5 out of 5 stars A Flunky Shepherd Looks at Sheep Through God's Eyes.......2007-10-10

I purchased this book for its spiritual content, but this purchase coincided with our aquisition of three sheep on our small farm. The author takes the reader through intricate descriptions of what each verse of Psalms 23 means to the responsible, loving, busy, toiling Mediterranean shepherd. The deep spiritual insight is an amazing blessing. This book surprisingly served as a manual for sheep-keeping and by the end of the book we sold our sheep. What a blessing to realize that all we, like sheep, are difficult and complex and that God doesn't sell us to the first sheep trader that comes along. An excellent read giving insight into God's limitless dedication to us!

5 out of 5 stars A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23.......2007-10-10

Uplifting comparison of a shepherd and the care he gives his sheep to Jesus as the Good Shepherd and all that He provides to His followers.

5 out of 5 stars a shepherd looks a psalm 23.......2007-10-03

This is such a beautiful book. It gave me a whole new outlook about my relationship with Jesus, my shepherd. We even used this book for a series of teachings at our morning ladies meetings at church. I did not know all the detailed things that a shepherd did for his sheep. And they shall know my voice. Gives me goose bumps !!!!! Thankyou.Lois I. Cazinha

5 out of 5 stars Comforting Read.......2007-08-24

This is a wonderful book of comfort..and excellent for gift giving. Psalm 23 will never be the same after reading this wonderful book by Phillip Keller. His books are touching, real, and applicable.

5 out of 5 stars Building the manager from the inside out.......2007-07-16

This book is a great short read with a long term affect. The information you can learn from this book can build you from the inside out. While looking at the basic understanding from the view of a shepherd (manager/supervisor/leader)you can also see what you desire as a sheep (follower/employee). Take this book and look beyond the expectations of straight out forwrard managment techniques. No it will not give you the ideal bulleted words you want. You actually have to use your thoughts and imigaination, out of the box thinking. Then God through his words of the Psalmist will allow you to explore the source, God, as you become the resource. This book will do nothing for you if you DO NOT act on it. "Action words without action are no action at all."

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

Lewis writes here about the difficulties he has met or the joys he has gained in reading the Psalms. He points out that the Psalms are poems, intended to be sung, not doctrinal treatises or sermons. Proceeding with his characteristic grace, he guides readers through both the form and the meaning of these beloved passages in the Bible.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Great Information but not easy to read.......2007-08-27

C.S. Lewis points out some very interesting facts and shows you his perspective on the psalms. He uses several different aspects to review such as their view of death, afterlife, suffering, etc. He points out that the Psalms are songs and should be interprated with that fact in mind. That alone adds a new perspective to the Psalms. He also makes it clear that the Psalms are not neccessarily to be viewed from a Christian perspective because the writers were not Christians.

The only downside I can see in the book is C.S. Lewis' writing style. He supposes his readers know certain historical figures and are versed in numerous literary writings on certain subjects. If you are not a person who reads these types of things all the time it may come difficult for you. Either way you will still get something out of it. Many time Christians, such as myself, try to make something in the Bible what we want it to be, and I believe we have done that to the Psalms over and over again. Have a read!

4 out of 5 stars A Master of Literature Reviews the Psalms.......2007-02-26

It had been awhile since I read any CS Lewis when I picked up this book. It is much different than others I have read, but it was quite enjoyable. Instead of analyzing specific Psalms in detail, Lewis takes a more thematic approach. This method allows him to connect the dots between specific Psalms, and other passage of Scripture as well.

Overall, Lewis does a tremendous job of making his points, and highlighting the fact that the Psalms are poems, and not doctrinal statements. Although I do not agree with all of his conclusions, Lewis really does make you think. I appreciate the fact that I felt like I had completed a successful journey through the book of Psalms after reading the book. It really opened my eyes to some new insights - which is refreshing.

If you like CS Lewis, or are interested in learning more about the Book of Psalms, then I highly recommend this book. You will see something there that you did not see before.

4 out of 5 stars Personal, powerful, intimate.......2007-02-19

This is not a commentary on the Psalms - this is Lewis wrestling personally with the Psalms, around issues near and dear to his heart. But what better way to encounter the Psalms? They are written as a songbook, as lyrical poems from the heart of one worshiper to another. They aren't primarily doctrinal theses, they are artworks of exceeding skill and ability. Lewis is intellectually and devotionally equipped to engage with the Psalms at a deep level. I love reading his meditations on the Psalms.

5 out of 5 stars Lewis gets to the heart of the matter.......2006-04-27

Thankfully this is not one of those books on the Psalms that will tell you that this or that Psalm is a lament or a cultic liturgy or an ode to someone bent on the succession of the Davidic monarchy. Lewis gets to the heart of matters, raising and answering questions that concern intelligent believers. For instance, what are we as Christians to make of imprecatory Psalms? Lewis considers not only those who write such Psalms, but also what has happened to them in life to get them to that point. Why so much talk about God's judgment? Lewis corrects the erroneous impression that judgment in the Psalms refers to God's punishment of evil doers. The primary sense is of a plaintiff pleading with God (the Judge) to pass judgment in their favor. What of the apparent self-righteousness of some of the Psalmists? Lewis says that all the talk about the Law is no Pharisaism but a the delight in Order: "The Order of the Divine mind, embodied in the Divine Law is beautiful." (53) Lewis' favorite is Psalm 19 and his writes about it in such a way as to make it come alive. The searching cleansing sun, is the searching cleansing Law. He identifies the key phrase as "there is nothing hid from the heat thereof" (19.6) That, for Lewis, describes the Law: :"luminous, severe, disinfectant, exultant (57). Finally, I must mention the surprising chapter on the subject of praise. Lewis writes that praise is not a matter of telling God how wonderful he is, but a way of expressing gratitude for what we care deeply about. Praise is something all human beings naturally do: we praise things and people that we value. When we praise them we complete our enjoyment of them through our words: "praise not merely expresses but completes the enjoyment" (81). Despite the fact that Lewis was not a theologian, he had a keener grasp of comparative religion, and Hebraic concepts than many biblical scholars. This is a book written by someone who has spent years praying the Psalms, not by someone who treats the Psalms as if they were an insect under a microscope.

5 out of 5 stars Meditative.......2005-10-28

Bonhoeffer really drives you into appreciating the spiritual depth of the Psalms and their Christ centred significance. I found the book difficult to put down. A great spiritual read.

If you are looking for authoritative guidance in interpreting Scripture, understanding the early church, and learning how to apply the Word of God to your spiritual life -- The Orthodox Study Bible will be a treasured resource for you.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not the best option.......2007-10-08

There are several problems with this edition of the New Testament. First, it uses the NKJV text, which is not a translation that the Orthodox Church has recognized as being without fault. I understand the use of it from one perspective, since many of the people who convert to our faith are from a Protestant background, and the King James is familiar.

More troubling, though, is the astounding lack of patristic commentary. We have 18 centuries of Church Fathers (and Mothers, too!) to draw on for proper understanding of the Scriptures, and there is hardly a lone footnote to be found that references St. John Chrysostom, Cyril of Alexandria or (in the case of Revelation) St. Andrew of Caesarea. Why?

This lack of patristic emphasis is especially evident in the page-long commentaries on the sacraments. These commentaries seem to be less geared toward proper Orthodox understanding and more aimed at defending our doctrine against evangelical claims. Again, hardly surprising, since many of the editors of this edition are from the evangelical background.

The icons are nice, though, as are the liturgical lectionary notes. The inclusion of the morning and evening prayers in the back is always nice. For a really good edition of the Orthodox New Testament, though, skip this one. Get the two-volume edition put out by Dormition Skete at Holy Apostles Convent. The translation is good, and the commentary is 100% patristic.

2 out of 5 stars Beautiful presentation, woefully inadequate commentary.......2007-07-18

This Bible fills a great need, and it is beautifully presented. However, as other reviewers have noted, the commentary and introductions to the books take very little account of the last 200 years of biblical scholarship, even critical Orthodox scholarship. Some introductions are painfully simplistic. I'm sure this appeals to ex-fundamentalist, Protestant converts to Orthodoxy who long for a Church in which there is not a hint of ambiguity, but it does a service to no-one to keep readers in the dark about some of the hypotheses of recent Biblical scholarship, even if one has good reasons for disagreeing with them. A case in point: Telling readers that St. Polycarp attributed a certain pseudo-Pauline epistle to Paul may be interesting Orthodox history, but the editors of this Bible should at least tell readers why some scholars have reason to doubt the Pauline authorship of some epistles. Perhaps this study Bible was intended to be more devotional than scholarly...That's okay, but be sure to also have something like the Harper Collins Study Bible on hand. I'm still waiting for the day when we will see an Orthodox Bible that combines the best of scholarly and devotional approaches.

4 out of 5 stars Would the REAL King James please stand up!.......2007-02-22

This Bible is literally a God send to all Christians and especially us Liturgical ones (Roman, Anglican as well as Orthodox) as it looks at the New Testament and Psalms from an Apostolic point of view along with the Godly traditions passed down by the Church through the centuries. The study aids and information about the Orthodox Church are very useful as well. The gallery of Icons scattered throughout the text are lovely. Alas, why can't it be in the time honoured King James Version instead of the somewhat sterile NKJV? I hope that a complete Old Testament along with the New Testament study Bible is forthcoming.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for devotional reading.......2007-02-04

There are several ways to read the Bible - the two most common are devotional and academic. A devotional reader reads the Bible as if it were a love-letter from their Beloved - reading not critically, not looking for flaws or loopholes, or evidence, but rather looking for what the Beloved wishes to communicate. The academic reader reads as if reading a scientific textbook, searching for flaws, evidence, arguments, and proof.

There is a place for both types of reading. Devotional for the Spiritual life, and Academic for the person who needs more evidence to come to Faith regarding a particular teaching, or who writes for those in such a position, or a person who simply has an academic interest in Religious matters. Many times a person might alternate between the two types of reading based on their needs at a given time.

If you are a person who wishes to read the Bible devotionally, with an understanding of the Orthodox Church's teachings on the passages, this is a perfect choice. If you are new to Orthodoxy, or cradle Orthodox, or if you know nothing of Orthodoxy, and want to understand the Church's teachings about every New Testament passage, this is an ideal place to start.

If you are an academic reader, I would still strongly encourage this edition, only with the caveat that you shouldn't expect it to what it is not. It gives a wonderful first level overview of any given passage, and a good place to start for further reasearch. It is not an apologetic work, but neither was it intended to be.

I have read this edition from cover-to-cover - every word, every footnote, every article (except perhaps the index and the copyright page ; ) - I cannot recommend it more highly. Inside the cover there is an impressive list of endorsements by many well-known Orthodox Bishops.

4 out of 5 stars A bit odd............2007-02-01

Although it is admirable that such copious notes are used to explain the Orthodox Church and it's belief system, I find it astonishing - albeit somewhat amusing - that the translation used is one that is so readily identifiable as protestant and highly favored and regarded by evangelicals or fundamentalists. But then, Thomas Nelson isn't exactly an Orthodox publishing house....

Book Description

A Formatio book. As a society, we are no less obsessed with the immediate than when Eugene Peterson first wrote this Christian classic. If anything, email and the Internet may have intensified our quest for the quick fix. But Peterson's time-tested prescription for discipleship remains the same--a long obedience in the same direction.Tucked away in the Hebrew Psalter, Peterson discovered "an old dog-eared songbook," the Songs of Ascents that were sung by pilgrims on their way up to worship in Jerusalem. In these songs (Psalms 120-134) Peterson finds encouragement for modern pilgrims as we learn to grow in worship, service, joy, work, happiness, humility, community and blessing. This 20th anniversary edition of A Long Obedience in the Same Direction features these Psalms in Peterson's widely acclaimed paraphrase, The Message. He also includes an epilogue in which he reflects on the themes of this book and his ministry during the twenty years since its original publication.

5 out of 5 stars Not if you want a quick fix for spirituality.......2007-04-02

Peterson's work here is spectacular. In a society that wants everything fast--include the mature fruit of Christianity spent years in the making and gestating--one cannot biggy size this or get it while speeding through the window. There isn't even a toy surprise inside! However, these serious, thought provoking, careful reflections into the shape and heart of discipleship bear patient reading, perhaps only a page or two at a time, and then more patient reading, and thinking on--and then more. If you want a quick fix--this book ain't it (I'm by nurture a Southerner, so ain't is quite appropriate), but if you want something to sit for a spell with and chew on a while--read this book slowly and learn...you'll be the better for it.

Peterson is not just a pretty good paraphraser of Scripture in his "The Message", he is a powerful interpreter of Scripture, too. "A Long Obedience . . ." (a phrase from Nietsche, of all people) is a real meat and potatoes feast for hungry souls desiring to feed on the Word. Summarizing a single theme within the general context of discipleship in each of the Psalms of Ascent, Peterson provides an uplifting devotional for those ready and able to be inspired by it. His writing in this book is more Lewis than Lucado, so readers must be prepared (by spiritual training and maturity, not just emotionally) to dive in to the depths to derive the full delight from Peterson's expositions. I spent most of summer, '06 in "A Long Obedience . . ." and highly recommend it to others.

This book has the same kind of C.S. Lewis wisdom that makes you want to read, underline, and re-read the book. It is insightful, encouraging and full of new perspectives on life that are applicable to the world we live in today. His words challenged me as a disciple of Christ.

5 out of 5 stars Discipleship.......2007-02-20

This update to a classic writing on spritual formation is much needed in Christian church life. The companion workbook is also an excellent guide for group study.

3 out of 5 stars Correction.......2004-03-30

I haven't read the book, I just wanted to correct something. tvtv3 said that The Message is "not an actual translation" of the Bible. In truth it is not. A translation is a paraphrase taken from another English version of the text (like the NLT). When a text is translated from the original Hebrew and Greek it's called a version (NKJV, NIV). That's what The Message is, a version.

Book Description

Rabbi Harold Kushner believes that the Twenty-third Psalm--perhaps the most memorable and cherished chapter of the Bible--offers spiritual riches that can change a person’s life. He has found that these simple, beautiful verses, full of honesty and optimism, have an almost magical power to comfort and calm. The psalm does not pretend that life is ever easy, but it offers a masterful guide to living in the world with faith and courage. Drawing on over forty years of his own thinking, on other biblical scholars, and on history, Kushner gracefully demonstrates how this sustaining work can help us cope with every aspect of life, from mundane jealousies to the death of a loved one to unimaginable tragedies of global proportions.

5 out of 5 stars Find Uplifting, Modern Meaning In An Old Favorite.......2007-08-14

This book takes a very difficult topic and gives it an encouraging side. Even though life can be tough, even wrenching, sometimes (Kushner's analysis applies well beyond the topic of death that we associate with this psalm), finding the comfort in Psalm 23 means not being alone in your plight. The author puts a much greater understanding around some very abstract language that allowed me to get much more than just reading the words and taking them at face value only. This is a must-read for many of us.

5 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS AMAZING!.......2007-05-14

This book gives so much depth and daily application to a prayer that almost everyone has heard at one time or another. I used to think this was the prayer for funerals and death but it is very much for the living every day. Rabbi Kushner is a phenomenal author that I find incredibly easy to read and so meaningful.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book by Rabbi Kushner.......2007-01-09

This is a beautiful and thought-provoking work by Harold Kushner. I've recommended it to many people and have given it as gifts to others. Well worth the money and something you will probably want to read more than once. The book on cd is great also.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent way to understand this psalm.......2006-01-21

If you believe in God from a Christian or Jew perspective, you can be enlightened and delighted with this thorough explanation of the psalm and benefit from taking the posture the psalmist(s) had when writing it. I have listened to this psalm throughout my whole life and never had the opportunity to fully see all that may be found in its deep meaning. It is amazing all can be expanded from these simple phrases.
I usually love Harold Kushner's way of explaining spiritual material (Must read: "When Bad Things Happen to Good People", "Living a Life that Matters" and "How Good do We Have to Be") because, although his main point of view is a religious one, even if you don't believe or don't even want to think about these points of view, you can still get the full message, get a wise vision of life, adversity, the laws of nature, reality, joy, ethics, reaching for self fulfillment and integrity, etc. But, I must repeat, in order to enjoy and benefit from this book, I think you must believe in God because this one is much more religious than the other books I mentioned from the same author. If you want to understand what may be in the depths of the psalm and don't really care about feeling peace or living according to it, go ahead and read the book because it gives an interesting way of understanding what religion may provide or wants to give.

An amazing way to read and understant the Psalms.

5 out of 5 stars Praying with Christ.......2003-11-18

In this beautiful little book, Bonhoeffer guides the Christian to the Scriptures for lessons in how to pray. He affirms that the Lord's Prayer is the primary prayer of the Christian, which he asserts contains every prayer that a Christian ought to pray. Bonhoeffer also makes a startling but wise claim that jolts us out of the narrowness of our focus in prayer: "The richness of the Word of God ought to determine our prayer, not the poverty of our heart." Thus we find the book of Psalms to be a rich treasury of prayers that are part of God's inspired word, and therefore a true place to learn how God would have us pray.

The book proceeds to give some general background on the history and use of the Psalms as the prayer book of the Bible. In the main part of the book he presents one possible system of categorizing the Psalms according to their petitions, and also points out that they can be organized according to the petitions of the Lord's Prayer. But the most valuable part of the book, in my opinion, is how he shows us how the Psalms are to be prayed in Christ, of whom the Psalms also testify (Luke 24:44). As Bonhoeffer says, "It is the incarnate Son of God, who has borne every human weakness in his own flesh, who here pours out the heart of all humanity before God, and who stands in our place and prays for us."

This is a fine book for the devotional/prayer life of the Christian.

4 out of 5 stars How to pray the psalms with confidence and love.......2000-01-04

Dietrich Bonhoeffer, hung by the Nazis for his principled resistance to perversion of Christian life, leads us through the themes and value of psalms. These song-prayers, brought forth from thousands of years of human longing for connection with God, are just as powerful in their meaning of human life, today. Use this tiny volume as a study guide to psalm themes for better prayer life.

      Book Description

Because it is sometimes challenging for today's Christians to move from the frenetic pace and noisy world of today's society and enter into the silence and stillness of contemplative praying, Jeanie Miley provides a way of using the psalms as a doorway into prayer. Reading the psalm indicated for each day's meditation and then reflecting on the day's reading, persons are invited to "pray the psalms" in a way that connects the ancient prayers with their own present-day experience. By moving back and forth between the psalm and your own experience in prayer, "Ancient Psalms for Contemporary Pilgrims" provides a process through which the Living God can lead you to a deeper reflection on your own life.
