

Saved thousands over best few estimates. I see why the labor is so pricy now....

Michael Byrne's Setting Tile is packed with more than enough information for those thinking of taking on a tile job in their home. It is so detailed and thorough that it serves as a Tile 101 introduction for those interested in entering the trade full-time or simply improving their skills and knowledge. Byrne opens this revised and updated version of his previous effort with a brief description of how tile was made 6,000 years ago. Granted, the history lesson may not help someone who's planning to tile a kitchen counter, but Byrne's passion and interest for the subject pay off for the reader in other ways. He advises his readers, for example, that even after they've found the right tile for the bathroom floor or kitchen counter--the one that is just the right color and that the manufacturer recommends--to take those tiles and put them through a few of their own tests. Rub it with your favorite frying pan to see how easily it's marked up and, in turn, cleaned off. Scuff it with junior's hiking boots to see how it endures a day in the life. "I tell my customers in the end that, no matter what grade of tile they select, they can be the best judge of a tile's suitability." Byrne devotes chapters to materials, tools and safety, troubleshooting and repairs, and surface preparation. And in his chapter stressing the importance of doing a proper layout long before setting that first tile, Byrne also gives the reader a few clever ways to check levels, straightedges, and carpenter's squares for accuracy. This is a highly detailed book loaded with technical information that relies equally on photos and illustrations. It's also more about materials and tile samples than completed jobs. Don't buy this book if you're looking for glossy color photos of pristine tile jobs; buy it if you want to learn how to correctly install such jobs. --John Russell

5 out of 5 stars Michael Byrnes's Work is Excellent.......2007-01-09

Michael Byrne's work in both his book "Setting Tile" and his DVD "Tiling Floors with Michael Byrne" are excellent resources for beginners, and were I an experienced tile setter, I would say so for those folks, too.

As a complete novice I recently completed my first tile project, re-doing my bathroom, some 50 square feet. In my opinion it turned out very well considering it was a first time effort. I relied heavily on Mr. Byrnes's works. That would be small by most accounts, but let me assure you, for me, it was large. I am in the process of doing another 500 square feet of work on a plywood substrate. After that I have another 500 feet downstairs on a concrete slab to do.

He makes it simple for anyone to understand. These works will remain life-long resources in my personal library.

While it is not possible to cover everything in any works like these, some areas I would suggest for improvement are some more clarification on areas around door jams in terms of doing the tiling around those, trimming them. More information on toilet removal and installation would have been helpful. The toilet borders on plumbing and that is a subject unto itself though. One more area that would be helpful is the area of cementitious backerboard. There are several kinds on the market and each has its own idiosyncracies.

But if one is considering undertaking a project like this, you can always rely on Amazon.com for additional material.

Works by Taunton Press, the publisher of these media are also recommended. But again, no one resource can be everything. And finally, there is no substitute to finding reliable people to talk things through.

Again, I rate Mr. Byrnes's work as 5 Star.

4 out of 5 stars Not for the beginner.......2006-10-15

Like most Taunton Press publications, Setting Tile skews abit toward the art side of its trade, and it glosses over quite a few things that an absolute novice, or even a fairly skilled worker in another trade, needs in order to get a good result. As other have pointed out, he doesn't go into using mastics or epoxy-based mortars. But those seem like decisions based on his experience with the materials. He simply uses thinset. Enough said.

One ommission that did seem a little odd was the lack of information about working with wet-wall installations. He only uses backer board, which for a worker/writer who is so thorough and skilled seems strange.

Especially given the fact that he does such a great job of explaining, step by step, how to build a shower pan, which is a fussy, finicky, yet back-breaking job if there ever was one.

One other fault (and this may be a fault of Taunton books in general): he doesn't help me anticipate errors. For example: Mr. Byrne recommeds that you fur out the backer board above a shower pan lining so that the board can hang over the lining without getting bumped out. And he recommends butter the back of the board with thinset where it mates with the lining (since you can't drive screws through the board as it would pierce the lining).

Now a non-idiot (not me!) would know that the mortar would tend to push the backer board out, especially in the corners where the lining is folded to three times its typical thickness. Such a non-idiot would fur out a little extra and use a little less mortar.

But not me: I butter the hell out of the back of the backer board and by the time the mortar set the board's bottom was out of pumb a good 3/16 of inch. Not a huge deal, until you try to make the tials look nice and perfect.

So some idiot warnings would be nice. Sort of a follow my advice, but here are some things to watch out for.

Then again, no taunton book I've ever owned (quite a few) does a good job with newbies.

Regardless, this is a good, solid look at installing tile, especially installing and designing complex patterns. But you might need to augment it with something from Time Life say ;-)

Book Description

Virtually no other form of American architecture is as widespread or as popular as the Spanish Revival style. From bungalows and mansions to gas stations and government buildings, its influence-and its fans-can be found everywhere. Yet there has never been a single comprehensive survey of this diverse category of design.

In Red Tile Style, Arrol Gellner describes the rich history and fertile permutations of Spanish Revival architecture. Packed with more than 250 lush color photographs taken by Douglas Keister, this handsome volume ranges from the style's origins in the Spanish colonial churches of the Southwest to its emergence as a commercial form in late-nineteenth-century railroad stations to the nationwide explosion in popularity sparked by the 1915 Panama-California Exposition in San Diego. Learned, lucid, and pleasing to the eye, Red Tile Style explores the far-reaching Spanish Revival influence in today's architecture in all its variations and adaptations. For the serious student and architecture fan alike, this book is truly a landmark.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Charming book.......2007-08-31

Gellner's book captures all the charm of the 1920-1930 Spanish style homes in California. There are hundreds of pictures of this type of home--lots of mansions as well as small bungalows suitable for people of very modest means. Lots of ideas for anyone building a home or doing remodeling. I was especially struck by one "Marina District home ...(which) gives the illusion of depth and complexity despite its constricted urban site". Wish I could find an architect like that one.

5 out of 5 stars FAB!!!.......2004-04-20

This book gives a GREAT history on these "spanish style homes"...as soon as the book arrived, i went thru it just studying the photos ans reading the subtitles - (i was imediately educated on the style). Then i went and started reading it from the beginning. WOAH!!!! It did a great job at explaining the history and the developement of what we just generally refer to "spanish style."
It is truley an informative book. Especially if you really like the mission/spanish look.
we are working on our new home, and it will be great to not only decorate it how we like, but also KNOW the background and reason to why we decorate it how we do.

5 out of 5 stars Building a Spanish Colonial? This is the Bible........2003-12-25

In researching a Spanish Colonial retirement home for Florida, I've reviewed numerous similar books. As noted in the other reviews most books deal with the top-of-the-line mansions and hotels in this style. This book has a chapter just on examples of modest houses in this style. It has another chapter on small scale courtyard apartment projects. It has tons of the details you might want to employ to give your home the "authentic" feel. Of all the books I read, this is the one I BOUGHT!!

5 out of 5 stars Buy this Book!.......2003-04-05

There are books out there that cover the spanish revival style, but, most tend to focus on the larger than life homes of people who can afford magnificent, large estates. Finally, a book that not only showcases the large estates out there, but, more importantly for me, the "smaller" more realistically sized homes that I could see myself living in. If you love this style of architecture as I do, buy this book, you will not be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book For Reference Or Just For Pleasure.......2002-12-18

This book is well written and profusely illustrated showing overall views of varied Spanish Colonial Revival structures, residential, commercial and public. It also contains many detail shots of lighting fixtures, plumbing fixtures and other unique parts that make up the whole of this style. The book is valuable to the architect, restorationist, home owner and anyone interested in architecture in general.

5 out of 5 stars Clay person.......2007-01-28

This is an essential book for anyone undertaking clay tile making. Many claim to be that essential book, but based on what is available in my local library, this one really is it. Her projects and those of a range of others included in the book are both great illustrations of the many processes involved and useful for stimulating the creative ideas of her readers.
I'm sick of renewing my library copy. I'm gonna buy my own.

5 out of 5 stars Great ideas and techniques.......2006-03-17

The techniques represented were unique. There were many examples of other clay artists works. Ms. Pozo presented step by step photo processing for each technique. She started with clay basics and moved forward through firing ranges, shrinking, warping, cracking and glazes. She gave excellent usable information on the installation processes.

4 out of 5 stars Good solid reference book.......2005-05-19

This book has a little of everything. If you are just starting out in tile-making it would be an excellent choice. There are a LOT of different decorating techniques, and a very wide range of applications. The book is laid out well, with plenty of photos, so you can see finished examples of the techniques being described in the text below on the page. It would be an excellent beginner-to-novice book.

Personally, I prefer Frank Giorgini's "Handmade Tiles", because it has more technical information, glaze recipes, firing information, etc., but if I were starting out to make tiles on my own and taking them elsewhere for firing, I think Pozo's book would be a better choice.

5 out of 5 stars Must have!.......2005-03-25

This book is a must have from novice to "pro!" It is a beautiful, comprehensive book on tile examples, tile methods, and equipment. Awesome!

Readers of this book will not only master the basics of tile installation, they will discover hundreds of purely decorative ways to use ceramic tile around the house. The Complete Guide to Ceramic Stone Tile begins by teaching readers how to design a custom interior using tile, then presents in-depth, step-by-step information on all types of tile installation, including floors, walls, patios, countertops, backsplashes, and shower stalls. The book even includes decorative mosaic treatments that can be used to create ornamental tabletops, coffeetables, and garden planters. Readers will learn how to work with all types of tile in addition to ceramic, including quarry tile, terra cotta, and natural stone.

I was shocked when I recieved my dungeon tiles in the mail. These are a great addition to any game of D&D. Considering I was using cardboard cutouts from cereal boxes with 1" squares drawn all over them for my older adventures, these are an improvement. Although an improvement over the "Arcane Hallways" set, I was still unimpressed. There are too many little pieces (once again) that take too long to set up. Some of the larger pieces are useful though. I wish they would just release sets of building floor plans, in order to create quick towns, instead of one building per set.

5 out of 5 stars Great Accessory.......2007-03-19

This and the other Dungeon Tiles are a great visual accessory for any D&D game. Whether you use the prepainted miniatures or counters, sometimes it is difficult to describe a dungeon accurately. These tiles eliminate that problem. A great purchase

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and nearly indestructable.......2007-03-05

I've been able to purchase all three sets so far, and can attest to their use and durability.

I had some fall out of my gaming kit and into the snow, I collected them all, except two I missed. The first I found the next day, the second a week later, sopping wet.

Despite the elements and the time passed, they dried out, and even the one a week later was only slightly warped. Pressing between two books fixed it just fine.

    Book Description

Tile has been transformed in the popular imagination from a pedestrian material to a sought-after design element. Home centers, specialty tile shops, and Internet sources offer the average homeowner an amazing range of mass-produced, handmade, and custom tile types made of materials including ceramics, natural stone, metal, and glass.

Organized by room, with chapters covering kitchens, bathrooms, living spaces, entries, and mudrooms, Tile Idea Book presents hundreds of photographs showing the effects created by all the major types of tile available today when installed in different settings: large rooms, such as kitchens, and small ones, such as bathrooms and entryways. It shows how color, pattern, and texture can be used to create special effects on floors and walls and provides specific information on how to recreate these effects. Also covered is the decorative use of tile in fireplaces and hearths, wainscoting, stairs, and halls, as well as in exterior settings such as terraces and patios.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for my customers!.......2006-04-10

The Tile Idea Book by Andrew Wormer is my favorite book to show to my customers when they're struggling with what they want to do design-wise for their next tile job. We flip through the pages and get great ideas for kitchens, bathrooms -- just about any space where tile is the answer. This book was a very good investment. Grout Girl

5 out of 5 stars WORTH THE MONEY.......2007-05-09

If you can find any set of tiles for under $10 (including shipping), it's a deal hands down. I was expecting 6 sheets of glossy like tag-board about half the size of a sheet of paper each. What I received really blew me away for the value. Each tile sheet is the full size of a standard hardback D&D book. They're printed on very durable cardboard like you find in a kid's floor puzzle. And while they're glossy, they're also textured slightly with a kind of subtly raised crosshatch pattern that "zings" when you run the sharp part of your finger nail over it quickly. This keeps whatever markers you use from sliding all around on it. Now instead of each tile being the same size as the full piece of cardboard it's printed on, (other than 2 of the 6) each card is comprised of various sized individual tiles that you punch out of the cardboard, so when you're all done you have a stack of 38 separate tiles. 2 of the 38 tiles (a tavern and a house) are the full size of the sheet (8x10 squares), but all the rest range from 4x8 squares down to a 1x1. They all are double sided with various features on one side and mostly all blank dungeon floors on the reverse.

I was really surprised to find such a nice product, I'm looking forward to acquiring the rest of the set (up to 6 now!).

5 out of 5 stars Fun and Useful!.......2007-04-07

I bought this set along with Arcane Corrridors Dungeon Tiles, Set 2 (Dungeons & Dragons Supplement) and Hidden Crypts Dungeon Tiles, Set 3 (Dungeons & Dragons Accessory)and I love them! While they are useful for playing D&D they are very fun to just arrange on the floor. The artwork is fantastic and they are very durable. I have always wanted tiles where you can build your own rooms and hallways; now I can! I can't wait for more sets to come out.

3 out of 5 stars Nice to use.......2007-04-03

Nice to use, but not absolutely necessary. Helps to design your dungeons.

5 out of 5 stars Best product ever produced for D & D.......2007-02-24

These are high-quality, well produced and very helpful aids to the D & D game. Almost indestructible and in a variety of formations, these can be readily used in most dungeon delving situations. The only drawback noted is that there are no cave/cavern tiles. I have been told that further editions will remedy this. These tiles make miniature use a hundred times easier than it was before. Being that miniatures are being pushed heavily by the 3.5 game, this tile release makes perfect sense and it is nice that "perfect sense" actually meant something to someone at WOTC.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Value D&D Product Out There.......2007-02-22

The tactical nature of 3.5 D&D combat begs for miniatures. A gridded surface to put those miniatures on is almost essential. Dungeon Tiles provide that surface in an attractive and durable package.

You get 6 full sheets of cardboard tiles. Each tile is protected with a finish that has a bit of 'tooth' to keep it from slding around on the tabletop. The art on the tiles is excellent and the first set strikes a good compromise between generic tiles and speciality bits.

I really do think these tiles give the best 'bang for the buck' of any D&D product out there. I don't know of a single DM that wouldn't benefit from a set or two of these in his/her collection.
