Design from the Plant's Perspective!.......2000-12-12
The Xeriscape Handbook goes into an area of landscape design not often touched on - landscape design from the plant's point of view. Gayle Weinstein has written a book that will help gardeners and landscape designers at all levels figure out why their planting designs aren't working out as planned and how to start moving in the right direction to achieve desired results. It's in big part due to Weinstein's writing style, which succeeds in making complicated subjects interesting without being overly simple or to scientific.
The "root" of the problem is often found in the choices they make in plants for their site. To help people make the best choices, Weinstein's book provides plenty of good information about the environment and on why plants grow where they do. The book tells you how to organize plant groups according to their needs for water, sunlight, etc. to achieve what Weinsten calls "a compatible alliance among the garden, landscape, and natural world."
One of the best things about the Xeriscape Handbook is that anyon in any part of the country can use it. Using the steps outlined in the book, you gain a better understanding of your site and the unique challenges you face in landscape projects. Yes, the book pays particular attention to more arid regions of the country, but it teaches all readers how to "read" their own site. Landscape Architects call this "site analysis" and use the techniques as one of the first steps in professional design. You can use the techniques too, no matter where you live and this book provides a clear outline on the steps involved in fun and interesting ways.
Another Plus to this book is that it provides lots of good information on maintaining plants once you have selected them and have your design in the ground. Utilizing the "Principals of Xericsape" found in the book, you will end up with a landscape design that uses less water and is easier to care for, while still providing beauty and functionality. That saves not only money, but minimizes many of the frustrations faced in gardening.
The bottom line is that everyone can use the information in this book to create better designs, in ways that connect and relate their design to the beauty of the natural world...no matter where you are in it.
As a Landscape Architect, I highly recommend this book along as a good addition to any gardening library.

Book Description
Microsoft Expression Suite promises new levels of power in creating rich dynamic user experiences on the web; Expression Web, one of the excellent programs within the suite, is a powerful web site creation tool that allows you to rapidly build up standards-compliant web pages, style them with CSS, add dynamic ASP.NET functionality to them, and publish them to the web--all from the comfort of one program.
Foundations of Microsoft Expression Web: The Basics and Beyond is one of the first books available on the program. The author--expert MS trainer and MVP Cheryl D. Wise--starts with the very basics, and then takes you to an advanced level through a series of practical real-world exercises. No prior knowledge of Microsoft Expression Suite is assumed, and the book is written with a highly professional tone. This makes it extremely useful whether you're a beginner or an advanced web developer or designer who wants to make use of the software.

Learning.......2007-09-12
The format of the tutorials are not consistant throughout the book, but I have been able to follow them and complete them. I do like the definitions and tips in this book.
Exemplary content and presentation!.......2007-09-10
It's true that the tech editting was a bit below expectations (as mentioned in other reviews), but this is a bleeding edge book and I've come to exect that.
What you get here, however, is not watered-down or rushed content: this book has exhaustive coverage of Expression Web. Cheryl is extremely good at presenting complex material in an easy-to-understand manner.
Good Practical Guide To Microsoft Expression Web.......2007-08-03
Cheryl does not waste any time in getting right to the point in this easy to read book that is well done in thought and layout. (Minus the spelling errors that tend float around)
Cheryl lays out what you need for your web design clearly, how to find what your looking for, clear examples of how to put them together including extra goodies such as using PayPal and then finally putting the entire Web Design together and publishing your Web site.
Cheryl uses a good number of screen shots to show clear examples of exactly what she is showing in her book. I found these to be very useful in going over her well thought out book. She also address legal and usability issues which are often overlooked by many new web designers and shows somes of Cheryls years of experience as a Microsoft MVP coming to excellent use.
Last Cheryl does a excellent job of diving into the world of CSS and beyound and helped me out greatly as much of that was a bit of a mystery world and she makes it seem rather simple with her clear and concise explanation.
I would say this is a "must have" for anyone just getting into Microsoft's Expression Web, good for first time user or someone that has done some web design and is in need of a little brushing up. Cheryl has some great idea's that are easy to follow
Disappointing product.......2007-07-25
Frankly, this is a disappointing product. It does have numerous typos, as other reviewers have noted (confusing a backslash with a "normal" slash on page 126, telling us to double-click an entry on page 117 when a single-click is required, are two typical examples). However, the biggest shortfalls are its lack of explaining the foundations clearly, and its important omissions. The book tends to "explain" by just showing us the underlying code, which only minimally helps us to understand. We are not told how to import an existing Web site, or how to handle frames, just two important topics not dealt with here. Jim Cheshire's "Using Microsoft Expression Web" is far better, both in its clarity of explanations, and in its completeness.
Beyond Horrible.......2007-07-05
Absolutely do not waste your money on this book. Now, this lady is supposed to teach you how to design websites with this book. Then when you try to down load the excercises on her website the links don't work, or some of the excercises aren't in the right file. Most of the links are dead and then the contact link doesn't work. And she is supposed to be a professional site designer. Please! This book sucks. This book does nothing but have you reading code which is fine if you want to write code. The purpose of expression web is to cut down on writing html. If you are going to think about buying this book do yourself a favor and just flush your money down the toilet it'll save you a headache. After having to skip chapter 3 and 5 because of non working excercise links and not wanting to waste time "writing" the exercises using the tedious code I gave up and will keep searching for a decent book on expression

Customer Reviews:
Eye opener.......2007-09-05
This book gives you a wide variety of artists, styles & insight. There is information about each person & what they did to created their piece. Artworks range from crazy to beautiful to uncomfortable. Some of these things are amazing. It doesn't document every tiny detail of how it was done, but much of the information is there.
You can spend hours exploring & learning from this one.
Good Book!.......2007-02-01
This book gave me exactly what I needed, ideas for art and the methods used to create truly artistic pictures. While I am learning the basics of Paint Shop Pro XI, how to put color on paper, so to speak, doesn't help a lot with the creative process without much time consuming experimentation. This book helps shortcut the process for me.
Digital Arts.......2006-11-16
This book shows you the tools different graphic artists used to complete specific works they have done. It shows you key elements they used, but it does not say how they created their entire piece. It is kind of basic stuff, but it is a good reference book to learn or review some techniques. The programs most often discussed are photoshop and painter. This is a good book for graphic design students.
a book of artists' works, not a technique book.......2005-11-03
This book offers little in the way of actual things to do for your own digital painting or artwork, it is just a review of different digitial artists and some of their work. It is similar to the books such as "Works of 100 colored pencil artists", which is a showcase of colored pencil artists with a short bio and examles of their works, but very little in the way of actual techniques for your own work. This is similar to that, and, while there are some explanations given on some of the techniques used along with a short bio on each artist, it is mainly just a showcase of digital artists and their work. If you like a book for a coffee table and just enjoy looking at artwork, this is the book. However, if you want a more extensive book on actual work for digital work, you need to buy the technical books on the interrelationship between art and computer expertise.
In some ways, the title of the book is wrong, since some people may get the idea that this will be an instruction book on digital work in the arts.
The book is very well done, with good layout and the copies of the digital work is clear and colorwork is appropriate.
excellent.......2004-01-16
It is a excellent book to get some digital imaging ideal. Getting the ideal behind the image. Also a good starting point for digital imaging beginner(like me).Although the book cost much for me.

Academic Communities/Disciplinary Conventions
ASIN: 0123694051 |
Book Description
Exploring Engineering was developed to meet the need for a better way to introduce incoming engineering students to the fundamental concepts at the heart of all engineering disciplines. It was also created to show students in a vivid way the great array of opportunities and possibilities of todays engineering fieldsfrom classical mechanical engineering to bioengineering and mechatronics. This is the first text to introduce nearly all of the major engineering areas, and to do so with a strong interdisciplinary case study approach. This approach better prepares and enables students to draw upon knowledge not only from their own particular field of expertise, but also from related or even distantly related engineering and technical and scientific fields, allowing them to become more versatile within their future employment.
Exploring Engineering is flexible enough to offer a variety of approaches to the introduction of modern engineering for new students, while still providing the most important essentials that hold all engineering disciplines together, particularly the mathematical, quantitative basis of engineering as well as the modern computer tools that make todays engineering design so efficient and accurate.
* Introduces the fundamental physical, chemical, and material foundations for all engineering work, including motion, force, conservation of energy and matter
* Explains the workings of simple electrical circuits, computer logic, control and mechatronics, stress/strain diagrams, bioengineering, stoichiometry
* Offers applications of engineering ethicsusing an extended case study metaphor: the modern automobile
* Provides simple data spreadsheets and other analytical "tools of the trade" to introduce students to the concepts of theoretical and of empirical engineering
* Presents the engineering design process using examples and assignments specifically aimed at helping to guide students and instructor through a hands-on design project
* A companion web site will offer a complete solutions manual and a number of suggested head-to-head competitions for a final design project

The Encyclopedia of U-Boats: From 1904 to the Present
ASIN: 1591149673 |
Book Description
On 4 June 1944 the German submarine U-505 became the first man-of-war captured by the U.S. Navy in battle on the high seas since the War of 1812. Attacked by the American hunter-killer force Task Group 22.3 off the coast of West Africa, the 750-ton U-boat was forced to the surface after a fierce bombardment. Abandoned by the crew while partially afloat, it was boarded by American sailors and secretly towed to Bermuda. Renamed USS Nemo, it made a war bond subscription tour before docking to await scrapping. The book offers a vivid description of these events and continues the story by explaining how U-505 became a major attraction at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.
Author Jim Wise tells of the efforts of Dan Gallery, the commander of Task Group 22.3, to convince the Navy to transfer U-505's ownership to the museum in his native Chicago. Wise chronicles the boat's arduous journey down the St. Lawrence River and across three Great Lakes to the shores of Lake Michigan for restoration. He then offers a memorable description of the staggering engineering feat that moved the boat overland to an outdoor exhibit area at the museum, where it was opened to the public in 1954. By the turn of the century, museum executives determined that nearly fifty years of exposure to the elements and more than 24 million visitors had taken their toll. They raised millions of dollars to restore the U-boat and build an indoor site four stories below ground that the author calls an architectural wonder. In addition to the fully restored boat, there is an exhibit area filled with artifacts and interactive stations to give visitors a taste of what it was like for the crewmen in battle. Some two hundred photographs of the U-boat and exhibit are included in the book.
Customer Reviews:
U-505:The Final Journey.......2007-08-10
After visiting the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry, I was interested to firnd out more about the capture of the U-505. U-505:The Final Journey is well written and reviews the history of U-505 and its officers and crew setting the stage for its capture by Task Force 22.3. The background on Commander Robert Gallery who wanted to capture a U-Boat and how the US Navy accomplished it is amazing and good reading. The heroism of the sailors boarding the 505 and how they figured out how to keep from sinking and then making the sub seaworthy for the trip to Bermuda is most interesting and quite amazing. So is the story of how 505 ended up in Chicago. Beautifully produced, The Final Journey is a must for anyone interested in US Naval history.
Good resource.......2006-06-27
This account of the Battle of the Atlanctic provides valuable background about the situation for establishment of the submarine arm prior to WWII, and the political and scientific developments that had a such great influence on the outcome of the Battle. It could have benefited from more pictures and diagrams, but still well worth reading.
A Handsome, Well-Written Volume.......2005-10-28
The story of the U-505 has been told numerous times, but never quite like this. Author/historian Jim Wise has written an exceptional work - with a superb collection of photographs - that should be in the library of anyone interested in the Second World War.
The Life of a German Type IX U-Boat.......2005-06-16
The type IX U-Boat was the larger, long range boat developed by the German Navy for operations in more distant areas such as the American East and Gulf coasts. The U-505 built in Hamburg was launched on May 24, 1941. She was not a lucky boat. While she made several war patrols with modest success, she aborted several patrols to return to port with one kind of problem after another. She was so unlucky that on June 4th of 1944 (two days before D-Day) she was captured just off the coast of Africa. She was the first ship captured by the American Navy since the War of 1812.
After capture the U-505 was taken into the American Navy and made several tours to Atlantic and Gulf ports to promote the sale of War Bonds.
Finally she was towed three thousand miles to the mouth of the St. Lawrence, across four of the great lakes to Chicago. There she was made a part of the permanent display of the Museum of Science and Industry. Remodeled to war time condition, the U-505 now sits in a specially constructed building to create a U-Boat experience dedicated to the people who fought the Battle of the Atlantic.

Save Water And Still Have A Beautiful Yard.......2006-01-05
If you live in an arid area, remember that "there is only a certain amount of water in the world and they aren't making any more of it." An acre of grass takes 27,000 gallons of water a week to keep green. It's hard for some to give up that patch of green grass that America equates with leisure time and suburban living.
Having lived in Central Australia, I advocate for full desert landscaping using native plants along with exotics from dry countries.
Xeriscaping (water-wise planting) doesn't mean a yard that is a barren moonscape. Think of colorful crape myrtles, bougainvilleas, firebushes, palms, yuccas, and many more interesting plants. Artfully placed, they provide a green view and offset the gravel that replaces grass in a water saving landscape. Mulch everything to insulate the soil and keep moisture in the ground.

These are choices regarding how you think about yourself, your past and your future, how you take care of your body by the way you eat, exercise and relax, and how you relate to other people. In this book, readers will learn: how to break the habit of reinforcing the negatives in life; how to ensure your energy flows into action; how to reduce conflicts by separating "wants" from "non-negotiable needs'; how to let go of the past--and quit repeating it.

Customer Reviews:
Best mistake I ever made..........2006-03-15
I got the audio tapes of "Life By Design" many years ago by mistake. It was the best mistake I ever made. Now, some 20 years after my original exposure to the ideas in the book, I still practice the foundational truths that I learned then. I go back to them over and over. You can simplify life and the effort it takes to attain your goals. It's not magic, just good sense, and "Life By Design" is a great roadmap.
Not about digging, about LIVING!.......2002-12-27
This book doesn't waste the reader's time with theorizing over why certain life choices are made a certain way. There are plenty of books and counselors and therapists willing to do that! Instead, it provides a comprehensive set of skills and strategic approaches to intentional living. Ultimately, applying this material is up to the reader. But if you want to make the transition from reacting to circumstance to living intentionally, everything you need is in here, from getting clear on your values and purpose in life, to changing your habits so they support your values and purpose, to developing attitudes that give you needed resilience when life hands you a reversal, to cultivating a support system of friends and allies, to developing intimacy with your significant others, to making your contribution to a better world. If you're looking for depth, try looking inside. If you're looking for a way to improve the quality of your life and the quality of your choices, this book provides an excellent and comprehensive approach. These authors keep delivering quality material without the theorizing, explaining, defending and justifying that keeps people stuck in the 'why' mode, because they focus their writing and ideas on the 'how' mode of living.
Terrific guide to a better world, one person at a time!.......1999-07-04
Just saw a copy of this, and WOW! There are plenty of self help books, but this one starts and ends with the big picture and the difference that a life well lived can make! They cover all the essentials in an intelligently funny manner that should benefit just about everyone!

Book Description
Today's bathroom: function plus luxury! Today's bathroom is more than a functional, utilitarian space-it is also a sanctuary and private retreat. The bathroom receives more remodeling dollars than any other room in the house (except the kitchen). Today's bathroom is a center for both physical and mental relaxation, and IdeaWise: Bathrooms will show you how to get the most personal satisfaction from this all-important room. There are also good economic reasons for remodeling or adding a bathroom-a major bathroom project returns virtually its entire investment by adding value to your home. Written specifically for do-it-yourselfers, the book features large idea photos presented in case-study fashion. You'll learn all the background information needed to plan a DIY approach to each idea.
