Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good reference book but boring.......2002-01-16

Has lots of tables and charts, and is adequately explained. The author also writes study guides for standardized architecture tests, and that pretty much sums up the style: no opinions, just facts. Very thorough though. Personally I don't need a whole chapter on locks, but I suppose there are those who do. Presentation and graphics are a bit low-rent for an architecture book.

4 out of 5 stars Thorough knowledge for Interior construction and details.......2001-03-27

This book should be on the shelves of every interior designer- it's so thorough that it's a little cumbersome at first. It should be used as a reference book, it gives chapter-by-chapter explanations on the specifics for the construction and application of windows, casegoods, partitions, etc. If there is ever any doubt in a designers mind as to how exactly something is constructed or works when it comes to the specifics of interior design, this book's for you.

Book Description

More than twenty superstars from the world of crafting--including Anna Corba, April Cornell, Sandi Genovese, and Andrea Grossman--offer their expert advice on how to design a work space where creativity can blossom. Like the bestselling Business of Bliss, it's practical, inspirational, and beautiful to behold.

Research by Craft Trends Magazine reveals that 89% of all crafters are women, and that they want to work in an environment conducive to creating their art. This invaluable and very special guide helps them achieve that goal, whatever their passion. It goes straight to the experts: successful women who have made their mark in more than 10 different creative fields. These top designers and artisans offer insights gleaned from years of experience, reveal how they constructed their own creative spaces, and explain how the reader can make practical use of these decorating, organizational, and inspirational techniques as they go about designing their own work areas. Among the pertinent questions they answer: Where did you like to work as a child? What's the most important thing about having your own place to work? Are women's creative spaces different from men's? How important is it for you to organize your work, and how do you do it? Do you listen to music when you work--and what kind? The featured designers include Wendy Addison, Dena Fishbein, Jill Schwartz, and Suze Weinberg and their fields range from paper crafts to gardening.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......2007-08-31

This book is one that I will page through again and again. I found
the work spaces of these woman, creative, fun, and totally beautiful
and charming. There are so many different ideas, and at the end of the book, you
are wishing to see even more. This book is worth every penny, and I will refer
to it now, and in the future, for inspiration.

3 out of 5 stars Visually pleasing.......2007-08-11

While I was hoping for more this was a visually pleasing book. I enjoyed seeing how different creative women utilized their space. I would have like to see more spaces

4 out of 5 stars Casual Cottage Chic favorite .......2007-08-05

What a delight to find many of our favorite artists in their working spaces. Cindy Ellis is one of our favorite artists...delighted to have a peak inside her studio, and studio's of many other creative women. They are all an inspiration to design and color!

3 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2007-08-03

For those of us who live and work in our creative spaces, this book is a great inspiration. It really helped me dream bigger about my work space, and gave me some great ideas on how to organize for beauty as well as funtion.

If you love vintage details (and even not) this book presents wonderful references for organizing and creating a workspace that is personal and inviting. Some of the artists studio spaces really push the idea of craft storage... Also the women featured in the book, who have used their art to make a business for themselves, can be empowering. Great photos, a good deocorating resource book for the price.

4 out of 5 stars Where Women Create.......2007-07-07

I enjoyed the variety of creative women they featured. The photos were helpful and I got a lot of ideas for my new studio.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as Guide to Frame Construction.......2006-01-11

I purchased this because I was very impressed with the "Graphic Guide to Frame Construction" book. I was much less impressed
by this book - lighter on the details and less updated.

5 out of 5 stars Accurate and Detailed.......2005-01-20

Here you will find up-to-date information about virtually every material involved in interior construction - common and uncommon, residential and commercial - so you can compare key factors and make the best decisions for all of your projects.

Illustrated with hundreds of clear drawings that can be easily incorporated into architectural plans and show how these materials connect to the structure of a building and to each other. Here is information on everything from drywall to resilient flooring, from raised panelling and colored concrete to banisters, handraios, door trim and cabinet hardware.

Written by a practicing architect with his own firm, the drawings and descriptions have been reviewed for accuracy by independent architects and builders from all over the country. The result is an unrivalled guide to finishing the inside of a house.

4 out of 5 stars God is in the details with this one folks!.......2000-05-20

The Graphic Guide to Interior Details: For Builders and Deigners gives a comprehensive analysis and break down, not only for professionals in the industry, but for the first time home buyer, or for people who are just plain interested in built structures. There are endless details and drawings that are accompanied by current and up to date information that not only complies with modern day building codes and standards, but also has innovative and progressive techniques for the future. I'm a student that has gotten great use and resource out of this book.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A master class from the masters of design.......2007-09-09

This is an inspirational book that is tailored to a decorator, designer or design enthusiast. It contains the views and insights from some of the worlds leading international designers. As the cover states, this is a MASTER CLASS, it is more about the philosophy of decoration and how window treatments compliment good design rather then a step by step guide for the do-it-yourselfer. Which I personally found very, very refreshing. Fabulous photogaphy and styling, with a broad cross-section of styles and a wonderful eye for detail.

      5 out of 5 stars All inspiration.......2007-09-03

It's true--"Master Classes" could throw you off. It isn't a how-to book. Sunset's Curtains and Draperies book is the best at that--very nitty gritty. This is a book of gorgeous photos from brilliant designers that talks about what your window treatments should do for your home. I've gotten it from the library and am planning to purchase it bc the quality and taste is superior (and my house is small and pretty plain).

3 out of 5 stars Not for your average home........2007-01-16

I was looking for a book that had some practical ideas for the average home. The ideas in this book were pretty elaborate and very pricy. There was not one picture in this book that remotely resembled a room in my house. If you have degree in interior design and live on Park Ave you will probably like this book. But if you fit that description you probably have a designer on speed dial and would not need the book at all.

3 out of 5 stars Review of The New Curtain Book . . ........2006-08-15

This book contains many ideas for curtains and drapes grouped in a logical order. As a drapery maker, I found it useful as an idea book for clients, but not as useful for the do-it-yourself at home sewer. I agreed with most points in the book, but there were some ideas that I did not agree with, as if it were written by someone who had not actually sewn the draperies. It had many examples of different fabrics, and, thus, was very colorful. Great for some one in my line of work, but probably not as practical for someone who wishes to sew some drapes for her/himself.

      5 out of 5 stars Very pleased.......2006-05-28

This book is amazing! Its basically a trend book, fabulous ideas, very well presented in beautiful enviroments. I get inspired every time I look at it.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars A+ Design Book.......2006-06-09

This is a wonderful design resource book. The books shows the homes of some of the design world "greats". It is eclectic and not your run of the mill "pretty" interiors, but offers new directions in ways to think about design.

2 out of 5 stars May Be a good Coffee Table Book.......2006-01-19

I was somewhat disappointed in this book because I was looking for something that would explain the "French Style" of decorating. This is more a book of the homes of Parisian designers, obviously with a lot of money. The rooms in the book are beautifully photographed and I liked the chapter called "Seven Trends for Today." These included brief text and lots of photographs of the Provincial, Provence, Eclectric, Eccentric, Atlantic, Chalet and 1930-40's style trends. There was a brief description of the style trends, but the photos that followed gave good examples.

The remaining two chapters in this book are: Parisian Fashion Designers at Home and Parisian Interior Designers at Home. The problem with this book is the rooms depicted would require someone to have an unlimited budget and/or access to resources for their furnishings.

This book was not helpful in showing the "regular" person how to achieve the French Style in their own home. Most of the text just describes the exquisite items and creations. For example, "A vase- light has been created from minutely worked Venetian glass, and it dominates the sculpted wrought-iron pediment of a play cabinet which was designed by Gilbert Poillerat" which desribes an elaborate vase with flowers out of glass. There were a few rooms where you could probably implement and adapt to be used within your own home, but the "French Style" depicted in these rooms are based on ALL the elements, from the beautiful custom glasswork to the exquisite fabrics and furnishings.

If you are an interior designer who has clients with unlimited funds or are someone with an unlimited budget, you might find this book useful. For those of us who have to stay within a reasonable budget, this is not the book to learn and implement French Style.

What could have elevated this book above 2 stars would have been more informative text on creating the style and not just descriptions of the products and creators of the items in the photographs.

1 out of 5 stars Not What You Are Hoping For!.......2005-03-15

Having several books on French style and French Country style, many showcasing homes in France, this book is a huge disappointment. Few of the rooms are stylish, but rather, well just junky. I was looking forward to another look at French style in France, not just the interpretation of such in America. This is a coffee table book for those who have little design sense.

5 out of 5 stars Elle Decor: Grand Book of French Style.......2005-01-21

I have many books on style and decor, but this is by far one of my favorites. I love that it includes many facets of French style, not just the ubiquitous, American stereotype of what "French" looks like. Chapter headings read: "Provincial," "Atlantic," "Provence," and "Eclectic" (my favorite) to name a few. The back of the book is dedicated to showcasing the homes of a few Parisian fashion and interior designers, an addition that I quite enjoyed. If you're looking to redecorate or just love looking, this book is for you!

      2 out of 5 stars French Designers.......2002-03-02

I felt that this book was a nice collection of work by French designers. It depicted various French designers work in various styles. It did not however show French style. This was what I was hoping to see.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Interior Design Student.......2007-01-12

For anyone who wants a basic, practical, concise, no nonsense understanding of color theory, this is the book for you. I found the examples in Chapter 3 most helpful when I designed rooms with specific color schemes. It defined each scheme type, breaking down the cool and warm tones in each and showed full pages of examples for each category. Color being such an integral component of our everyday lives, this book is definitely a necessary addition to a reference library for any color applications such as interior/exterior structure, gardening, and wardrobe design.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty pics, not much else.......2007-09-04

The book is lovely, but it could've been so much better if it had more desciptions of what you're looking at. Instead, it's full of little phrases that may be helpful, but they are also somewhat pithy. I wish I had purchased a couple of magazine subscriptions instead.

5 out of 5 stars Informative and Inspirational.......2006-07-28

I love looking at House Beautiful books. I find the pictures to be inspirational. However, I usually don't think the text is very informative. I was pleasantly surprised to find House Beautiful 750 Designer Secrets to be an exception to the rule. It does contain beautiful photographs, but the "secrets" are useful and/or inspirational comments by designers. I have to admit I don't recognize the names of most of them, but I find the information to be consistent with other interior design/decoration books I have read. The quotes may not always be particulary earthshattering, but there were enough good ones to justify giving House Beautiful 750 Designer Secrets a 5. Out of 750 quotes you are bound to find something that is useful to you!

Now, just to give you a clear picture of what the book does and does not have to offer: no where is there a set of explicit instructions for how to incoporate the comments dirtectly to your home, but that is not the intention of the book. It is suppose to make you think for yourself how to add your own sense of style to your house. The book is set up so that there is a picture or two on a page and quotes by several different designers. The pictures illustrate the comments. I choose the following quotes because I thought that they are good advice and/or they made me rethink how I decorate my rooms.

"The most important thing is what you feel when you walk into a room." Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz

"Not interfering with views is decorating 101." Scott Salvator

"You don't need a lot of elements to create a dynamic effect." Jeffrey Marks

"Anchor a large room with a sense of symmetry." (quote from the author).

"I edit rigourously for scale, form, and color." Celeste Cooper

"Incorporate a common thread-such as a neutral color-to unify electric furnishings." Kelly Harmon

The one drawback to the book for some people might be that the pictures portray a similar style of decoration. If you like a mix of modern and antique, you will probably like the book, but those who like other styles, may or may not enjoy the pictures in the book. However, I think that the information given by the designers applies to any style.

4 out of 5 stars Would Like More Photos.......2004-07-05

This really explained the mysteries of color wheels, chroma and values, monotone color schemes and all the color terms that always mystified me in decorating books.
In some cases it was a little difficult to see the range of colors in the photos or the sample rooms were a bit bizarre. That distracted from understanding how a real person could use tetrad or discordant colors. I certainly wouldn't want a room looking like some they showed.
Overall it was helpful, I just wanted more room photos showing how some of the color schemes look when applied.

5 out of 5 stars practical (and inspiring) guide.......2002-05-27

I went to the public library and looked through dozens of books before choosing three to buy. This was one of the three. The author first introduces color theory -- basic (attributes, temperature, mixing) and advanced (color interaction, hierarchy, proportion, harmony) -- and then moves on to schemes (monotonic, monochromatic, analogous, complementary, discordant). The second (and lengthier) part of the book contains 36 color photographs illustrating the various schemes, each accompanied by more than a few alternative color chip palettes.

I learned a lot and enjoyed doing so. Great photos!

(The other two books I chose at the library were C. Barnes's Color for Your Home and J. Miller's Color: Period and Regional Style From Around the World.)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent explanation of color theory.......1999-12-16

At last a book where color theory is well and fully explained! They cover what tints, shades, pastels and other terms used to describe and build colors. Excellent!
