In Mexico in the early 1920s, a growing, collective social consciousness gave rise to a revolutionary furor focused on liberating the country's workers from harsh conditions and poverty. In 1921, Mexican artists Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros were all commissioned by the government to create educational paintings on the walls of public buildings. After that initial experience, they devoted themselves almost exclusively to painting these large-scale murals--forming the foundation of a movement that would last 50 years. The muralists' work took up the themes of society and revolution. Often the paintings depicted historical vignettes like the story of Cuernavaca and Morelos crossing the barranca, or Mexico's ancient Indians. They satirized contemporary society, created ideal visions of peaceful families, and built up dark, imposing industrial cityscapes then leveled them by depicting the debauchery and death of the capitalist industrialists.
The paintings themselves reflect diverse artistic influences--surrealism, cubism, and illustration, most notable among them. Their bold colors and strong imagery practically bound out of the 150 color plates in this book. Mexican muralist and scholar Desmond Rochfort lucidly traces the development of the movement to place the work in context and provides a solid history of each of the artists' social and artistic influences. This is an excellent overview of work that should appeal both to fans of the individual artists and Mexican art in general. --Jordana Moskowitz

The Big Three.......2005-03-09
Read the editorial reviews first and if you are still not convinced that this book does a good job covering the Big Three than get individual books on each. The text is outstanding and puts the works of art into a political context of the time period. The author is analytical, insightful and definitely well versed in the subject matter. There is an exhaustive bibliography, extensive endnotes on each chapter and spectacular reproductions on thick quality paper stock. There are historical photographs of public works in progress and a varity of camera angles of individual murals to show the enormity of the works. I have seen many of these murals on location and this book does an excellent job of portraying them as they are. When you see a Rivera fresco on a wall at the National Palace live or in this case from a pulled out camera angle and see the railing leading to the next floor being dwarfed by the images it is truly impressive. Looking at the details within the murals is the ultimate visual experience where you can get lost in the picture and the meaning. The closeups and details of individual segments are superior. This is art for the peoples public viewing brought directly to you from Mexico to hold in your hands and examine at your leisure. There are several good books out there on Mexican Murals but this one for the money is outstanding. The three artists each had a distictive style but each brought a unifying nationalistic approach to the walls of public buildings. Is one artist better than the other? You be the judge, everyone has their own favorite. If you are unfamiliar with the works of the Big Three than check it out, you are in for a treat.
ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I OWN!!.......2002-12-28
This is definitely one of the best books out there for anyone interested in Mexican art. Few books can inspire as much as this one, especially for people from Zapotlanejo, Jalisco. It's loaded with many pictures and chronicles the lives of these three muralistas and has in depth coverage of specific murals, i especially enjoyed the coverage on "History of Mexico" mural by Diego Rivera. This book is definitely worth the price and a great addition to any collection. Orale!

spraycan art.......2007-04-12
This book is one of the best documentations of world wide graffiti in its early years (mid 80's). Essential reading for any aspiring graffiti artist or art enthusiast in general. This book has served as inspiration to many artist alike.
Graphitte history .......2007-01-19
I gave this a x-mas gift to my 15 yr old son. He loved it
Classic!.......2005-09-21
This book was my first graffiti book i purchased in the middle of 90's and I have enjoyed a lot from the first day I got it. It has lots of graffiti photos around the world and if you dig colorful pieces made with old-school-style, this is a book you have to buy!
A work of major significance.......2004-05-29
As a public art historian, I recently revisited Spraycan Art. I am told that the sales on this book are approaching 200,000 copies. In 1987 it was the first look at the art form as it traveled out of the NYC subways and around the world and although writers today are more sophisticated with their mastery of the spray can and the imagery they create, the book is still very current in its look at the graffiti world and its place in the Hip Hop scene. It is remarkable to me how Chalfant and Prigoff came to know the key writers of those years, both nationally and internationally. Their contribution to the graf world as professional documentary photographers, authors and resource people has withstood the test of time. It is a must read for current writers, historians or just anyone interested in a unique art form created by youth. Interesting that the book named the art for all time.
Book Description
Michelangelo's frescoes in the Sistine Chapel-the great glory of Vatican art and one of the most treasured masterpieces of Western painting-provide a visual feast for art lovers in this magnificent, affordable new book. Presenting a complete survey of the restored Sistine Chapel frescoes from Creation scenes to the Last Judgment, the book includes a new text by a prominent American scholar. The stunning photographs, previously published by Abrams in two separate volumes, show brilliant details as well as large, overall views. No other one-volume work on the Sistine Chapel offers such a clear, concise introduction to this perennially popular subject.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing value.......2005-09-07
If you have an interest in art, or in Michelangelo in particular, this book should be part of your collection. The reproductions are remarkable (photos were taken after the Sistine Chapel ceiling had been cleaned), and I can't imagine a better book on the subject at this low price. I was amazed when the book arrived, because it is a substantial book for the price, and the photos are just beautiful. I visited the Sistine Chapel this summer, and ordered this book when I got home. I would highly recommend your having this book before a trip to Rome. Most of the images are far away when standing in the Sistine Chapel (the ceiling is high) so it's hard to see detail when looking at the real thing. Looking at these photos beforehand will give you an even greater appreciation of Michelangelo's genius.
Loved it!.......2004-04-15
This was a wonderful book at a really good price. The pictures are quite good, showing a lot of detail and clarity. The narrative is enjoyable as well. This book will make you want to go to Rome and see the real thing up close! (This is also a good book to read along with Ross King's "Michelangelo and the Pope's Ceiling.") Great for your coffee table or art history collection!

Product Description
Turning walls of a city into a giant sized painting is an idea that has been kicking around in history for a long, long time. This book documents mural art in both rural and urban Minnesota. These mural have been created by professional artists as well as sign painters and neighborhood amateurs who paint a wall as a group activity. After a recap of the history of mural painting Moira Harris maps out where each of the murals are with the photographic display. Brief biographies are included for the muralists that were known. The United State Information Agency selected Museum of the Streets to be a part of the "Visual Arts USA Exhibit" (1987), representing the best in American Publishing, and was exhibited in 50 countries throughout the world.
Book Description
First published in 1977, Toward a People's Art remains a classic study of the community-based mural movement that produced hundreds of large-scale wall paintings in the United States and Canada. The authors provide a comprehensive discussion of the muralists, the murals' effects on the community, and the funding these works received.
Those interested in art and social change will welcome this new edition, which represents an ongoing faith in the ideal of participatory democracy as the best way to confront the nation's social problems and in the potential of activist art to have long-term social impact. The introduction describes the era-the late 1960s-and a new afterword looks at the 1980s and 1990s and the continuing commitment to the community-engaged process of making public art.

Jose Clemente Orozco
ASIN: 0915478749 |
Book Description
The fresco that José Clemente Orozco painted in 1930 at Pomona College in Claremont, California, was both the artist's first work in the United States and the first Mexican mural in this country. As such, the Prometheus is a landmark in the history of the Mexican mural movement and of the art of the 20th century.
The four scholarly essays in this volume, written over a period of 43 years, bear eloquent testimony to the undimmed power of the Prometheus to intrigue, provoke, and inspire. Celebrating the college's acquisition of 17 preparatory drawings for the mural from the artist's family, the book is lavishly illustrated with Orozco's work and that of his contemporaries.
Customer Reviews:
Epic and powerful art.......2003-02-04
I was a little put back wondering how so much could be written about one piece of art; then again we're talking a monumental groundbreaking piece, Promethius. At first drawn to the colorful photographs of this fantastic public display I was mesmerized with the brilliance of color, slashing strokes of genius revealing the at once creator and destroyer Promethius. Larger than life, in epic proportions this mammoth contribution was created by one of the three master muralists of Mexico, Jose Clemente Orozco. The other two muralists being Siquieros and Rivera who would later follow suit and create murals in the United States. The color and black and white pictures of Orozco's art, including some from Mexcio, is worth the price of the book by itself. The book features four rather scholarly essays written over a span of forty-three years. These essays are considered the most important analytical writings on Promethius by Orozco. The book details the origins of this book, the problems and the success in producing a complimentary publication to the major exhibition that came to the United States in 2001of which I was fortunate enough to witness. The aquisition of the original drawings was a struggle but eventually the family relinquished the ownership so that the originals could be with the mural in Pomona College. One of the interesting controversies regarding Promethius was the fact that everything was massive and in colossol proportions, the muscled male nude had everything except for his genitalia which was missing. Throughout it's reign over the dining hall at Pomona College, since 1930, students have had protests over this issue and it has even resulted in vandalism. In spite of the controversy restoration has taken place to guard and preserve the original integrity of the masterpiece for future generations. Anyway the essays are interesting and thought provoking. Many angles are discussed that deal with the social and historical relevence of Promethius and as to why Orozco chose him. The actual reproduced art work is an amazing demonstration of brilliance. Many of his other works are featured and discussed as well. The collection of studies for the murals are exceptional embryonic manifestations of the inner workings of creativity. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the works of Jose Clemente Orozco.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent color photography, comprehensive overview.......1998-07-01
As one of the muralists shown in this book, I feel very honored to have been included. The content of this book and intent of the author Robin Dunitz ranks up with any textbook of art history. California has always been home to artists who dare to dream and a public who appreciates those artists. The book is full of color reproductions on every page, includes the history of murals, and has interviews and observations by some very incredible artists who paint large, colorful, and thought provoking images. I highly recommend this book to all who are interested in art outdoors.

Book Description
Correggio's depiction of the Virgin's Assumption into heaven, painted in the cupola of the Duomo of Parma, is widely viewed as one of the most inventive and influential fresco cycles of the Renaissance. Even so, the very elements that make the work so powerful--its lively iconography and its illusionism--have long been decried by critics for their apparent illegibility and lack of decorum. In the first book-length study of these frescoes in English, Carolyn Smyth counters such negative criticism by taking into account the viewer's in situ experience of the frescoes. In so doing, she offers a new reading that explores the artist's knowing use of figural perspective, the architectural and liturgical context, and the religious significance of the theme.
Aided by new photographs of the fresco, taken by Ralph Lieberman, Smyth leads the reader from the door of the cathedral to the apse, in order to examine the lay worshipper's experience from a series of partial views in the nave and the contrasting vistas of the clergy in the presbytery. As each of these separately revealed sequences of the cycle is discussed, new elements appear and are interpreted. The gestures, figural relationships, activities, and attributes visible from each viewpoint convey specific meanings that reveal, too, the most relevant aspect of the Assumption theme for the participant below. Not only the spatial communicativeness of the painting but also the affective warmth of Correggio's style are seen as means to celebrate Mary's redemptive role and its implications for the Christian audience.

Italian Frescoes: The Age of Giotto, 1280-1400
ASIN: 0226469603 |
Book Description
Looking at more than two hundred Italian medieval and Renaissance mural cycles, Lavin examines—with the aid of computer technology—the "rearranged" chronologies of familiar religious stories found therein.
"Like many masterpieces, Lavin's book builds upon a simple idea . . . it is possible to do a computer analysis of . . . visual narratives. . . . This is the first computer-based study of the visual arts of which I am aware that illustrates how those technologies can utterly transform the study of old master art. An extremely important book, one likely to become the most influential recent study of art of this period, The Place of Narrative is also a beautiful artifact."—David Carrier, Leonardo
"Covering over a millennium and dealing with the whole of Italy, Lavin makes pioneering use of new methodology employing a computer database . . . [and] novel terminology to describe the disposition of scenes of church and chapel walls. . . . We should recognize this as a book of high seriousness which reaches out into new areas and which will fruitfully stimulate much thought on a neglected subject of very considerable significance."—Julian Gardner, Burlington Magazine
Customer Reviews:
Interesting but not perfect.......2000-06-14
Read my review with the following caveat: I have absolutely no training in art history and most of my reading in art has been in the field of icons.
This book is useful in providing a structuring principle for the visual art in Italian Churches - I had previously only seen materials about the organization of the visual art in Orthodox Churches. I appreciated the time range of the book as it covers both the conquest of the Eastern Church by Islam (sending Eastern Christians fleeing to the West) and the split between the Orthodox and Catholic Churches. The description / interpretation of the narrative scenes is sufficiently detailed to teach a neophyte how to recognize the event being portrayed. After the world tour of art from Assisi, the section on Assisi gained clarity as I had actually seen art from a church discussed. I would have preferred more colored plates and could have done without some of the detail of the computer work supporting the book. But the latter may be important to the intended audience.
looks good but disappointing.......1999-12-21
This book reads somewhat like a badly written PhD thesis. It results from collecting quantative information about religious cycles in churches, shoving them into a mathematical tool, and calling the results a book. The subject of narrative in art is fascinating, for an insightful book see: Andrews, Lew. Story and Space in Renaissance Art : The Rebirth of Continuous
