Customer Reviews:
This is the best book a parent could have.......2007-09-21
I was recommended this book from my hospital. I love this book. I look at it every time I questions something about my baby. It has helped me so much. It's my baby bible. I would strongly recommend it to all parents. It has also saved many phone calls to my pediatrician. I now buy it for all my expecting friends.
Must have for new parents-to-be........2007-09-01
Great reference book! Every new parent should have this. It is fairly objective with a smattering of professional opinions. Easy to read. I read it front to back, and now refer to it as a reference for specific questions and situation that arise as my child grows.
Great Go to / Baby Bible .......2007-08-29
Comprehensive, funny and easy to read. I needed it and it was there for me!
Great for Basics on What to Expect.......2007-08-23
Not having much time for extensive research and reading a library of books, I'm enjoying working through this book. It's matter-of-fact, blunt, but funny, too. While I'm taking a laid back and open minded approach to what having 2 new babies will be like (twins), this book is definitely helping to relieve some of my anxiety of the unexpected, too. Is the dad-to-be not reading up too much on what to expect?? I recommend this book. It's easy reading that goes quickly, yet manages to be very informing, too.
terrific resource for first time moms!.......2007-08-17
i discovered this book in the waiting room of my ob/gyn office. i was flipping through it one day while i was waiting for my appointment while i was pregnant with my first child. i immediately went out and bought a copy. this book is a tremendous resource - especially if you are a first time mom. it kept me from calling the pediatrician's office about a dozen times because i could figure out what was going on with my child by reading about symptoms and conditions described in the book. i refer to it all the time. and i have several pregnant girlfriends now - all of whom i've purchased this book for as a gift. i can't endorse it highly enough!

Customer Reviews:
Some common sense, but much dangerous information sprinkled with politics.......2007-09-30
It's unfortunate that the American Academy of Pediatrics would use this book to push their political agendas about gun control. On page 389 it says
"The American Academy of Pediatrics strongly supports gun control legislation. We believe that handguns, deadly air guns, and assault weapons should be banned. Until handguns are banned, we recommend that handgun ammunition be regulateed, that restrictions be placed on handgun ownership, and the the number of privately owned handguns be reduced."
People who are buying this book are looking for baby advice, not political garbage. It's sad that AAP would stoop so low to include comments such as this.
They also make dangerous recommendations about how to put your child in the car seat on page 411:
"Place a small rolled up diaper or receiving blanket bewteen the crotch strap and your baby to prevent his lower body from sliding too far forward."
This is contrary to manufacturer's recommendations with car seats and any seat that uses a seat belt. In an accident the rolled up diaper/blanket would compress and cause the belts to be too loose, potentially causing additional injury or even allow the baby to come out of the belts/seat altogether.
I bought it as a Baby Shower GIFT.......2007-09-30
My friend said this book helped her, I'm going based on her review of it...I bought it for her a year ago and I seen it in her bathroom recently. So she's been reading it!
Great free book.......2007-09-09
My pediatrician gave me this book before my daughter was born. Similac pays for them. It was a helpful resource to know what she should be doing and signs of problems. While I wouldn't buy it, it was nice to have while she was little.
Only book you'll need.......2007-06-05
My daughter's pediatrician gave me this book at my New Mom appointment before she was born. It helped me out a lot. I recommend this book to anybody. It has all the information you need. In my experience, it covered ALL of my questions. It's the only book you'll need.
you NEED this book .......2007-05-28
I refer to this book ALL the time. It has everything you could possibly need to know in it. It is a MUST for any parent, especially your first.

Customer Reviews:
I wanted to like this book...but..........2007-09-03
During my pregnancy, Your Pregnancy Week By Week was my constant companion. I looked forward to reading the chapters for each week, learning about my baby's development, and considering different baby-related issues as my pregnancy progressed. The book was user friendly, cleanly laid-out, and easy to follow. Logically, as I was looking for books about infant care, I considered Your Baby's First Year Week By Week.
The layout of the book was similar to Your Pregnancy Week By Week. It included the familiar weekly chapters containing useful nibbles of information about what to expect from my baby and what kind of care to offer him. It covers a wide variety of issues, including baby gear, bathing, diapering, pets and babies, and all the things you would expect from a comprehensive parenting "manual."
However, as I dove below the surface a bit, I was disturbed at some of the content and appalled at some of the blatant errors I found in there. The most shocking example was in reference to the care of uncircumcised baby boys. The authors advise parents to gently retract a baby's foreskin to clean. Every reliable medical source, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, states clearly: don't ever retract a boy's foreskin, as forcible retraction could potentially lead to problems later in baby boy's life. I was also very upset to see the authors' take on breastfeeding, which again contradicted the official positions of the AAP and the World Health Organization. If Your Baby's First Year Week By Week can't even provide reliable information on these two fundamental infant care themes, then I don't feel inclined to trust the knowledge of the authors in any other matters.
In the end, I put this book back on the shelf and opted instead for a copy of Dr. Sears' Baby Book. I would strongly advise any expectant or new mother to give Your Baby's First Year Week by Week a miss.
Excellent book for those with COMMON SENSE.......2007-08-09
This is a wonderful book. It tells week by week, what the AVERAGE baby will be doing. It can be used as a wonderful guide to know how to assist your baby in growth, or it can be used as a guide to drive yourself insane because your baby is not doing a certain thing by a specific week. For example: Babies get their first tooth at the average age of 7 months. Since some babies are born with teeth, that means some must not get them until they are a year old. If you are the type of person who can see the book as a guide, it is a great one. If you are paranoid or a hypochondriac. DON'T BUY IT!
My favorite baby book!.......2007-07-05
I'm surprised by this book's bad reviews. This is my favorite baby book! I actually gave away my other baby books and kept this one. I saw all of the reviews when I was online buying a copy for a friend! I like how the book discusses baby's development week by week and the milestones are fun. The book has practical information and it's an easy read. Maybe to minimize distress, new parents should realize that their baby's development probably won't track precisely with the book's week by week discussions since every baby is different.
Great addition to your parenting library!.......2007-06-30
I must admit that I am a little baffled by the negative reviews about this book. I have many parenting books, but this one is one of my favorites. I don't bother getting too technical about what exact week my son is on, but I guesstimate which chapter to read by the month guidelines in parentheses in the chapter headings. This organization style works really well for me, actually. I love reading the short chapters when I have a minute during naptime or bedtime. I skip over anything that doesn't interest me and use the index to reread any sections that I have an immediate interest in--i.e. rashes if I see a red spot on my son's skin. The developmental milestones in the book have corresponded amazingly well to my son's progress. Sometimes I didn't even notice a new ability or behavior until I read about it in the book and then recognized it in my baby.
My favorite part, though, are the Toys and Play This Week sections at the end of each chapter. I love these extra songs, games, and play suggestions that correspond to my baby's development, and so does my son. The book is worth buying for those alone. I have not agreed with all the advice in the book, certainly. I use cloth diapers and I have not fed my child as many types of solid foods as the book recommends for a baby of his age, for example. But like many other parents, I have lots of different books and I like to read the different opinions and then do what my doctor and I think is best for my baby. Babies are so different and parenting advice so varied that I can't imagine there is a book out there that would completely, 100 percent correspond to my baby and my parenting style. I wouldn't take anything I read in a parenting book as incontrovertible truth. The bottom line for me is that this is a wonderful book to use to get a general idea of what developmental milestones to look for in your new baby and find some creative games to play with your child as they progress through their first year of life.
This book was our bible! A+A+A+.......2007-05-13
This book was our bible!!!! It went with us everywhere. We had our first son and didn't know what the heck we were doing! He had alot of issues in the beginning with jaundice, acid reflux, diaper rash, fifth's disease, you name it and this book answered so many questions for us on whether or not we were overreacting or being safe. I read the other reviews on the book and maybe it wasn't on point on the one subject for that one reviewer but overall, the book covers nearly any problem that may arise and gives some sound advice that worked great for us and since, my sister, 2 cousins, 3 friends and a 2 co-workers...I highly recommend!!!!!!!

Customer Reviews:
Better understanding of preemie .......2007-05-05
This was a great book to read while my daughter was in the hospital. It had a good flow and helpful information. The only part that I didn't like was the section on breastfeeding. The author seemed to have a bad experience with her preemie and breastfeeding and her discouragement really came out in this section. I guess it was good though because it motivated me to touch base with a lactation consultant so that I would not share in her breastfeeding disappointment. Overall this book did help me to better understand my new and unexpected life with my preemie.
Great book for preemie parents!.......2005-03-22
We bought this when our son was born 10 weeks early. This book is very well written and easy to understand. It takes you through the early NICU days all the way to school age. This book was very helpful to us during the NICU time because when it first happened we were clueless (and we sometimes found it hard to get answers from doctors). It gives you information so that you know what questions to ask your baby's doctor. This book explained pretty much anything preemie related.
Highly recommended for any preemie parent!
The Best Guide through preemie parenthood.......2002-01-29
I am both a physician and a mother of a son who arrived 11 weeks early. This book has helped in every facet of my premature parenthood from breastfeeding (or, in my case, my ongoing attempts) to just feeling I was not the only preemie parent out there. In addition, the explanations of the various medical problems premature babies may face are excellent. Truly, a book that every premature parent would benefit from having.
How to Keep Your Sanity During an Especially Tough Situation.......2001-07-28
Our son was born at 26 weeks (3 months early) and was in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) until one day past his due date. We were given this book after he'd been there one month. Let me tell you what a life-saver it was! We had been given a "crash course" in the care delivered to a premature infant... very scary stuff. Wires, machines, noise, drugs -- and in the middle of it all this unbelievably tiny human being who is your child. This book took much of the fear away and instead educated us. Preemies don't stop being preemies when they come home! This book gives the technical data in an easy to understand format that is not condescending and also focuses on the emotional as well as physical needs of the baby. Additionally, it gives contacts and information on potential problems, how to spot them early, and how to handle them. There is also a good referal list in the back. I would recommend this book not only to preemie parents, but to anyone in contact with a preemie and their family. PS. As of this writing, our son is one year old and doing great!
Better books out there.......2001-07-18
I haven't used this book much at all. Books by Joseph Garcia-Prats and Dana Wechsler Linden were much more helpful.

Customer Reviews:
One sentence in the book bothers me.......2007-09-10
So, I was happily reading this book and kept telling my husband about how much I like this book & that it ranks # 2 as far as baby books go (Baby 411 is the absolute BEST one) & I have read ALOT of baby books. Anyway I get to this sentence that really makes me mad - it is better to smoke & breastfeed than to not breastfeed at all - I tried to breastfeed my son for 3 months and we just could not do it. He was born with low blood sugar thanks to my diabetes & was given a bottle as soon as he was born. On top of that he had severe jaundice that required us to supplement and he preferred the bottle over having to work for milk. I never felt a let down of milk, I pumped every 30 mins. for 2 weeks straight & all I produced all day long was 2 oz! After going to 3 different lactaction consultants (not to mention the several nurses while in the hospital) none of which could help my baby latch on properly I finally gave up when he was 3 months old. I now have a BOTTLEFEED baby who is 7 months old & is already learning to walk, according to his Dr. he is way ahead of his peers developemently. I babysit a exclusivly BREASTFEED baby who just last week has learned to turn over (my son was turning over both ways at 3 1/2 months old) & has gotten sick double the amount of times that my son has. I feel bad enough about bottlefeeding without hearing sentences like that, I smoked for 11 years and quit a year before getting pregnant because I didn't want to expose my child to that let alone breastfeed a baby while smoking. I don't think that statement makes bottlefeeding mothers feel very good about their decision, we already get enough grief from everybody else and don't need books to make us feel more guilty. And besides second hand smoke can contribute to lung cancer, bottlefeeding can't. If you ignore that one sentence in the book then it's a wonderful book.
Good resource.......2007-03-12
You can never have too much information since a newborn doesn't come with an instruction manual.
Comforting and Funny!!!.......2006-04-05
Bored with all those "stage" in life books for your baby to be? Perhaps you are (as I am) soon to be expecting and realize that you won't have a lot of time to read up about what your baby may/may not be up to and if it is normal after your baby arrives. Well then this book is for you!
I eagerly started the book on Friday and finished it (yes all 500 pages) on Saturday. What a delight. The author uses plenty of references from real life Moms and Dads which add wonderful insite and humor. Be warned though, if you are looking for the "What to expect book" format this is not for you. This is a realistic, warm, and funny look at life that tackles hard to discuss topics in a safe and humorous way.
If you are tired of the same old at this age your child will _____ books then definately pick this up. Its like talking to an old friend that you haven't met yet who has been there and knows the struggles and confusion that comes with having a baby.
Great book for new mother.......2005-07-28
I purchased this book for a young friend of mine who was about to have a baby and had lots of questions about not only the baby, but about what her body was going through. She loves it and refers to it constantly.
A top-notch guide to baby (and mom's) first year.......2004-10-15
This book provides an exceptionally thorough look at baby's first year from both the mother and baby's perspective. First-time mothers often express frustration about how ill-prepared they felt for the early weeks and months of motherhood. This book does an excellent job of giving mothers-to-be a realistic idea of what life after baby will really be like, for better and for worse. It's a truly one-of-a-kind and top-notch reference.

this journal is really cool. i loved the pregnancy journal, i used that as soon as we knew we were pregnant and i loved the format! so when i heard there was a baby one, i was excited to get it! it is a great place to take notes on your baby as he grows. a 'normal' journal just doesnt work when you are a new mother! so this is a really great item!
Great Journal.......2007-01-19
This Journal is the best I found! I've used the exact same one for all 3 of my kids! What I love about it is it's not a daily journal, yet not a weekly journal. You put your entries in every 4-7 days! And there's great reading in between to keep up on the social, emotional and physical developments of your baby week by week! I never felt "overwhelmed" trying to fill these journals out. The space to write varies in length from 1/4 of a page to 1/2 a page which also helps reduce the stress of having to write a FULL PAGE everytime!
Good for 1st time moms for 1st few weeks.......2007-01-11
This is a nice book for a first time mom in those very early weeks when she is probably very nervous and unsure and might want a neutral source to refer to instead of listening to all the advice of well-meaning friends & family. After the first few months I rarely looked at it aqain though.
Love it.......2006-11-07
I love this series. It's light reading, but has enough information. As a new mom, you don't always have the time to read a book this size, but its broken up into day to day reads, so you can either read one day per day or on week at a time. I got this as gifts for all my friends.
Wishing I had not bought this book.......2006-10-04
I bought both this book and the toddler book to write my childs memories down. I started using it for both my kids and realized that there was very little space to write things down when I needed to. I ended up writing over the text which I just stopped reading because it was not helpful at all and unorganized and was covered much better in other developmental books. To add to the frustration, there are cutesy quotes on EVERY page, and when there was a break in the develpmental jargon, they filled the space up with huge pointless graphics that they did not have the courtesy to make light enough to write over! Why call this a journal at all? I am cutting out the pages I did write in and starting over with another Journal. Dont waste your money.

Customer Reviews:
Great book--until the baby comes.......2007-08-07
I also bought this book while I was pregnant. While the information on when to call the doctor, how to diaper, bathe, feed, etc., was useful, once my baby was born, I found some of the advice unrealistic. The advice on "sleep training," for instance, struck me as inhumane. Also, the emphasis on milestones can cause one to forget to enjoy their child as they are. After my daughter was born, I hardly used it at all.
Very informative.......2006-06-02
Believe it or not, but I bought this book from amazon even before I got pregnant for 1st time. I wanted to know what to expect before I become a mother. The book is very well structured, informative and covers everything. It would be easy to find anything you need in an emergency. After reading it I've got a good feeling that I can handle everything about babies as far as books like this exist and can be at hand. Thank you, authors.
So informative..........2005-08-25
As an expectant mother, I had exhausted all the info on pregnancy and wanted to learn as much as I could - while I still had some free time - on what to expect during our baby's first year. This book proved to be an invaluable resource on everything from breastfeeding to bathing to baby poop and beyond! I know I will refer to it often after our baby arrives, and I recommend it highly for expectant and new parents alike.

A Must for all women!.......2006-05-12
As a future midwife and current nursing student, my biggest fear for women today is the lack of education on their rights in regards to their own healthcare. Many women do not question the medications or therapies their doctors suggest, and unfortunately many health professionals are prone to the "quick fix." This leaves many women disappointed in side effects or unaware of potential damage occurring within their bodies. This book is a must for all women seeking true answers to their health options as well as options for their children. It is enlightening and informative, and it does not discount traditional medicine all together. It simply encourages women to take an active role in their healthcare and know that they have rights and choices during a very important time in their lives. Thank you, Miranda Castro for an educational, comprehensive, and non-biased reference!
Must Have Book for Pregnancy and Motherhood.......2005-03-27
Not only does this book give you very specific information on using homeopathic remedies, it focuses on emotional as well as physical symptoms (which is essential to homeopathy). The sections on labor and post-partum are some of the most informative I've read in my pregnancy. Detailed, honest, and non-judgmental, the book covers the myriad and often complicated emotions mothers may encounter during pregnancy and labor, and offers ways to deal with these issues naturally (often with simple practices like taking a bath). This book covers, in detail, several birth complications, and ways the mother can deal with these during labor. This is all done with very easy to read and matter of fact language. No foofy new-age stuff here. I wish every pregnant woman in the world could have the information contained in this book. If you are considering it, BUY IT NOW!
Wonderful!.......2003-12-19
I started using this book when I was 8 months Pregnant and have used it ever since. I find that I turn to it at least once a week to find a remedy for my family and friends. This is a great book!

Customer Reviews:
For New parents of a Premature baby.......2007-06-19
I got this book after a week that my twins were born at 28 weeks of GA.
Found it very helpful to understand and very precise when you are overwhelmed with this emotional roller coaster and when you are trying to understand the terms of all the conditions that you babies are dealing with.
IF you are at a more advance stage, where your kids are about to go home OR have been already in the NICU for a while, then, you may know already everything that is explained in this book, therefore, you should look for something else that will teach you how to deal with situations you may come across after your babies go Home
preemie baby.......2007-05-13
This book was comprehensive and broke down the information into a simple format. It included many great pictures for references.
Excellent resource for the new preemie parent.......2005-02-13
This book is an excellent resource for a new parent of a preemie. Its primary focus is on parenting your baby in the NICU, and its filled with advice on how to handle your baby, ways to provide comfort and more protection and assistance in interacting with professionals in the NICU. Overall it is a comforting book which introduces you to the astonishing world of neonatal intensive care.
The title is really a bit of a misnomer, as what the book does best is provide information for the new parent, especially one whose baby is doing relatively well and is not extremely premature. For someone whose situation is more fragile, I would recommend this be supplemented by one of the more extensive books in our recommendations on prematurity.org. However, there is a broad audience for this book, as most preemies will do well in the NICU and after; for those parents this is a gentle and supportive introduction.
Your Premature Baby; The First Five Years.......2005-01-20
I'm eleven and I want to be a NICU nurse and I think it gives a lot of information. It has many pictures that help explain it. This book is great!
More like The First Three Months ..........2004-01-29
This book has lots of information about the hospital stay and I would recommend only to parents whose baby has just been born. My baby has been home for several months, and because the title said "The First Five Years" I was very disappointed. There was very little of relevance to me now or for the future.

Help...At Last.......2004-07-01
A friend of my husbands gave me this book a few weeks after my preemie was born. I wish this book had been given to me the minute I hit the NICU door.
Extremely informative and comforting, especially for a new parent unexpectedly thrown into the NICU community. I found it very easy to ready. It helped to extinguish most of my feelings of inadequacy and made me realize that what my child and I were experiencing was VERY NORMAL for our situation. The Appendix of Medical Terms assisted me in becoming more actively involved in the care of my preemie.
I wish an updated edition was available as some of the drugs being used and the medical treatments and terms are a little outdated.
