INSPIRING.......2007-02-21

The artist does a good job covering all the needed supplies and methods to create such beautiful floor cloths. There is a lot covered in these pages, although I could have skipped the color theory part given its really trial and error and personal design ultimately. There are lots of beautiful floor cloths to admire by this artist and others. Wish there were some substantial patterns to apply in addition to the very basic stripes included. This book helps motivate one to begin and do it right, and the rest is really up to one's imagination which the author gives a good springboard to leap from.

The magical Ms. Frizzle takes her class to the ocean in "The Magic School Bus on the Ocean Floor." The bus transforms itself as needed, from a submarine to a surfboard and the class clothing changes with it from scuba gear to Ms. Frizzle's beachball sandels. The bus travels the continental shelf to the deep ocean floor and on to tropical coral reefs, with numerous excursions for children to examine the details.

The illustrations are filled with facts, labeled wildlife and wise-cracking children. The information is easy to swallow as well as interesting and the humor relies on lame sarcasm and a silly lifeguard -- kids should love it.

A great science book for children.......2004-09-07

An unusual science teacher takes her students from the classroom into the ocean - physically. The school bus she drives plunges right into the water and transforms, as needed, from bus into submarine, submersible, and surfboard so that her class can reach and explore every part of the ocean. The expedition starts at the continental shelf and moves through continental slope, ocean floor, deep-sea vents and a fringing coral reef. On their way, they children find themselves magically equipped with diving suits and they can now study plants, ocean water, animals and their habitats.

This book is beautifully illustrated and entertains while teaching important information. Kids will love it.

20,000 Leaks Under the Sea.......2003-10-14

At this point, Ms. Frizzle and her class have explored things like the waterworks, the many layers of the earth, the human body, and even outer space. So it's only natural that Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen would decide to lead their readers on an under-sea adventure. "The Magic School Bus: On the Ocean Floor" is another top-notch collaboration by two people who show no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Written in 1992, "On the Ocean Floor" picks up where "Lost in the Solar System" left off. Ms. Frizzle's students are working on their ocean science projects, which makes their teacher very happy. However, it makes them hot and tired; the temperature on this day is soaring!

"I wish we could go swimming," comments one student while putting the finishing touches on a display about how ocean animals swim.

"As a matter of fact, children," says the Friz, "I've been planning a class trip to the ocean for tomorrow."

And, just like that, the class - as well as the reader at home - is being whisked away on yet another magical field trip. The kids think they're just going to spend a day having fun in the sun, but Ms. Frizzle has other ideas!

"On the Ocean Floor" rivals "Inside the Human Body" for the amount of information - not to mention good-natured humor - packed into one 48-page book. Just about everything you can imagine - and anything you can't - is touched on in this compelling romp through the heart of the ocean. Ms. Frizzle's class learns all about ocean life; the kids come across things such as barnacles, grunts, limpets, sponges, sugar kelp, tubeworms, and whelks. More familiar entities include coral reefs, dolphins, lobsters, plankton, sharks, tunas, and whales. The students explore high tides, low tides, continental shelves, continental slopes, the ocean floor, hot-water vents, and waves. And I'm only bobbing the surface of what Ms. Frizzle has lined up for her class.

The end of the book leaves us with two things: 1) a little quiz distinguishing what things were true in the story and what things were made up; and 2) another clue as to what the Friz's next adventure will entail. From the looks of it, her idea of a field trip is so old, it's practically prehistoric!

As so often happens, it is common for the things we love in life to grow stale. Rarely does a book series get better with age. But Cole and Degen have managed to do just that. With each "Magic School Bus" story they produce, the product becomes more polished. I had never heard of even half the things this tale delves into, and I thoroughly enjoyed absorbing myself in the read. "On the Ocean Floor" is yet another high-quality effort from two people who wouldn't settle for anything less.

The fifth book in this wonderful series is definitely a keeper, as are the four volumes that precede it. Do yourself a favor, and take a ride on the magic school bus!

This caught my interest very quickly and I breezed right through it! I couldn't find the second book at the bookstore so I'm waiting on bated breath for this one.
It's a great read.

Fantastic start!.......2006-09-27

The book opens with Takeo talking about his mother, and his life in the village he called home. Little time passes before Lord Iida Sadamu oh the Tohan and attacks the peaceful village of the Hidden, slaughtering it's people.Takeo, the soul survivor runs for his life and is saved by Otori Shigeru who takes him in.

It is easy to be swept away by the story that takes place in long ago Feudal Japan. Lian vividly describes the beauty of the land. The characters are strong, willed people who are brought to life with great traditional story telling.
The entire series is fast moving, taking you from when Takeo was just a boy who knew little about the art of fighting, to fulfilling a prophecy spoken of by a blind woman. This is a terrific book to read on a rainy day. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys vivid scenes.

A historical novel with imagination .......2006-02-14

This novel was an utter delight to read, in my opinion. The characters, while stioc, were believable for the culture the author emulated. The subtlety of the political sparing and planning was excelent and I felt the sharp difference between the emotions felt by teh characters and what they showed in thier actions and words were portrayed quite well.
The classic peasant hero figure, found in Takeo, is a universal symbol and is made especially poigniant in the context of the feudal society he is set in. The truely intruiging aspect to me was his conection to the Tribe, a form of outsider class that is both respected for it's abilities and reviled for it's lack of adherance to political mores of society. It made for a wonderful internal conflict with in Takeo that was mirrored beautifuly in the external struggles of the characters competing for Takeo's loyalty.
I strongly recommend this book to any one that is intersted in political warfare, complex characters, or just a good rich reading experiance. I know i can't wait to get my hands on the rest of the series.

Words as well as the floor will sing in this period piece.......2005-09-28

Oft is told the tale of the Bildungsroman. Here we have the quintessential coming of age story, albeit tinged with a bit of ornate Japanese elements.

This book will take you into feudal Japan, beset with Lords, servants, obeisance, and tyranny. But, be ever watchful for bright expressions of honor and nobility. The writing is at times colorful, but aimed more at conveying the story than taxing the reader with having to resort to linguistic gymnastics.

If you're looking for a pleasant escape to the land of the rising sun, during a period fraught with political intrigue, warrior nobility, and enough sword slashing to please any Shogun fan, then this is certainly a read (non too difficult mind you) that you shall enjoy.

One mark of a great book is that you come to see the world as the characters do; the rhythms of the sentences become the rhythms of your own thoughts, and the prevailing mood of the book becomes your own. The knowledge and wisdom of the writer comes to life in you as if conceived in your own imagination.

Because of this, TALES OF THE OTORI (this is the first book in that series) easily ranks with any major work of fiction in the last century -- most directly "Lord of the Rings" (another trilogy, which Auden said exceeded "Paradise Lost" in its grasp of evil). Deceptively simple, the prose expertly mimics the cadences of classic adventure tales, evoking a time and place where the incredible is possible -- in this case, a mythical, medieval Japan. Characters develop literally fantastic powers, but still must live within a recognizable world with rigid rules, struggling both to understand and to conquer their own limitations. The main character is Otori Takeo, a boy on the cusp on knowledge. The main journey is the book is his -- but equal to him is Shirakawa Kaede, a girl who resists being dominated by men in a time and place where men have almost complete domination. Her wiles and will are counterpart to Takeo's ability and determination, and their story is utterly, completely captivating. But it is the telling of it that makes it especially compelling: the prose is that peculiar mix of majesty and melancholy characteristic of much Japanese art, whether painting (Sesshu is referenced many times in the text) or poetry, and Hearn describes the world she creates with tremendous energy and economy.

It's a fantastic adventure, absolutely, full of riveting action and written with page-turning verve...but the mood of the book stays with you long after the last page is turned, and when you awake, it is as if from one the characters' own fever dreams: everything seems a little clearer, more precious, more beautiful and fragile. That is the true gift of any writer, in any time. I've read the series twice, and look forward to reading it again and again in years to come.

Any superstitious person knows that the number 13 does nobody any good. Buildings don't have thirteenth floors, and nobody seats thirteen for dinner. Bakers however, have been known to prefer bad luck over the consequences of being caught short with the dough, but that's another story.

This book explores the popular plot of the mysterious floor between twelve and fourteen, and this time it's a portal to the bad old days of privateers and witch hunts.

Lured by a weird message on their answering machine, Buddy Stebbins and his older sister Liz make separate quantum leaps (via elevator) three hundred years into the past, and join their ancestors on a dangerous but funny adventure.

It's up to Buddy to find Liz, provide legal aid to his ancestors - an accused witch and a pirate Captain - and find a way back to the 13th floor, preferably with all their limbs intact. However, time is running out and the ship that houses the portal is about to sink.

A clever and fast moving time traveling tale, but not at all scary or ghostly.

I liked this book because it is sort of a mystery and history book. This book is about two kids who owe money because their parents were poor and owed money but they died. When the kids, Bud and his older sister Liz, get a telephone message from a person who works on a 13th floor of a building, they think it is a prank. When his sister goes to work and doesn't come back, Bud thinks that she when to the 13th floor. When he opens the door to the 13th floor, he finds himself on a ship with an ancestor! Bud figures out that he traveled 300 years back in time! From there it goes on from Bud learning about a ship to Liz saving the ancestor who called them from accusement of witchcraft. I am not going to tell you the rest of the story. You are going to have to read it!!!

This book was about two kids whose relative is a pirate. These kids get a weird mesage on their answering machine telling them to go to the 13th floor of an old building. One day the boy noticed his sister was gone so he went to the 13th floor to look for her. He found out this was no ordinary floor when he was transported to an old pirate ship. but now that he's there he has to make sure he doesn't change time and find his sister then find his way home.
