Book Description
There are many books that discuss distillation, but there is only one that concentrates on giving readers practical guidelines for operation, troubleshooting and control. This is that book. Its contents revolves around over 300 actual case histories of distillation problems that occurred in the past. Each problem and its solution are briefly described, and the lessons learned are molded into the practical guidelines that make up the book. Carefully focused, the book shows you how over 90% of all column malfunctions occurred in the past, how they were solved, and how to prevent them in the future. Starting with column internals and their malfunctions, it progresses to installation, commissioning, startup and normal operation before surveying the auxiliary system and the column automatic controls--how they should be, how they can go wrong, and how you can repair them. This book offers the best available compendium of Do's and Don'ts, good practices, and guidelines for trouble-free design, operation and troubleshooting for inlets and outlets; distributors; avoiding tray damage; installation; commissioning and startup techniques; column flood and efficiency testing; pressure, temperature and boilup control; and many more.
Customer Reviews:
Good reference .......2007-06-01
I found this a very good reference on distillation, and a worthwhile resource on the PE exam. It however, as expected, assumes you understand interphase mass transfer and distillation theory.
A must for people in any phase of distillation field.......2002-01-03
This is the more complete book on practical aspects of distillation and absorption. From design (together with the companion book Distillation Design) to startup and troubleshoot. The last subject is also covered by other books, relating to the subject himself, but on distillation and absorption columns this is the only book not out-of-print; note that it covers also mechanical aspects usually fund only on Best Prectices by Engineering and Contracting Company.

Book Description
The up-to-date edition of the classic guide—from leading experts in structural stability theory and research
First published in 1960, the Guide to Stability Design Criteria for Metal Structures is the reference of choice for civil and structural engineers seeking reliable, in-depth coverage of stability problems and research. This extensively revised Fifth Edition bridges theory and practice to offer simplified and refined procedures both for design and for the assessment of design limitations, as well as detailed guidance on design specifications, codes, and standards concerning the stability of metal structures.
Written by members of Structural Stability Research Council task groups and other specialists, all material has been updated to reflect recent developments in each subject area. The Fifth Edition features eight new chapters covering the latest procedures in horizontal curved steel I-girders, composite columns and structural systems, stability of angle members, bracing, frame stability, doubly curved shells and shell-like structures, stability under seismic loading, and stability analysis by the finite element method.
Complete with over 100 new illustrations, plus references, technical memoranda, and name and subject indexes, the Guide to Stability Design Criteria for Metal Structures, Fifth Edition is ready to go to work for a new generation of structural and civil engineers in their daily practice.
Customer Reviews:
Great Sequel to the 3rd Edition - Very Practical.......2007-01-06
Galambo's writing style and use of plots at the appropriate detail make this a very useful book. It is directed toward a mature readership fairly aquainted with existing standards such as the AISC. The chapters on plate girders and box girders are exceptionally well written. This edition is about 1 1/2 times the content of the third edition due to the addition of the box girder chapter and the greater content of data. Next to the AISC manuals, this should be on every structural engineer's book shelf.
Need to know where stuff comes from..........2006-05-28
This book is an absolute mandatory purchase for anybody who needs to know the origin of AISC, AISI, etc, stability design criteria. The references alone are worth the price.
It is not a textbook, so would not be useful for typical structural design engineers or students. It does not go into detailed derivations, but is clearly written and points the reader to all the right sources for the details.
DBD
Great Book for the Practicing Engineer.......2000-06-07
Galambos covers many topics that aren't even addressed in other texts, let alone the codes. It is a compendium of knowledge covering the mundane, standard areas as well as special situations that are maddening to research when you come across them.

Basic Introduction to Sports Writing.......2007-07-11
This handbook is a very basic introduction to sports writing. It's written at what appears to be a junior high/high school level for kids looking at sportscasting as a career. I was expecting something a little more comprehensive, something along the lines of an MLA styleguide...But, then again, it is "just" sports writing. Doesn't take a genius, I guess!

Reckless Disregard.......2000-09-04
If ever there were a journalist who cannot be trusted (Matt Drudge aside perhaps), it is Cockburn.
Cockburn's criticism of Reagan are by and large on the mark. But Reagan has been analyzed and critiqued by far more able critics with far greater credibility. Cockburn, a supposed "radical" and a former paid shill for the PLO (who never bothered to disclose this relationship while he was supposedly an objective reporter), was a long time contributor to the Village Voice. His pieces in The Village Voice over the years were, as often as not, a vile stew composed of ersatz radical politics, bitchy attacks on fellow journalists, and the occasional actual story accompanied by relentless self-promotion. He was also not above character assassination and very selective reading of facts in order to further his agenda du jour. Although he goes after Reagan here, liberals are often Cockburn targets -- he delights in attacking them for not being pure enough for him, even as he often gives right wingers and reactionaries a free pass. (If his recent article taken from his forthcoming book about Al Gore is any example of the book, Cockburn's newest offering is another example of this.
Simply put, there are better Marxists, better writers, better cultural critics and far more able journalists. Take a pass on this book.
Great stuff.......1999-08-10
Cockburn is the master of the polemic. His words about Reagan, food, travel, *anything*, are worth reading.
No other book so devastatingly captures the 80s.......1998-05-25
I read this wonderful collection of super sharp essays by the 'last marxist' himself back in the late 80s. Still have the Verso paperback edition on my book shelf and have given it as gifts for one occasion or another over the years.
Whether he is writing on Reagan, Thatcher or James Bond and travel his essays can not be beat for totally and unapologetically taking class analysis in a wildly creative and laugh out loud direction. Unpedictable, untrivial and totally original.
Get it and remember why Reagan and his machine were so dispicable.

Disappointed.......2007-07-22
I'm sorry to say that I had to return this item as the binding was back to front. So much for quality control.
Not the quality I thought it was........2007-07-13
This Bible is over 2" thick and does not have a reinforced spine. The one I received had some of the pages wrinkled and once folded out werer longer than all the others. The one I reordered had pages not attached properly at the top of the spine. This Bible could not stand up to everyday use without the spine breaking. After returning both of these I ordered The NASB (Updated) In Touch Ministry Bible and have been very satisfied.
Almost Perfect.......2007-04-04
I have the first run, with the raised spine back and slip-case. I was extremely pleased with it when I first purchased it, and for the two years it took me to transfer all my notes into it. But now, in its third year of use, the cover is coming off in the back of the book, just inside the doubled-up glue-page. It is showing signs of separation in the front too, and I am pretty disappointed in the book that I thought would last me the rest of my life. I paid a premium for this one for that reason, but have owned (and used hard) many other bibles that have held up better than this one.
Nonetheless, I'll keep it, for the publisher has apparently discontinued that degree of quality for trading it in, and I've already grown fond of it. Cambridge is coming out with a similar bible this fall in the NASB, and I have my sights set on that. I found it quite invigorating to re-study all those years of notes anyway, and am rather looking forward to refining them yet again into a Cambridge that I really hope will last me the rest of my life!
I would encourage readers to be comfortable with this bible if they plan on being gentle with it. It is perfect for those that only used their bible for a few hours a week. But after 3 years of daily use, mine is not holding up as well as most inexpensive run-of-the-mills. Please be advised, a nice cover does not a good book make! Its still an excellent layout, and maybe a little epoxy will make it good as new.
I might have bought the last of the 1st run............2007-03-30
Whew! It's hard to believe these last couple of reviews. I wish you guys would have stated where you bought your versions. I picked up mine in September 2006 from [...] It is the old version that was highly reviewed. Shortly thereafter, when I checked back, I noticed that it was out of stock......That is a shame if they changed something because now a good friend of mine wants one after seeing mine.
All of the previous posters were spot on with their reviews. It is close to perfect in almost all areas. The only thing I might desire is a few more maps and in color. However, on a list of the 20 most important things that would be # 20 and the first 19 were fulfilled. The wide margin format was a must and the paper is excellent. Smyth-sewn and the calfskin are incredible.
Not the same Bible2.......2007-03-09
Just to add one more thing to the other review. This is now a new printing, in addition to the slightly different cover it does not use the high quality imported paper. To me, with poor eyesight this is a big deal. I would guess that paper cost have gone up and the publisher elected to use the cheeper paper instead of raise the price.

Book Description
Authoritative, accessible, and engaging, here is a new reference from The New York Times, a comprehensive, nearly 700-page bible of all the garden news that's fit to print. Based on "Gardeners Q&A." the enormously popular syndicated column, 1000 Gardening Questions and Answers is like a passionate conversation between gardeners and gardening experts. Every week readers from around the country send in their most vexing problems--how to divide perennials, prune raspberry canes, grow basil that really tastes like basil, get rid of earwigs, find long-lost varieties of flowers, keep honeysuckle under control--and every week, the authorities at the Times write a column full of answers.
Carefully selected, updated, and expanded by Leslie Land, one of the column's two authors, here are 1,000 Q&As that add up to an informal encyclopedia of gardening knowledge. The book covers flowers, trees, shrubs, the lawn, vegetables, herbs, fruit, indoor plants, soil, pests, and troublemakers. It addresses problems and provides answers to difficulties in every North American zone. Hundreds of line drawings illustrate the book, providing botanical identification and demonstrating how-to gardening techniques. In addition, sidebars throughout supply supplemental information--"Dos and Don'ts of Deadheading," "Annuals that Beat the Heat," "To Prune or Not to Prune: The Clematis Question," "Air Layering," "Windowsill Bonsai"--plus quirky facts, trivia, lore, and myth. It's big, it's got heft, it's filled to the brim with information. And it's so lively, it reads like a novel--and belongs on every gardener's potting bench and bedside table.

The New York Times 1000 Gardening Questions and Answers: Based on the New York Times Column "Garden Q & A.".......2007-07-15
Great book for any gardener will help me a lot to have a beautiful and healthy garden.
Excellent Gardening Resource, high recommend.......2006-06-21
I love to cook, and I decided to try my hand at gardening to see if I could grow some of our food. Needless to say, I had no idea what I was doing. I found this book at Smith and Hawken and it and helped me to obtain reasonable results the first year. My garden now grows a little more each year. I turn to this book regularly, when I am planning on expanding my garden or troubleshooting.
The book is subdivided as follows:
1. The Flower Garden
2. The Landscape Garden
3. The Kitchen Garden
4. The Potted Garden
5. Garden Keeping
The Flower Garden deals with annuals, perennials, roses and bulbs. Plants that bloom in the spring, summer, fall and then fade back in the winter.
The Landscape Garden will answer questions about the bigger picture it covers: ground cover, lawns, shrubs, trees and vines. The chapter also covers path materials and garden design.
The Kitchen Garden provides information about fruits, vegetables and herbs.
The Potted Garden covers indoor and outdoor container gardening.
In Garden Keeping they cover soil, compost, mulch, fertility and disease and pest control.
The index in the back of this book is very well done. I have found answers to 95% of the questions that I had. The book is weak on organic gardening. If that topic is of special interest to you (as it is to me), I suggest you buy another book on that topic alone.
Overall, I have been pleased with the information available in this book. It has allowed me to grow a fabulous herb garden, and a nice vegetable garden. It has also provided me with enough information to keep a Meyer lemon tree alive and producing fruit for two years. I would recommend this book to anyone that that is interested in gardening.
Everything You Wanted to Know About Garddening in the NE.......2004-01-10
This is an easy to read, practical guide to everyday gardening questions, with lots of specifics, reference materials, and explanations. The index is massive, the research is thorough, and the subject matter will strike a chord with every true gardener. I highly recommend this book to help answer the mysteries that seem to crop up every year in a northeastern garden.
A title which lends to leisure browsing as much as reference.......2003-06-17
With its question/answer format and a blending of information gleaned from over a decade of New York Time's gardening column, The New York Times 1000 Gardening Questions And Answers: Based On The Column "Gardeners Q. & A" gathers the questions of avid gardeners and the experiences and advice of gardening professionals under one cover. Add a chatty tone to their answers, which goes into more than just a few lines of detail, and an organization by type of plant, and you have a title which lends to leisure browsing as much as reference.

Rick Reilly, the mainstay of Sports Illustrated's back page, is a writer with a facile short game, but, as The Life of Reilly makes clear, he was born to go long. As entertaining, clever, witty, and, at times, irate as his rants and raves at the end of each week's issue can be, it's the sheer talent and bravura he displays in the features he's penned for the magazine that best exhibit why he's considered one of the finest sportswriters of our time. If his columns have a way of constantly poking you in the ribs, the longer pieces can sometimes take your breath away.
While The Life of Reilly covers the bases of all major and most other sports, Reilly's writing about golf is especially stellar, and three pieces alone--his chronicle of a round of golf with President Clinton, his account of O.J. Simpson's trials on public golf courses, and his reportage, on deadline, of Jack Nicklaus's sixth victory at Augusta--are worth the volume's greens fee. As beautifully as Reilly can paint the big picture, these pieces display his uncanny eye for detail, his skills as a reporter, and his inventiveness as a writer. On Nicklaus's improbable Masters title at age 46: "Maybe Nicklaus had drawn up a contract with Lucifer for one last major, for that slippery 20th that had eluded him since 1980, for a sixth green blazer. In exchange, Nicklaus would do pro-ams in Hades for the rest of his days. What else could explain it?" What else, indeed.
Reilly provides short postscripts to most of the pieces--some are just pithy, while others open windows onto the writer's craft. They're a nice touch, but then, Reilly's work, in general, is full of them. --Jeff Silverman
Book Description
In the last 15 years as a senior writer for Sports Illustrated and the only opinion columnist in the magazine's 40-year history, Rick Reilly has covered every aspect of the sporting life, from tennis moms to Lakers-obsessed Jack Nicholson. He's written about Katarina Witt behind the Iron Curtain, wrestling priests in Mexico City, and (reluctantly) accompanying models on the swimsuit issue. His level-headed and often hilarious approach has earned him a devoted readership. This collection presents the best of Reilly: unforgettable sporting moments, favorite columns, and unpublished pieces.
Customer Reviews:
Hillarious.......2007-01-10
Rick Reilly has a unique gift for communicating his humorous tales. Thumbs up.
The reason I subscribe to SI........2004-04-14
Every Thursday I check the mailbox when I get home, see my Sports Illustrated, and go straight for the back page so I can read Mr. Reilly's column. There is a reason he has been named Sportswriter of the Year so many times, he is simply the best. Reilly writes about the humorous, the sad, and the ironic of sports. I laughed at why he hates the Yankees so much, and almost bawled when reading about the Columbine teacher who gave his life for his students. I do some writing myself and even in my dreams I am not half as good as Mr. Reilly is, and never will be. If you are a fan of good, solid writing, pick this book up and read it over and over again.
The funniest writer I have read in a long time........2003-11-06
There are serious columns in the book. The humorous ones are what made me read the book again. The chapter on the Olympics is the funniest thing I have ever read. Anyone who thinks Reilly is boring has no sense of humor.
This one's a keeper..........2003-08-26
I had the privilege of being interviewed several times by Rick when I was a high school track athlete and he was a young flip-flop wearing sports writer for the Boulder Daily Camera newspaper in Boulder, Colorado earning his stripes covering high school sports. Even way back then it was obvious that he enjoyed sports writing and it came as little surprise to see him eventually end up as SI's most notable writer. This collection of some of his best (but not all of his best) SI columns is a gem. Not all are "laugh out loud" humorous, but many are (a testament to his versatility as a writer). His postscript comments are also entertaining. After a thorough reading, this book is a keeper. I can't wait for Volume 2.
Reilly is the King.......2002-09-06
Nobody writes about sport like Reilly. This is a great collection of his Sports Illustrated pieces. If you are a fan of sports journalism, this is a must read for you.

Wow - this is a pleasant surprise, a beautiful bible at a great price.......2007-10-16
This is a well made and well designed bible. I wanted a good ESV bible and I have found one. The True Tone cover is very nice, I think its better than many leather covers which look and feel cheap. I had the Delux Reference Edition, which has larger print and more opaque paper, but I didn't care for the very narrow columns and the way the psalms appeared. I really like this design, even though the print is smaller and lighter, the overall quality is excellent. I have purchased bibles that were much more expensive and not nearly as nice. Print quality is even and clear through-out. The size is perfect for me, not of the super thin variety so common nowadays, but not too big and bulky either. At this price, with the generous Amazon discount, its a bargain.
If you need a bible with larger darker print, I recommend the NASB update side column reference bible, genuine leather, by Lockman Foundation. Amazon sells it for $33. Another excellent large print bible is the Oxford RSV (not the NRSV) Annotated Bible, it has larger, darker print and is very comfortable to read and to hold. I have spent alot of money on bibles that are much more expensive, but I think these 3 are the best. The Cambridge KJV Presentation Reference Bible is the only good high priced large print bible I have found. Most Cambridge bibles are very well made but have small print.

The ESV is my favorite translation of the Bible since the RSV. I like the single column format of this edition except that it wastes too much space by starting each verse on a separate line. I much prefer the paragraph format. Also the paper is too thin. You can see the lettering from other pages too easily. The TruTone imitation leather feels good (I'm sure it makes the cows feel better too) and the binding seems well done. Maybe someday they'll get it perfect, like my old RSV Harper Study Bible (except for the study notes :-).
Apples and Oranges.......2007-09-17
I appreciate everyone's comments. I'm happy to find the ESV Single Column Reference Bible, because even though the margins are slightly smaller than the ESV Wide Margin Reference Bible, there is actually more room because each verse starts on a new line.
Two comments, though, on the reviews.
I think that when we review a particular edition of a Bible, we should stick to evaluating that edition, not its cheaper brothers and sisters. For instance, we learn from our friend R. Anderson a few days ago that the premium leather edition is sewn, not glued (as so many reviewers have contended). So it pays to stick to reviewing the particular edition.
And by no means should we compare it to another translation. That's a bit like saying the Beethoven concert tanked but the Mozart concert was great. Most of us who study the Bible select them based first on the translation. So if I want an ESV (which I do), it doesn't help me to know that the NASB is a better printing job.
Blessings to you all
Just An Additional Word About Bindings..........2007-09-15
I just wanted to add this bit of information to all the other good reviews of this product. I personally contacted a customer rep from Crossway and they gave me the lowdown on the bindings -- glued or smyth-sewn.
With any Crossway Bibles, the -ONLY- editions that have a sewn binding are the Premium Leather editions. The only exception to this is their Journaling Bible, which has a sewn binding even in the hardback editions.
I believe that some of the reviewers here who may have criticized this Bible for having a glued edition were folks who purchased something other than the Premium Leather.
So, if you purchase a bonded leather, genuine leather, Tru-Tone, hardback or softcover edition you will -NOT- be getting a Bible with a sewn binding. If that is important to you (and it should be, considering the costs) you will need to get the Premium Calfskin Leather Editions for any edition of the ESV; if that is not listed, don't count on getting a sewn binding at all...
This is a great Bible.......2007-08-26
Now that I've had three days to read over this, I give it 5 stars. The thin paper others complain of is just not that big a deal and when reading I don't notice it. The cover is buttery soft calfskin and the sewn binding is top notch. The single column makes for a very readable format and the text is quite large enough to see easily. It's not too thick and heavy, as some wide margin Bibles can tend to be. BUT, the biggest factor to me is how a Bible feels in your hands when reading it. Some very nice Bibles just don't have a good feel to them. This Bible feels great in your hands and is just a keeper all around.

it really kicks a__.......2006-07-30
This book is; to borrow another Hiaasen title a real Hoot. He is without a doubt not only informative, and thought provoking but he does it while leaving his readers in stiches. I think he shows a genuine affection for the idiots he writes about
Most columns are winners.......2006-07-06
Sidenote: I also wrote this review for "Paradise Screwed" b/c it's the same book, just different selected columns.
If you've ever read a Carl Hiassen book (or Tim Dorsey for that matter) and you wonder where he became so cynical, or where he gets his outrageous ideas from, read this book. Taking only the best of his newspaper columns, this book gives little glimpses into the absolute mess that was Miami/South Florida in the 80's/90's. Taking on anything from connected land developers, to cartel-backed politicians, to prostitute employing evangelists.
Each column is 1 to 1.5 pages in length making it the perfect length to read here and there, or big bites at a time. If you're a fan of Carl Hiassen, try this book not for Hiassen's opinion, but just for the shear knowledge of ludicrisiosity he imparts.
If you like his novels, you will love his columns.......2006-04-13
I've never set foot in Florida, but I can't get enough Carl Hiaasen. I've read every single novel he's written and I have to say his columns are just as worthy a read.
From the opening column of the book (Carl Hiaasen's Florida Stress Test) to some of the more serious writings (the group of prostitutes he talks to, the crumbling county health building) Hiaasen writes it all with a razor-sharp flair and zeal that can't be matched. You know this guys just loves going to work every day.
Who else would refer to the newly elected mayor of Miami as a "pernicious little ferret"?
Keep them coming, Carl. I'm waiting on Volume 3.
I Wonder What Happened to that Jeb Bush guy?.......2002-07-25
There was a brief stage in my college career when I hoped to get into newspapers. Unfortunately, I'm a very slow writer. I would sweat bullets over remarkably simple stories, and my editorial prowess was equally dubious. It was at that time I discovered Carl Hiaasen and his remarkably subversive novel, TOURIST SEASON. His author's bio indicated that his newspaper setting was drawn from authentic experience -- he was a columnist for the Miami Herald.
Unfortunately, the web was just in its infancy, and access to Hiaasen's newspaper writing was apparently one of the few exclusive benefits of living in South Florida. KICK ASS turns out to be just the sort of collection that I had been craving for many years.
KICK ASS does not disappoint. It begins with a nifty introduction that provides a smattering of biographical information on Hiaasen, as well as a context for the subjects and tone of his columns. Hiaasen clearly resides in a longstanding tradition of muckraking American journalism, and I mean that in the best possible way.
This is no mere sampling of his work -- there are more than 200 columns here, organized by topic, and just about every one of them meets the mandate stated in the title of the collection. Hiaasen has a passion for the environment, consumer protection, crime control, and good government. His portrait of a Florida reeling after the flood of growth and development of the last three decades is even starker than the one in his novels. Speaking of the novels, it is also fun to see where he "lifts" some of his ideas for the things that happen in his books. The overamorous dolphin of NATIVE TONGUE appears in KICK ASS as well.
If there is anything to regret about this book, it is that the topical organization often generates confusion for the reader when certain figures re-occur. Some of them almost develop a roguish charm. After all, us non-Floridians don't have to live with the direct consequences of local corruption. A little wrap-up to let us know how some of the notorious figures and controversies ended up would have been nice. I always hated that device at the end of his novels, but it would be perfect for a collection like this.
Another Must-Read from Hiiasen.......2000-06-27
As a lifelong resident of Florida (albeit a ninetten-year-old one), I have seen Florida at its best and worst. Hiiasen's columns represented in this book illustrate the "politics" and people of a great but confused state. If you live in Florida, have visited, or even have heard of it, this book will both amuse and depress you, as is the nature of the state. Everyone will identify with the outrage Hiiasen evokes over the disregard of the envirnment, the sham of politics, and the overall life in Miami, and indeed, all of Florida. This book will remind readers of what Marjorie Kinnan-Rawlings and Marjorie Douglass once experienced in Florida, and tells both the good and the bad of what has happened after a hundred years of exploitation If you want a non-stop laugh and a big dose of reality, read this collection - it's one of the best books in print right now.

Book Description
From a strip club in Indiana to ritual gatherings near Austin, Texasfrom Brooklyn in the 50s to L.A. in the 90sMichael Ventura takes us on a tour of the American psyche and speaks out on a civilization in seeming agony.
This is the only collection of one of America's original writers observing and pondering the implications of the current state of the American psyche. His grasp of war, jazz, religion, and death are of "uncompromising spirit", says Andre Codrescu. "The Report on Endarkenment," says Robert Bly, "is the greatest essay written by a member of his gengeration."

A Student.......2000-10-24
Michael Ventura teaches at my school. Often he has read things to us in his writing class, and sometimes they have been things he himself has written. He is incredibly wise, wheather he knows it or not, and is a voice that should be heard. Buy this book because, and trust me on this as a student of his, you will not regret it.
The New American Bible--Once.......2000-06-03
This collection of essays blew my mind in a big way when I first stumbled onto them in the early 90s. Of course, I was a fan of Ventura's "LA Weekly" column, from which many of these essays come. And Ventura read these essays on Pacifica's KPFK here in Los Angeles, so hearing his magnetic voice read these be-boppin jazz-style essays was a double plus. No one else, at that terrifying time in America, seemed to be saying the things that needed to be said about the Gulf War, mental illness, the fact that our jobs are killing us, and the need for a spirituality of compassion in the barren American landscape of the post-Reagan years. Ventura's essays on Las Vegas are fun. I re-read them every time I venture off to Sin City. I often have my students read Ventura's essays to see what voice and presence in writing are all about--he's got it.
These essays now might seem a little bit dated and heavy-handed; but they can still pack a wallop to the sophomoric mind and those just starting to struggle with life issues--Ventura is perfect for those in their 20s--or their midlife crisis. Put on a Mingus or Parker CD while you read, and it'll be quite an experience.
Ventura is a truly American voice on par with Dos Passos or Randolph Bourne (who? )

havnt read it yet... but needless to say its a good book..
Letters At 3A.M.: Reports on Endarkenment.......1999-01-31
I not only have read this book, but I also work for the publisher.
To start, I would like to say that this book is not out of print.
Personally, at Spring Publications (the publisher) we do some pretty heavy, dry writing. But Michal Ventura lightens things up just a bit with his looks into the American way of life. His essays range in topic from the neo-pagan rituals that he has participated (The Witness Tree) in to his own alcholism (In Defence of Alchol). (in his words, "I don't like to drink alone, I love it.")
For anyone looking to find good left in America, Letters at 3 A.M. is just the thing. In my eyes, it is one of the top five books I have ever read.
Brilliant writing & breathtaking honesty.......1998-07-02
Over a decade ago, a friend in LA mailed me an LA Weekely column called Letters at 2 AM about a man partaking in a ritual with friends and I'd never forgotten it. When I stumbled across a book by the same title as the article at the library, and realized it was the same author, I rejoiced. (Yes, reprint this book! I want my own copy!) I skipped the first part of the book, essays on current (now past) events, in favor of the last part of the book, more personal essays on alcohol, ritual, syncronicity, friendship, relationships, and other things that our minds - well, mine anyway - contemplate at 2 AM but don't have words for, let alone articulate so beautifully. I was moved and inspired by his unflinchingly honest reportage on his life.
