5 out of 5 stars Finally !!.......2007-06-06

Great Book !!...no nonsense, step by step guide that uses conventional drafting methods and reference diagrams to explain what you NEED to know with out all of the ultra technical junk found in most CAD text. It provides the reader with the information needed to work in a REAL office in the REAL world.

5 out of 5 stars The Must-Have Desk Accessory.......2007-06-05

Whether you're still in school or out in the work force, this book is a must-have resource for designers who may need a refresher course in CAD from time to time. The easy-to-read graphics, thorough index and step-by-step instructions allow both experienced users and/or newcomers to navigate successfully through the CAD program.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Getting Started Book.......2007-06-01

AutoCAD is clearly the industry standard computer aided design software. If you type AutoCad into the search engine at Amazon you get 4,306 books about it. How do you possibly pick one out of this many. Or perhaps a better question is why pick this one.

First, this book is specifically oriented to architects and interior designers. That's what the examples show, that's the terminology used. You are not looking at gears or airplane wings.

Second, this book is aimed at the beginner. It starts with comparing AutoCad to conventional paper and T-Square drafting. It compares AutoCAD commands to common drafting implements like a pencil or compass.

Third, it is rather independent of the AutoCAD version. The concepts being taught here are the basic ones, so you can use the book with whatever version you have.

Fourth, it is a very visually oriented book. It has you quickly working on drawings, showing you in illustrations what you should be seeing on the screen.

Fifth, as a basis for starting your drawings the companion web site for the book has perhaps as much information as is contained in the book.

Conclusion. This is an excellent book to use to get started with AutoCAD, especially for architects and interior designers.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, an AutoCAD book that is written for designers.......2007-04-08

Clear illustrations and easy to follow step-by-step instructions make it easy to master AutoCAD commands with this book. Often, a single page covers an entire command (in words and illustrations) which makes it easy to learn the first time or refresh my memory.

I'm glad I found an AutoCAD book that does not require me to be a programmer to learn this software. I'll keep this one next to my computer for quick reference.

5 out of 5 stars An Indispensable Resource.......2007-04-02

Digital Drawing for Designers is an excellent resource for students and professionals alike. Seidler's generous use of graphics coupled with concise and easy-to-read text make mastering AutoCad easy, boiling down what can be a difficult program into practical lessons that address the needs of designers at every level.

4 out of 5 stars On time and in perfect condition. .......2007-01-08

I received the book when expected and in perfect conditions. Very interesting book for a very reasonable price.

5 out of 5 stars An architect's treasure.......2005-08-17

This book has outstanding breadth of information for system architecture. Some details are quite basic, while others are quite indepth. Overall though, what's most important is that the book is very well written and serves its purpose well. It has many excellent strategies, along with a comprehensive feature list of most J2EE projects.

Definately a 5 star.

5 out of 5 stars Concepts applicable in J2EE as well as .NET.......2004-10-18

I develop applications using J2EE and .NET. I found that most concepts found in this book are equally applicable to the .NET arena as well. Good work.

5 out of 5 stars Practical for beginners.......2004-10-14

I'm a Junior J2EE Technical Architect and I just finish reading your book. It's really interesting and instructive. It helps me a lot on my project planning.

1 out of 5 stars Certainly NOT the J2EE Bible !!!.......2004-10-09

This book covers many topics, unfortunately it does not go into great detail on any of them. I don't know what the author was trying to do with this book, but I do know that this is not the new J2EE bible as some of the other reviewers have stated. Some of the topics covered have nothing to do with J2EE, they are project management topics.

If you are looking for a real J2EE book look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Comprehensive J2EE Review, and More!.......2007-09-24

I primarily purchased this book for Review for SCEA exam.

It provides a complete review of Architecture, J2EE Overview, Documentation, Design Patterns, Security, Internationalization, Protocols, and impotantly, Case Study.

Reading these chapters and working the Case Study, helped me understand the entire overall concept as well as, enough details so I could understand my short commings. Therefore the references listed in this book to other books with more details are very useful.

I think that this book is very important for the technical people getting ready for SCEA test, but it is MORE:

1. It can be great help for managers to get an excellent understanding, and
2. It is also great help for detail code developers to get a good taste of the overall and higher level view of the entire J2EE!

I hope that the authors are working on the next revision.

1 out of 5 stars Too Expensive.......2007-07-29

Too Expensive for such a short book. Its like a review of a real book.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful.......2007-01-15

If your primary objective is obtaining the SCEA certification, this book is a powerful guideline for passing the SCEA exam. It contains interesting tips that can help you.
However, if your objective is collecting information about take architecture decisions, you must read more specifics books.

4 out of 5 stars It is greate book.......2006-11-11

It is very good book for the people who would like to understand the exam's subject.

2 out of 5 stars Very simple book.......2006-11-03

I purcahse this book with some other expectations.
The book cover all the subject in the exam but in a poorly way.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good book for the PHP certification........2007-10-04

This books covers a good amount of the topics on the certification, and I would definitely recommend it for the certification and general PHP knowledge. You will probably need more than this to pass the certification. I would recommend taking the online practice tests from the Zend certification site as well.

3 out of 5 stars Not good enough for preparing PHP5 certification.......2007-06-23

This book provides many perspectives on PHP5 certification. However, as a certification preparing guide, I don't think it is good one to pass the exam just by reading this book.

First, it does not have questions at the end of each chapter to evaluate how well the reader learned from the material, as many other exam preparing guides do. It is hard for me to imagine how does the real exam go without those questions.

Second, it has many errors in this book. Some of them could mis-lead you to get wrong concepts of PHP. I agree with Brian, the previous reviewer, beware of using this book. Once you felt anything confused, check out other books or write some codes to test what is the right concept you should learn.

Finally, it does not mention any information about how to connect / retrieve / update information from / to databases with a PHP script. It does have a chapter called "Database Programming", but all it has are only the introduction of SQL statements. I doubt if we don't need to prepare that part for PHP certification.

However, it provides some chapters for XML, web services, and security, which are valuable to refer to. It brought my attention to find more resources to read for those parts.

If you prefer a book that mentions key points of exam without many details, this book is the one you should read; otherwise, pick another one will be a better idea for you.

3 out of 5 stars A good review, but not in-depth by any means..........2007-05-01

If you have already been using PHP5 on a regular basis, this book is a good source of review material but doesn't necessarily cover very much new material. It is, I suppose, a good foundation to study for the test, but it *most definitely* is not the only book that you're going to want to read before taking the Zend Certification test.

I also noticed a lot of errors in this book, so beware of that. I recommend the book by Mike Zandstra PHP 5 Objects, Patterns, and Practice in addition to this one, especially if you are moving from PHP4 to PHP5.

4 out of 5 stars Very pleased.......2007-01-09

This is a very good study guide for the Zend PHP5 exam. Touches on quiet a few of the more subtle subjects in PHP5 and has a very nice learning curve. It's not recommended for the beginners and has to be read alongside other materials (be it online or offline) for maximum efficiency. It's not the definitive PHP study guide and you shouldn't rely on it alone for the exam. Great value for money!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars too many errors.......2007-07-23

The book has a lot of errors, but is actually good in some areas. The CDROM is unbelievable. It is as if it were a first draft of the book. The practice exams on the CD make no sense at times and are worthless as a study aid.

4 out of 5 stars very good book.......2006-11-16

The overall quality of the book is very good. The JMS chapter is particularly terrific.

1 out of 5 stars a bit informatin here and there.......2006-08-28

The book has some useful information about J2EE here and there, but since this is a book serves a guidance for the SCEA exam, most of the contents are either too shallow or irrelevant for that purpose. Don't expect that you can rely on this book only and pass the exam.

There are some errors in the self check questions, but most of the time, the answers given are the oppsite of the correct answers to the question asked and I believe these are editing problems.

1 out of 5 stars Copied from Sun Documentation.......2006-05-25

The statements in the book reads as a SUN document. So if you dont want to take the trouble to sit in front of a computer and search through all the links for certification objectives in SUN website, you can purchase this book.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly written book with many redundant and confusing info.......2006-01-05

I am using this book for J2EE study. After reading chapter 1 and 2, I have to say this is one of the worst tech books I ever read. The materials are harshly composed, often without a consistent and clear framework on various topics (what an irony on a book about a framework). From time to time, I have the impression that the authors just pulled some paragraphs from various articles and piled them together. This gives me the further impression that the authors don't really understand those subjects well enough to distill the essentials out and present them in an organized manner. Unless you are already an expert in those subjects, you will find yourself confused by this book and walk away with more questions than before.

Definitely not recommended for anybody.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book For Beginners.......2007-08-23

This book was real helpful. I really didn't know much about the topics so I found it a good introduction. If you are even semi-knowledgeable about this area, I would recommend another book.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Best.......2007-02-03

Best of the best of all other books i've read about PHP Security. Easily comprehensible (even for a frenchy like me), no bla-bla, explanations which are not limited to a surface layer but go deeply under the hood (Paranoid attitude says Milos), examples of code which are limpid, simple to understand, include, and implement ...
The author have knowledge of the inner working procedure of PHP, and it makes the difference with others books or compilation of articles found on the Net. Yes, this book is thin, yes, it has only 10 chapters, and yes, i have found immediately what i was waiting for a long time.
Buy it, steal it, hack it, but if you write PHP app, you must read this book.

Four thumbs up (the hands and the feet)

5 out of 5 stars A Must For PHP Developers!.......2006-03-18

This book is excellent. Paranoid attitude of an author really makes you think. I can honestly say that I will use over half of the ways written in this book (and you all know that there is not a lot books like that on the market for PHP).

Two thumbs up!

5 out of 5 stars Short, fast, and to-the-point (no fluff and I love it).......2005-12-06

This book isn't large at all, 10 chapters and thin (called a nano-book), so you may feel like you won't learn much - WRONG! I just got this book last week and I swear, this is one of the only books I've ever seen that gets to the point instantly.

As for the example code - fast, small, and no wasted time declaring variables or basic stuff.

Don't get this book if you're just learning PHP - get this book after writing your first PHP forms!!!

You know you don't want to reinvent the wheel (or worse, a flat tire), so you look to Design Patterns--the lessons learned by those who've faced the same problems. With Design Patterns, you get to take advantage of the best practices and experience of others, so that you can spend your time on...something else. Something more challenging. Something more complex. Something more fun.

Head First Design Patterns Poster is a companion to Head First Design Patterns. It summarizes visually, 16 of the most common design patterns including Adapter, Command, Composite Decorator, Observer, Proxy, State, Singleton, Strategy, and more. Each pattern includes a handy page reference to both Head First Design Patterns and the "Gang of Four" text, the canonical description of the pattern, and a visual guide designed (and inspired by the examples in Head First Design Patterns) to jog your memory of the objects, classes, and their relationships.

In addition, the poster includes the "best of" the Head First "Guide to Better Living with Patterns," including how to read a patterns catalog, the power of a shared vocabulary and annihilating evil with anti-patterns.

Visually appealing and truly useful, Head First Design Patterns Poster contains what you need to know at a glance. Head First Design Patterns and this companion poster are a great combination that will load patterns into your brain in a way that sticks.

5 out of 5 stars The only book to read to learn what an Architect does.......2005-12-07

Do you know what an architect does? In the programming world, this title Architect is defined in many different ways, some that are too low level that they are really just designers, and not architects, in the traditional sense of the word. An Architect not only looks at technologies and decides which will work best for their project, but they must also define process and standards. They must understand about human behavior, build teams, and learn to learn quickly. There are many different Architectural models out there that many aren't aware of like the Zachman Framework or 4+1 Architect.

But most think an architect just draws UML collaboration diagrams.

This is the first time I have read a book on being an architect that surpassed my definitions of what an architect is. I want to be an architect and this book has taught me much more than I could have thought of.

There are a few rare breed of books that are the top of its class, this book is one of them. If you dream of becoming an Architect then you must buy this book.

2 out of 5 stars Inappropriate analogies for software development.......2004-09-20

While I admit to occasionally using the phrase "in the trenches" to describe software development, I generally consider military analogies to be inappropriate descriptors of how software is created. A military organization is composed of a rigid command hierarchy where orders are not to be questioned. No software development shop could ever be run in this manner. Military subordinates can be screamed at, ridiculed and within general guidelines that are sometimes exceeded, abused. Once again, that strategy does not work in the business world.
The worst military analogy offense in the book is chapter ten, "Psychological Warfare." While keeping a team functional using psychological techniques is a well-known tactic, the means of psychological warfare are completely different. The authors admit this when in the chapter they utter the sentence; "Mastery of these techniques should provide tools for effective persuasion in both group situations and face-to-face interactions." There are many problems in that sentence. An argument that techniques used to psychologically weaken an enemy in warfare will prove effective in working with team members in a business setting is absurd. Also, there is the key word "should", a weak word indicating that the authors are not convinced that these tactics will work.
This absurdity also appears on the back cover in the form of the blurb, "With hands-on exercises, real-life war stories and a take-no-prisoners attitude, `Software Architect Bootcamp, Second Edition', won't just help . . . " I have no idea how the authors of this book conduct their businesses, but in the development teams I have worked with, that kind of tactic destroys the consensus necessary for people to work together effectively. In fact, I have no idea what a "take-no-prisoners attitude" is supposed to mean in a software development environment.
While I found the military wording to be an unnecessary distraction, there is some good advice in the book. Using architecture in the same sentence as software is a relatively new phenomenon. Recently, the complexity of applications has grown to the point where developers have split into different areas. There are still people who write the code, but now there are others whose fulltime job is to develop and manage the overall structure of the application. These people, commonly called software architects, need to be trained in ways completely different from the code writers. While they need to learn how to put software components together, they also need to be trained in how to articulate their vision and convince people by rational argument. The authors cover the different aspects of software architecture and end each chapter with a set of essay questions that are partially answered.
I really have ambivalent feelings about this book; it does contain a great deal of useful information regarding software architecture. However, the absurd analogies weaken it when compared to others, so that is why I only give it two stars. I would not use it to train software architects.

3 out of 5 stars Very uneven.......2004-03-25

The book starts out great, talking about the architect role and what an architect should and shouldn't do. After a dozen pages or so, it dives into a prolonged and repetitive discussion of COM+ vs CORBA, mislabeled as "Basic Training". Towards the end of the book, the author returns to relevant subjects and makes many excellent observations on the human factors to consider when doing architecture work.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute "must-have" instructional and reference.......2004-03-07

Collaboratively written by two experts in the field (Raphael Malveau and Thomas J. Mowbray), and now in an updated and significantly expanded second edition, Software Architect Boot Camp is a clear, concise, and no-nonsense manual to learning how to devise practical solutions to common challenges, avoid costly mistakes, as well as balance costs versus needs as a software architect. Individual chapters cogently address choosing the right architectural model for one's project; applying abstraction; refactoring; architectural proto-typing; coordinating effectively with project managers and teams; managing a professional software architect career, and a great deal more. Software Architect Book Camp is an absolute "must-have" instructional and reference for any practicing or aspiring software architect.

4 out of 5 stars An overview of the field of software architecture.......2004-02-22

Judging by the title of this book, it should contain topics that represent the basic knowledge required from a software engineer must be aware of regardless of the role he plays -- software architect, designer, implementer. Indeed, this book covers topics like overview of the history of the software architecture discipline, major technologies at play, software development lifecycle, elements of software design, an extensive advise on how to handle team development risks, software design process, different aspects in the process of defining architecture, psychological techniques of survival in organization. The book is written with a ***distributed system architect*** in mind.

This book covers well the field of managing software complexity through modeling and development processes; it talks about history of different approaches to architecting and designing complex systems, about managing team development, communication, organizational risks, etc. Most of the information in this book *is* common sense and must be known to any critically thinking mature developer. I found especially interesting the information on evolution of the architectural thought.

The book has a number of shortcoming. In many places the presentation of material is sketchy and **quite boring**. Authors either skipped completely or dedicated just a few words to some topics, while they spent 20 times of that on the others. For example, the authors dedicated almost 20 pages to UML; at the same time I could not find any decent reference to RUP. The book often forces the reader to refocus, although all of the information presented in it is on the topic.

After browsing the book it is not hard to imagine the authors screaming, "It's a war out there!! If you don't buy this book, your suffering will be enormous!" :). This probably explains the chapter names: Military History, Software Architecture: Going To War, Software Architecture: Drill School. Other chapters have equally obscure names: Software Architecture: Intelligence Operations (the chapter talks about managing information), Communications Training (communicating architectural and design concepts, UML), etc. On a serious note, I have found all this not very helpful and quite annoying.

If you participate in architectural and project management activities in your organization, you should be aware of the most material covered in this book. Certain chapters could be helpful to a manager as well. This is unfortunate that the authors have failed to make the book more entertaining and readable.

5 out of 5 stars More stuff less chaff !!.......2004-07-28

Consider this - Web Services and SOAP is perhaps the only recallable evolution of technology that has witnessed the single largest involvement of standards bodies and industry bellwethers. The result? A puzzling plethora of proffered protocols that continues to confuse both sideliners and early adopters every day.

While managers are finding it increasingly difficult to understand the direction, developers are craving for clarity, consistency and a unified approach for WS adoption. "Give me the tools" they cry every day, while they keep adding to their "To Read" list a handful of new acronyms every week. The big question is, when can we build Rome, if at all?

With a gentle and brief (thank god!) introduction to underlying concepts such as SOAP, XML and UDDI, authors start talking about broader concerns - conversation, transaction, security, workflow, QoS and everything in between. While accentuating nuances of evolving standards and guessing the future trends, authors offer strategies, patterns, and tips on pitfalls to avoid. They skirt around the political interoperability issues around J2EE and .NET and focus purely on the standards. Architect's Note included at the end of every chapter makes title justified.

An implementation of WS-based ordering system presented as a case study concludes the book by bringing it all together through excellent step-by-step approach.

Although almost a year old, this book can be a survival guide for people in the trenches and the ROI-Savvy managers as well. It helps you tell the wheat from the chaff.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent overview.......2004-07-12

A great guide to designing and implementing web services and the common challenges and pitfalls that can be found along the way.

Examples, patterns and case study provide excellent illustration while the subject matter is delivered in a consistent and surprisingly easy to read manner.

I'd recommend this book to anyone that wants to find out the ins and outs of providing web-services, rather than developing a simple web service for their own benefit - most .NET books can deal with that in a couple of pages.

Buy this book to dig deeper and find out about the issues that you should be considering.

Enjoy

2 out of 5 stars Save your money.......2004-07-11

This book isn't much better than freely available online documents on the same subjects. The book suffers from the usual problems of a book with too much level content and no practical hands-on information -- Architecture with out practical solution or a prototype model is constructing a building with out foundation. The authors explained individual topics to the extent that it is even confusing. I found this is the last book to be used for quick reference. This book is quite useless to me and I am a googling around for better information.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of money.......2004-06-23

I bought this book with lot of hopes, all I got is a JUNK. This book is nothing but a copy of specs obtained from OACIS and W3C. If you think about on implementing a WORKING Web services architecture using Java or .NET, then all you find is ZERO content. There is no working real-world architecture or implementation example discussed in this book. All the chapters are disconnected.

Waste of money.

5 out of 5 stars Best coverage on the topic.......2004-04-07

Over the past year, I have read quite a few books on Web Services, some good, others not so good... but this book really stands out.
The concepts were covered in sufficient details and in a very informal manner. It gives you a very good idea what you would need to consider when deciding to implement a SOA solution in your organization.
