Beautiful.......2007-02-19

As others have noted here before, this book is delightful! It's a great read for a child whose family is growing and may feel uncertain about where she fits into her mother's life and love. I bought this book years ago simply because I love the illustrations by Pamela Lofts, but when my sister found out she was pregnant with her second child I knew it would be a great story to share with her first son. Lofts' color pencil artwork is reason enough to buy this book--pair that with the work of master storyteller Mem Fox and you can't lose.

Wonderful and Touching Story!.......2007-01-03

I had this book back when I was in college and studying to be a teacher. Recently my daughter started Kindergarten and her teacher read this book to all of the parents at back to school night. It brought tears to my eyes and I went home and ordered a new copy for my daughter. Mem Fox is one of my favorite children's authors and this book is a very touching story about a little Koala who is looking for her mother's continued love and affection.

This is a lovely book for young readers, not only because the story and pictures are sweet, simple, and engaging, but because it is important that children feel loved and not mistake fewer reassurances from the mother for lack of affection. This is an especially great book for children who are about to lose that valued only-child status--Lou's feelings are common among children with new siblings. It is not challenging or particularly rousing as far as stories go, but then I do not think that is its intent. It creates a warm sense of comfort and peace.

This story is of a little koala. The littie koala thinks that her mom does not like her. She thinks that because her mother got three koala baby. I like this story because I learned that if you mom you still love all your kids. I will recommend to others so they can learn a lesson.

"Koala Lou" is the story of a young koala by the same name. Everyday her mother looks at her and says, "Koala Lou, I DO love you!" However, after Koala Lou's mother gave birth to other koalas, she became too busy to express her feelings for her oldest child. Thus, Koala Lou joins the Bush Olympics, hoping to not only win first place, but her mother's affections as well.
Like others who are not the only child in the family, Koala Lou's feelings mirrored my own. Before my baby brother was born, I was the center of attention. My parents always attended to my every need, whether it was something as basic as food or something as random as my sudden impulses to go to the park and play on the swings. My parents provided me with whatever I wanted. But most importantly, they paid a lot of attention to me. Yes, I was a spoiled little girl. That all changed when my baby brother was born. At first, I felt happy and excited about having a new family member. He was so cute with his chubby cheeks and tiny toes. How could I not love him? But then I realized that he was stealing the limelight away from me. No longer did relatives come over to tell me how adorable I was wearing my dress and bow in my hair. Instead, they lavished their attention on my brother. It didn't take long for me to feel left out as my parents followed suit and made my little brother the center of their world. Or at least it seemed that way. Now that I am older, I know that they were merely trying to raise him like they had raised me- providing him whatever he needed no matter what. They did not mean to make me feel neglected, and although my parents may not say it out loud, I know that deep down, their hearts scream "Lisa, I DO love you!"

This is the perfect book for a child who may feel alienated by the birth of a baby brother or sister. The child can relate the story to his/her own life. He/She may feel better knowing that there are others who feel the same way when there is a new addition to the family. Additionally, it will help the child understand that mom and dad have, and always will, love him/her no matter what happens, even if they may not always express their love for him/her out loud. It might also serve as a meaningful reminder to parents that they should always let their children know how much they care about them from time to time.

If you are a fan of Fox's other works, this is definitely a must-have! As with one of her earlier works, "Time for Bed", this book also depicts the close relationship between the mother and child through its storyline and beautiful illustrations. Some of her books, including this one, are also known for teaching valuable lessons. While Fox's "Whoever You Are" teaches children to accept those who may seem different from them, "Koala Lou" shows a child that parents will always love their children, although they may not always say it.

Two thumbs up to Mem Fox for another job well done!

It is not surprising, considering the fact that Lynn Allen is the Technical Evangelist for Autodesk and that she meets with thousands of AutoCAD users every year, that once again her book is packed to the ceiling with fantastic tips, insights, tricks and strategies for putting AutoCAD in high gear. Great Book for seasoned AutoCAD users!.......2007-08-18

I have been using AutoCAD since 1992, after the first couple years of using AutoCAD, I stopped learning new tricks and learning better ways of using AutoCAD because I was able to do my job with the set of AutoCAD skills I have. This book helps me brush up my CAD skills and taught me many new tricks to be more efficient. It was never too late to teach an old dog new tricks!

What makes this book terric?.......2006-04-05

The book is terrific, no doubt about that. However, I am so disappointed about the 2 reviews, which missed the whole point: What makes this book terrific? The answer? Not the pictures! Definitely not. It is the text.

First, it is a good textbook. It tells you exactly what lofts are. Lots of books about lofts only show you tons and tons of "amazing" pictures without a clear definition. Pictures are great. But it is also easy to miss the soul of lofts behind those pictures. Some people after viewing all the pictures still do not get the idea of what makes certain space a loft. Besides this, this book also tells you the history and the future of lofts.

Technically, this book is a manual for someone who wants to build a loft from a shell. It covers all the practical information you need to know ranging from location, structural issues, money, time, to soft decorative ideas and even feng-shui. It provides not only the good and exicting stuff about lofts but also the drawbacks, pitfalls, things to noice. It gives you a realistic and balanced view. The authors really knows lofts and are very very hands-on. Due to its pragmatic nature, the book focuses more on the hard side (i.e., building process) than the soft design process.

Ironically, one thing I am not quite satisfied is the pictures. Though they are nice, they are fragmented and are selected to make the pages look nice. I prefer showing some cool lofts (from those pictures), their total layout, design, and floorplan to get a complete view.

Excellent book showing great photos of spaces that its what I was looking for, it shows you how to save space and great floor, windows, bathrooms designs for all your needs in a loft.

Not an Easter Bilby Adventure but A Good Read None the Less.......2007-09-21

This story by the successful author of many children's book classics such as Possum Magic and Koala Lou cleverly cashes in on the Australian Easter Bilby legend that has grown over the years through the selling of chocolate bilbies to raise money to save the endangered bilby from extinction. The book however has nothing at all to do with Easter or the Easter Bilby but the title and cover illustration cleverly catch the eye of this market! The illustrator Pamela Lofts has again done a brilliant job with her unique style (sort of realistic but not entirely so with human traits for the animals thrown in).

In Hunwick's Egg a mysterious egg arrives in the Australian desert during a storm. Hendwick a bilby after ensuring it belongs to no other animal immediately takes possession. As it becomes more and more obvious the egg will never hatch the other Australian wildlife become increasingly concerned about their friend. Hendwick knows something they don't know though!

If you have fallen in love with bilbies through the illustrations and want to help save the real ones before they are wiped from the planet go to easterbilbydotcomdotau (replace the word dot with full stops Amazon doesn't post reviews with other websites). Or alternatively if you're in Australia visit real bilbies at David Fleay Wildlife on the Gold Coast who run a breeding and research program where you can also make donations to ensure their future existence!

I'm a fan of Mem Fox. I use her books in my class. This one, Hunwick's Egg,is a little disappointing. The main character finds an egg and we all expect it to hatch. But it doesn't and I missed the point of the book.If you like Mem Fox's books, then give it a try.

Great Story, Great Illustrations.......2006-05-09

My aunt in Australia sent this book for my daughter's 1st Christmas and it has become one of my favorites to read. Since my daughter is only 5 months old, I try to find books with nice simple sentences (not too wordy) and captivating pictures. This book is beautifully illustrated with unusual animals and tells a sweet story. My daughter enjoys it, and from my perspective, it's much more interesting than a lot of baby books--important since I read it over and over again.

This book is obviously meant for a bit older child, but I wanted to point out that it is also a good one for babies. She will be able to enjoy it for a long time.

How could I have missed HUNWICK until now? He is a rabbit-eared Bandicoot, one of an endangered species, familiarly known in Australia as the BILBY. *Aussie* reviewer "LIN" won me over by suggesting that "Hunwick's Egg" would be a great Easter gift. Hunwick and his mysterious egg become very special friends but the egg does not hatch.

They are scrutinized by a collection of the weirdest animals you ever yearned to hug: a cockatoo, an echidna (resembling a porcupine), and the hairiest of emus who could benefit from a bit of *Bryll Cream* . . . Hunwick is all heart and reaches out to readers with the most irresistible eyes to ever appear on your radar screen! But still the egg does not hatch. The plant life is gorgeous, drawn ever so delicately in watercolor pencils. I am most captivated by a plant resembling the eucalyptus, and other green wildflowers.

After referring to my dictionary I felt tricked into falling for a RAT, of all things. I don't want to believe what my faithful reference says about this darling creature!

The more important reality is that HAPPINESS CAN ERUPT FROM THE MOST UNEXPECTED OF RELATIONSHIPS. It is remarkable how loneliness vanishes when you can share your burrow. Reviewer mcHAIKU recommends that you make sure you have an Easter Basket large enough to accommodate this precious book.

Hunwick's Egg.......2006-03-22

A wonderful story of devotion! Mem Fox continues to be one of my favorite children's story tellers. Hunwick is a sweet little creature who remains loyal in spite of others' misgivings. The use of so many animals strange to the Americas makes the book even more wonderful, with delightful pictures to help with the story.

Mostly Modern.......2006-01-02

It features all kinds of lofts around the world - mostly modern but there is also mix of other styles. Photographs are big and there are plenty of them but quality ain't the sharpest. It's not greatest but as it comes with lots of pages to flip thru and price is right - it's nice to have.

My dream is to live in a Loft. And this book helped me get started on my research. I have already labeled and marked my favorite floor plans and styles. I am currently looking for a book that contains more information about costs and maintenance of lofts. Otherwise it's a great book to get an idea of lofts, what styles you may like and the history of lofts.

Coverage of Historical and Early Loft Treatment.......1998-10-12

As many readers of this title I was looking for interesting, creative, innovative use of loft space. The piece seems complete in its coverage of origin and early treatment. Lofts in several international urban settings are described and pictured. Floor plans for a representative number are presented at the conclusion. By now it has become fairly dated. Present day materials and treatments clearly be an important addition. Surely there has been great progress in the 12 years since the book was released. Secondly, "adventurous" lofts were not prevalent. A few several portrayals were bland and unexciting. However, the work seems to be one of the few available resources for those interested in the development of loft space.
