4 out of 5 stars For Beginners Only..........2007-04-14

Microprocessors and Microcomputers by Ronld Tocci provides an good introduction to the microprocessor world. It does a very good job at explaing what the different components of a microprocessor based system does and how they fit together. This book is not for someone who is resonably knowledgable about the subject (i.e. you have already built and programed a simple microcontroller or microprocessor based system). The more experienced need to find a title targeting their specific processor of choice.

5 out of 5 stars Good!.......2001-07-11

We used this as a textbook at the Univ. of Mich. Overall this is a good introduction to microcontrollers/processors. Authors kept discussion at the 'logic gates' level with an introduction to the Motorolla HC11 programming. Pace is gentle and just enough detailed for introduction to the subject.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Superb PC Reference.......2005-11-12

I am an EET studying for certifications. Also I use this book for a general troubleshooting reference. This is one of the best out there. I have several others and most just ramble about the technologies as an overview but do not get into applications needed. Meyers conveys the information as he is addressing people who are working in the real world. Good diagrams and the book is very well put together. Hey it is McGraw Hill. A top notch Publisher. A+

5 out of 5 stars Great Book, Great Bargain.......2005-08-19

While I would not count on the book to teach me everything I must know to pass the A+ exams, I would definitely trust it to give me a strong foundation. Meyers includes all the basics and then some, and he goes into detail in a manner that should cater to almost all experience levels. The thing I liked the best about this book was how easy it was to read from beginning to end. Highly recommended to those who are looking for a place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Very Readable with Lots of Detail.......2005-07-07

The text is well presented with about 40% white space on each page. The important items in each topic are highlighted and reviewed at the end of the chapter. My only suggestion for improvement would be to provide an answer key. Each question and key word has the page the topic was covered and hopefully the answer is there staring you in the face.

The author's tone is that of a "regular" person talking to a "regular" person. The CD that came with book is excellent, but simply not enough questions to feel comfortable passing the A+ exam on the first try.

Several schools in the local area use this exact text for instructor lead classes. I'd buy this text (expensive !! like a college text) but well worth it. Not too much detail for a tech, but more than a newbie would know going in.

5 out of 5 stars A #1 effort from the #1 authority on the subject!.......2003-12-10

We all know that Mike Meyers is go to man for A+ and that is All-In-One Guide is a huge success and that a great number of people, including myself, owe him a huge bit of thanks for helping us to pass the exams. Now imagine taking the best parts of his guides and break it down even further and that is exactly what has been done here in this book.

The book is an excellent study tool for passing the A+ exams as both the Core and OS exam are covered in the 950 plus pages. One thing that could be added in future updates is a few more exercises. And once again as with other books from Mike, this one has material I have not seen anywhere else before. I also found that this book is current with the newest exams, which is another plus.

The thing that has always impressed me is the way that Mike Meyers can explain any topic. He is able to convey the concepts and ideas without boring the reader; in fact several students in my current A+ Class have found this manual to clear up some confusion from the study guides we are currently using.

The cd included has several practice exams and some videos you can use as additional study tools. The Learn Key Videos does a hardware check before allowing you to run the video demos, which is a good thing since 1 of my machines was not hardware ready. As with the written material, Mike is even better in the video segments with his use of real life situations and examples.

If you are just getting started and need a first step in the right direction, than let this book be the pace is all begins. Overall just another superb effort from Mike Meyers.

As David Pogue notes in the foreword to Mac Upgrade and Repair Bible, "The average Windows user must buy a new machine every two years; the average Mac fan keeps a Mac model running for five." One of the reasons that Macs outlive their competitors is their expandability and upgradability. With everything from software tips to detailed explanations of Mac hardware, the Mac Upgrade and Repair Bible will keep your Mac on the cutting edge for years to come (and save you some money in the process). But more importantly, author Todd Stauffer is concerned with personalizing Macs, adding bits of hardware and software that will allow you to record CDs, improve 3-D performance, or add a cable modem. The first two sections of this mammoth book consider the issues involved in making an upgrade decision and then engage the specific needs of a range of upgrades (from scanners to networking tools). The last two sections focus on troubleshooting--avoiding (or recovering from) bombs, freezes, or crashes. Throughout, Stauffer deftly moves from basic explanations to more complex technical matters when he compares, for example, IDE and SCSI hard-drive technology. Black-and-white photos accompanying the text are certain to take the jitters out of under-the-hood work. This is very much a hands-on guide for the serious user. The enclosed CD-ROM includes over 50 freeware, shareware, and demo tools such as Memory Mapper, CacheSaver, TattleTech, and Fonts Manager. --Patrick O'Kelley

5 out of 5 stars Stupendous MacMadness Within!.......2002-03-30

Tremendous Trememndous. This book helped me upgrade my old SE-30 for use as a networked print server in my apartment. It got me set for networking 7 computers together on a LAN, including the fun ways that Macs talk with Windoze boxes and a Read Hat machine. I love this book!

Shortcuts, ways to speed up the machine, preemptive troubleshooting tips and more interesting info than you could ever retain.

5 out of 5 stars So good, I based a class on it!.......2001-08-17

This book covers most everything the wanna be Mac tech needs to know to be able to get into their system intelligently, without making expensive mistakes. It's not preachy or over technical from my standpoint, and it makes a great reference for when you need to tackle a problem yourself, rather than spending a lot of money for someone like me to come out and fix your computer.

I like the bredth and depth of the information given so much, that I am going to use it as the class text in my free Mac Troubleshooting class at Santa Ana College

5 out of 5 stars better than Apple Service Source!.......2000-01-09

This book is very good. It is one of the few books that is comprehesive of the entire Mac line (from the original mono-MAC to the iMAC). So many Mac books now only focus on the current models forgetting the earlier ones.

It is arranged by topic (memory, hd, input devices, etc.) and very easy to use. It is also suprisingly accurate. Twice I have found the information in the book's spec tables to be accurate where Apple's own ServiceSource specs were incorrect. (If only I had access to where they get their info!) :-)

Want to work on Macs? Get this book!

5 out of 5 stars Another winner from Todd.......1999-12-13

If your Mac's out of warranty, you have nothing to lose by trying to fix it yourself. Stauffer's the man when it comes to clear explanations of needed repairs. I replaced the hard drive and CD-ROM drive following his book's advice. The book paid for itself.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good, a nice refresher.......2005-07-05

After taking Cisco CCNA 1 and gaining a summer job at a school district, I have found this book very helpful. Though the information is taught in CCNA and A+ classes is the same, this book is a nice refresher and good step by step problem solving guide nevertheless.

2 out of 5 stars Well looks like we got burned.......2002-04-16

I BOUGHT THIS BOOK THINKING I WAS GOING TO BE ENLIGHTED WITH SOME ADVANCED TROUBLESHOOTING KNOWLEDGE. I AM A PC TECH AND THIS BOOK JUST GOES INTO DETAIL ABOUT ALL THE COMPONENTS THAT MAKE UP THE SYSTEM AND THEIR HISTORY.IF YOU ARE A+ CERTIFIED YOU ALREADY LEARNED ALL THIS INFORMATION AND YOU`LL JUST LOOSE INTEREST RIGHT FROM THE START BECAUSE THE WRITER IS JUST REHASHING ALL THIS SAME INFO.THIS BOOK IS 713 PAGES AND THE LITTLE BIT OF TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION IN THE BOOK WOULD FILL NO MORE THAN FIFTY PAGES,JUST A LOT FLUFF SO THEY CAN MAKE THE BOOK AS THICK AS THEY CAN.THIS BOOK MIGHT ACTUALLY BE SOME GOOD FOR A PERSON WHO MAYBE IS JUST STARTING OUT,AND WANTS TO LEARNED EVERYTHING FROM THE BEGINING AND GETTING READY TO LEARN A+.IF YOU ARE ALREADY A TECHNICIAN YOU`LL JUST GET BURNED.ALOT OF AUTHORS SEEM TO BE TRYING TO MAKE A QUICK BUCK WHENEVER POSSIBLE.
"PC TECHNICIAN BLACKBOOK" THERE ARE NO SECRETS HIDDEN IN THIS BOOK GUY`S.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book with Great Tips.......2002-04-13

There are many things in this book of interest to either the beginner or the experienced technician. I found the background information to be informative without going way into the history and technical details of legacy gear. It had just enough of the past to make the present meaningful. The troubleshooting tips included many things I would not have thought to even ask and cleared up some things I was confused about. I recommend this to anyone wanting to know more about their computer and how to keep it running.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the money.......2002-04-05

The cover says "Ideal for A+ certified technicians," which I am not, but I could imagine they'd be even more frustrated with this book that I am.

I bought this book after acquiring a large collection of older PC parts. I thought it would be handy to have a troubleshooting reference nearby while working with the parts. I've had this book a number of months now, built 2 fully operational computers from scratch, and have not found this book helpful ONCE. I'd recommend saving your money and buying another book or searching Google Groups for your answers.

Just to be fair, there is a lot of interesting information about how certain technologies evolved and is fairly comprehensive. (Such as full page pictures of what midtower cases and toolless screws look like.) But when it comes to troubleshooting issues while working on a computer, it's just about worthless. (Plot spoiler: just about all the "Immediate Solutions" sections tell you to check the cables, or something that obvious.)

I'll admit I'm a software technician by trade and enjoy fiddling with stuff. This book may very well be good for the novice or intermediate user. But if you've built computers before or know your way around troubleshooting an issue, look elsewhere for a hardware reference.

5 out of 5 stars THE book for technical assistance.......2001-09-03

This book is as up to date as possible considering the fast changing technology and publishing times. It is a huge book and covers everything. It has answered a hundred questions I didn't even know to ask. The detail with which it answers these questions is wonderful. I only hope the author will see fit to give us a yearly update supplement.

4 out of 5 stars good reference..........2001-10-19

the book is a great reference guide for pci-x
(a relatively new standard).
everything about this computer architecture is explained in details.the only limit is the purpose of this book, that remain in the bounds of a reference guide and not a programming & architecture guide.
the differences between pci and pci-x are clearly explained.
if you don't know anything about standard pci architecture and assembly programming, this book is not for you; but
if you are a system designer interested in pci-x, this book is a must.

3 out of 5 stars Overall a good book, but lacks concrete interfacing examples.......1999-07-19

This book contains lots of examples and source code so students/readers can get a firm grasp on the programming constructs of the HC11 language. Yet,it lacks in it's examples with interfacing. There are no examples that would show one how to actually wire completly an external device to the EVBU board.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Time or Your Money.......2001-05-15

Do yourself a favor and don't waste your time or your money. To answer the question "Why is this book so expensive?" I will tell you from first hand knowledge that this book is being used at a certain educational institution where the author resides and teaches. This is how someone can be somewhat successful at selling 282 pages of errors bound in a cover for $110. If your lucky enough to have the answer key to the questions at the end of each chapter your in for another disappoinment. Over 90% of the answers are wrong especially any of the questions dealing with code. After fixing the problems with the wrong answers I soon learned that the professor was marking my right answers wrong because he/she was going straight from the answer key. This is just a quick word of advice to anyone who even thinks about using this book as an educational text.

1 out of 5 stars Poor editing anf proofing of content........1998-05-04

This book has numerous errors and is poorly organized. The software that comes supplied with the book does not work on many computers and the publisher is unresponsive when the problems have been brought to their attention. This book was definitely rushed to press. It is quite a shame that this book with such a high price tag was ever published.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2006-06-30

I have been building, maintaining and upgrading my own computers since 1997, and I have had Wynn Rosch's Hardware Bible in my library as an invaluable reference during all that time. I know some people say that the Word of Rosch is not always completely up to date. It may not be, but neither am I. I've seen too many pioneers with arrows in their backs. I never jump at the latest and greatest in computer technology. I wait until new things prove themselves out in usage. This latest edition of the Word is now helping me in my double task of replacing an old, tired HDD and phasing out the cumbersome ZipDrive I have been using for backups. All I need to know is there in black and white just as it always has been. Great book!

3 out of 5 stars Could be much better with some editing........2005-01-02

I was hoping this book would be as good as "Upgrading and Repairing PC's", but it doesn't measure up. The depth of detail on certain topics is not well balanced.

For instance, the author refers to floppy discs as necessary to modern computers as an appendix, but spends a many pages detailing it as well and it's all but obsolete relatives like the Iomega Zipdisk. Granted the zipdisk was relevant in the 1990's but it is irrelevant today. OTOH hard disc construction and it's evolution, a far more interesting and relevant topic today is not written in such deep detail.

Many dated topics pertaining to only MS-DOS need to edited down to be more concise. A detailed breakdown of all the registers in a CMOS clock chip, and all the different frequencies produced by the system timer is not needed by the average computer programmer and system builder today. It almost seems the newer the technology, the fewer the pages devoted to it.

Some information is downright wrong. The author has a limited understanding of digital video and makes many inaccurate statements regarding that topic. For all pages in the book devoted to technical minutia, I wouldn't trust it to be entirely authoritative.

Although this book is giant sized and expensive, many pages are wasted. Seperating the interesting bits of information from all the long winded filler is a chore. I would recommend browsing "Upgrading and Repairing PC's" over this book.

5 out of 5 stars For those looking for the overall Hardware book this is it........2003-05-24

In over 15 years of I work I am always looking for new material and books relating to the latest technology both hardware and software.

This is the first time I have looked at the Hardware Bible and as a Computer Technical Instructor this book has already come in handy for a couple of A+ classes I am teaching.

While the book is not written to any specific exam, I found that is would definitely help with the A+ and CST exams. The author's extensive hardware knowledge is evident throughout the book.

One thing that impressed me throughout the book was the author not only gives detailed information about the most current technology, but also gives you a firm background on older technologies as well.

While the book is the "Hardware" bible, there is far more than just hardware information, you'll also find TCP/IP and the internet, as well as memory management included in the overall coverage.

I found this to be a fairly complete text to work with. You can also register online and find both the 5th and 6th editions available. About the only thing that wasn't included was a cd with hardware utilities, but looking at what you do get this is a minor drawback. Overall this book is a certainly worth the look.

2 out of 5 stars adequate.......2002-08-25

I've owned the Mueller and Minasi books previously. Recnetly I decided to go for a change of heart and try Rosch's but I was severely disappointed in the comparison: Rosch does not have the depth of the other two nor is it as well written. This could be a really good book for a beginner BUT I don't think with this book you will progress beyond that stage.
Get Mueller's Upgrading and Repairing or Minasi's gold standard instead. Minasi's is the best on the subject for a beginner to an advanced hardward engineer who needs to keep up on the ever changing hardware environment; Mueller's fills in some technician gaps; Rosch is a distant third.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book for the novice...........2001-04-05

I was a complete, absolute novice knowing nothing at all about PCs. This book is not just about instructions on how to make your own PC. It gives really important history and background information which is absolutely vital and fundamental to any novice trying to get a good grasp of the subject. By the time it came down to actually building my own PC, I had as good a grasp of the subject at this level as the author himself without having read any other book on the subject. It gives you all the information YOU need to be able to make your OWN judgement about what YOU WANT to build. Best of all, the author has written it in such a personal fashion that you will feel he is actually talking to you and you can imagine him working away in his garage - enabling you to see and appreciate things in a crystal clear way. It left me absolutely mesmerised. Every technical book is only valid for as long as the technology mentioned in it is also valid when you read it. Since computer technology moves really, really fast, the reader should consider some information that was current when the book was written to look at it from a historical point of view - this does not negate the validity of the information in any way. The author makes this fact clear by mentioning phrases like "By the time you read this...." followed by his comments about how things might have changed when you are reading the book at your time - and quite often he is spot on about his predictions, which I am sure needed a bit of digging. The flow of his language is wonderful and I feel sorry for those who criticise it because their first language isn't English - mine isn't either. The only matter you should be careful of is when you read about binary numbers but thats really to do with software at a core level - something that really did not concern me at this level. I have now made 2 PCs, connected to a third, made my own network, and studying MCSE to change my career. Congratulations on a book well conceived, thought out, planned, executed and written!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Author Gives His Own Book 5 Stars ?!?.......2001-01-26

The book itself is so-so; it has some good information in it, nothing great, and you will certainly need to consult other sources, in print or on the Web, or get help from an expert, before you're able to build a fully functional computer.........

4 out of 5 stars History and intent.......2000-11-24

I have grown up with the author's books, on building a PC. Considering that from 386/486 there was not much around. I have still his 486, Pent II, when I get around to it get his Pent III.

I gave my son his earlier works to get started, and with a 2 week "intern" in a PC shop, he is now proudly showing me stuff. Granted his books are for the beginner/intermediate but there is just not many books out there who even attempt this. By the time they get printed, we see the next generation pent IV/giga herz which I hope the author deems to do that as well. Based on his start with some hands on and books like this and starting college he now can understand what is going on. In fact he was looking at Aubrey's Pent II book, so I will put the printout rating for Aubrey's Pent III book out, and hope there will be a similiar book on Pent IIII/AMD gigahertz forthcoming including the new memory, getting harddrives that are now 40-60 gigs.

His pent II book was discussing sub 10 gig drives. Anyway keep up the great work. Perhaps I will get a copy of the pent III and let my sone review it, since he is now overclocking his pent III putting cooling fans everywhere. Carey

1 out of 5 stars Since when do authors get to rank their own books?.......2000-09-23

This book was a major disappointment, but I can only blame myself for this. I looked at the star ranking, but didn't read the reviews. I should have, because it would have helped me much better after reading the reviews. I am somewhat savy, but I was disappointed by this book because it didn't talk to me on a level of what type of product (or brands) would be best for me depending on my budget. For example, besides price, what makes the difference in components I pick? Is it speed? Will they work better? Some products that I buy might not work better if I buy the wrong companion component... this book didn't tell me that.

His writing leaves much to be desired. I should have never strayed from Upgrading and Repairing PC's by Scott Mueller. I just bought ISBN 0789723034 and it's great.

Who does the author think he is giving his 1-star book 5 stars?

2 out of 5 stars Build Your Own Pentium III PC.......2000-06-21

As with most of the "build your own" books on the market, this one is pretty out of date. Also, the book supplies you with very little information which would help you select which components will best meet your needs and which components work best together (ie- which motherboards, video graphics boards ...). Basically this book just explains in very breif detail how the system all works together.

The most difficult thing in building your own system IMHO is deciding which components will best meet your needs and will work well together. I did not get any helpful info from this book along these lines. In fact the author does not even seem particularly knowledgeable about the subject matter in the book. I think I could have wrote a better book and I do not even consider myself a computer geek.

Bottom line, I waisted my money...

3 out of 5 stars Good book, but not among the best. Beware inaccuracies........1999-01-22

Although this is basically an good book, it is not in the same class as Stephen J. Bigelow's "Troubleshooting, Maintaining & Repairing Pcs, 2nd Ed." or "Scott Mueller's Upgrading and Repairing Pcs, 10th Ed." As an example of Johnson and Stauffer's inaccuracies, note the discussion about types of mice in Chapter 5 where they write: "A bus mouse typically uses an IBM PS/2 style connector ..." and "A bus mouse, when connected to a PS/2 port...". Compare these statements with Bigelow's care (page 834) in distinguishing the bus mouse with a 9-pin DIN (circular) connector from a PS/2 mouse with a 6-pin DIN (circular) connector. Therefore, one could NEVER connect a bus mouse to a PS/2 connector. Note also that Johnson and Stauffer state "Many PS/2 mice come with adapters that plug into the PS/2 connector and turn into serial connectors." The authors fail to warn the reader that a PS/2 mouse can NEVER be attached to the serial port using such an adapter if the design of the mouse does not include the special detection circuits that permit the mouse to determine if it is connected to a PS/2 port or a serial port. Most PS/2 mice DO NOT contain such detection circuits. The book by Johnson and Stauffer is certainly easier to read, but the average reader would be better off to spend additional money to purchase the Bigelow book. The result would be that that of owning a book that is harder to read, but the knowledge found therein is more accurate and more complete and therefore worth the additional effort required to read the book.
