4 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Ideas.......2007-10-11

This book of only sketches is a great resource to jumpstart the creative process. I believe it is intentionally black and white so as not to distract with color and pattern. There are a wealth of ideas categorized so that you can mix and match within a particular category. It is a good inspiration piece from which you can proceed to either commission or design and create your own personal window treatment.

4 out of 5 stars Mainly Classic Designs.......2003-06-17

This book will not teach you how to sew curtains but it will give you loads of ideas for your window treatment. However, it is only ideal for those looking for classical designs since no modern styles are shown.

It also lacks new creative designs, I always felt that each design is familiar to me.

4 out of 5 stars Great source of ideas for elaborate window treatments.......2003-04-20

The book contains line drawings of styles for all the various elements of a window treatment as well as ideas for dealing with different kinds of windows. The book decomposes window treatments into pelmets, valences, etc., etc., etc., with pages of line drawings of styles for each element. Then, it pulls the various elements together into a total look.

I was leant this book, but I found it so helpful I bought my own. It has drawbacks. If you want something simple and/or you plan to make them yourself, this probably isn't the book for you. There are no instructions or measurements of any kind, just the drawings. But if you're working with a decorator who knows a professional, or are a decorator yourself, then this book will help your imagination run wild.

5 out of 5 stars The Curtain Sketchbbok 2 by Wendy Baker.......2002-06-13

This book is really great for any windows. Mostly if you are a interior designer. It gaves you lot of good examples which curtains will good in what rooms with different types of furnitures. This book gaves you something that no one esle has. You will be the first one to have that design in your room before someone esle does

4 out of 5 stars Curtain Sketchbook 2.......2000-03-28

This is a great book if you're looking for unique window treatments. I wanted something everyone else didn't have. It is not a how-to book but the illustrations are very detailed.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2007-02-20

This book gives you a wealth of knowledge and ideas. There are no "how to's" in the book however, so if you need sewing directions, you will need another reference. But there are charts on how to figure how much material you will need, and little hints about the types of fabrics that will look good and what to avoid with the different designs, so it is an excellent reference up to the point of actually making the drapes or curtains yourself.

5 out of 5 stars The 'bible' of window treatments..........2007-01-10

As an interior decorating shop, this book is an integral part of our work station. It helps us with practically every custom job we fabricate. Whether you are a professional, or just interested in decorating as a hobby, it educates you on every level, and is user-friendly. We highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars My comment is about the third edition (ISBN 0962473626) .......2006-12-31

Spiral-bound, ALL in color, ALL illustrations in full color. Beautiful book, and very easy to use, with the tabs it has that open it to the specific chapter I want.
The detailed instructions for materials needed, and construction, are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Great Idea Book for Window Treatments.......2006-03-11

This fifth edition has all the sketches in color. Just to give you an idea of how comprehensive this is, there are 19 pages showing valances, with five per page. I love this book, as it really opened our minds to the variety of styles available for windows. No more boring windows.
There's even a section for draperies, swags and valances used with beds.
I particularly liked the section "Windows With a Challenge" that showed solutions for such issues as an air conditioner in a double-hung window or dealing with arched top windows.
This has two index sections in the back. One is the usual word index and the other is a 38 page visual index showing the windows in black-and-white thumbnail sketches.
It's terrific, not just for professional decorators, but for all individuals wanting a new look for their home.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very good overall.......2007-07-24

This is a thoroughly enjoyable book. The pictures are beautiful and the instructions excellent. The projects are for every level of craftmanship, from glueing to weaving, from rather simple to more complex. I only whished there were even more of them included.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2002-01-12

I highly recommend "Dollhouse Decor: Creating Soft Furnishings in 1/12 Scale" to anyone interested in furnishing dollhouses or just at looking at pictures of how others have furnished theirs. The Forder's book is arranged by periods of style, and goes into a bit of detail about what makes each period's style unique. The projects are designed for all skill levels, from those who work best with a bit of glue and a pair of scissors, to those who enjoy doing their own weaving. Each project is preceded by a symbol to let the reader know the level of skill required. Yet regardless of the level, all the projects are well explained.
Equally enjoyable is the photography. There are none of the grainy pictures that are so annoying in some dollhouse books. Each photograph is large and clear, and shows the meticulous level of detail that the Forders put into their work.

5 out of 5 stars Great Reference Book .......2006-01-20

I ordered this book because I was out of ideas and needed some help with slipcovers. I have been sewing for more years than I can count, however, never to old to learn a few new tricks. I found this book to be very helpful, very simple instructions, step-by-step, they assume you are new at sewing, and take each step of the process & add photos so you can see what it is suppose to look like to keep you on track. I would suggest this book to anyone who wants to improve their sewing skills and/or new sewers or just looking for good ideas.

    2 out of 5 stars It's so-so.......2005-12-23

Its a good book for beginners, I am a beginner. ALOT of the projects in this book seem like they are from the early 80's (yuck) even though it was published in 2000. If looking for a how-to book this one is good with tips only. MOST of the projects are pillows and window treatments, with only a hand full of other projects. NOT a good book for the younger crowd looking for tips and projects for decorating their home. Or anyone looking for something modern. I personally was very disappointed, and there are book out there that are SO much better.

    4 out of 5 stars Book review.......2005-08-17

Very good book, with easy to follow instructions. My only reason for not giving it a 5-star rating was because I would have liked to see a few more curtain/drapery styles than were offered. Lots of really good tips in this book.

    5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Step-by-Step Instructions.......2004-01-29

I wish I had seen this book first! This one reference combines numerous topics in one. What I like best are the step-by-step instructions - with photos! I am new at sewing and being able to see what the steps should look like is extremely helpful. Also, the book covered every type of curtain I could think up does such a thorough job with pillow descriptions that I think of the slipcovers section as an added bonus. If you want to decorate your home with neat and professional looking work, get this book!

5 out of 5 stars Good on Pillows and Windows.......2002-12-25

I love this book , the instructions for pillows are just what I needed and the photos and inspiration for windows are perfect. More attention is paid to other types of decorating though than window treatments. Still this is among my top 5 favorite home decorating books.

    Book Description

Window top treatments - swags, valances, and cornices - are very popular DIY home-decor projects. Quick and easy to sew, they soften and finish off a window and often are combined with blinds, curtains, or drapes. The Complete Photo Guide to Window Top Treatments is the only book that tells how to choose the right style and construct it step by step. Color photographs show twenty top treatments in a variety of room settings, fabrics, and decorative hardware.

Each window treatment has detailed, step-by-step instructions for measuring the window, calculating yardage, cutting, sewing, and installing.

Following in the tradition of CPi's Windows with Style and Creative Window Treatments, The Complete Photo Guide to Window Top Treatments launches a new how-to series of window decor books.

4 out of 5 stars Good Basic Information for the beginning sewer.......2006-06-07

I would be what you call an intermediate sewer. I have quilted and sewn simple garments and home decor items for years. The reason I got this book was for some help in trying to determine the best way to construct and sew a lined bedspread, something I have not done yet. I did not find what I was looking for, the closest thing being the self-line valance, but I did not want self-lined. I checked this book out of the library, but I would definitely recommend it for the novice sewer. It has really good basic information about machines, supplies, how to sew a seam, matching fabric and more. It then goes into actual sewing projects from valances to cushions, napkins and pillows. Overall, I think this is a very good book for the beginning sewer.

    4 out of 5 stars A Decent Start.......2006-02-20

I am someone who bought a sewing machine, had ABSOLUTELY NO PRIOR SEWING EXPERIENCE and I must say, this little book has helped me tremendously. There are so many little things that people who already sew take for granted such as fabric information. Sure, like any book, you may run into something that you still don't quite get, but after my first couple of projects, I dared to do a very simple pattern for my daughter and she actually likes it. I also find that while sewing, I sometimes refer to the book for reassurance for a simple technique. Again, I'm totally brand new (2 1/2 weeks of sewing). The book goes from a simple square pillow and very gradually, gets on to things that are a little more challenging that wont completely freak you out. For instance, I sewed the basic pillow, and then moved on to a box style square pillow with stripes. Until then, I had no idea about what it took to match patterned fabric. This was a wonderful introduction for me. I'm not afraid to try the stuff in the book, and for me that is totally key. Surely it's worth the inevestment.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for the total novice.......2005-02-09

This book is easy to follow because of the clear photos you get for every step and along that the clear explainations. Every project is step-by-step, so it's easy to understand!
It explains everything from the very basics because the writer assumes that you know nothing about sewing.
The book starts out with the "How to use this book" chapter, then
the "Sewing basics" (principle parts common to all modern sewing machines)+ you'll need your own manual!
"Machine accessories" (all the things come with your machine and what to use them for and how),
"Getting ready to sew" (how to thread the machine, change the needle, etc),
then "Sewing your first seam" (very easy to understand and clear colord photos),
"Sewing Supplies" (pins, tape measure, shears, etc. you'll need for your projects),
and "Special products" (batting, twill tape, etc.) the explanation on how these products work, what to use it for and you get a photo so you'll know what to look for in the shop,
    "Fabric information"
    "Cutting decorator fabrics"
    "Matching designs"
    "Hand stitches"
Then finaly the "Sewing projects" which includes 20 home decor projects; scarf swags, few kind of valances, window coverings, placemats and napkins, tablecoth, cushions, seat covers, fleece throw, different kind of pillows, pillow cases, shams, duvet cover, shower curtain. Great looking projects! While you learn you make a lots of nice and useful stuff for your home.

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Designer Pillows? Not..........2007-10-13

Craft mirrors, gaudy jewels, shredded lame, and glitter glue are NOT what high end designer pillows are made of. Many of the pillows are beautiful in this book but are cheapened with the use of the above items. This is really not a book of sewing but more about fabric usage and decoration. I will definitely NOT buy any more publications of Christopher Nejman.

    2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2007-09-27

This book was not what I was expecting it to be so therefore; to me was a little disappointing. From the description, I thought it was going to have some nice pillow designs to chose from but in my opinion, the projects shown are very outdated and not the type of throw pillows I would use in my home. They are a bit too glitzy and not something you could actually lean against and be comfortable. I guess it would just come down to personal taste. On the other hand, if you are just learning to use a sewing machine - this book has good explanations of how to set up your machine's stitching options, tension settings, etc.

    5 out of 5 stars Christopher Nejman's Pillows.......2007-09-21

This is a fantastic book! If you are looking to push the envelope, then this book is for you! Christophers pillows are stunning, and his techniques are on the cutting edge and so creative. I highly recommend this book if you are someone who wants to create beautiful things for your home, and isn't afraid to break all those stuffy old sewing rules!

5 out of 5 stars Christopher Nejman Pillows.......2007-09-21

Christopher's Pillow book....WOW. He introduces and shows a whole new perspective to sewing, adventures in thread, colors and decorator pillows to the highest level. If there is a Vol 2 coming, I'm signing up now.

    1 out of 5 stars True disappointment.......2007-09-04

The reviews I read about this book had to be written by the author's mother. No one else could possible like any of the projects.

Bought as a gift for my daughter, at her request. From quickly looking through it, it seemed up to date in terms of projects and techniques.

5 out of 5 stars This Is The Book To Start With!.......2006-11-25

I've been sewing for many years, and I've only made the simplest of things for my home, namely plain curtains and throw pillows. I wanted to learn to do a proper job on curtains and drapes. I bought 4 books, this being one of them.

This book is an absolute great starter. Learn right away what kind of tools you will need, how to measure the windows, what kind of stitches you will need to use, just all kinds of fabulous get-down-to-basics information. Then learn how to properly construct your curtains.

This book includes basic curtains and drapes, shades, decorator pillows, table fashions and finally shower curtains and comforter covers and bedskirts. Projects are well photographed and detailed.

If you are a novice sewer or just want reference materials for your sewing library, this book and the next book, "More Sewing For The Home", are a great place to start. The second book covers things the first did not, and the projects are a little more sophisticated. I highly recommend both books.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent overview for the items you're most likely to make.......2005-07-04

I bought my first house six months ago. My house needs curtains, seat cushions, wall hangings. And I'm new to all of this; while I'm just-past-novice at sewing and quilting, I've never even paid attention to how one constructs a pillow.

As a result, I've looked at several books about home decor, and I've bought a few. So far, this book has helped more than the rest of 'em put together.

First, it doesn't try to make you a specialist. I don't need to make curtains in dozens of styles; I just want to make a few ordinary ones that look nice. By separating the book into sections, I get the most common designs without the advanced stuff I don't expect to need, and I don't have to buy four books. (Well, I probably wouldn't have bought one for tables, anyway.)

Another advantage to its lack of specialization is that it includes a few items you wouldn't find elsewhere, such as instructions for making a shower curtain. As it happens, I'd already finished that project before I got this book, but these would have helped me just as well. (As an aside: after making a shower curtain from scratch, I'd never buy another one. It's so easy, and it looks wonderful.)

Also, this book gives very clear instructions, with photos that really DO show the process. It also doesn't make assumptions about your sewing skill, or your comfort with the equipment. For me, the "Aha!" moment came when it explained that it may be helpful to use a walking foot (more commonly used in quilting) to deal with heavy or bulky fabrics. I'd already ripped out the seams on a seat cushion *twice* by the time I read that, and had become disheartened with the project. Armed with that single bit of knowledge, the project was finished in a weekend.

I've another cushion project to start -- my husband is building a window seat -- and then it's time to begin on the curtains and window shades. I did buy a few curtain-specific books, but I suspect I'll turn to this one first.

5 out of 5 stars Best Home Decor Sewing Book.......2003-07-16

This book is fantastic! It covers how-tos on all the basics! My experience with these kinds of books is that they'll show you how to make ruffled valances and rosette pillows, but never cover the basics, like how to make a cloth shade or a simple removable pillow case (ie. sans buttons and zippers which can intimidate the beginner). This book has it all, and also great hints for making the kinds of minor modifications that make a pillow/curtain truly "special." The best home deco sewing book I've seen.

5 out of 5 stars Very detailed instructions.......2003-06-09

Very helpful book, very informative and detailed instructions. You'll not regret getting it.

This book has very complete instructions for many types of window teatments. It is clear and well illustrated with photos. I used it to make inverted-pleat drapes for my guest room, and they turned out great! I was taking a home dec sewing class at the time, and I liked this book better than my required text book.
