Book Description

Natural stone is one of the most expressive materials on earth. No two slabs are alike, yet every piece is unrivaled for warmth, strength, and resilience. Today, natural stone is the hottest trend for interiors-whether as a stylish tiled floor, a dramatic fireplace surround, or a kitchen counter that will last a lifetime.

Hundreds of photographs provide inspiration for the myriad ways to use this oldest of building materials, be it granite, marble, limestone, slate, or travertine. And the wide variety of designs featured in Stone prove that it is easy to use it anywhere in your own home, even on a tight budget.

Stone is a comprehensive and easy-to-use guide to bringing natural stone into the home. Color charts reveal the wide range of tones available. A buyer's guide matches rooms and lifestyles with the right stone. Other tips help with budgeting and finding the right installer-or doing it yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Covers every aspect of stone .......2006-11-17

This is a great book. it will give you detailed information about the stone types that you can use in your house and great photos. i'm in the stone flooring business and this book helps my customers to visualize the final look of the stone they choose from my showroom floor. it also has a section with patterns so you dont have to figure out how to lay stones in different sizes to make a pattern.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic, Helpful, Informative Book about using Stone in your Home.......2006-06-09

We are considering having our kitchen remodeled and definitely want to replace the current Corian with some type of stone. This book covers stone used in kitchens and baths. Besides the gorgeous photographs, the book includes lots of helpful tips in helping you chose the right stone for your project. Each photo is described with caption of what the stone is, including the pattern or color. The chapters include the stone kitchen, bath, floor and architectural stone. What is really nice is that it addresses various possible focal points, such as the stone vent hood in the kitchen or a beautiful stone fireplace.

The book encompasses multiple styles, designs and patterns for counters, floors, backsplashes and walls. For the photography and ideas alone, this book is worth the price but it has so much more. It includes tips and pointers for using stone in various places. For example, on page 66, there is a side bar that has Ideas for the Shower. It includes tips like "When chosing a polished granite for the shower walls, keep in mind that water spots are magnified on a polished surface."

This books covers all kinds of natural stone: limestone, granite, travertine, marble, slate. I wholeheartedly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars I love this book!!.......2005-10-13

This book describes the nature of various types of stones and the recommended usage inside and outside the home. I've used this book as a guide to show my local stone dealer what type of stones I'm looking for. And also used it to illustrate the concept of my dream home to my Interior Designer, she understood immediately without us having to go through many rounds of interview to get it right. As a result, my dream home is now almost complete with stones from all over the world, marbles from Spain, Italy, Iran.... granite from Norway and Indonesia... coral stones, tumblestones, slates, and many more.... Wonderful pictures and illustrations, I'd recommend this book to anyone! Suitable for modern Asian homes too!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Stone Resource & Nice Pictures.......2005-08-29

I work for a natural stone retailer in Texas, and this book gives me ideas for customers. Many of my store's clients want to take this book home or buy it. I don't let them take it home of course; I suggest that they buy one on Amazon.com.
In my opinion, I think it makes a good coffee table book as well, since when people are waiting in my showroom, I see them browsing through this book. I wish there were more books like this one.

5 out of 5 stars honed or tumbled?.......2005-05-17

This book is not only a great resource guide for those new to designing with stones, but also fun to look at and inspirational. I found ideas for the bathroom, kitchen, and even for a staircase.

5 out of 5 stars Organize and Plan for Your Kitchen or Bath Project.......1999-12-19

The major part of any project is being organized. And what better way to organize a kitchen or bath redesign than to practice effective time management skills? That's right: delegate to a professional who deals with this sort of undertaking every single day: a designer. Utilizing the skills of a talented kitchen or bath designer will decrease stress, improve productivity, and create more time for you to enjoy the task at hand: redesigning or remodeling the kitchen or bathroom in your home.

I'm a big fan of being prepared - that's what makes life fun. And the experts at Home Depot have compiled their favorite tips and techniques into one easy-to-use book. The book is well organized and very easy to use, which encourages us to keep it handy for quick references.

Whether you're creating a color scheme, choosing light design, wrestling with investment return issues, or wanting detailed information about the order of work done by contractors, this book is a goldmine of details for your project. Of course, my favorite section offers organizing solutions for the kitchen, including cabinet accessories and room layout, but it is sure is refreshing to see this as an issue before construction rather than an afterthought. Great planning!

This makes a great coffee-table book, since you'll refer to it time and time again. But if your coffee table is very far from your kitchen, then perhaps you'll add it to your cookbooks instead. Happy designing!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great source of inspiration!.......2007-08-02

My husband and I are turning our uninspired 1968 tract home into a 2 story Mediterranean. We bought the Kitchen & Bath collection to help us in the design phase. These are not "do it yourself" books. Instead, they help you focus on how to design a kitchen or bath that will work for you. They discuss types of flooring, counters, cabinets, lighting, and how to design a space that "works" for your lifestyle and that "flows" well within your floorplan. We have lots of other books with lots of pretty pictures of designer kitchens & baths but these books were the most useful when we finally sat down with our architect. Without them, we would have never thought to include a lot of the little touches that helped to maximize our kitchen space for the way we cook (canning, cake decorating, candy making, entertaining) or how to make the best use of our bathroom space (extra storage and accessibility) since I have a disability. You might think that your architect would help you with all these things but don't count on it. The clearer your ideas are and the better you are able to articulate those ideas to your architect, the better your design is going to fit your lifestyle and the happier you will be when the project is finished.

Book Description

A cabin isn't just a home in the woods, it's an architecturally and aesthetically unique structure that deserves special attention with regard to decoration and organization of rooms and living space. Cabin Kitchens and Baths is the first book to look specifically at the challenges that can come with decorating or remodeling bathrooms and kitchens in log homes and cabins-small spaces, unusually shaped rooms, lighting issues, and more. Cabin Kitchens and Baths offers tips from professionals in the log home building industry on cabinetry, appliances, architectural details, color, and floor plans that will help make a dream kitchen or bathroom a reality. From floor to ceiling, these rooms are the most complex in a home, and are even more so in a cabin or old log home. Franklin and Esther Schmidt focus on the architectural elements, furnishings, appliances, design and decor, and include inspiring kitchen floor plans and expert sidebars as well as beautiful photography. This book is a must-have for anyone considering a remodel or redecorating project on a cabin or log home. Esther and Franklin Schmidt are a photography, styling, and writing team who have photographed and written about hundreds of log and timber frame cabins. They have traveled to nearly every state, producing articles and photo features for all the major log and timber frame magazines. Their work is featured in a variety of books on cabin living as well as such national magazines as Architectural Digest, Old House Interiors, Antiques & Fine Art, Country Home, and Country Living. As field editors for Victorian Homes, Washington, D.C. correspondents for Art & Antiques, and antiques columnists for Country Accents, they have focused their work on interior design as it relates to architecture and lifestyle.

5 out of 5 stars Dream Cabins.......2004-12-11

Everyone dreams of a getaway cabin - a place of rest and refuge. ~pg. 1

If you have your own log cabin dreams, the best ways to get ideas is to look through wonderful log cabin books written by photographers who have written about hundreds of log cabins. The authors of this gorgeous book live in a farmhouse deep in the rural Virginia countryside.

They are frequently on the road and spend time in New York City at their studio space. Franklin and Esther Schmidt have captured some of the most beautiful kitchens and baths I've ever seen. They are romantic, inspiring and very cozy.

This book is filled with ideas for remodeling or new homes. This book explores architectural elements, furnishings, appliances, bathrooms, design and décor. Many of the cabins are surprisingly modern and quite interesting. The curtains and lighting stand out as highlights against the warm wood interiors.

After reading this book you may find yourself adding heart bundt pans, candles and new pots and pans to your wish list or dreaming about lace curtains. Many of the kitchens have a special shelf for cookbooks and all the kitchens look like dream kitchens. Pots and pans hang from the ceilings along with baskets and dried flowers.

There are many creative ideas in the pictures, like a wagon as a coffee table. Baskets are definitely a decorative element in the kitchens.

While most of this book is about kitchens, there is a section about creating soothing spaces filled with candles, fluffy towels and deep baths. Here are all the bathtubs we dream about, complete with big windows, plants and candles everywhere.

If you love claw-foot tubs, there are many examples in various settings. I had never seen a lavender colored tub so that was interesting. There are ideas for stenciling and one bath tub has a waterfall.

The resources will be very helpful for home builders and almost every source has a website for immediate access to ideas and inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a good one.......2004-05-20

I've been looking for a book like this for ages. There are lots of great looking design books, very few offer real help. I found this book to be excellently organized with in-depth information on every aspect of kitchen and bathroom design. The writing is intelligent, without being overly technical, and good-humored while also giving practical solutions to a variety of design and structural challenges.
The photography, which as another reviewer pointed out, could stand alone as being quite beautiful, is very specific in terms of what is depicted as referencing the subject matter in the respective chapters and sections.
Another reviewer pointed out that the photography is redundant to what appears in the log magazines on the newsstands. I think that is untrue. I'm an avid reader of log magazines, and have been for a good number of years, and do not see any repetition at all. These photographs are certainly new to my eyes and are of the highest quality.
I find it remarkable that with so many books on kitchens and myriad publications on cabins, this is the first time that the two subjects have been combined in one volume. And, what an effective volume it is.
On a personal point of view, as a lover of great interiors and with a nice little library of good design books, this one has great pipe dream potential and one of these days I might even use some of the ideas in re-doing my own kitchen and bathroom.

3 out of 5 stars Cabin Kitchens & Baths.......2004-05-13

If you subscribe to, or even buy some of the log cabin magazines from the news stand, this book is a repeat for the most part. Most of the pictures have already been published over and over again. If you haven't gotten any log or timber home magazines lately this is a good book. Although, I liked Inside Log Homes: The Art and Spirit of Home Decor much better.

Book Review
CABIN KITCHENS AND BATHS by Franklin and Esther Schmidt (Gibbs Smith, Salt Lake City, 2004)

This book delivers far more than it promises. First and foremost, it is a chatty but practical and lavishly - illustrated guide designed to lead a cabin or homeowner through the process of designing what most of us would consider the two most difficult and important rooms in our residence. The Schmidts do this by a readable text, made more useful by including opinions from numerous professionals involved in cabin design from soup to nuts. The book...which obviously could be used to design kitchens and baths in any kind of residence...includes helpful check lists to prepare one thoroughly from design to installation.

CABIN KITCHENS AND BATHS is also a wonderful "coffee table" book for post and beam and log residences. My library holdings include numerous volumes of books whose last name is "STYLE"......"Greek Style"," Japanese Style", etc, and I often reread them for the simple pleasure of it. The lavish color photography makes this book infinitely more attractive.

Finally, the Schmidts give us a tantalizing look into myriad design choices for decorating kitchens, baths and the rest of the cabin. Collections, individual pieces, the old and the new populate most of the photographs and add yet another dimension to this book. After the kitchen and bath are finally finished, one can easily find pleasure for many years in the other things that this book so richly illustrates.

Book Description

``Ms. Peterson and the NKBA dispel the myth that universal design is institutional in appearance.''--Deane Evans, VP, Research, AIA. A revised, combined edition of two highly praised titles from the National Kitchen and Bathroom Association, this fully illustrated work brings building professionals everything they need to apply universal design to kitchens and bathrooms. Supplanting the NKBA's separate bathroom and kitchen paperback titles, this edited, updated, and more affordable version meets the growing demand for practical information on design that suits all users throughout their lifecycle. Spurred by an affluent, aging baby boomer population--a major segment of the market for the 15 million kitchen and bath projects undertaken annually--this demand for design that suits people of all ages and disabilities is mushrooming. Providing all the tools architects, builders, and interior designers need to meet this demand, this book features: valuable design checklists and client surveys; product evaluation guides; clear, measured graphic design standards; thoroughly tested design guidelines; case studies with photographs of installations and product specifications; more than 800 illustrations; comprehensive listings of codes, laws, regulations, product sources, and other resources. For design and building professionals, or even for do-it-yourselfers, this is the ultimate guide to creating bathrooms and kitchens that are universally accessible--and beautiful.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Information, yes. Inspiration, no........2000-09-06

This book is a good resource for builders, architects or people building a house.

Universal Design DOES NOT EQUAL wheelchair accessibility and this book makes that very clear. Universal Design (hereafter UD)means taking into account the best way to design for everyone, not just the small percentage of average height, "able-bodied", 20-50 year old "perfect" people in the world. This book also points out that fewer people want to move in with their kids or into a "home" when they get older. So why build houses that will prevent this from happening?

UD is about making things useable for people of almost all physical conditions; sight-impared, mobility-impared, mentally-impared, size-impared (short or tall), and even "average, healthy" people.

This book makes it abundantly clear that UD is not difficult to do on new construction. UD does not have to add hundreds of square feet to your plan.

The book does not, however, have a lot of photos or ideas on how to make UD attractive. The small number of photos in this book are small, black and white, and poor quality. They do make their point, even though they are not pretty to look at.

The book is FULL (almost cover to cover) of diagrams and line drawings which show the possibilities AND detailed requirements of universal design. Many of the details are wheelchair-oriented, but this is because wheelchair access is often the lowest common denominator.

If you need to be concerned about UD or if you feel that it is a smart thing to do (I firmly believe it is a smart thing to do), then buy this book. There are no pretty, inspiring photos to show you how to do it beautifully, but there are tons of details to make sure you don't do it wrong. EVERY ARCHITECT AND BUILDER OUGHT TO HAVE A COPY OF THIS BOOK.

(P.S. Just think of the "fun" you would have in your current house if you had to use a walker, wheelchair, or only one hand. What about even a broken leg? You WILL more than likely get old sometime. You could even be injured and become disabled (even if only temporarily). Do you want your house to be a barrier in that event? UD really should be something everyone thinks about, seriously!)

4 out of 5 stars Lifetime Useable Kitchens and Baths.......2000-03-28

Here is a great book that takes into account how our needs and use of the kitchen and bathroom change through life. It goes beyond the idea of providing access for the handicapped and shows how these rooms need to take into account how big or tall or short we are and considers how our ability to do things changes with age. "Universal Kitchen and Bathroom Planning: Design That Adapts To People" is a needed source book whether you are a design professional or a homeowner interested in remodelling.

Book Description

Romance is in and Victorian design and architecture are as popular now as they were when Victorian was the contemporary style more than a hundred years ago. Often, people who buy a Victorian home have expertise in antiques of the era and can furnish a period living room or bedroom, but they are stymied when it comes to the kitchen and the bathroom. Victorian Kitchens and Baths solves this common dilemma by looking at the individual design, decor and architectural elements that make a room Victorian, offering a myriad of purist as well as interpretive ideas that can be used and adapted to fit many homes and tastes.

This is a wonderful book for anyone dreaming of restoring a Victorian home. Lots of pictures but also well researched and interesting text. Rooms to Remember captures an original approach to decoration. The look is inspired but never enslaved by the past, and relies not on money but on imagination and freedom-the freedom to use illusion and visual excitement, ignore fashion, mix styles and express personal vision. Barbara and Rene' Stoeltie draw on elegant, original interiors as varied as an American country retreat, a French fisherman's dwelling, and an eighteenth century Dutch manor house. Though wide ranging in style, all are united by a spirit of invention; and people who have created these eclectic and timeless rooms delight in sharing their expertise.

5 out of 5 stars Authentic shabby chic interiors.......2005-04-05

The interiors featured in Rooms to Remember are truly inspirational for those of us who value authenticity. They include the interiors of many historic homes in Europe and America that have been carefully designed to create atmosphere and charm. Photographs are of whole rooms as well as smaller vignettes. The always wonderful work of American interior designer John Saladino and the extraordinary and unique work of French interior designer Frederic Mechiche, my favorites, are well represented. The colors in the textiles and paint, and combinations of architectural and design elements are given special attention. The photography evokes the 18th century, and transports you back in time. The text is enjoyably readable and extremely informative. I keep the book on hand...it is that lovely. I highly recommend this book to any interior designer and for those who love really traditional and historical interiors.

      Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Could have been a free pamphlet.......2006-04-14

I bought this book at Home Depot and returned it after a few hours upon finishing it. I could have got the same information from a free pamphlet. They ought to be ashamed. However, there were some nice pictures and I did learn a little bit, but it was just a super easy primer for the real thing. I didn't buy another book before tiling 900sf in my house. I wish I had bought a better book, as I learned all kinds of tricks "the hard way." Hint: Swimming after tiling all day can return your back to normal when it doesn't seem like anything else will help. I am now going to buy John Bridge's book before my next tiling job.

      4 out of 5 stars good.......2005-10-22

This is a good book for people who want to start tiling or for people who have stated but would like to get more ideas, help or tricks.

      2 out of 5 stars Ooooo... Pictures..........2005-03-17

This book is more or less useless on it's own. It tries to make tiling look really simple and straightforward. Tiling is actually not rocket science at all, but you really do need to spend time up front deciding what you are going to do. It isn't a weekend project. Get a real book written by someone who actually lays tile professionally and not just by people who sell the latest half-baked do it yourself supplies. I recommend "Tile Your Word" or "Setting Tile". Both top notch books. In fact, get both - given how expensive tile is it'll be worth the money.

This book does have some nice pictures of some steps though. That's about all I can recommend it for.
