Customer Reviews:
Too Important to Be Out of Print.......2004-12-31
I borrowed this remarkable book from the library, and it's a treasure. Many years ago Sister Parrish, the chintz-loving society decorator who helped Jackie redo the White House, teamed up with Albert Hadley, a polite genius of timeless, clean design and proportion.
The result of this union of opposites was a partnership made in decorating heaven. In fact, the "marriage" produced wonderful offspring: Marriette Himes Gomez and Mark Hampton both got their start here.
If you'd like to see how many of the top American names of the 20th century lived, Jackie, Nelson Rockefeller, Babe Paley, it's all here. And if you'd like in depth exposure to the design principles of two American masters, you couldn't ask for a better source.
What a shame this out of print book costs $250. If it were $50 I'd buy it in a one-click minute. Attention book publishers, you need to reissue this book for the design-starving masses.
Brilliant book for the serious student of interior design!.......1999-02-24
A beautiful book, certainly more valuable than a mere 'coffee table' book. If one is serious about interior design, seeing and understanding what these amazing people did to the art is imperative. The photographs show rooms that will stand the test of time and make you salivate over the treasures. What an incredible legacy they have, american design owes them beyond measure.

Not a good choice.......2007-01-07
This book was a huge disappointment. It offers nothing but some drawings with dimensions. There are no hints, no instructions, nothing. If I weren't fairly skilled at figuring these things out, this book would be a total waste to me.
Lots of Designs.......2005-09-18
Plenty of ideas to choose from with lots of illustrations. Some building skills would be helpful. Simple kits to build can be found at houses4birds.com
Just an OK Book!!.......2005-05-14
Expect to use a Tablesaw or Miter Saw when using this book. There is an acknowledgement at the beginning of the book, but no other text throughout other than the dimensions of each house. No cutting recommendations, etc., just dimensioned drawings. Don't expect too much from this book.
Even the most novice woodworker will have no difficulty.......2002-02-11

Book Description
Austin Powers mercilessly parodied the look, but the films' enormous success proved the enduring influence of mid-60s London fashion.
In April 1966, Time famously touted London as the new world center of style. Forty years later, this book reconsiders the roles played by designers like Mary Quant, celebrities like Twiggy, boutiques like Biba, photographers like David Bailey, magazines, and filmmakers in promoting a new, more relaxed, more colorful way of dressing that reverberated around the world. Illustrated with key pieces from the V&A's fashion collection plus contemporary photos, posters, and ephemera, the book relates fashion to the rapidly changing social, economic, and aesthetic context of the times, arguing for the central role it played not just on Carnaby Street, but in 60's pop culture.
Book Description
The aesthetics and spirit of popular culture have been increasingly relevant to British graphic designers over the past several decades. Communicate offers a fascinating selection of this innovative work, examining closely the influence of youth culture, pop music, and new wave aesthetics on graphic design during the 1960s and ever since.
Illustrated in full color, Communicate features 350 images that range from classic designs of the sixties to the work of today’s emerging design teams, including record album covers for groups including The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Roxy Music; political protest posters; psychedelic concert posters; typeface projects and signage; and designs for books, magazines, and film.
Focusing on work from small, independent studios where creativity, rather than the bottom line, is paramount, the book includes projects by some 60 outstanding designers including Derek Birdsall, Richard Hollis, Neville Brody, Why Not Associates, and Scott King. Contributors to the volume trace how and why British graphic design has developed as it has, and interviews with ten key designers—Julian House, Ian Anderson, and Margaret Calvert among them—provide unique insider views of the design world.

Customer Reviews:
helpful book.......2007-05-24
This book has great pictures. It is not as comprehensive as I would have liked, but is still a very helpful guide to 60's fashion.
A good book relative to other options, but lacking any color and vibrancy of the time.......2007-02-12
Great book for those interested in sities fashion. No interpretive text or historical context-- this book is purely an assemblage of some of Sear's catalog most enduring and representative patterns of sixties attire. Ripped straight from the catalogue pages, this book is just filled from cover to cover of catalogue models and accessory displays. My main criticism is that I would have liked to see a book representing not only Sear's catalogue, but other popular stores of the day. In addition, the book could have been longer and more colorful. While I like the idea of black and white photos on the semi-gloss pages, most of the photos are more fuzzy and gray than crisp black and white. Only two pages are actually in color... which is a disappointment and not what you'd want from this time period. Half of fashion interest in the sixties is the bold use of color and pattern never seen before the period.
Inspirational and exciting!.......2006-11-10
This wonderful book provides a nostagic trip back to the 1960's, but more than just invoking fond memories, provides a glimpse of that changing decade through fashion. The early 60's ushered in mink stoles for $500.00, lady-like gowns and proper high heels. Towards the end of the '60's fashion takes on a distinct change, reflecting that turbulent time in the U.S. Gone are the wasp-waist dresses, and in come the "hippie" styles of striped bell-bottom pants for both sexes, mini-dresses and go-go boots modeled by Twiggy look-alikes. And the prices! A gorgeous pair of colorful leather flats were about $6.00, leather boots sold for $14.00. Of course, some of the styles are positively heinous according to current standards, but many have stood the test of time and would not seem out of place today. I love to scour old styles when I design my own clothes, and if you are a fashion designer or just love clothes, this is a wonderful reference guide.
fun look at the 60's.......2006-07-19
purchased to use as a resource for developing a course on 20th century visual (consumer) culture.
a fun quick overview of everyday American fashion in the 1960's. would love it more if it had more color photos, and a larger assortment of men's clothing options (it definitely focuses on women's clothing) , but it's a great quick reference.
Excellent resource.......2005-09-21
This is a wonderful resource for costume designers. It has a great overview of sixties fashion.

Book Description
Brilliant colors, eye-popping designs, luxurious fabrics--all these and more characterize the unforgettable fashion trends of the late 1960s and early 1970s. This was a turbulent, exciting era in our history, and clothing styles clearly reflected the fast-moving, youth-oriented culture we remember now with a sense of awe. Sophisticated or casual, clothing became an expression of personal feelings, ideas, and attitudes. Consumers hungered for bold new looks, and designers--led by Emilio Pucci of Italy--were only too happy to oblige. Using more than 400 color photos and illustrations, this book showcases the wonderful assortment of dresses, blouses, jackets, pants, shoes, and accessories worn by the most stylish of psychedelic era men and women. Pucci's fabulous works take center stage, joined by a kaleidoscopic array of fashions illustrating the influence of Op Art, "flower power," the Eastern world, native-inspired prints, and much more. Author Roseann Ettinger uses her expertise in the vintage clothing field to provide an absorbing look at the history behind these '60s and '70s fashions--looks that are enjoying renewed popularity today. Current values, a bibliography, and an index are all provided.

Marvelous comprehensive survey.......2000-12-21
The 1960s were definitive in terms of innovation and revolution. No where is this more apparent than in that decade's material culture artifacts. Leslie Jackson's book investigates the important highlights. From the sensual, modern curves of Scandinavian furniture to the re-invention of housewares at London's Habitat, design was not only flourishing, it was incredibly pervasive. Good design was everywhere; design was bold, playful, intelligent and fun. Scholarly, yet casual writing accompanied by plenty of full-color illustrations and a clean, stylish book design make this a must for both your coffee table and 20th century design library. An afterword focusses of the music of the Beatles and how it both reflected and prompted design innovation. While that's a bit of a stretch in my opinion, its still one of the more thought-provoking sections of the book. Beatles aside, this book proves to be incredibly relevant to today's consumers, as we are in the midst of a second revolution at the turn of the 21st century. IMacs, VW Beetles, and designer chairs at Target all mirror what happened 30 years ago.

Customer Reviews:
Fashions of the Sixties.......2005-04-16
This is an interesting review of the fashions of the sixties. The designs are beautifully drawn and the colors are vivid.
While I like the book, I don't think the costumes selected truly reflect the mood of the decade. There are too many "doll-like" outfits ( ruffles, flowers, etc), and not enough focus on the revolutionary changes in fashion during the period. The last plate representing the end of the decade does not give the sense of the ethnic influence on the late sixties which followed on to the seventies.
The dolls themselves are gorgeous, with one looking like an East Coast sophisticate while the other looks like a Californian beach baby.

Book Description
In that exciting decade, Britain and France exchanged ideas but devised their own powerful and different responses to the aspirations of sixties' youth - in painting, photography, graphic art, film, posters, fashion, music, architecture and interior design, television, revolution and protest. The striking visual momentos of these years of unprecedented prosperity and consumerism have become almost mythical - from images of the Beatles, the Who and Johnny Halliday, to Pop and Op Art, students' revolts and pleas to make peace and love, mini-skirts and fshion magazines, happenings, swinging London and Carnaby Street, to psychedelic fantasies, material abundance, outrage and scandal.
British Pop music flooded across the world, Quant invented the mini-skirt which was popularised in France by Courreges and Ungaro, CND posters, drawings from Steadman and, in France, comic strips perpetrated protest and satire. The New Wave films of Godard and Truffaut were admired in Britain, and television became central in the family life of both nations. The collection of pictures here shows the work of the most famous artists and designers - Peter Blake, Richard Hamilton, Allen Jones, Pauline Boty and Eduardo Paolozzi as well as Rancillac, Erro, Cueco and Martial Raysse - and of such photographers as Robert Whitaker, Lewis Morley, David Bailey and Sarah Moon.
At the end of the twentieth century, this book examines the effects of the revolution in behaviour and politics brought about in the sixties, as well as generating astonishment, gaiety, the pleasure of discovery and the warmth of memory.
This book accompanied the exhibition 'Les Sixties' at the Brighton Museum and Art Gallery.
