This book is a fake!.......2007-10-01
As a physicist I am flabbergasted and slightly depressed by the success of this book. First of all this book presents as if they were equally certain some pieces of orthodox science together with some of the author's dubious speculations. The lay reader is not told which are which. Secondly, the author obviously has no knowledge of the actual history of physics and yet he shamelessly "describes" it to the reader.
Hawking seems to have gathered together all the bad cliches about various physical issues and has taken out all the valuable ideas. He explains nothing, he just asserts that "we physicists know that..., we physicists have demonstrated that...". I cannot see how anyone can actually learn anything about physics from this book, about why we know what we know. And yet, judging from the amount of praise this book receives, it seems that quite a lot of people have fallen under the spell that they have been allowed access to some secret. They haven't and I find this trickery immoral.
Quantum physics and astrophysics are really interesting. They don't deserve to be thrashed in this unashamed manner. If you want to learn something about physics, there are other books which do a much better job, for example Asimov's Atom: Journey Across the Subatomic Cosmos.
Author - a true genius.......2007-09-22
Stephen Hawking is a true genius. Although I don't understand everything he writes, all-in-all this book gives one the understanding of how wonderfully made the universe is.
Fascinating.......2007-08-24
I found this book to be ingenious yet accessible to the average reader, which is what I believe Hawking set out to accomplish. Great food for thought in my opinion.
TERRIBLE digital transfer by "Phoenix Audio".......2007-08-10
It's a great book by Hawking, but this product is just a reproduction of something by Hawking/Jackson that we already know is great. So what sort of job does this product do of delivering one of my favorite audio books? Not a very good one.
The original recording sounds fine, but this production from 2005 sounds like it was converted to a low bit rate at some point during editing, and probably had a poor noise removal job done as well. For the benefit of removing possibly a little weak static in the background, we get to listen to a robotic Jackson for 5 hours. It sounds similar to an early digital cell phone with a choppy feel and many T's and S's muffled.
There really isn't any reason I can see for this to not be a perfect reproduction of earlier digital versions. Old bootlegs floating about the internet sound better. Maybe "Phoenix Audio" should have just grabbed those to print, and left all of that tricky audio work to the more competent civilian sector.
A well written classic.......2007-08-01
I have a stack of these :The First Three Minutes: A Modern View of the Origin of the Universe,Cosmic Code and In Search/big Bang: /, so I can compare and contrast.
There is material on black holes here that isn't covered as well in the others. I still would wish that all these authors would put in more of the real equations and less of the dumbing down. One point is that people not able to understand this kind of book, probably won't understand no matter how simple you make the text. Maybe one should make effective use of your time in writing and concentrate on those who will understand and use the results.

Helped me more than anything.......2003-10-31
I had the opportunity to buy another book by this author several years but now regretfully passed and watched by investments go down the drain as I followed advice from another financial author.
Edelmans book helped me to recoup those losses and get back on track. I have since added "The Truth About Money" and "Ordinary People Extraordinary Wealth." I also recommend "The Road to Wealth" and "The Laws of Money" by Suze Orman, another credible financial author.
don't rush to do any of this.......2003-06-19
Ric still assumes you can get 10% on investments. Right. And your Enron retirement plan will keep you cozy until you're 99.
An insurance salesman's dream!.......2002-07-09
This book should have been titled "Why you need to overinsure yourself rather than plan for retirement!" Ric uses life insurance *AS* his retirement plan and recommends you maintain enough insurance to provide an INCOME to your family. Not just pay off your debts and provide some cushion for your family, but to actually LIVE off the income. Geez, no wonder insurance rates are sky high! I can see a larger policy for a working man with a wife and young children to support -- so that his wife can have a few years to find her own way. But this man is advocating using life insurance for something it was never intended to be used for.
On top of that, he completely discounts just how much all this life and disability insurance costs. He maintains that if you can purchase a VCR and TV, you can someone find the money each month for all this insurance. Well let me tell you, I did just a basic search for the numbers he recommended for my family and we would pay out OVER $500 a month just for insurance! No thank you. We'll stick with our meager $100,000 whole life policy and the term policy for paying off the mortgage.
And that's another thing! I've never read a financial planning book that advocates not paying off your mortgage! His entire chapter about that was totally contrary to ALL the other advice out there and I couldn't disagree more. One should maintain the status quo, pay your debts, save, invest, and then pay off the morgage! Provide for your own retirement and stop using life insurance as your retirement plan.
Book achieves its goals.......2001-11-30
This book accomplishs its limited goal and does it well. To say the book is short on detail or substance misses the point of the book. Ric's other books do that. This book is meant to be a quick and basic primer on what people can do now, and it's not meant to be more. Furthermore, to say the author has questionable credentials is amusing. His firm was ranked by Bloomberg as the 5th-largest independent financial planning firm in the nation, with 5,400+ clients and $1.7 billion in client assets. Please, if you're going issue a poor review, make sure its not just a shallow and sleazy ranting.
Well written book, gives great advice.......2001-11-27
With the evnets of 9/11, many of us don't know where to turn regarding our finances. This book will guide you with great advice. I'm glad I purchased it and will advise you to do the same. An easy read!!!

Book Description
A move toward more flexible, sustainable agricultural practices is increasingly being seen as the way to address or avoid environmental and economic problems associated with existing, predominantly intensive, farming systems. Through case studies taken from around the world, this book examines the implications of adopting more ecologically sound agricultural practices, at both individual farmer and larger-scale agro-ecosystems levels. The emphasis of the book is on human and social aspects, rather than on agronomic or economic considerations. The authors focus on the learning processes necessary to initiate and to facilitate learning through participatory approaches and appropriate institutional support and policy structure.
Customer Reviews:
A much welcomed volume on sustainable agriculture.......1999-09-02
This much welcomed volume begins with the disquieting fact that high-energy, chemical-input and intensive farming continues as the dominant model for agricultural development, with all its increasingly unacceptable hazards to human health, ecosystems and the landscape. As an alternative, the book looks to the development of more sustainable, productive and less destructive forms of resource use. However, this depends not only on the redesigning of the agronomic and technical make-up of farming but also on the development of organisational and human capacities aimed at maintaining and enhancing the natural resource base. Essential to this task is building of improved institutional frameworks for facilitating learning about the potentialities and difficulties of sustainalbe agricultural and environmental practice, as well as new methodologies geared towards understanding and improving forms of collective action. The various chapters - some build upon case studies, other addressing policy intervention and outcomes, and yet others exploring underlying theoretical issues - tothether add up to a formidable collection that explores the many analytical and practical problems entailed. Although the authors differ somewhat in their treatment of the notion of 'sustainability' - a slippery concept in the best of writings - one finishes reading the book convinced that here we have a work that makes a valuable contribution to the general debates on sustainable resource use by its emphasis on the emergent properties of collective decision-making. Many of the contributors have longstanding experience of participatory types of interventions and research at the level of farming populations: they now turn their experience and expertise to deal with more complex issues associated with the roles of 'local' and 'external' actors in the management of larger scale agro-ecological systems. The book identifies social constructivism as the epistemological basis for addressing social learning processes and organisational practices central to managing sustainability, since actors often disagree over the definition of the problems for solution and the means to be used. In other words we are confronted by 'multiple realities' which militate against concerted action aimed at specific objectieves. The building of bridges between these differing social worlds rests then on an awareness of how social coalitions and common points of view are and can be constructed socially. While participatory approaches recognise the necessity of such 'social' work, it has only recently that the theoretical potential of social constructivism has been taken up systematically in applied fields such as agricultural extension. The present volume represents a clear affirmation of the usefulness of this approach. The chapters of the volume are grouped into five parts. Part I consists of an introductory chapter which provides a general theroretical and thematic overview of the book. This is followed by two other contributions - one which identifies and criticizes policy options for supporting sustainalbe agriculture, and the other which offers a stimulating elucidation of the underlying philosophical and theoretical foundations of a new social-learning approach that addresses the issues of 'facilitating learning through making things visible, helping people to reconstruct realities through experimentation, discourse, observation and meaningful experience' (Woodhill and Röling, p. 68), and it points to the importance of creating 'new platforms' of understanding between the various (potential conflicting) actors necessary for the successful management of ecosystems. Part II explores the dynamics of environmental policy implementation and farmer responses in three contrasting European cases: Switzerland, Greece and the Netherlands. The examples differ in the extent ot which farmers were involved or involved themselves in the development of these policy frameworks. Part III concentrates on issues relating to how farmers learn about and implement measures towards sustainalbe agriculture. Here the examples and issues are taken up range widely: from Europe (four Dutch experimental projects dealing with sustainable arable agriculture, and eco-farming in Germany), Asia (problems of integrated pest mananagement in Indonesia, and lessons learnt from Asian user-responsive, participatory agricultural research) and Australia (a government initiated participatory learning and research programme aimed at improved fallow management). Part IV moves the discussion to consider the processes involved in 'platform' building at rural and larger agro-ecological systems or water catchment levels. The chapters focus on the building of learning 'communities' concerned with sustainable agricultural practice. Contributing chapters are from the USA (methods and experiences of THe W.K. Kellogg Foundations's integrated farming systems programme), Australia (Landcare movement) and the Netherlands ('nature' policy). The concluding chapter (part V) offers a useful analytical overview of hte many interrelated arguments presented earlier. It underlines that the main contirbution of the book lies in its empahsis on 'what ecologically sound practice implies for the human actors involved'', - not only farmers but land users and other stakeholders interested in the countryside, and its analyses how conditions for generating favourable change might be created. Yet as the authors persuasively argue, the critical conditions are not, as economists are prone to suggest, primarily related to pricing and fiscal inducements; but rather they result from the complex social interplay of 'policy, institutional and behavioural change'. This book, then, deserves to be read and its arguments assessed not only by practising communication, participatory research and agro-ecological specialists, but also by all those interested in rural change and development. Scholars and students of sociology, anthropology and political economy would, I believe, particularly benefit from plunging somewhat more into the 'worlds of practice'.
Book Description
The passage from 'solid ' to 'liquid ' modernity has created a new and unprecedented setting for individual life pursuits, confronting individuals with a series of challenges never before encountered. Social forms and institutions no longer have enough time to solidify and cannot serve as frames of reference for human actions and long-term life plans, so individuals have to find other ways to organise their lives. They have to splice together an unending series of short-term projects and episodes that don 't add up to the kind of sequence to which concepts like 'career ' and 'progress ' could meaningfully be applied. Such fragmented lives require individuals to be flexible and adaptable - to be constantly ready and willing to change tactics at short notice, to abandon commitments and loyalties without regret and to pursue opportunities according to their current availability. In liquid modernity the individual must act, plan actions and calculate the likely gains and losses of acting (or failing to act) under conditions of endemic uncertainty.Zygmunt Bauman 's brilliant writings on liquid modernity have altered the way we think about the contemporary world. In this short book he explores the sources of the endemic uncertainty which shapes our lives today and, in so doing, he provides the reader with a brief and accessible introduction to his highly original account, developed at greater length in his previous books, of life in our liquid modern times.
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant.......2007-05-27
"Liquid Times" offers a brilliant series of thoughts about postmodern life by master philosopher/sociologist Zygmunt Bauman. This accessible book succinctly introduces the reader to Mr. Bauman's theories about the passage from the "solid" phase of welfare statism to the "liquid" phase of neoliberalism which have rightly earned the author international acclaim and recognition, particularly among activists in the anti-globalization movement. In this highly rewarding book, Mr. Bauman shares some of his knowledge gained from over eighty years of high-level scholarship and diverse life experiences, rewarding the reader with a number of unique, compelling and penetrating insights into our postmodern condition.
Mr. Bauman contends that as multinational corporations have wrested economic power from state control, individuals have born the cost of change: the evisceration of the social safety net compels individuals to sink or swim. Mr. Bauman describes how urban elites have become disconnected from the working class, residing in tightly-controlled enclaves of security while the masses have been left behind to fend for themselves in slums or crime-ridden shantytowns. As globalization depletes resources and produces prodigious amounts of human waste, the author believes that refugee camps represent only the most severe manifestation of the permanency of transience, as unwanted populations are forever stranded in a 'nowhereville' of non-citizenship.
Indeed, Mr. Bauman asserts that the state finds newfound legitimacy in law enforcement and militarization. While the reality of increasing economic insecurity has compelled many individuals to assuage their anxieties by increasing discipline over mind, body and physical environment, the state incarcerates those who are unable to adopt and attacks others who might threaten us. In this manner, the state serves the interests of the powerful by protecting property rights; meanwhile, the social rights that are most needed by the poor are almost never seriously considered.
In the final chapter, Mr. Bauman discusses how consumerism offers individuals the illusory utopia of the endless pursuit of self-realization. Mr. Bauman contrasts the "hunter" who lives within this fantasy with the "gardener" who attempts to cultivate a more humane and sustainable world for all. Discovering that the utopian concept is today most often seized upon by marketers than by idealists, the author brilliantly connects the seduction of the market economy with public passivity and a general lack of outrage within the industrialized nations for what the advent of corporate rule has come to mean for most of the world's people.
I give this masterwork the highest possible recommendation.
Book Description

In Power in Times of Uncertainty: Training Your Mind to Change Your Life, Dr. Julie Petrella uncovers a timeless and universal process that causes people to feel either powerless or powerful in times of uncertainty. Dr. Petrella explains the two "mind modes" that people experience in times of uncertainty, and she provides a "training regimen" to put your mind, and thus your life, in a position of power.
Customer Reviews:
Direct, concise, and right on target!.......2006-08-25
When I first saw Dr. Petrella's book, I noticed it was somewhat small. (A feature I like in books.. a quick read that doesn't take forever to get to the point...) Then I realized as I was reading it that it is so PACKED with information that I was then amazed at how she managed to keep it so concise and still keep it meaningful. Also, Dr. Petrella manages to link all the concepts together so well that it just makes so much sense.. and then you wonder "Wow - she's RIGHT.. why didn't I think of that!?" Or, you actually visualize yourself making the changes necessary to overcome your fear.
As an Instructor and Instructional Designer in a fortune 500 company, I know that these elements are the key to helping people bring about change in their behaviors. I will recommend this book to my organization, as well as other training colleagues because it facilitates change and flexibility... two necessary things in every business in today's market.
Great Read.......2005-03-07
Anyone that reads this book will take something from it. All walks of life and ages would benifit from this to the point book.
Gilligan can be Saved!.......2005-01-25
I had the pleasure to discover Dr. Julie Petrella's "Power in Times of Uncertainty" - and realized that we could have ended Gilligan's Island after one episode...
Why do the personal and professional lives of some people appear to come straight out of an episode of Gilligan's Island? You know the story - the crew of the Minnow are stranded on an island as the result of a major storm. In each episode, they come up with some wild idea on how to get off the island. Predictably, however, something always goes wrong, and the castaways end up back on the island.
I have seen hundreds of these people during the span of my career as a staff employee and manager in small, mid-size, and mega-size companies. These folks (and I have been one) wander around moaning and grumbling about the "unfairness" of their current situation. If you ask these "powerless" folks what they are doing to get out of the situation, they usually respond "I haven't done anything because I will get fired, have too much time invested, don't have the time, have tried before, failed, and don't want to be burned twice, etc."
These "lost" people have something in common with my golf game. I have lost so many golf balls in the woods that that I can tell you the ages of all the squirrels. What do these two seemingly not related situations have in common? Both are the result of individuals focusing on the uncertainty of a situation versus focusing on the desired outcome of the situation. Fear is a factor. Instead of concentrating on the fairway, the concentration centers on the water or the woods. Not surprising, you hit what you aim at just about every single time. It is true in golf and true in life!
Dr. Petrella's book "Power in Times of Uncertainty" is an excellent tool for individuals to train their mind so that they can "hit the ball straight" in their careers and to rescue yourself from your own personal Gilligan's Island. "Power" provides a very simple-to-use blue print that explains the root cause of feelings of uncertainty and fear. The book also lays out how to recognize the strengths of certainty and confidence so that you don't wander off into that "helpless" mode again.
The bottom line is that I highly recommend this book. It contains so many great ideas on how to control your own destiny (that are so simple in their essence) from a mental standpoint, that you will not want to put it down - even after reading the last page. On a side note, it also contains some really great quotes. Dr. Petrella gets a "thumbs up" from this reader for an excellent book and for knocking two or three strokes off my golf game!

Book Description
The essays in this volume all originated at the 2001 conference of the International Society for the Study of Time. The theme 'Time and Uncertainty' sounds redundant, but the contributions try to come to terms with the irreducible openness of time and the impermanence of life. The essays from various disciplines have been grouped around 'fracture and rupture' (grappling with time and uncertainty as a breach) and 'rapture and structure (solving uncertainty into pattern).

Product Description
Adulthood is taken for granted. It connotes the end of childhood, the resolution to the storm and stress period of adolescence. This conception is strongly entrenched in the sociology of youth and the sociology of the life course as well as in the policy arena. At the same time, adulthood itself remains unarticulated; journey s end remains conceptually fixed and theoretically uncontested. Adulthood, then, is both central to the social imagination and neglected as an area of sociological investigation, something that has been noted by sociologists over the last four decades. Going beyond the overwhelmingly psychological literature, this book draws on original qualitative research and theories of social recognition and thus presents a first step towards filling an important gap in our understanding of the meaning of adulthood.
