Book Description
A breathtakingly illustrated true tale of adventure and discovery to tie in with a groundbreaking new 3-D large-screen movie from the director-producer of Titanic.
In the late summer of 2001, James Cameron, the director-producer of the highest-grossing picture in Hollywood history, led a new deep-diving expedition to the wreck of the lost liner Titanic. With him was a team of underwater explorers that included the artist Ken Marschall, the historian Don Lynch, and two actors from the movie, Bill Paxton and Lewis Abernathy (who played Brock Lovett and Lewis Bodine). Their equipment included state-of-the-art digital 3D cameras, a pair of Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), and a specially built deep-water lighting platform that illuminated the fabled ship as never before. In a series of historic dives they filmed deep inside the ghostly liner, obtaining haunting, never-before-seen images.
In spring 2003, this remarkable journey into the heart of the Titanic will be presented coast-to-coast in a digital 3D giant screen film, Ghosts of the Abyss. For those who will be drawn anew to the story of the Titanic, as well as for those who have never stopped being fascinated by the ship's tragic fate, Ghosts of the Abyss will be a revelation in pictures and words. Cameron compellingly describes just what keeps him returning to the Titanic, and the meticulous journals kept during the dives form a dramatic adventure narrative. But what will truly astonish are new, incredibly vivid images from within the ship's staterooms and public rooms, matched with archival images from 1912 and new paintings and diagrams--a "then-and-now gallery" that captures as never before the history, the drama, and the legend of the Titanic.

Ghosts of the Abyss: A Journey Into The Heart of the Titanic.......2007-04-01
Bought for my grandson's 7th birthday. He loved it, he is into everything Titanic right now. Even my husband loved it book, as did his father.
She still stands as a silent sentinel..........2007-02-18
This book is an excellent tribute to those who designed, built and sailed on the world's most famous ship. It is also a fine tribute to those who sacrificed so much to find the ship laying on the ocean floor,at a depth of 2 1/2 miles below the surface,375 miles SE of Newfoundland, and 1,000 miles due East of Boston; and bringing back to us, in unimaginable detail ,how this magnificient ship, in all her splendor, looks today in her final resting place. For many decades ,there was wild speculation of how the ship would look after so many years under such great pressures and even if she could ever be found. All that speculation has been resolved, thanks to the efforts of these determined and talented people. Not only have they found her, visited her, returned with fantastic photographs;but have also done a superb job of sharing it with us through Motion Pictures,Documentries, beautiful, haunting and imaginative drawings and keepsakes such as this dazzling book.
Where this book shines is that it shows what things originally looked like ,using actual pictures at the time;and then showing what they look like now, after over 90 years of ravages by time and elements.
While the photos alone would make this an exiquisite volume, the text covers much information on the ship, how events unfolded and why things happened the way they did.
The painting by artist Ken Marschall of the Titanic, majestically forging ahead ;while she is being fatally ripped open by the iceberg shows the spirit of man against all odds of nature;and even though man is often set back,he refuses to be defeated. This scene in History is reminiscent of the spectacular explosion and loss of life with the Challenger Spaceship. We all owe a gerat debt of gratitude to the artists who portray images such as Marschall and who have the imagination and talent to paint such a picture as is on page 35, showing the Titanic breaking up,the many unfortunate passengers and crew heading with the ship to their watery graves;while a few fortunate are saved. The lifeboat with its few survivors ,where the artist shows that while some look on,others can't even bear to watch. While photographers can produce excellent images of events,if they get the opportunity;it takes an artist to record events like this.
The book is dedicated to those who perished on April,15,1912,and on September 11, 2001. As the world watched the events of 9/11,the crew who gave us the scenes in this wonderful book, were actually at sea ,diving on the Titanic.
We need books like this to remind us of the hopes, struggles and endurance of Man against both the forces of Nanure ,as with the Titanic and and the Evils of Man, as we saw on 9/11.
Ghosts of the Abyss: A Journey Into The Heart of the Titanic.......2007-01-11
Awesome, in every sense of the word... One of the best books on the wreck i have ever viewed and it ties in brilliantly withthe movie which is probably one of my favourites too! I recommend this to any Titanic bod..
Going to an abyss can be a good thing.......2006-08-13
This book is a welcome additon to any on the RMS Titanic. Its not just history but of the crew of the deep sea submarine. The Titanic always captures ones imagination. This book shows the wear, and tear that nature is bringing the wreck of the Titanic. Its sad how much has changed since her discovery by Bob Ballard. The book goes into depth through pictures, and artwork of famed painter Ken Marschall. What is happening to the liner is awful. I also can respect a book that goes to the abyss without raping the Titanic that is a graveyard too, that deserves to be left alone to its fate by nature. Thank you for Amazon for allowing me to review this book, and give a little opinion on the subject of Titanic.
Haunting.......2006-08-06
"Ghosts of the Abyss" features a collection of the greatest Titanic Wreck images to date. Cameron has wandered into areas of the ship inquiring minds like my own have often wondered about. The contrast of the Titanic then to what she is now reveals the tragic aspects of this signifciant historical disaster. What was by far catching were several 3-D models present here and there such as the Grand Staircase among other locations within the ship. The angles of the images taken and lighting of the wreck were brilliant. If anything, the rare images of the D-Deck vestibules make the book worth the price. A must have for anyone who is captivated by the former elegance of the ship of dreams.
Book Description
This new edition of J. E. Gordon's classic introduction to the properties of materials used in engineering answers some fundamental and fascinating questions about how the material world around us functions. In particular, Gordon focuses on so-called strong materials, such as metals, wood, ceramics, glass, and bone. For each material in question, Gordon explains the unique physical and chemical basis for its inherent structural qualities in irrepressibly fresh and simple terms. He also shows how an in-depth understanding of these materials' intrinsic strengths (and weaknesses) guides our engineering choices, allowing us to build the structures that support our modern society. Philip Ball's new introduction describes Gordon's career and the impact of his innovations in materials research, while also discussing how the field has evolved since Gordon wrote this enduring example of first-rate scientific communication.
Customer Reviews:
Good Text, as an engineering student.......2006-11-10
Good text for fracture mechanics enthusiasts- material failure, strength of materials.
Good reading, if you are an engineer, scientist, or not. Great examples. Dry british writing, but if you can get through it and the silly jokes, you can learn a lot.
Must Read.......2004-08-05
Reading this before embarking on university studies was an inspiration and I still come back to it now, it has a lot to offer all ages and disciplines.
A great book, but buy "Structures" instead.......2004-07-11
This book is part of the Princeton Science Library, the best collection of books on mathematics and science for the intelligent layman. Like other books in that series, it is succinct and clearly written. I read it and thoroughly enjoyed it. All of the positive reader reviews are right on.
Because I liked it so much, I purchased "Structures," also by Professor Gordon. As it turned out, that book covers the same material, but in greater breadth and depth, and with more illustrations. There's much to be said for reading both books, but if you're only going to read one, "Structures" is the one.
Thoroughly Enjoyable!.......2004-07-02
I wish to echo the comments of all the previous reviewers. This is a delightful book!
Subjects such as elasticity of materials quickly bog down in mathematical detail and in the process of learning the subject, the student or interested person may quickly lose touch with what they're actually trying to grasp. This book is mostly a nonmathematical treatment (there are only a handful of mathematical formulas, chemistry equations and graphs throughout the book) which describes in a practical way what really happens with materials. Of course a deep understanding of this topic requires the full mathematical treatment, but this book certainly makes the subject accessible and engaging to anyone interested in the question "Why Don't You Fall Through the Floor?"
I agree with the reviewer who felt this is the kind of book that an undergraduate engineering, physics or applied mathematics student should read along with the more technical textbooks when first introduced to the subject of behavior of materials.
Elegant, Simple and Fascinating.......2001-10-24
Professor Gordon is the sort of teacher I would have appreciated in school. One imagines him as a grey haired gentleman in rumpled slacks and cardigan with a pipe and sneakers who makes it his kindly mission in life to fill his students with a zest for his chosen calling.
His explanations are elegant, simple and fascinating. I can't think of higher praise for someone trying to make sense of a discipline as complicated as materials science.
The problem with most academics is an inherent need to appear learned. This leads to obscure and convoluted explanations that are, if not overtly, at least subconsciously designed to maintain the gap between the ignorant masses and the enlightened adepts. Even when such academics make a conscious attempt to simplify, their efforts are too often sabotaged by the bad habits of a lifetime.
This is why good popularisers are so difficult to come by, and why the Gordons of the world should be so prized.
This book isn't just about the science of materials, but about how such an exotic subject actually connects with our everyday lives. We live in a certain way, and not in a different way, because of the strengths, weaknesses, costs and working difficulties in the materials that we use. I don't think most laymen ever bother thinking about the world in quite this way.
This book is not actually meant for engineers or scientists, although most such technos would greatly benefit from reading it (if only to learn the meaning of true grasp and clarity). Its true benefit is to those curious laymen who wish to know more, but who find the usual explanations beyond them.
This book should be required reading for all undergraduates, not just aspiring scientists or engineers. In fact, it should be especially required for non-technical types.
Book Description
"An impressive, accessible, up-to-date, and sometimes exhilarating study of the free-market warriors who make up the international trading community."
-- Financial Times
A Million A Million is the inside story of the mysterious and wildly influential world of trading. In our interconnected global markets, traders have become the frontline, free-market warriors closest to the money, closest to the action. Their reactions to world events can topple governments and cause currencies to rise or plummet. They affect the prices we pay for the food we eat, the gasoline we use, the gold in our jewelry, the steel in our cars, even our homes and our mortgages.
Hillary Davis, a former portfolio manager, shows us who these people are, what motivates them, and how they came to be so powerful. And of course she provides compelling insights into the work they do and how they do it.
Based in part on firsthand interviews with superstars in New York and London, A Million A Million gives readers a special opportunity to learn from the candid observations of Leo Melamed, Michael Bloomberg, Muriel Siebert, Bob Mnuchin, David Shaw, Stanley Shopkorn, Eric Sheinbergm Bill Johnston, Gary Lapayover, and many others.
A Million A Million also offers readers a context for understanding today's markets, with a fascinating account of the rise of trading, the evolution of the markets, and the challenges of today's complex, lightning-fast trading environment, as well as a provocative vision of a virtual-reality trading future.
Throughout this revelatory book, you will meet the criminals and the geniuses, the celebrity traders and the newbies, the women traders who "crashed the party," the visionaries, and the larger-than-life personalities. In all, you'll find an exciting portrait of a unique culture that profoundly affects our world.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating read.......2000-04-16
My biggest complaint with most books like this is that they are boring to read because they go on and on with long explanations that lose the point somewhere along the way.I loved this book and was pleasantly surprised. There was no time to get bored. The author moved easily from topic to topic. Her observations were not run of the mill, but were sharp and fascinating. The characters came to life. The book's approach is more like an economic look at the world of trading and its implications rather than a recipe book for how to trade. But as the author said, you can't learn to trade from a 'how to trade book' anyway. If you could, people wouldn't get paid so much to do it.I'd recommend this book very highly.
Breezy, superficial, insubstantive and overly adoring.......2000-04-03
I wanted to like this book, and held out high hopes through the first several chapters. It's real flaw is in its lack of substance. Perhaps the editors or Ms. Davis feared losing readers in overly technical explanations of complex trades, but I believe there is a middle ground which was not even approached. I was also dismayed with the chapter on women in the business--not a single profile of a woman attempting to balance a high powered career with family. As a group, the individuals (men and women) come across as smug, self-satisfied and self-centered (the section where she writes about their charitable work is as fawning as it is laughable). But what this book really needed was more meat--more about programmed trading, the chartists, the value traders, derivatives, day traders, etc.
Trader as Savior.......1999-08-13
Ms. Davis might not stretch to say traders are saviors but she almost deifies them with her genuinely affectionate portrayals here. She's intent on redeeming the profession (as if it needs redeeming--it doesn't), which she imagines the Average Joe scorns and vilifies. I bet the Average Joe pays little attention to hyperactive market makers, compared to the time spent fretting over his or her own investments. Still, Ms. Davis assures us that for every rogue trader like Nick Leeson (who brought down the British Bank, Barings) or Mike Milken (wait, Mike is NOT a crook, she corrects, notwithstanding the criminal charges), there are scads of other, brilliant, hardworking people--possessed of traits you and I could only wish to have--who lubricate the capital markets and provide the fuel for growth. In other words, she's a proselytizing apologist: by compensating she overstates. If you're not in the financial business, you might find this breezy book an acceptable companion at martini time, if you're someone who will gaze in amazement at the hue of a cocktail olive. She's oddly cozy and deferential with her subjects, like a mistress. More like it, the traders are friends whom she has no desire to offend, or perhaps she plans to approach them for future employment. The trouble is, the topic cries out for a critical eye. For those who take investments seriously the text is a great failure, totally lacking in specifics, or even anecdotes that might illuminate. Imagine a cook book that attempts to describe the taste of the recipes without listing any ingredients and you'll understand the problem with "A Million A Minute." Ms. Davis, your readers can take more. A truly entertaining book (and with more meat) is Michael Lewis' "Liar's Poker" and "Pit Bull" by Martin Schwartz. Mr. Schwartz, especially, is a man who has traded for years, who can share his secrets (successes and failures) and who can live to tell about it!
Excellent.......1999-01-19
Finally! A serious, in depth, intellectual business/finance book written by a woman! Bravo! I really liked this book. It gets into everything - the history of trading, how people's minds work, it delves into derivatives, currency trading, internet trading - in short, it was a fascinating read. I'll be looking for her next book.
Some interesting stories & comments, but largely ineffective.......1998-12-11
When I scanned this book initially I was encouraged by the authors last chapter discussion about how the internet transformed trading as we know it today, empowering everyone/anyone to be a trader. After buying and reading it I was disappointed. Except for a few interesting pieces, (like how barings bank became bankrupt), the rest of the stories were uninteresting and did not keep my attention. Too much attempts were made to gloss up the interviews with these super traders. The author would even describe in great detail the furnishings of the traders offices, etc. In the first chapter, was interesting to read how traders move such great sums of money (a million a minute), but the author kept repeating this topic over and over. Finally the book consisted too little substance and not enough practical information for the average investor. If you want to read about the lifestyles of the Wall ST. traders, this book might be for you, but if you're looking for practical and useful information to help you in your trading, look elsewhere.

Anyone can paint a floorcloth using this book.......2006-01-05
Having made several floorcloths, I was encouraging my sister to try it. I bought this book not only because it offers easy to understand step by step directions, it also makes you realize that you don't have to be an artist to create a beautiful cloth. The author's ideas are so creative, yet simple enough that anyone reading this book will be motivated to give this project a try.
First Floor Cloth Painted.......2002-06-25
I read this book from cover to cover. I am not a painter and have never attempted anything like this before. I wanted to be sure that I was getting all the information I needed to be prepared in painting my first floorcloth. This book is a must have for anyone that wants to start painting floorcloths. The information is very detailed with step by step instructions for many projects. I learned so much about the differences in canvas, paints, techniques, what different tools to have and what they can do. You must check out kathy coopers website. It's great. She has given me the confidence and the background information to enhance my skills as a crafter and artist.
Had to buy it.......2000-05-03
I got this book from my local library and read it from cover to cover. It was informative, clear and made the process managable for non-painter types (like me). I had to have the book!

A sobering look at reality.......2004-04-06
I plan to pass this book along to my professional friends contemplating motherhood. After I had my first child and continued in a demanding, full time job, I wondered why no one warned me how stressful it would be to be a working mom and why no one told me about the trememdous guilt I would feel about placing my baby in long hours of daycare. Since most of my friends and colleagues did this, I assumed it would be difficult but bearable. Karen Engberg provides the facts in an honest and helpful way, without being too negative. She gives practical advice on how to scale down one's expectations with examples from her own experiences. Unlike other books on this subject, she is not passionately preaching for full time motherhood nor full time work; rather, she is trying to find a middle ground where women can feel happy, fulfilled and less pressured.
Personal, hard-hitting, insightful........2000-03-05
This survey of marriage, work and motherhood examines modern issues in work and home life when both members of a couple work, considering the issues which face women who seek importance both at home and in careers. Chapters blend personal experiences and humor with hard-hitting insights on how women can rear children in a work-oriented world.
A professional mom imparts wisdom to our daughters........1999-11-06
Finally! A female author with experience debunks some of the happily-ever-after and Supermom myths that pull women with families and jobs in over their heads. Karen Engberg is a doctor with four kids who describes with great intelligence the "territory between the rock and the hard place" that so many of us find ourselves inhabiting after a few years of marriage, a couple of kids and the job of our younger dreams. Beyond simply describing that territory, however, she offers delightful pearls of wisdom rather than finger-shaking advice.
One of the great things about this book is that it can be cracked open to whichever chapter interests you on a given day. There's a parallel here: women's lives, as Engberg points out, are almost never linear; neither is this book. In some ways, reading it was like talking with a friend during a morning walk: it's informal, personal and reminiscent while at the same time being informative and accurate.
I keep "It's Not the Glass Ceiling, It's the Sticky Floor," on my bedside table to peruse at length when I can't sleep or to take in small doses when I'm too exhausted to keep my eyes open for more than a few minutes. In either case, unlike so much of what's written in this genre, I always feel better for the insight it provides.
Book Description
Proven pay-for-performance solutions from some of the country's leading compensation experts.
Measuring performance is now standard procedure at all levels of business. But the natural extension--linking performance to compensation for every employee--is only beginning to be recognized as a valuable strategy for continued organizational success.
With a breadth of expertise unavailable in any other source, this book offers insights from fourteen prominent compensation consultants. They discuss such topics as: * developing and installing incentive plans for all employees * communicating changes in compensation programs * designing incentive plans around new performance concepts like the Balanced Scorecard and Economic Value * executive compensation * group incentives and team-based pay.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely a "Must Buy"!!!.......2002-04-19
Let me start off immediately by saying that I have no vested interest in promoting this book. However, having said that, THIS BOOK IS BY FAR THE BEST I've seen focused on aligning employees and corporate strategy. The book provides very meaningful and immediately implementable ideas on how to incorporate performance-based compensation systems throughout the organization. "Aligning Pay and Results" would be particularly useful for managers and companies implementing a shareholder value program. Certainly, there are other books which cover the subject well and even expand upon some of the ideas; but I have yet to find one that does it better. "Aligning Pay and Results" is absolutely a "must buy."
Mostly An Add For Consultants.......2001-06-17
I have been carrying this book around in my briefcase for awhile. I finally got to read it. It promises much but falls quite short. It is not well edited and the consultants are really narrow in their individual focus. It is more "selling" than "telling" and this is disappointing from such a group of potential experts.
The editor asked each consultant to write in an area in which they are a leading figure. But the pieces are not well integrated nor does the editor set the contribution of each writer in the context of designing a usable pay solution. It is not much on "how to" and that's what I think people want from something like this. It focuses on specific tools and looks like much of it was adapted from the consultant's advertising material. Not very useful to a practitioner or academic.
Writing is colorless and drab. I am a human resource executive in a moderately sized company and was looking for guidance and perhaps some answers. And this missed the boat for me. It did look promising because it is published by AMA and has some important firms making contributions. I am sorry but it just did not fill the bill for this human resource executive.
An invaluable study.......1999-09-12
" This book brings together a group of prominent consultants to focus on one of the most important trends in the management of people: the use of compensation as a reward for achieving organizational goals."
Within the context of comparison between the new pay and traditional pay, throughout the book contributors discuss some vital issues with real cases such as:
* use of incentives as one of the tools to accomplish performance,
* compensation strategy and variable-pay system: DuPont case,
* competency-based and skill-based pay as incentives for employees to enhance their competence and add new skills,
* problems of team-based pay,
I highly recommend this invaluable study as a resource for all HR professionals.

Book Description
Whether one lives in a classic townhouse, country farmhouse, or urban apartment, choosing the right carpet can be a daunting prospect; this is the first book to guide the reader through the process. The selection of carpets featured in these pages includes both antique and contemporary Oriental, European, and American carpets. Over 200 photographs illustrate a broad range of inspired color schemes in different interiors with carpets of all sizes, to aid the carpet collector or homeowner in showcasing their treasures.
The authors discuss the various types of interiors for which carpets are intended, with focus on why and how the design, colors, and textures of specific carpets work with certain room settings. Imaginative ideas showing how carpets can be used to create a wide variety of design effects are included, such as Wild West rooms with Navajo rugs, stunning ethnic-style outdoor rooms with Turkoman flatweaves and Indian dhurries, rustic French farmhouses with cotton runners, Manhattan lofts with carpets used as wall hangings, country houses in Europe and America with floral Savonnerie carpets, and attractive staircases covered with Turkish kilims. There is also a discussion of the history of carpet display in the western domestic interior-- from the earliest export of Oriental rugs to Europe in the fifteenth century to the present day, the age of the designer carpet.
Detailed information is given about the typical characteristics of each type of carpet by geographical area, such as the weave, size, and use of traditional motifs. The book concludes with a glossary of terms, a useful list of further reading, practical information on care and repair, and an international directory of carpet dealers and museums with noteworthy carpet collections.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent book for Householders and Decorators alike........2000-08-03
This book is more then just a reference guide of carpets from around the world. It shows how carpets can be used in various interiors, from country houses to a city pied-a-terre. The authors go into detail about color, design, and texture and use actual interiors to show the many ways that carpets can be used. From the great rooms of Chatsworth, to staircases, entry halls, bedrooms in a small cottage, nothing is left to the imagination. Useful chapters include "Care & Repair" and an excellent international directory. There are also excellent examples of antique, traditional, and contemporary rugs from every part of the world as well as a good section on Kilms. Book Description
"They work full time in the richest nation on earth, yet they can't make ends meet. They can't make ends meet because their wages are too low. They are health care aides who can't afford health insurance. They work in the food industry, but depend on food banks to help feed their children. They are child care teachers who don't make enough to save for their own children's education. . . . They care for the elderly, but they have no pensions."-from Raise the Floor
A job should keep you out of poverty, not keep you in it. But millions of people make up the working poor in the U.S. Rooted in powerful new research and personal narratives, Raise the Floor makes the case for a livable minimum wage and shows how good wages are good business.
Raise the Floor illustrates how the current annual minimum wage income of $10,712 a year just doesn't add up. For example, to make ends meet, two parents with two children would have work more than three full-time minimum wage jobs-66 hours a week-leaving little time for sleep, family outings, religious services, or participating in community activities with their kids.
In a January 2002 poll of likely voters, Americans overwhelmingly identified raising the minimum wage as key to stimulating the economy. By a resounding 77 percent, these voters favored increasing the minimum wage to $8 an hour-the amount a single, full-time worker needs to meet minimum needs.
Raise the Floor is written in a lively, readable style and includes boxed quotes from folks in all walks of life who recognize the need for practical solutions to ending poverty. Documented with 60 tables and charts.

Everyone, rich or poor should read this book.......2005-11-26
For the past 5 years, even with all the corporate scandals and a worse than Vietnam war killing America, never before in U.S. history has our government recklessly hit the gas pedal on giving more "tax cut" handouts for the wealthy elite and big business scoundrels. I'd rather socialize wealth than socialize poverty and terrorism any day. Anyone who thinks otherwise is only looking forward to turning America into a business concentration camp.
They don't work for the employers...........2004-07-09
From the editorial review:
"In a January 2002 poll of likely voters, Americans overwhelmingly identified raising the minimum wage as key to stimulating the economy."
And of course, this poll result should translate into federal policy, for surely each one of those likely voters has a strong background in economic theory.
"...$8 an hour-the amount a single, full-time worker needs to meet minimum needs."
Minimum needs...like the "religious services" mentioned above?
For the rational Homo sapiens seeking an understanding of how minimum wage laws affect the economy, I recommend Capitalism by George Reisman.
Every member of Congress should read this book!.......2001-09-17
As Congress prepares to debate the national minimum wage this Fall, there couldn't be a more timely or compelling book. At first I was a bit surprised to see this coming from the Ms. Foundation for Women, and while it may be an expansion of their advocacy work, they seem to have assembled an experienced, knowledgable group of researchers and writers to put this study together. It is clear, readable, convincing. Even the manner in which tables and data are presented is easy on the eye (and the head). But as I was drawn into the book, I began to see that looking at an issue like the minimum wage, one needs to do so understanding its history (and the authors do this compactly but thoroughly) and its relevance today (and the tie-in to the Living Wage movement is vivid and convincing). This is a book not only about female or male workers, but families, and beyond that, to the values this nation is supposed to stand for...and it made me so fired up that this country still keeps hard working people poor that I wrote both my senators about it. I hope they read it, and I hope you do too...
