5 out of 5 stars My New Home Decorating Bible.......2007-08-22

I bought several books trying to help me get my home decorated in my style, but not really knowing my style. I have never really had enough money to decorate a home before so after 10 + years of marriage, I wanted this home to show a bit of my personality. This was the key ingredient I needed to spark my imagination. The color combinations really do have emotions that are triggered and helped me to find the right colors for the moods I want in my home.

One fair warning, after reading this, you may end up wanting to go with colored trim. We are learning quick, changing your trim color is either time consuming (if you are a diy) or expensive (if you hire it done). But so far it has been worth it; the colors really play off each other. Even one of the painters I had give me a bid wants a copy of Color Scheme Bible.

The other decorating books will end up more of coffee table items for looking, but not very helpful. You can't copy someone else's style when you know you have your own. It just helps to have something to spark that style, and since I didn't have a treasured fabric or plate or something that designers like to use, I had to use this Bible.

My English written book came with several pages in German, though. Hopefully, they have resolved that problem. But I wasn't willing to part with it long enough to return it and wait for a new one to be sent, it has been a well used resource for my new home.

5 out of 5 stars Great Inspiration.......2007-06-14

This book has a lot of ideas and inspiration about colours. Some schemes are daring, but all of them seems an professional work!

3 out of 5 stars Colour combination chart in spiral book form with hard cover.......2007-06-08

A book that is more for carrying around when colour schemes are being planned. It is small in size. Each page has an imaginative and inspiring title that distinguishes one combination of colour from another. It does not have many interior design photographic examples of the combinations suggested. It is like a palette with suggestions.

4 out of 5 stars just one little thing I didn't like.......2007-04-13

The color combinations are nice, but the photographs do not represent
all different kinds of design styles, only one, simple and sparse. Most people don't live in homes that are so plain, so it is impossible to know how these colors would look in more expensive "designer" spaces.

5 out of 5 stars Just what I needed!.......2007-03-01

I love color and I was always working to try to find color schemes for rooms in our home and often ended up finding that I'd picked something that felt lifeless or didn't fit us. This book is just exactly what I was looking for! I stumbled across it in the library when we moved to our most recent residence. What a find! The authors include dozens of potential palettes along with information about the mood, potential executions and inspirations behind the choices they offer. This is now my secret decorating weapon. For the first time, I feel like a grown-up when I set up a home!

5 out of 5 stars color in interior design.......2007-09-21

As a lay person just interested in learning more about the use of color in interior design, this was an excellent book. While the first several chapters were very "text bookish", the remainder was very layman friendly. I feel more confident in undertaking color projects in my home and in conversing about the use of color with friends, who are now asking my opinions. The chapters that helped me the most were on the color wheel and color relationships. I enjoyed it and will now pursue my interest in color and design.

There are zillions of books on this complex world of color.

This one is the best for all Interior Designers, students and teachers, it is written by John F. Pile, an authority in Interior Design. You will enjoy learning the Color Systems for your business, and covers the historical aspect of of the Bauhaus School of Design, and also color in Historic Interiors, including artists and personal experiences.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Jewelry designs make the book.......2007-10-11

Unfortunately, the title is a misnomer IMHO, yet the jewelry designs and color combinations are striking. However, if you are a beader/jeweler focused on seed beads (or others types), I would recommend using Margie Deeb's book "The Beader's Guide to Color." This book really provides useful color combinations that one can adapt to their jewelry designs, seed beads or other gemstones (crystals, natural stones, etc.).

Wallace's book has some of the most beautiful uses of beads in appropriate colors that please the eye in more ways than color alone. One caveat though - you have to be an intermediate to advance beader/jeweler as there are little to no directions with the beaded designs demonstrating a color combination, except for a small section in the back of the book. A follow-up book by Wallace on step-by-step discussion on the earlier designs would be welcome addition.

5 out of 5 stars Good book for all.......2007-09-27

This is a great book for anyone who loves beading. I have been beading for a number of years and find that you sometimes get stuck with "your colours". This book is great for getting you to move outside your zone without having to think too hard. Also has beautiful jewelry which will inspire your own creativeness

4 out of 5 stars great addition to beading library!.......2007-08-23

I was very pleased with this book though I'll admit I am a bit jaded, having been a devotee of Margie Deeb's book[ASIN:0823004872 The Beader's Guide to Color]for several years. That being said, there are many reasons to suggest Ms Wallace's book. Her 30 page chapter on color theory covered nearly everything the average beader needs to know, short of a semester coarse of study. The vast array of innovative color themes are full of fresh and inspiring ideas. There are a fair number of projects included in the last chapter that demonstrate to the reader, through illustration, how each project would look in three of four different color combinations. Personally, however, I feel the best part of this book lies in the color scheme chapter. Here the author includes a useful graphic with each sample of beadwork, clearly showing the percentages of each color used.
As a beading teacher, I will refer my students over and over to this book for that simple addition alone! As a beader and designer, I'm sure I will find many reasons to choose Ms Wallace's book from my personal library shelves when I need help with a project.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book with lots of eye candy!.......2007-08-19

I've been beading for a few years, but always feel like I struggle with color choices. Recently I purchased Margie Deeb's book, but felt like I still wanted more information, so I also just bought Sandra Wallace's book. While they do cover some of the same information, they are a wonderful complement to each other, and I'm so glad that I now have both of them.

As other reviewers have mentioned, this book is divided into three sections. The first section talks about color theory and how to use a color wheel to create interesting color combinations. While Deeb's book uses the CYM color wheel, Wallace's book uses the standard color wheel.

In the second section of the book, Wallace provides over 150 examples of various projects from other bead artists that are grouped according to various color schemes (with titles like Volcano, Floral Fantasy, Faded Roses, etc.). It is in this second section of the book where Wallace provides the details about the percentage of beads used in each project. This section alone is worth the cost of the book! The samples are just wonderful, and Wallace explains how each one uses the color theory (analogous, complementary, etc.) she had discussed in Part 1. This section has such wonderful eye candy, and I know I will be going back to it many times in the future for inspiration.

The third section of the book has 10 sample projects, complete with instructions. Each of those 10 projects also has diagrams for how to make that project using other color combinations so you can really see how changing the color scheme affects the overall look of your piece.

All in all, this is a wonderful book, and I'm definitely glad I purchased it!

4 out of 5 stars Inspiration Galore!.......2007-08-15

I bought this even thought I have Margie Deeb's "A Beader's Guide to Color" and I'm very glad I did. While Deeb's book concentrates a lot on theory Wallace's is packed with actual beadwork pieces of every style to demonstrate her color combinations. Every photo is broken down into the percent of each color used, making it easy to translate her color balances into your own designs.

If you're looking for a basic how-to book, this one's not for you. No beading instructions are given, only a brief mention of the stitch(es)use in the piece being discussed. However, those with some experience under their belt will find themseles returning again and again for a fresh look at using different color combinations. This book is a great source of inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars A good reference book.......2007-06-08

Learning from experience takes too long. It is better to read this book so that designing with the right combination of colours is more cost effective and less hassle.

4 out of 5 stars Good color combos.......2007-03-09

This is a good book on color for your home.
The first part of the book covers the color wheel and basic color theory. It's nothing new, and not really detailed, but a nice overview.
Then each chapter focuses on a different main color. The pictures of the rooms are beautiful - very much like you might see in Better Homes, Country Home, or Country Living magazines - and usually show a good use of the color scheme they are portraying. It is not too trendy, most seem like you could live with them for many years.
I would have liked to see deeper and brighter oranges though. Leaned heavily toward apricots and corals.
Also needed more warm-toned browns.
The end of the book has all the color schemes used in the book, for matching to paint chips or fabric samples. Also a nice way to match color schemes if you were planning a whole house, since the main color in a plan turns up as an accent in other plans.
This book could also be useful to crafters looking for new colors to try together. I'm thinking of using some of the color schemes in knitting.

4 out of 5 stars Very helpful.......2007-01-09

This is a great reference book. Having just built our home, I needed some professional help in the coordination of the colours I wished to use and it gave me some fresh great ideas I would never have thought of on my own. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful & Inspiring!.......2007-01-05

This book offers some rare inspiration that I've been hard pressed to find elsewhere. What it does especially well is lay out multitudes of color combinations that one would not normally think of as harmonious...then provides great photographs of actual rooms tastefully done in these purposed color schemes.

I'm a Garden Designer by profession ...not an interior decorator...but there are very few color guide books relating to plants thathave anything new to say. I often rely on the tools of Interior Designers & their books for help. I've bought several books on the this topic & this book is by far one of the best....& it's not only helpful indoors but has been useful in giving me ideas for outdoor groupings of furniture & planters, house colors etc too....

I highly recommend it & suggest anyone looking for new & innovative color schemes check into getting this book!

5 out of 5 stars Unique and helpful.......2006-05-18

Excellent book to provide inspiration and ideas for selecting and mixing color schemes. Information is divided by color families. Each room has a sample color palette. In addition there is a complete section at the back of all the color palettes used so you can bring them with you when you select your paint. I refer to this book often.

Book Description

This rare book invited homeowners of the Victorian era to eschew "white houses with green blinds" and join in the revolutionary trend towards colorful houses. They explain clearly how to mix primary and secondary colors to achieve such popular, mellow tones of the period as olive, russet, citrine, buff, plum, and sage. 20 color plates.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars How to mix colors.......2007-03-08

To quote the book, "Those of our readers who expect to find lists comprising all the various scales of color, giving definite information as to what particular color should be used to harmonize with this or that shade, and telling just what combinations are allowable, and just what are to be condemned, will, therefore, be disappointed." This book covers how to prime wood and mix colors (reddish brown color is achieved by mixing Indian red and burnt umber) and does give specific color schemes. This is a reprint from 1883, and the authors mentioned that the printer could not replicate most of the color schemes they envisioned (maybe I need to get watercolor paint and mix the suggested colors to see what they intended). We are building a Victorian home, and I was looking for ideas of what worked well in the past, but the rust red, dark mustard yellow, greens and browns they showed did not inspire me as I had hoped. It does have helpful information about color selection, but it is fairly generic in nature. Most of the plates are house exteriors, but there are a few interior plates as well.

3 out of 5 stars Simpla & Basic.......2006-02-22

Good for someone with a need for very basic color scheme for historic homes. No imagination needed. Colors are boring by our modern day standards, but give the old world look desired in the older victorian neighborhoods that despise the brighter californian look.

4 out of 5 stars It's color schemes. Not color theory........2006-08-26

Every quilter gets stumped, at some point, when considering the fabrics and colors to use in a quilt. None of us want to invest the considerable amount of time, energy, and love that goes into creating a quilt, only to have the end result appear muddy, or garish, or with one color clashing with another.

The Quilter's Color Scheme Bible does indeed show you 700 variations of color on quilt blocks and in (somewhat abbreviated) quilts (that is, you see a 3x3 grid, not an entire quilt). Each page in the easy-to-flip-open book shows a given block (say, a bear's paw), with 7 examples of color schemes that will work. Since the book is separated by theme -- harmonious colors, saturated colors, shades, etc -- the most common blocks are shown with a couple dozen color combinations. So if you're stumped for how to choose colors with "puss in the corner" and not sure whether it'll work better with fall leaf colors or lilac shades, this book should certainly help you make choices. Certainly, it's rather stunning to see how your color choice can change the mood of the quilt or the patterns your eye follows.

However, this book isn't about teaching you to _think_ in color. It's primarily giving you a handy menu shortcut to help you _choose_ color. If you're staring at two indigo fabrics in your stash and wondering what would contrast best with them, this book could be a helpful tool. (I think I could accomplish almost as much by browsing colors in Electic Quilt 5, but the book is a lot cheaper than the software.)

One sign that this is not a book that is serious about explaining how color "works" and how to make your own choices is that its color wheel repeats an old error... one that makes me wince every time I see it. The color wheel is presented with the primary colors as red, yellow, and blue -- when that is NOT SO. The "blue" that you first met as a primary color in kindergarten is actually _cyan_. In most of life, who cares -- but this is a book about color, and it ought to be explicit and correct. Amazon has several books about color theory for quilters, but the one with which I'm most familiar (and I like quite a bit -- I learned a lot) is Color Play: Easy Steps to Imaginative Color in Quilts, by Joen Wolfrom.

As a result, the value of this book varies based on what you're shopping for. If you want a "Cliff's Notes" to color choices, this one will do just fine. It will not serve your needs adequately, however, if what you seek is a book to help you "think better" about color.

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading if you're decorating with feng shui .......2005-03-09

Feng shui recommends colors for each area of your home or business. However, turning this into an impressive color scheme often requires advice beyond standard feng shui books. "Annie Sloan's Color Schemes: For Every Room" is one of the very best if you want your surroundings to look as if you've hired a professional decorator.

Let's say that you're working on your Fame and Reputation area, which is often what visitors see first when they enter your home or office. Red is recommended, but... then what?

In Annie Sloane's lavishly illustrated book, you can start at the "Reds Plus" page and choose a color theme. For example, if you'd like a Pacific Islands look, start with Hibiscus Red--a slightly orange-ish red--and accent it with Gauguin Blue, a greyish medium blue.

Next, turn to the Pacific Islands section of the book and see the many other colors that will work well with your basic red and blue "islands" theme. You may want to add Banana Leaf Green, Lagoon Blue, Guava Orange, or Mango Yellow.

And, if these colors don't sound familiar, the book is filled with good, large swatches. You can take the book to the paint or home furnishings store to match the looks that you like.

If you'd prefer an African Visions theme for your Fame area, Ms. Sloan suggests starting with Ghana Red and Clearwater Green. If your tastes are more traditional and favor antiques, choose the Neoclassical colors of Aubusson Pink and a lovely bamboo shade of brown called Sandstone.

For your Money area, instead of overloading the corner with purples, choose an Elizabethan Pageant theme, and a muted Lavender Sachet shade, accented by a lovely pale Cambridge Blue. If you favor vivid colors reminiscent of fine art and the coast of France, Ms. Sloan offers an Impressionist palette. Or, Mambo Carnival colors may liven up an otherwise sedate or dark corner.

What I like best about this book is that it helps me to break out of the "crayon box colors" approach to feng shui. I'm using this book when decorating, but also for innovative color combinations in my art and photography.

If you're working with color for any reason, but especially with feng shui, I heartily recommend "Annie Sloan's Color Schemes: For Every Room." --Aisling D'Art, Feng Shui editor, BellaOnline

3 out of 5 stars Eye-opener.......2003-08-14

How many people can put together a room's palette, in the right tone and hue, all the way down to the third accent color. Not me.

This book was fun to study. The colors she picks really do work well together. I sort of felt like I was cheating a bit to think to just lift the entire palette from the page and use in my apartment, but on the other hand, "traditional" color schemes use standard collections as well.

I liked the Manhattan styles most. Yes, they did remind me of some "crisp" apartments I've seen.

When I purchased this book I was searching Amazon.com for a Spanish book for my child.... Much to my dismay, when the book arrived it was English and FRENCH! I have no intention of introducing my toddler to French this early as we are a biligual English and Spanish household, and I want to get her accustomed to Spanish first.... If you want a French-English book on colors for your little one, this is fine, but I wasn't looking for this at all.

I was VERY pleased-- this book was exactly what I was looking for for my little one, who we're teaching both french and english. It's very simple-- the english word, the french word, with pronunciation underneath. All the books in this series are great.

1 out of 5 stars Dissapointing!.......2004-05-15

Can you imagine? This is a book about colors of the web and it has mistakes about it! The book shows green while the correct color should be pink, etc. Yes, there's a page whose the correction... but do I have to see the revised page every time I want to mix colors???? What a wasting time! :(

4 out of 5 stars For the Hard Core.......2004-02-26

Screw the mistakes..There's a perfectly good errata addemum you can reference. This book is for the web design obsessed. It's open on my desk 90% of the time I work on a site. It's simple direct and primarily a reference book. The chapter intro's are short, well written and informational. I'm pretty savy with design but I could never come up up with these great combinations. I love this book..

1 out of 5 stars Not very useful.......2002-12-11

I expected a book full of web examples to learn about color at internet. But all I found is some few examples of webs and loads of color combinations that are not very useful for me.

1 out of 5 stars Do not buy this book..........2002-11-14

The book is fantastic, in fact I got it at Borders recently but discovered it was the first printing with all the wrong colors. I returned it, then came to Amazon figuring they would have the latest edition. They don't. I ordered it here and just got it today, it is the first edition with the little supplement color correction sheet. It is too cumbersome to cross reference the colors and if I am paying for a book, I should not be expected to do that. So, very disappointed. Great book...but Amazon should have the newer version that is supposedly out there I feel.

1 out of 5 stars This one needs a minus rating!!.......2002-10-15

The author published corrections on the web site, but they are too numerous to make the book worthwhile. As you flip through the pages and think you've found a color combination, you then have to compare it against the error list... what a pain - the errors have made the book worthless for what the stated intent was. If you simply want to be able to look at three colors next to each other to see what you might like, it does that. Try then to use the RGB scale for the corresponding numbers, and that's when the 'fun' begins of uncovering error after error!!

Once again Lennart Lundh has created a book that is important to aviation and military enthusiasts, historians, and modelers. His well researched book lifts the cover off of the obscure world of US Army aircraft color schmemes and markings. With never-before-seen details, line drawings and rare photographs, Lundh's long overdue account provides a rare look at the fascinating world of Army aviation. I look forward to forthcoming titles from Lennart Lundh. Highly recommended.
