My new favorite writing book.......2007-09-07
It's funny, it's true, it's irreverent, and it's one of the best new books on writing and publishing available. (Literary snobs won't agree, but who asked them?) I've got three shelves crammed with writing books, and while most are pretty good, they all offer the same safe advice. Gore stresses the importance of marketing and promoting yourself and getting your stuff OUT THERE -- even if it means self-publishing your poems on a copy machine or posting a humor column in the PTA newsletter. While Gore's clear, take-no-prisoners style will appeal mostly to the young and the hip, I'm recommending this book to everyone in my writing workshops, no matter how old (or un-hip) they are. -Cindy La Ferle
A warning and some advice.......2007-08-18
If obscenity bothers you, look elsewhere. Better yet, do yourself a favor and get over it - this book is outrageously good! It's like having coffee or a beer with the kind of friend who loves you enough to kick you out of the rut you've dragged yourself into. Ariel Gore writes with bold, active passion. If you take it to heart, How to Become a Famous Writer Before You're Dead will teach you to do the same.
Not your typical writers guide!.......2007-07-30
Ariel Gore's "How to Become a Famous Writer Before You're Dead" is not your typical writing handbook. Filled with funny antecdotes, sometimes subversive humor, and an overall supportive tone, Gore has managed to write a book that, should we follow her advice, can only lead to success in writing.
Even if you have no aspirations to writerly famedom, Gore's book is a must read. Gore's book includes a mix of straightforward advice with interviews of other writers and stories -- both funny and serious -- from her own writing life. She is at once witty and intelligent without being smug or "holier than thou."
I found Gore's book insipired and have taken much of her advice to heart and I encourage you to do the same. If nothing else, you'll have fun reading this book! The layout ranges from how-to chapters to interviews to advice columns. The only way you could possibly be bored reading this book is if you skip everything between the first and last pages, and even then, you'll still find something interesting! Read it...then go write Ariel Gore a thank you note for her hard work and her willingness to share her experiences with us all!
Another Ariel Gore Hit..........2007-07-29
I've loved Gore's work since the very first Hip Mama book, when I was pregnant with my first child. Gore's release of How to Become a Famous Writer dovetailed with the start of my freelance writing career (Hey, Ariel Gore - are you following me?).
This book is just like her other titles: irreverent, funny, and down-to-earth. But it's on a topic that's relevant to anyone with the writing bug, not just fans of her previous titles. She talks about the more unconventional ways of publishing, including chapbooks, zines, and self-published books. With this book, you'll be grabbing Fame by the horns and wrasslin' it into becoming your pet.
Of coure, we can't all write just like Ariel Gore, which is unfortunate. It would definitely increase our chances of famous writerhood.

This little book is a delight........2007-06-09
Got a postcard at school advertising a book on journalism. Before I tossed it (I'm retiring -- what do I need another book on journalism for?) I turned it over. There was a picture of Ariel Gore's book, with a brief blurb. I was intrigued and ordered it via amazon when I got home. What a gift to myself it turned out to be. I needed this boost. I've wanted to write for years, and resigned myself to the comments written on students' papers and my own online forum. After reading just the first couple of chapters, I know there are no excuses. I consider this book a godsend. Fun to read, beautifully written, wise and wonderful. Thank you, Ariel Gore!

In The Music of Light, Lindsley Cameron chronicles the Japanese writer Kenzaburo Oe's remarkable relationship with his son Hikari. Although Hikari was born with a severe brain deformity that resulted in retardation, autism, near-blindness, and poor coordination, he has become an accomplished composer of classical music. Kenzaburo Oe, the winner of the 1994 Nobel Prize for Literature, has written much about Hikari and the rest of his family over the years. Cameron studies the intersections between Oe's life and work in this volume. She also discusses the nature of creativity, the scientific theories about brain injuries, and the history of musical savants.
Oe's close relationship with his son is unusual, especially in Japanese society, where men do not usually get very involved with raising their children. While helping Hikari deal with his health problems, the Oe family struggled to cope with their culture's severe discrimination against disabled people. Cameron describes Hikari's musical development and his amazing ability to memorize songs. Hikari's life story is an inherently fascinating one--a man who cannot express himself very well verbally somehow figured out how to do something most people cannot do: make up songs. Cameron interviewed both men and other family members for this book, and has done a good job of capturing their personalities on paper. Hikari and Kenzaburo Oe influence each other's work tremendously, and the elder Oe's writing and fame have had an enormous impact on the family's life. This is the best book I've read this year. It covers so much: a family's love for their brain damaged child and their commitment to the grueling, challenging years raising him in a society that wants him to just disappear. It is at once literary criticism, classical music criticism, cultural commentary, biography, pschology, psychiatry, medicine and a touchingly told love story between man and son. By the end of this book you will fallen in love with Hikari the sweet savant from Kobe and his wonderful father, Kenzaburo.

Grammar Made Fun!.......2000-06-16
This book provides an illuminating and fun approach to a traditionally boring topic. The mnemonic devices used by the authors make remembering grammar rules easy. Also, the excercises at the end of each chapter make the material practical in real world settings. My favorite part of the book, however, is the exercise written by the author's son, Sean.

Simply the best. Too bad the publisher has let it go out of print........2005-09-30
This is the best studio lighting textbook I have ever found. It's well written, concise, and well illustrated. Kolb and Overturf do an excellent job of explaining everything from the most basic lighting setup to the most complex. Natural light, hot lights and strobes are all covered. In addition there's a significant amount of information on set construction and excellent suggestions for designing your own studio. Best of all Kolb has put a great deal of effort into explaining why one would want to choose a particular approach to lighting a subject. The underlying message being - just because you can doesn't mean you should.
Unfortunately the publisher has chosen not to reprint this book. As the current used prices indicate - it's in demand. Someone in the McGraw-Hill sales department needs to take notice. Too bad they're not because I'm trying to adopt a new book for my large format photography and lighting class and no other seems to fit the bill quite as well.
An excellent studio textbook........1999-01-21
This is an excellent studio photography textbook.It does not use the dry "how to" approach which is the downfall of many photography books.Full of stimulating theory and helpful specifics this book has changed the way I work in the studio and teach photography.

Part II covers the etheric body (a body of Light which is comprised of millions of filaments surrounding and interpenetrating the physical body). Huffines teaches us how to purify and vitalize our etheric body in order to make a strong connection with our soul.
Part III introduces us to the directors of our physical systems. Using guided imagery and meditation, Huffines teaches us to communicate with the directors of all the major systems of the physical body, i.e. immune system, endocrine system, nervous system, etc. Through dialogue with the directors, important information can be gained to help heal and regenerate the individual system and strengthen the body as a whole.
Part IV teaches how to connect with the consciousness of the DNA, how to raise cellular light, how to develop fearlessness, how to purify the emotional body, how to build new beliefs and how to raise our commitment to healing.:

Healing Yourself With Light was given to me by a customer when I owned an Angel Store. About 18 months after opening the Angel Emporium, my son took his life. The book by LaUna Huffines was instrumental in my recovery from the painful event. I must give this a 5 Star rating, if for no other reaon, than it was a tool in supporting me towards the healing. I do admit, I read everything metaphysical that came out from 1990 to the current date. This book is still with me, and shows the wear from use. As much as I treat my books with delicate care, this one still shows its true value by the wrinkles! Sort of like me :-)
FANTASTIC.......2006-12-17
This is an absolute must read if you want a practical how-to book and be healed of physical illness. This author writes exceptionally well and the exercises in the book are easy to do. I can't say enough good things about this book. After throwing money out the window on a best selling author's book on angels, I read the reviews on this book and ord'd it right away. This book can heal emotional, spiritual, physical and mental ailments. I have already experienced miracles with my overwhelming health problems and I'm only on Part 3 of the book (Pg. 107.) If you are suffering with a debilitating illness and are sick and tired of being sick, this book restores hope and results for me were immediate. When I began reading the book yesterday, I had a dental infection, an earache and a painful stomachache on top of everything else that's wrong with me. Today, less than 24 hrs. after starting the book, I woke up, those 3 ailments were gone. I don't have to go to the dentist now. My mind felt great...no drug hangovers like I often have if I take my medicine (I often skip dosages because of the side effects,) and I feel much less chronic pain today than usual. I didn't think the book could get any more interesting than what I've read so far but I just can't wait to get into the 3rd section of the book. It's fascinating, enlightening, empowering, uplifting and I love the exercises in this book and how the author explains everything so beautifully!!!!! If you are open to angelic healing, this is a must have. I even saw the angels working on my body during some of the meditative exercises!!!!!!!! They were working feverishly on the stomach area "vacuuming," and circling the neck and head area. They did not have wings and were about 1" in size. They were a celestial rose/flesh color and resembled human embryos but were very small in size.
Angels Do Help Us!!!.......2003-03-27
Highly recommend this book: the angels do help us!
One day about halfway through the book I decided to practice seeing and feeling the Golden Triangle (as described in the book). During one practice, when my sole aim was to just experience the Triangle more clearly, I suddenly saw in my mind's eye an angel about three inches high and brilliant white, made of light. It was working on my spine at the base of my neck and was pulling fibers of shining white light down my spine and out from the centers of my spine between each vertebrae, straightening these fibers of light and untangling them. As the angel worked its way down to a place where it has felt for years as if two vertebrae were always grinding together and where I've experienced considerable discomfort, it seemed as if the angel was pushing on the disk between the bones and then straightening more of the fibers of light. It then worked its way down my spine the rest of the way, and then was gone. I was stunned because I hadn't even been thinking about my spine while I was practicing, but even better, I've had no pain or discomfort since that day. It's simply gone!
Got Healed With Light.......2003-03-19
I have read all kinds of angel books, but this one stands out as one that gently nudged me into my own center. The words are soothing and the suggesttions practical. I recommend 'Healing Yourself With Light' for anyone that has ever wanted to find a way to transformation. I can really feel the love and light flowing from every page. It is like the angels are there with you when you read it. Get it; you won't be disappointed!
An excellent guide to healing.......1999-11-21
This is a profound book of healing that brings you the mystery school teachings and timeless wisdom on healing with easy-to-read, step-by-step instructions. You are not only healing symptoms, should they be physical or emotional; you are taught how to work at the level of your aura, etheric body and chakras, call in the angelic healers, and transform yourself all the way to your cells and DNA. Healing then transforms every level of your being so you can live in harmony with your soul and the divine plan of your life. For those of you who love the Alice Bailey books, enjoy the Orin books, or feel drawn to working with angels, you will find this book to be a true gem. Having known LaUna for years, I can say that she uses and lives by what she teaches in this book and her vitality and aliveness are inspiring. I have personally used techniques out of her book to keep colds from coming at their first sign, to heal a sprained wrist, and to transform my aura and chakras.
