Book Description

Versatile and easy to make, felt provides an ideal base for surface embellishment. This inspirational guide explores the possibilities, from creating your own from scratch, to selecting unusual dye combinations, and producing three-dimensional pieces. Using the sample projects that illustrate the main techniques, both beginning and advanced fiber artists will soon be experimenting with color, line, shape, pattern, and texture. Special sections on Japanese Shibori (knotting and dyeing the surface) and Nuno (combining felt with other materials to create rich and exciting fabric surfaces) make this a must-have for all fiber artists.

Brilliant! what more can i say? A must have for any felt or textile artist.

5 out of 5 stars Felt to Stitch by Sheila Smith.......2007-08-08

I have devoured this book from front to back. It is truly a beautiful book with excellent information and gorgeous pictures. It is very well written with easy to understand instructions for those new to felting as I am.
There are a few projects; again easy to understand and the book encourages the felter to explore their own creativity and generally have a ball!!
Congratulations Sheila Smith on a book which will easily become one of my treasured possessions.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-07-29

This is a very good book with ideas on what to do with your felted pieces. I especially like the needle felting parts.

5 out of 5 stars It's All Here!.......2007-04-12

I bought this book to use with developmentally disabled adults. These adults live on a ranch, helping care for several fiber producing animals. This book is part of a cottage industry proposal that the staff and I are working on and I couldn't be more pleased. The pictures are vivid (appealing to my imagination) and the presentation is logical and orderly (appealing to the teacher/student part of me).

The directions are simple and straight forward. The projects are adaptable for all levels of cognitive functioning and motor skills, and provide absolutely beautiful results. From making flat felt as a raw material to three dimensional objects, from surface designs to combining felt and fabric, as well as jewelry, this book covers the basics and gives lots of creative ideas for projects. The results that my "students" came up with were lovely, and as always with felt, nearly impossible to duplicate.

The experiences we used from this book were satisfying for those who love texture (wet/dry, bubble wrap, different types of fibers, raw fleece/fulled fabric). They were also satisfying for those who are visually stimulated, as color is well used throughout each project. The surface design ideas were usable by all, regardless of functioning level, because many different options are presented (paint sticks, stitching, stencilling, block printing, beadwork, cobweb, needle felting). The skills required are repetitive and not technical, the materials are easily found and readily available, and the actual individual tasks of going from raw fleece to finished product are varied, interesting and appeal to short-moderate attention spans. The working process provided a wonderful atmosphere for cooperation and conversation, as each adult helped or received help from their peers and shared the excitement as their project began to take shape. We now have finished items that my students can use, sell, or wear and they know which animal gave its fleece to them to make it.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is fascinated by fiber and feels intimidated by the current "fiber artist" trend. Nearly anybody can make felt and be delighted with the results. This book is an excellent guide to finding the different ways to make and use felt, and is suited for the beginner and the seasoned alike. Excellent!

Book Description

In Classic Fabrics Henrietta Spencer-Churchill shares her knowledge of the long history and art of decorating with fabrics, enabling anyone to recognize and use traditional textures and patterns to shape great rooms.

The first section of the book examines the history of fabrics, from medieval tapestries and eastern silks, to eighteenth-century Toile de Jouy and the latest innovations in synthetics. This is followed by a series of beautifully photographed rooms that show how textiles are used in the home for curtains and drapes, table linens and bedspreads, cushions and lampshades, and the more specialized canopies and awnings. The final section describes the textures, patterns, and weaves of cottons, linens, wool, silks, satins, velvets, damasks, jacquards, laces, and tapestries. Finishes such as felting, glazing, waterproofing, and moire are explained, and hundreds of fabric samples are reproduced.

Illustrated with over 200 vibrant color photographs, Classic Fabrics offers hundreds of inspirational ideas and practical tips.

5 out of 5 stars As Always........her books are Wonderful!!.......2004-02-26

Ms. Lady Henrietta's books are always great. There are many interior designers who write books to put on the market.....but I haven't yet seen anyone who consistently puts out wonderful books like she does. They are the best!! I am a sold sucker on her books. I feared that since she has so many decorating books out there, that they would do nothing but repeat themselves. But was I ever wrong?!! Always comprehensive, detailed, yet never over the top. Her books are always easy to understand. The royal lineage of her family surely puts her in a super huge advantage in that she is always around the beauty in the country homes of England's countryside of Oxfordshire and surrounding areas. I am planning to get each and every book she has written to include in my design library. They are great inspirators.
You will never go wrong with her books. :-)

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book.......2001-11-21

A wonderful reference guide to fabrics AND a top notch coffee table book! Even your guests who find nothing appealing about textiles will find this book just divine! Pour a glass of Merlot and relax with this wonderful "picture book". The text is excellent too if you are in the mood for details...

Book Description

Here is the first and only book to explore cutting-edge print design for fashion through the designer’s eyes—complete with interviews, exclusive archive material from international fashion houses, and full-color photographs of patterns. Innovators such as Eley Kishimoto and Jonathan Saunders explain their work, take us through their artistic process, and consider the relationship between fashion designer and print designer. Every page offers something beautiful and striking—motifs based on nature, others drawn from urban graffiti and graphics, and still more that go retro, abstract, or folkloric. The material is exquisite and invaluable to anyone interested in fashion and design.

2 out of 5 stars Thought it would be better.......2007-05-12

I got this book for a digital surface design class that I am taking. I thought that it would be a really cool book and I had actually flipped through it once. Yet when I got it, I was a little dissapointed. The author does not carry her thoughts well from one paragraph to another. I feel like she uses big words that she might not necessarily understand completely...oh and there is a missing page :(

5 out of 5 stars GREAT.......2006-11-18

I loved this book - very inspirational - gave me lots of insight on top designers that I hadn't read about elsewhere. Total eye candy. I highly suggest this book for anyone in the design biz or who just needs inspiration and is a real lover of prints and patterns.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Never judge a book by its cover..........2004-02-21

Just because the title of a book has the word "Cottage" in it, does not mean it is a book about Cottage Design. Who the author is, has a great deal of bearing on what you will find inside the pages of said book. Any one who would pick up a book by Lynette Jensen would realize she is a quilter and "Designer" of quilts. Ms.Jensen is a very well known and talented designer. If "Cottage" design isn't your style...then neither is this book. I happen to love her work, the book is a pleasure to look at, to gather ideas or improvise your own from hers. I enjoy looking at it over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for Quilters.......2003-01-25

Lynette Jensen is very well known by those who quilt. Her books contain mainly quilting patterns or ideas for decorating and entertaining with quilts and accessories. For those of you who quilt this book will not be a dissappointment. It delivers all of the great quilting patterns, tips and hints that her books are so well known for. This is a great book for a quilter.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Picture book.......2002-11-14

This book would make a lovely coffeetable book. If you are looking for a book about quilting then this is not for you. I found this book to mostly showcase what the author's accomplishments rather than teach others. I love Jensen's quilts but feel like I've been cheated with this book.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful and Informative.......2002-07-13

Lynette Jensen has given us an information packed, beautiful book here. She has lovingly decorated her newly married daughter's starter home in tipical Lynette style. There are how to's for a lovely Bridal Shower,a Garden Party,Fourth of July picnic and much more! There are vintage postcards to copy, great decoupage ideas and many wonderful recipes, gifts, not to mention lovely quilts (including a fabulous yo-yo quilt!) I don't see how you could expect any more from a book. It's just wonderful!
Can you tell I love this book?

1 out of 5 stars A big disappointment.......2002-01-11

Gives cottage style a bad name. Not good decorating. Very cutesy. Junky. Dated. Busy. Sorry I bought it. Settings look more like bad crafts shops than the kinds of home I'd want to live in. I read after I got this that this person is not a designer but a crafter, which explains why this is so junky.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Not just a bunch of patterns.......2007-03-09

This book is an excellent tool for learning how to create original designs. It leads the reader through the knotwork process step-by-step instead of giving a collection of knotwork designs for the reader to copy. I was most impressed by one of the final sections, which describes and illustrates how to embellish your knotwork designs with zoomorphics, or animal shapes integrated into the design.

5 out of 5 stars Create your own original Celtic knotwork design.......2003-06-10

This book is for people who would like to be able to design Celtic knotwork for quilling, parchment craft, woodcarving, painting, counted cross-stitch, or needlepoint (to name a few examples). It allows you to design beautiful frames, invitations, carved boxes, greeting cards, pillows--let your imagination run wild! I used this book to design watercolor frames.

The author divided up her chapters according to the knotwork design's basic construction unit, e.g. small loops, hearts, fish, corner motifs, etc. There is also a chapter on "Creating Your Own Designs" and one on "Using Knotwork Designs in Other Crafts."

All of the illustrated patterns are based on angles of 45, 90, and 180 degrees and are plotted on a dotted grid, which makes them fairly easy to resize and replicate on graph paper. All you need in addition to the graph paper is a pencil and the ability to find a quiet spot and concentrate on your design.

The many colored illustrations are beautiful, and the knotwork diagrams are easy to follow if you give them the attention they deserve! The author has also written a handbook on Celtic knotwork, and one entitled "Celtic Spirals and Other Designs."

5 out of 5 stars The queen of hearts...........2002-07-20

CELTIC KNOTWORK DESIGNS by Sheila Sturrock is a nifty little book. As complex as the Celtic knots appear, it all comes down to this, they can be reduced to curved and straight lines, the most important combination being the "small hearts". Sturrock says there are four basic hearts and she provides examples of each displayed against a grid. Almost anyone can create the grid as it consists of lines of dots applied with a ruler. These dots are then used as the basis for organizing the hearts, parts of hearts and straight lines that makeup the most complex design. The only other thing you need to study are the anima elements in the zoomorphic designs that also are based on hearts, parts of hearts and lines.

One needs the following for making Celtic knotwork: the materials listed by Sturrock, patience, imagination. Not everyone may be a gifted needleworker, but those willing to work at it will be able to master this straightforward art. I am using this book to instruct young girls.

5 out of 5 stars Detailed and Easy to follow.......2002-07-16

If you want to learn to draw Celtic knotwork, you need this book. It explains in detail and excellently detailed color diagrams how to plot the points for many different kinds of knotwork. From simple two-strand braids all the way up to interwoven animals, it is simply gorgeous and comeletely easy to understand. I can barely draw a straight line, yet I can use this book to create intricate designs for t-shirts, jewelry, embroidery and more. I've even had a couple friends who are tattoo artists borrow it to improve their techniques.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Beginner's Book.......2001-10-25

After wrestling with the venerable George Bain, I turned to this book to get a handle on Celtic knotwork. Sheila Sturrock breaks down the framework of knots into simple, basic shapes, allowing the reader to start making decorative knots within minutes of picking up the book. It proved to be a good starting point for me.

3 out of 5 stars Imaginative Endeavor.......2007-09-20

After seeing this author on tv, I purchased this book. While the costumes are very imaginative, I would embelish them a little more. Some of them appear sloppy & cumbersome (like the racecar), but after all, it is "glue and go!"

5 out of 5 stars Easy, fun costumes to make.......2007-01-12

This book was purchased foa a student teacher who is constantly being chalanged to be creative with her early elementary students. It has proved to be easy to use, full of unique ideas and best of all,CHEAP; for the young teacher on a very limited budget.

5 out of 5 stars Just Great.......2004-12-14

Our family has known Ms. Cleeland for many years, in fact she dressed our son in her costumes and he always won first place. You will so enjoy all her ideas, but most of all you will find her costumes simple to make. You will have bunches of fun making the costumes but most of all your kids will love wearing them

5 out of 5 stars This book is Great!.......2004-06-04

My little boy loved this book and is looking forward to building the racing boat this halloween.

There are enough good costume designs that I think we'll be able to use it for years.

Most of the instructions look easy enough to follow, with only a few minor exceptions.

I don't have a girl, but some of the little girl costumes were the cutest.

Anyways, I think this book is perfect for anyone with a kid that is 5-13 years old and is interested in making their own costumes for Halloween.

2 out of 5 stars ?.......2006-09-07

This book is for persons who are just starting out, not tailors. It is good to have reference books in your library but this book has the same construction directions that a vogue men's pattern has in it. If this book costed 5 or 10 dollars it would be worth it but not for this price. Thank you

4 out of 5 stars Difficult read.......2006-04-21

This book is not for beginning sewers! It's not an easy book to get through. If you are really ready to make a suit jacket that will be comparable to $1,000 designer jackets, I'd recommend you also have on hand Tailoring: The Classic Guide to Sewing the Perfect Jacket. The pictures in that book are much clearer and easier to follow. And that book shows methods of tailoring with fusible interfacing.

Also, the Zapp Method of Couture Sewing has a great chapter on sewing a tailored jacket. Still, I do believe that a really fine jacket needs to use sew-in hymo hair canvas just as Roberto Cabrera (the author) recommends. It makes a tremendous difference.

If you must use fusibles, then Anna Zapp's method using Fusible Acro is best. I think, however, you will find it eventually separates after many dry cleanings.

You'll most likely need the internet to find these interfacings because places like Jo-Anne's certainly don't carry them!

1 out of 5 stars Classic tailoring techniques.......2006-03-26

Excellent resource for those desiring to know how to create really beautiful jackets for men or women. Completely replaces pattern instructions purchased with the envelope.

4 out of 5 stars good.......2005-08-21

This book gives a lot of advice. The only thing that's keeping this book from being rated 5 star is it's picture. It's black and white!!!!

5 out of 5 stars We used this book at school.......2004-06-22

Although this book wasn't on our book list, most of the class bought and it followed what we were learning. I have since refered back to it everytime I make a suit. I still have the jacket I made in class, and it looks as good as the day I finished it almost 15 years later.
This is as good as it gets in tailoring. It works just as well for women as it does men. Can also be adapted to coats.

If you are looking for specific instruction on how to get started in these crafts, or you are trying to enhance your technique, this book is not for you. It is highly historical and gives scanty direction. Judging by other books I have read, the history isn't even that good.
