3 out of 5 stars This book was exactly what I expected........2002-12-27

Obviously, since this book is printed by Benjamin Moore Paints, there will be a certain amount of self-advertising following it's advice on choosing the proper paints and equipment (like the recipies on the back of soup cans).
However, this book was a good primer (pardon the pun) for anyone who is compentant enough to paint the insides of a house, and is just starting to tackle the outside of their home.
I found it chock full of useful advice, but lacking in enough procedural details to be called a "step-by-step" guide.
It'll say things like "Strip and sand the exterior trim before priming" and I'll say things like "HOW?!?"

    1 out of 5 stars I'm still stuck.......2002-03-05

I have purchased several guides for painting houses in the "home improvements" category. They were fine for learning about painting a house, but I'm hiring painter, so I don't really need that information. What I need is help choosing the right color. Obviously I don't want to make a mistake. I already know that I want a yellow house. But none of the colors I have tested look right. They are all too bright or dark even though they look pale on the paint chips. When I saw this book, I noticed the phrase "choosing paint colors" right in the title, so I assumed it was the answer. But, I felt every bit as stuck at the paint store as I did before reading the book. My expectation was that I wouldn't have to start going through paint chips anymore, but the information in the book wasn't specific enough to be useful to me. The book did not meet my expectations.

1 out of 5 stars Where are the painted houses?.......2002-03-04

I thought this book would give me photographs of painted houses and their paint colors. Instead it gave detailed information on the paint process itself with scant few houses where the whole house shows. Its mostly pretty photos like the rooftop of a house with a weatherwane on it, or a window with a window box of flowers under it. Where are the painted houses? I can't figure out what color to paint my house using this book.

1 out of 5 stars More attractive than helpful.......2002-03-03

I bought the book because I needed help figuring out what color to paint my house, but it really didn't help me. The book looks good, but what I need is help choosing colors. I returned it.

4 out of 5 stars The Art of Exterior Painting.......2000-08-08

Painting a house or even thinking about it is no fun. I visited a Benjamin Moore Paint Store and browsed through the store's only copy of the book, The Art of Exterior Painting. The book is very well written with the basics of house painting described in detail and with color photos describing problems, solutions and ultimate results. The book impressed me so much I went home and ordered it via Amazon for my own reference as I plan to paint my house. An excellent PRIMER!

This is an excellent resource for beginners and experts alike! Great photos and step by step instructions.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautifully photographed step-by-step instructions.......2006-12-04

This book directs the reader through several projects, beginning with a very simple one to one that is quite complicated. Covers a wide range of techniques, and displays each step quite clearly with many good photographs. The book is particulary valuable for upholstering antique pieces with materials similar to what would have been original to the piece. There is not a piece of foam used in any of the projects. Some upholsterers find that the vegetable fiber is more difficult to smooth out than foam, particularly for the inexperienced student. But if you want to see traditional techniques beautifully illustrated, this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, with great photographs. .......2006-05-24

I have an old leather chesterfield couch that needs to be repaired in sections. I have no doubt that this is going to be a great help. The projects are all step by step with great color photographs. It also goes over all the tools needed. If my project turns out half as nice as the pictures I will be thrilled.

    Book Description

In Styling For Entertaining, Susie Coelho reveals how ordinary spaces can be easily transformed into settings for casual entertaining or extraordinary parties -- with minimum effort and maximum effect.

Susie Coelho is today's freshest force in lifestyle. As a bestselling author and television host, her accessible philosophy and inspiring personality have made her a trusted authority on styling advice.

In this hands-on guidebook, Susie styles four areas (living room, dining room, patio, and lawn) in three different ways. Using her signature styling philosophy, Susie reinvents each space for a casual entertaining get-together, a seasonal party, and a special, one-of-a-kind event. You'll see that when the emphasis is on styling (which uses things you already have) rather than decorating (which generally means a lot more time and money), almost every makeover can be done in as little as one day and may cost next to nothing!

Styling success is inevitable when you use Susie's formula. You'll see all eight steps in action: planning the occasion; envisioning the ideal setting; developing a makeover style; creating a style board and using a "style file" (Susie's great organizing tool); painting your color palette; gathering your styling supplies; styling the space (by laying the foundation, softening the lines, and personalizing with details); and finally, styling the food and table. Susie shows you how to make a living room come alive for a vintage-inspired birthday party; how to transform a dining room for a festive Thanksgiving; how to dress up a patio lunch with French flair; and even how to turn your lawn into an exotic Moroccan lounge for a summer gathering. Lavishly illustrated with 200 full-color photographs, each of the twelve makeovers are as inspirational as they are informational.

Full of quick-results styling tips for pulling any event together with economy and flair to spare, Styling for Entertaining eliminates the need for hiring caterers or renting spaces. This essential stylebook will help you transform even the simplest occasion into an opportunity to express yourself, entertain your guests with ease, and most important...have fun!

i have followed susie coelho's career since she first started with HGTV. Her latest book STYLING FOR ENTERTAINING is such a great find because it actually gives you step by step advice on how to transform space for entertaining, without breaking your budget....and also how small things can make a big difference in your home.

this book inspired me so much, that i invited friends over for drinks this past weekend and used some of her entertaining ideas
and let me tell you.....they were a big hit.

can't go wrong with this book or with susie coelho.

I think this book is fantastic. I am definitely going to use the Christmas idea for my home. Susie Coelho's style is so simple and elegant, I really love it. I also bought a book for my next door neighbor and she also enjoyed the book very much. I noticed Susie is hosting a television series called Outer Spaces on HGTV so I am going to tune into that as well.

      Book Description

As much as a decorator may admire antique furnishings, filling the home with well-worn originals entails many drawbacks: ferreting out, assessing, and restoring the original articles take time and effort, all for something that may, in the end, be inoperable -- not to mention, of course, that high-quality antiques can be quite expensive. So here is a sensible alternative in the manner of the most ingenious of Martha Stewart's tricks: transforming ordinary new (or nearly new) objects into beautiful period-style objets. Organized by the amount of time each project requires -- from one-hour wonders to weekend makeovers -- these creative transformations include candlesticks, jewelry boxes, lamps, planters, urns, cushions, chairs, chests, and washstands.
The styles represented also run the gamut from the medieval to Victorian side chairs, French Provincial to Edwardian and Regency. Also included with the amply illustrated instructions for each piece are at-a-glance, easy-to-follow primers on the preparation of wood, decorative and antique finishes, basic equipment, safety precautions, and even a directory of suppliers.

Whether you want to learn tricks of the trade or just the basics, Grand Finishes for Carpentry can help make your home carpentry project a fun, simple, and rewarding experience. In this easy-to-understand instruction manual, Matt Nikitas takes both the unskilled beginner and the seasoned pro through molding installation, with emphasis on each step of the process and the tools it takes to give you the home you've always wanted.Beginning with the five joints--butt joint, outside miter, coped joint, scarf joint, and mitered return--Nikitas lets uninitiated readers and do-it-yourselfers understand what they'll be constructing, and where and why. But even the seasoned home carpenter will find valuable tips, entertaining on-the-job stories and important advice (should you invest in a chop saw? a pneumatic nail gun?) that can help anyone make all the right decisions about molding installation.Grand Finishes for Carpentry also offers an in-depth description of the various items that make up the carpenter's toolbox for molding installation, including chisels, planes, the hammer, nail set, the saws, files and rasps, T-bevel, and try square.Just a few of the topics this guide covers: * how to assess and purchase the molding stock * base moldings in your home: both single-piece and multiple-piece * quick and easy picture molding installation * wainscotting design * did moldings appear first as ornament or necessity? * wood and its durability * multiple-piece crown moldings * the three carpenters: the Framer, the Millworker, and the Interior Finisher * various window header configurations * MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) * installing base and crown moldings on uneven surfaces * cutting odd inside and outside corners (other than forty-five degrees) * "greasing" the nail * finishing with paint or stain and polyurethane

1 out of 5 stars not very good.......2006-03-03

I actually must have checked this book by accident, but I read it anyway. Im a professional carpenter, so I would say, If you know what a hammer and saw are then you dont need to read this book.I guess Im being a little cruel. If you dont have a single clue about carpentry then this book is ok for you. we make better drawings on the job.

5 out of 5 stars Thorough and Easy to Follow.......2005-02-01

This book had thorough and very straight-forward instructions for basics like crown and base molding and more complicated things like wainscoting and windows and doors. We used it to put in a wainscoting trim in our dining room: there was no bull or misleading steps. We followed the author's instructions exactly and had no surprises! It all went in great! Our neighbors think I should become a carpenter now! It's a wonderful book for a beginner.

            5 out of 5 stars inspiring project.......2002-03-15

I know very little about working with wood or the tools needed and GRAND FINISHES FOR CARPENTRY was a perfect choice for me. It didn't insult my intelligence and was never condescending yet explained everything so clearly. I have two other molding books but this one pointed out several of the problems I might have encountered, whereas the others glossed over them. Though not a lot of pictures I thought there were just enough for me to accomplish creating and installing my own wainscoting in our diningroom. My wife even helped, and we both enjoyed the whole process.

2 out of 5 stars basic info - little else.......2002-03-11

I was disappointed in "Grand Finishes". A great review in the L.A. Times led me to purchase it sight-unseen. It arrived and I was surprised to see very few photos and prety much no ideas for design. Far from grand... There is some good basic info on tools and terminology, to be sure, but "step-by-step" seems a stretch. The installation of wainscoating, a large and potentially complicated project, is covered in just a few pages with mostly sketches and small black and white photos. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone looking for a guide on an upcoming molding project.

5 out of 5 stars Grand Finishes For Moldings.......2001-12-08

I was surprised to read the earlier negative reviews. I found the instruction thorough and very clear: I've put in base molding before but got a lot out of the crown installation step-by-steps. The book's VOICE OF EXPERIENCES had many helpful hints that added a little levity to my projects but also pointed out several pitfalls I might not have ordinarilly known about. This is the third book of Nikitas's that I've purchased and I use them ("GRAND FINISHES FOR WALLS AND FLOORS" and "GRAND FINISHES FOR TILE") religiously as reference books. Definitely a keeper.
