inspiring designs.......2007-02-25
I'm a woodturner who likes to decorate the bowls I make. This book has given me several ideas that I've used successfully. I've gotten several copies for members of my woodturning club and one copy for the club library. We're always looking for new ways to enhance the simple wooden bowl and this book provides many useful ideas. Highly recommended.

Gorge yourself on gourds!.......2005-07-07
What a great book! I took a gourd coiling class and the instructor had this book. I couldn't wait to get my own copy! This book is so thorough. From cover to cover it's filled with information, pictures and ideas, you can't help but be inspired. I was, and now I'm "gourding" like crazy!
LOVE IT.......2002-12-01
This is a great book for beginners such as myself. It gives good project ideas and instruction to complete projects. Also a good section on gourd history.

The Voice of Inexperience.......2006-12-27
I have no natural artistic talent and no art experience, so I thought this book which promises "quick and easy techniques" would be perfect for me. However, I've been practicing Donna Dewberry's techniques for two months and still can't perfect the brush strokes. My opinion is that the words "quick and easy" are false advertising and should be removed by the publisher.
Donna Deewberry's Complete Book of One-Stroke Painting.......2006-03-10
Excellent book. Would recommend to anyone interested in acrylics.
I can finally paint!.......2003-07-08
I always wanted to be an artist, and with Donna's easy-to-follow techniques, I can now paint! Before, I drew rotten stick figures, but Donna had me painting like a pro in nothing flat! I have given items away as gifts, and have had requests for items! I've been concentrating on clay flower pots, but I now feel ready to branch out to bigger and better things! Thanks Donna!
Buy It! You'll thank me later! :).......2002-10-27
One Stroke Painting is the way to go! This book is a must have!
If you ever wanted to learn to paint, here is your chance.
Beginners - you too, will produce results in no time. The instructions and illustrations are straightfoward and easy to understand. I did a rose and rosebuds on a french bucket. No one would believe I did it freehand (no pattern). I had never painted a day in my life, before buying this book.
Experienced - expand your repetoire!
Easy to follow.......2002-04-29
Great for beginners. I'm already on my fourth project and each one gets better.

Found book arrangement difficult.......2005-04-27
A College textbook or reference-type book. Comprehensive--fine print. Seemed a good read, but I didn't like the set-up. All text was in the front, and the examples and photos were grouped in the back. One would need to flip back and forth to view examples of the subject matter. Didn't work for me.
This is the only reason I gave it a low rating, and returned the book.
The Complete Guide to Furniture Styles.......2003-01-28
As a college educator in the history of architecture, furniture and the decorative arts I think the Boger is a very good overall text both to students and interested others. Information on furnitre prior to Gothic is the weakest, and would reccomend other texts to satisfy those needs. Photographic reproduction quality in some instances barely passable.
Great book for a history of furniture styles!.......2001-03-01
I have to disagree with the previous reviewer--this book is FILLED with pictures in the back half of the book. The pictures are disappointingly all black and white, but it keeps the cost down I suppose. This is the best resource for visual identification of styles from Egyptian through Twentieth Century that I have seen, and I have seen quite a lot of them. The front half of the book is very detailed information about each of the styles as well as specific pieces within each style. It's not something you can read from cover to cover, as the details would quickly overcome you. But it is a wonderful reference book for anyone who wants to be able to look up a particular style, read about it, and look at many pictures to visually understand general characteristics of the style.
Good written description of history and style.......2000-06-09
THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO FURNITURE STYLES is a well written guide to the history of different periods of furniture. It states the history of the period and crucial pieces with a description of the piece. There are very few pictures, so if you are looking for a guide to train your eye to note characteristics of period pieces, this will not help you. If you are looking for a written description of the pieces, this book is for you.
Book Description
No matter how beautifully decorated a room is, it doesn't matter if no one can see it. Interior designers know the importance of good lighting placement, because it is the key that can literally transform a home. Although correct lighting placement is this book's central theme, it goes much further to discuss everything from basic lighting principles and practices to new technologies, issues of energy efficiency, and new trends in computer automation, followed by a practical guide for analysis and planning, execution, and installation, offering creative solutions to a wide range of illumination issues.
While the information is oriented to a professional design audience, the practical information and advice is just as useful to do-it-yourselfers and homeowners who take on their own lighting projects.
Each topic includes a visual guide and the author even includes room-by-room lighting strategies. Full-color photographs of interiors and drawings illustrate detail and specifics of placements and design features.
Customer Reviews:
Basic Principles... Advanced Application.......2007-01-15
While this book is less How-To and more Inspiration, it is a great book for both the home owner and the home planner. It focuses on basic lighting principles (which are useful for anyone trying to properly light their home) illustrated through advanced lighting applications (architectural elements and features incorporated during the planning, building, or renovating of a home).
It illustrates lighting techniques for each room in the home with emphasis on different areas of the room that require different kinds of lighting. Lighting for both day and night, and a special section on exteriors, are explored.
The examples and illustrations in this book are from homes where lighting design was considered in the initial construction, and money and resources were apparently not an object. While unattainable, they are inspirational.
For those of us who don't own our home, or cannot remodel (due to financial, zoning or other restrictions) this book provides some basic lighting principles that are still useful and applicable when lighting a home. In general, there are three levels of lighting to complete any room:
1. Ambient lighting-an indirect light that provides overall illumination
2. Task Lighting-focused light for work spaces (ie-kitchen counters, desk-tops, bedsides, reading chairs, etc.)
3. Accent lighting-any light used to draw attention to a featured object (art, sculpture, architectural elements)
Thought the examples are not really anything you could achieve in your own home, it gives you ideas on how to incorporate these types of lighting for both day and night, and interior and exterior.
The book title really says it all.......2007-01-06
With this book, there is truth in advertising. I'm an architect and I do a lot of resdential design. I've found this book to be quite useful and would recommend it to archtects and contractors that build on spec.

Customer Reviews:
Completely Outdated!!!.......2006-12-15
I plan to attend F.I.T or Parson's soon.
This book is completely outmoded and does NOT reflect the current figural sketch-like freehand drawing in fashion design.
The book was produced in 1996 and seems even outdated for that year... big shoulders, models are much too literal, etc.
Great Transaction!.......2005-09-17
the book was in good condition and shipped quickly! thanks for a great experiance!
Definitely worth reading!.......2002-01-13
I thought that this book had alot of really helpful ideas and tips.Personally, this book has improved my skills from "not so good" to unique and lifelike! My regards go out to Sharon Lee Tate and Mona Shafer Edwards...Excellent Job on writing an outstanding book!
bad drawing book.......2001-05-29
This book is poorly put together. It looked as if it had been copied and it was even double copied on some pages. It also had no cover or colored pages. Figures are small proportions, not up to date with fashion figures. It was a bunch of copied pages
Content = 5 stars Quality of book itself = 2 stars.......2000-06-11
Yes, this book is very helpful with developing design skills. The only thing I was unhappy with when I recieved it in the mail was that on the preview of it on this website Amazon.com it looks as though it would be in color...only when it came it looked like it was xeroxed (and a bad job at that) it was obviously printed in color to begin with but has since been printed in black, gray & white. For instance, it goes to describe a color scale but the "color" scale is gray & black. It also has a section about highlights & skin color yet alas, it is gray & black...Very helpful but at the same time very disappointing...

Book Description
There's nothing like the joy of decorative painting--transforming an ordinary object into a one-of-a-kind work of art! It all starts with your first stroke. And there's no easier, more enjoyable way to learn that first stroke (and the second and the third ... ) than with this comprehensive visual guide.
Inside, you'll see every basic stroke--from the comma stroke to the S-stroke--broken down into several steps and illustrated in easy-to-follow worksheets. You'll learn proper brush techniques for single-loaded strokes , double-loaded strokes , tipped strokes, side-loaded strokes, and linework. Before you know it, you'll be using what you've learned to paint pretty flowers, beautiful borders, and even complete designs! These strokes are the "building blocks" of virtually every decorative painting style--so once you master them, there's no limit to the decorative magic you can create!
Customer Reviews:
Very good book.......2004-03-04
I never thought that I'll like another one stoke book after Donna Dewberry's books but this book is really good for beginners and professionals. The first 70 pages shows the basics of one stroke painting. Then there are lots of border examples which can be made easily by the beginners. After them, the real painting comes. 6 beautiful projects are shown step by step so you can understand and make the same projects easily. I recommend this book to everyone.
Too technical for my taste.......2003-10-03
You'll like this book if you are:
1. Left-brained and over-analytical
2. Like things written in a technical manner
3. Prefer simple things broken down in many steps.
If you like things written in a simple manner, don't buy this book.
I bought this book and ended up returning it. I found the instructions too technical and tedious. The instructions read more like "the anatomy of a brushstroke," where one brushstroke would be broken down in so many steps that you could get lost. "Angle your brush to the corner, in your minds's eye picture 2 o'clock, at this point put pressure...now curve, lift..." and we have 5 more steps to go. OK, I might be exaggerating but I'm trying to give you the gist of it. There are NO WORKSHEETS, except for 2 pages that look like a ROAD MAP which tell you where your brush should be positioned and where it should end up after you complete the stroke. You really should take a look for yourself to see how confusing this book is.
There are so many better, simplier, more comprehensive and enjoyable (let's not forget that) decorative painting books out there, that I suggest you bypass this one. I gave it 2 stars because someone who is more technically-oriented might find it useful.
Great Book!.......2000-05-17
This is a wonderful book describing basic brushstrokes for Decorative Painter's. There is a good explanation of brushes and their uses. The techniques are well explained and easy to follow. After practicing for a relatively small period of time, I was painting things that I felt comfortable showing other people. And those people knew what I had painted! Actually, they were quite impressed! The only reason I did not give this book 5 stars is that I have seen some Decorative Painting books that are slightly more thorough although they tend to be more expensive. I would recommend this book to a beginning Decorative Painter.

Good Home Improvement Book.......2005-04-12
This book is really great. It has alot of space to write details about every room. It also includes appliance information for warranties. It gives you a checklist of items to look at before you move in your house, a monthly checklist and a six month checklist. It is good to write in the deminsions of rooms, windows, etc to take to the stores when you need to buy supplies. I love the spiral bound because it is so much easier to deal with. Excellent Book!
Good organizing tool for the home. Very professional looking.......2004-10-14
I just got this book as a gift and it's exactly what I was looking for. I think the negative reviews here are referring to the first edition which must have been three-ring and photocopied, I don't know why they show here.
Anyway, this revised edition is awesome: professionally designed and printed, and chock-fill of good stuff. And, it's spiral bound and lays flat, not three-ring bound. Files perfectly with my house paperwork. I think it will keep me organized in the new home
Organizational Heaven.......2004-10-01
I was so excited to finally have a way to keep all of my dimensions, colors, and pertinent information about our home in one place. Now when my husband calls and needs me to pick up a part for the sink, stove etc. I simply take the book and the sales rep does all the rest. No more double trips to get the right item. I also am amazed at how much easier this book makes decorating my home. It's great to be able to pull out the book to see if something will fit in a particular room.
Good book.......2004-09-30
Getting this book was a real pleasant surprise. I'm very disorganized and it's frustrating because I can't seem to stay on top of things. I was kind of skeptical when I ordered the book because too many books are hyped, but I really have found this one helpful. One immediate benefit is that i now have a way to keep track of changes I'm making to my kitchen. I now have a way to remember the precise paints and tiles I used. I also liked the worksheets for furniture, the garage and that kind of stuff. It never occurred to me that keeping track of this stuff would make my life a whole lot easier.
Not as good as others.......2003-06-22
Unable to decide between this and a few books similar to it, I purchased them all so I could compare them side by side. I must agree with one of the other reviews that the pages are just photocopies that are spiral bound together...very cheaply made. And the information to record in this book isn't as nice as in others (2 for example sold here also...Our House Journal: The Story of Our Home, which is good for sentimental things like photos, and Welcome Home: A Home Improvement and Decorating Organizer, which handles the facts and sample information). I definately would not recommend this book to others.

Customer Reviews:
Not worth the price........2006-02-28
This book has no ideas that I didn't already find on free sites on the internet. What a disappointment. Ultimate Birthday Party, My Aunt Fanny!!!Save your money.
Not so creative..........2005-07-28
The themes are creative as well as the decorations (except for the home made piñata which is a little too fake) but the games are really very much the same ones in each of the different parties. You can just read the first one and nearly know the rest. I think they wasted a lot of paper to tell us the same things all over again in each party.
I highly recommend this book.......2005-06-24
Everything in the book is well organized, there are many different themes, each themed party includes creative tips and fun ativities on everything--from decorations to cakes to party favors.
gets the ideas flowing.......2004-03-23
This book provides lots of idea for kids' birthday parties - themes, activities, decorations, cakes, etc. On first glance, I thought it was exactly what I wanted, and indeed, it is a help. But the problem with the book is that with very many of the activities, the children get some sort of prize - a piece of candy, a little toy, etc. And then comes the cake, soda, and goody bag on top of that. I was looking for a book that offered activities which are done for their won sake and not for the reward (also because it costs money to buy all these things). Some of these activities, of course, can be done without the prize at the end. But for many of them, the prize plays a central role, like in the activity involving a lollipop tree.
throw a great kid's party.......2003-03-06
This book is an excellent resource for parents seeking help with children's birthday parties. It is filled with lots of terrific ideas for putting it all together, including: invitations, activities, cake decorations and favors all tied in to appropriate children's themes. A perfect way to make your birthday girl/boy feel really special.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful illustrations give great ideas!.......2007-08-09
This book is more for the beginner than advanced BUT it does have great ideas for every room in your home. It covers a wide variety of styles that are sure to please everyone. The book goes room by room, each covered in three sections; ready, set and decorate.
The getting "ready" section covers the different styles and materials used in decorating (i.e. fabric and window shapes in the window section) - this section clearly defines where to begin and what can be used to change it. The "set" section explains in further detail what needs to be gathered and decided before you decorate. The last section, "decorate" explains techniques used.
If you are interested in ANY of the techniques in this book, you must get additional resources for the "how to" instructions. This book is shy on that BUT it has lots of decorating tips and outlines that will really help any begining decorator.
Don't Waste Your Money.......2006-10-26
Even if you've never read a decorating book before, this book isn't one on which to waste your time and money. It's elementary (do we really need yet another explanation of the color wheel)and glib (don't even think about doing a faux finish based solely on the information in this book). I bought it used for about $2.50 and still think I overpaid.
Good ideas.......2006-06-29
This book has some good ideas to decorate. It is easy to understand. Unique plans for rooms.
