5 out of 5 stars Laughter.......2007-10-08

I laughed out loud reading this book, and I could relate to some of the dynamics having worked in a church kitchen. Even a Yankee can enjoy this concoction of recipes and humor. It reminded me of my charming friend in Louisiana whose southern conversation flows from her mouth like cream. This book makes a great gift for ladies!

5 out of 5 stars A True Gem for Those of Us Who Live It !.......2007-09-06

Gayden's book is beyond a cookbook---it brings to mind that culture that we lived and actually are still living in the South. A Yankee friend said she just "couldn't relate" to the book. Poor thing. I guess it just takes a Southern lady of a "certain age" to fully appreciate the authenticity of Gayden Metcalfe's descriptions of our funeral protocol!

Even when reading it all alone, I laughed right out loud on nearly every page at not only Gayden's wit, but her ability to let us see the funny side (and caring side) of our funerals and the food solace we provide before and after. It captures those customs perfectly. And, just as she said, I keep the ingredients of a casserole in my pantry at all times, just in case of a neighbor's sudden death, and my funeral suit hangs in the closet and my pearls at the top of my jewelry chest, at the ready.

I always sent my sons to church in suits and ties anyway, but I did this partly so they too would be ready for a funeral at the drop of a hat. More than once, we'd have to outfit a cousin because his mother didn't understand this, bless her heart.

Gayden's recipes are grand, really dressed up versions of our "funeral food." No Cheese Wiz is included, thank goodness.

I particulary laughed at this truth: After the cemetery part of the funeral, in the car on the way to the family home for the funeral meal, we can speak ill of the dead one quite vigorously. But once we get in the driveway of the bereaved, we straighten up and speak only of the great loss to the community his death has caused, even though he had been a rip-roaring scoundrel.

And even in the privacy of our car, understand that each criticism of the dead one had been prefaced with "Bless his heart. . ."

A Southern lady can give the most scathing statement as long as she begins with "Bless her heart. . ." An example, "Bless her heart, she's ugly as homemade soap and her children are such a disappointment. They all take after her grand-daddy on her mother's side, and bless his heart, I wouldn't pour ice tea on that rascal if he was on fire." Of course, we wouldn't do that at the family home after the funeral, only in the car on the way to it.

And we could get away with saying that to her third cousin once removed over the bridge table, but we wouldn't say it to her face. But we could say to her: "Bless your heart, that husband of yours has caused you such grief, with his runnin' around and all. I just wish you'd married Joe Bob, who made a dentist. I know your daddy wanted you to, but, Lord knows, you did the best you could at the time, you bein' pregnant and all."

3 out of 5 stars If you like cookbooks..........2007-08-13

Started off funny and was loving it..then it became pretty mundane and nothing but recipes. Some look pretty good and worth a try. But I don't think this one is as funny as it could have been with less recipes and more funny stories.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious Book for Any Southern Belle!.......2007-07-27

I couldn't stop reading Metcalf's humorous and accurate descriptions of southern traditions... As soon as I finished my copy I purchased copies for all my fellow "belles" to read and all have been delighted with the hysterical accounts of southern funeral protocal as well as the delicious recipes! Also check out Metcalf's wedding version "If Lilli Beth Don't Catch That Bouquet Somebody's Gonna Die"- equally as funny and a great gift for any mother-of-the-bride!

5 out of 5 stars Girls raised in the south.......2007-07-20

I laughed and laughed with this book. One of the few books I have read several times. Read it out loud with a group of my friends and they were belly laughing. People from other parts of the country may not understand all the regional descriptions. But a must for girls raised in the south.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

33 of the world's best business minds tackle one urgent question: What does it really take to make your organization remarkable?

Most organizations are stuck in a rut. On one hand, they understand all the good things that will come with growth. On the other, theyÂ're petrified that growth means change, and change means risk, and risk means death. Nobody wants to screw up and ruin a good thing, so most companies (and individuals) just keep trying to be perfect at the things theyÂ've always done.

In 2003, Seth GodinÂ's Purple Cow challenged organizations to become remarkable—to drive growth by standing out in a world full of brown cows. It struck a huge chord and stayed on the Business-Week bestseller list for nearly two years. You can hear countless brainstorming meetings where people refer to purple cows and say things like, “ThatÂ's not good enough. We need to create a big moo!”

But how do you create a big moo—an insight so astounding that people canÂ't help but remark on it, like digital TV recording (TiVo) or overnight shipping (FedEx), or the worldÂ's best vacuum cleaner (Dyson)? Godin worked with thirty-two of the worldÂ's smartest thinkers to answer this critical question. And the team—with the likes of Tom Peters, Malcolm Gladwell, Guy Kawasaki, Mark Cuban, Robyn Waters, Dave Balter, Red Maxwell, and Randall Rothenberg on board— created an incredibly useful book thatÂ's fun to read and perfect for groups to share, discuss, and apply.

The Big Moo is a simple book in the tradition of Fish and DonÂ't Sweat the Small Stuff. Instead of lecturing you, it tells stories that stick to your ribs and light your fire. It will help you to create a culture that consistently delivers remarkable innovations.

This book is a collection of random very short chapters by various authors. Essentially they will tell you the sun rises every day, if it rains you'll get wet and so forth... it's amazing that still nowadays the press gets mad over such things. It's time to scream "The King Is Naked"!

5 out of 5 stars One in many that offer something else for your growth.......2007-07-12

The book i purchased gave me new visions how to do better what I want.

5 out of 5 stars A Quick & Fun Read on Becoming Remarkable.......2007-03-19

Seth Godin decided to do something remarkable.

He thought, "Why not publish a book written by 33 people that doesn't make a dime of profit?"

Why not?

The result is The Big Moo, an anthology of 72 short, pithy essays covering everything from a list comparing big companies vs. startups, to a lesson on leadership learned in a redwood forest, to what a Colorado roofer did right, to what a local print shop did wrong.

The chapters bounce around all those topics and more, but all relate to the core idea of being remarkable. Godin defines remarkable, in business or personal life, as doing something not good, and not perfect, but that stands out, that causes people to start talking, "remarking" about it. In other words, not only do you have to stand out (as he wrote about in a previous book The Purple Cow), but you have to do something really out of the ordinary, remarkable, a.k.a. "The Big Moo." He says that the real challenge before us is to do something truly remarkable with our work and our lives. The Big Moo doesn't pretend to be a step by step guide to guaranteed remarkability, but instead is a freewheeling brainstorming session to whet your appetite and spark your creativity toward creating your own remarkable life.

The book itself is the prime example of doing the remarkable. The editor, Seth Godin, approached 32 people, some famous like Tom Peters and Guy Kawasaki, and others famous only to the people they have impacted. He asked them to contribute material to the book for free, with the agreement that all the book's profits go to charity. On top of that, all the material is anonymous, so that you're not sure who wrote which chapter. Remarkable.

How I received the book is an example of the ripple effect of remarkability that Godin is aiming for. My copy came from Glen Tullman, the CEO of Allscripts. When his company read the book, they asked the question, "What can we do remarkable?" The result of asking that question is a new collaborative initiative that Allscripts has launched that will provide the ability for every physician in America to use electronic prescription prescribing completely FREE, which is absolutely unheard of. Now that's remarkable.

The Big Moo is a quick and fun read, sure to give you some good food for thought for your own remarkable life.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Compilation of Essays .......2007-02-01

I purchased this book prior to reading Purple Cow which wasn't a mistake per se, but I read a few pages of this then decided to purchase and read Purple Cow before ultimately tackling the Big Moo.

Most of Seth Godin's work centers around a premise to get the reader to really think then eventually act on that thinking. This title is no different--it's a collection of essays compiled by some of the best marketing and business minds around in an attempt to get you to think about your current (or possibly a past) situation and what changes you may wish to make to become remarkable instead of ordinary.

It's a quick read which delivers on its objective to generate actionable thought. It's also fun to try to figure out which author wrote each essay as he/she isn't identified for each.

Highly recommended as a sequel to Purple Cow.

3 out of 5 stars Good follow up to Purple Cow.......2006-10-31

If you like case studies, and you liked "Purple Cow," this book should definitely be on your list. Make sure your read "Purple Cow" first though.

Book Description

For many of us, perfectionism can bring life's most desired rewards. But when the obsessive need for perfection and control gets in the way of our professional and emotional lives, the cost becomes too high. Although many of us appear cool and confident on the outside, inside we are in emotional turmoil, trying to satisfy everyone, attempting to direct the future, and feeling that we are failing.
In TOO PERFECT, Dr. Allan Mallinger draws on twenty years of research and observations from his private practice to show how perfectionism can sap energy, complicate even the simplest decisions, and take the enjoyment out of life. For workaholics or neat freaks, for anyone who fears change or making mistakes, needs rigid rules, is excessively frugal or obstinate, TOO PERFECT offers revealing self-tests, fascinating case histories, and practical strategies to help us overcome obsessiveness and reclaim our right to happiness.

5 out of 5 stars Life Changing.......2006-09-13

Normally I would not be writing a review for an item. I always thought it was because I was lazy, or that I didn't care. After reading this book, I have come to realize that it was in large part because subconsciously, I could not meet my own perfectionist expectations. There are a lot of low-risk undertakings in life that I have not attempted for the same reason.
This book, for me, has brought to my conscious awareness all of the subconscious obsessive thoughts that were creating immense frustration and anxiety in my life. Of course, I realize that changing perfectionistic thoughts is not a quick fix. It takes time and effort, in both cognitive and behavioral aspects.
Of all the books I've read on CBT, NLP, perfectionism and the like, this book has meant the most to me personally than any other book I have ever read.
If you have perfectionistic tendencies, in ANY area of your life, then I hope this book will bring you waves of insight and comfort, like it did me.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book.......2006-03-10

I had trouble finding a good book about obsessive compulsive personality type (most were about obssessive compulsive disorder) until I found this one. It was so fascinating that I flew through it in one night! I had many "ah-ha" moments while reading the book, and recognized certain traits in my spouse, my mother, and myself. I found the book to be well written, easy to read and understand, and amazingly informative. It had many positive things to say to balance the negative and included constructive suggestions for changing behavior patterns. I highly recommend reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2005-04-19

I tend to be rather obsessive and perfecitionist about many things, and have often suffered from this (though I'm not a typical obsessive-compulsive). This book has given me great insights into my own destructive ways of thinking and behaving. It was a lot of fun to read and very encouraging and comforting. Insight is one thing of course, changing your behavior (for which the book gives several tipps) is another. But this book is a great start.

5 out of 5 stars Best book yet.......2004-07-03

I think I have now read all of the book on perfectionism and OCPD. This was the best yet as it was the first time that they were not just focusing on perfectionism but being obsessive. It was the only one that mentioned Obsessive Compulsive Personallity Disorder instead of perfectionism. Perfectionism is one form of OCPD and this book covers it all with great recommendations on how to get over each form of it. Book Description

A few times in your life, someone will tell you something so right, so deeply true that it changes you forever. That is what Anna Quindlen, author of the timeless bestseller A Short Guide to a Happy Life, does here.

In Being Perfect, she shares wisdom that, perhaps without knowing it, you have longed to hear: about “the perfection trap,” the price you pay when you become ensnared in it, and the key to setting yourself free. Quindlen believes that when your success looks good to the world but doesn’t feel good in your heart, it isn’t success at all.

She asks you to set aside your friends’ advice, what your family and co-workers demand, and what society expects, and look at the choices you make every day. When you ask yourself why you are making them, Quindlen encourages you to give this answer: For me. “Because they are what I want, or wish for. Because they reflect who and what I am. . . . That way lies dancing to the melodies spun out by your own heart.”

At the core of this beautiful book lies the secret of authentic success, the inspiration to embrace your own uniqueness and live the life that is undeniably your own, rich in fulfillment and meaning.

5 out of 5 stars Small, Savvy and Sage.......2007-07-17

One can finish Anna Quindlen's book in less than 2 hours. It's written in such a way where its like recounting an episode in ones life that where immersed in perfection. Although the book could be apocryphal, its points of wisdom is definitely worthy of aprobation. I think her most important message is well-imparted in Being Perfect's last few sentences. "I don't want anyone I know to take that terrible chance. And the only way to avoid it is to listen to that small voice inside you that tells you to make mischief, to have fun, to be contretarian, to go another way. George Eliot wrote, 'It is never too late to be what you might have been.' It's never to early either. Take it from someone who has left the backpack full of bricks far behind, and everyday feels light as a feather." I guess I read her book just in time for me to start dumping my own bricks.

2 out of 5 stars It's hard to be perfect.......2006-07-09

The layout of this book is 'perfect.' This small hardbound volume is that of a childs pocket book but manufacturered with the refinements of a valued classic newly put into print. The fonts are serious and straight in character... a little on the large size. The pictures are realistic in form. The appearance on the shelf is superfically excellent.

Promoters hype and judging the book by its cover can only result in disappointment. Had less attention been paid this volume I would use only slightly milder metaphors. The read is less than inspiring to other than a new adolesent female reader with less than spiritually nuturing parents. The content is unsophisticated and superficial about its topic and may tend to support the confussion it is addressing. This book is heavily promoted on the Authors name recognition as can be noted by the books cover.

The read is very short and simple. I felt obliged to finish the volume in order to say that I had completed the task, but was less than inspired by the lecture to turn the page. This is a very attractive one time read: a beautiful date that would have done better to never have started a conversation.

For all the professional production and publicized hype, this book is prefereable to teen romances but less incitful and less inspiring than the venerable Dr. Sues.

4 out of 5 stars Small and Powerful.......2006-01-31

This small book deals with a key subject -- self acceptance -- in a mighty, insightful way. I loved it.

3 out of 5 stars A great book to pass along to a friend..........2005-10-22

I enjoy Anna Quindlen's articles/columns and found her book Blessings to be a pleasant story. That said, I was quick to pick up this book, Being Perfect, while browsing through a bookstore at the airport. It is a short book - I was able to read the book cover-to-cover while standing alongside my carry-on bag in the bookstore (less than 15 minutes).

Still, I enjoyed the presentation. Anna's writing style speaks to me very eloquently. Her message was poignant and I'm sure would tear right at some heart strings for those individuals(particulary women) who have spent a better part of their lifetime trying to be the perfect 'parent' or 'spouse' or simply live up to society's impossible ideals. But for me, it was simply an interesting read that left me without any lingering thoughts.

While the black & white photographs were endearing, I couldn't quite see the full relevancy other than that they were from the era when Anna was a teenager perhaps. However, those photos seemed to occupy atleast 1/3 of the printed pages (which were few to begin with).

I would strongly recommend that you borrow this book from the library before investing $12.95 and having it sit idly on your shelf. I don't think its a book to be read and re-read, but perhaps a book that you would happily offer to a friend to take home and read and pass along to another friend.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Message.......2005-09-12

I love the author's eloquence. Understandable - yet chock full of meaning in her wording. The meaning of the book is very very important on a spiritual level. So many people have desires that they won't let come to fruition because of family's, friend's or society's expectations - yet those desires are precisely what will bring happiness & a sense of fullfillment to each of us.
For example in my life - I'm contemplating stopping at only one child. The usual rule of thumb is that this is a no-no if at all controllable. But maybe for myself & my spouse - this is just right for us.
Another example is that despite all the money I've spent on education - I still want to pursue more. My family's traditions are that I should be home - in the house - taking care of my little one with the expectation that more will be on the way. It's not what I want - & it's soooo hard to let myself do & be anything other than a stay-at-home Mom. I'm not going to get any encouragement to be or do otherwise from my particular environment - so I love this message.
I know - this is NOT the 1950's. But that expectation for women still exists!!!! Maybe not as strong - but it still exists! People speak very badly about women who put their kids in daycare to pursue a career "they don't need".
Enough about me - this message to listen to that voice inside can pertain to all situations. Hopefully this message will be even more prevalent in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Get Your Mind In Touch With Your Body.......2006-12-14

Chopra offers many profound insights here about the body's relation to the mind. He identifies the three main personality groups and the reader is instructed to choose which one best describes him/her. From there, he tells what kind of food, music, activities, etc the person may be drawn to. Most of these are accurate observations and, while everyone may not agree with all of his suggestions, there are many things here you can do to reach your optimum health and potential.

Among my favorite parts are:
1) The kinds of foods that satisfy cravings. The different personalities require different things to satisfy their hunger cravings. Some may require bitter foods while others need sweet foods or pickles. This can help cut back on overeating and help you lose weight.

2) Wait five minutes after you eat before you go back for more. This helps the food settle and also cuts back on overeating.

3) Dealing with emotions. Anger and rage can effect your health. He gives exercises in which you can identify the feelings and make them go away.

There are several more subjects he covers. Some are a little out there. For instance, he suggests food has a better effect on the body if you eat in complete silence and think about nothing but you eat while you are doing so. Good luck with that if you eat in restaurants or with friends or family... Overall, he makes many good points. Some things I knew all along but never put conscious thought to, which proves his point that the body and the mind are connected and the body thinks and feels just as much as the mind. He also narrates the audiobook himself. I don't usually read self help books, but this one was worth the time and money. I'll definitely read more of his work.

    Book Description

"That being than which a greater cannot be conceived." Katherin A. Rogers defends this traditional approach to the living God of biblical tradition as described by the great Medieval philosophers such as Augustine, Anselm, and Aquinas. She covers key areas of contemporary contention with Medieval philosophical notions of God and includes major thinkers from all sides of the debate, but ultimately concludes that the most adequate account of the nature of God should build upon the foundation laid by the Medieval philosophers.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Need help reconciling omniscience and free will?.......2006-11-30

Dr. Rogers text is a pleasureable philosophical read (in a fallen where philosophical texts are usually rather painful to read, as opposed to heaven where they'll most certainly be a joy!).

She does a very good job of presenting the classical western opinion (or opinions, in some cases), on many different matters, and is certainly open to criticism on all angles, though selecting the one she believes best solves the problems at hand.

Occasionally Rogers seems to get fuzzy on Aquinas' theology, or assume that He and Anselm are on the same page when it's pretty evident that they're not, but it's a minor fault that doesn't detract from the actual philosophy at hand - though it may cause some confusion on what Aquinas did and didn't teach.

Overall, however, a good read well worth the time and money. Impress your friends at your next party by buying this book. :p

    Book Description

At the heart of this beautiful and insightful audiobook lies "the perfection trap"--what it is, how to avoid falling into it, and how to instead shape a life that is uniquely yours. In BEING PERFECT, Ann Quindlen gives a name to, and invites us to laugh at, a lifestyle that is all too familiar to many people, one that emphasizes the pursuit of trying to be perfect in the eyes of others, and to win the world's good opinion, rather than focusing on the most important goal of all: "Giving up on being perfect and beginning the work of becoming yourself." With wit and wisdom, Quindlen offers a keen understanding of how to create a life that is rich in meaning for you, by living on your own terms and by listening to your own deepest instincts, rather than to the demands and values of the world outside. This audiobook is an inspiring guide to living a rewarding and happy life, a life fulfilling in all its flaws, a life that is truly yours.

In A SHORT GUIDE TO A HAPPY LIFE, Quindlen reflects on what it takes to "get a life"--to live deeply every day and form your own unique self, rather than merely to exist through your days. "Knowledge of our own mortality is the greatest gift God ever gives us," Quindlen states, "because unless you know the clock is ticking, it is so easy to waste our days, our lives." Her mother died when Quindlen was nineteen: "It was the dividing line between seeing the world in black and white, and in Technicolor. The lights came on for the darkest possible reason I learned something about enduring, in a very short period of time, about life. And that was that it was glorious, and that you had no business taking it for granted." In A SHORT GUIDE TO A HAPPY LIFE, Quindlen guides us with an understanding that comes from knowing how to see the view, the richness in living.

5 out of 5 stars Commencement addresses you actually will want to hear!.......2006-01-28

Commencement addresses are not ordinarily something I look
forward to hearing . . . yet when given the opportunity to listen to
two of them, I grabbed the opportunity by obtaining BEING PERFECT
AND A SHORT GUIDE TO A HAPPY LIFE--a short but powerful
CD read and written by Anna Quindlen.

Quindlen, the prolific author of novels, nonfiction books and
children's books, is also a 1992 Pulitzer Prize recipient for
her NEW YORK TIMES column . . . her column now
appears every other week in NEWSWEEK.

She took the aforementioned title from two commencement
addresses she had prepared . . . when she kept getting
requests for them, she put them into book form: A SHORT GUIDE
TO A HAPPY LIFE, followed by BEING PERFECT.

Both titles contain such useful advice that I found myself
    listening to them repeatedly.

For example, she urges you to set aside your friends' advice,
what your family and co-workers demand, and what society
expects, and look at the choices you make every day. When
you ask yourself why you are making them, Quindlen encourages
you to give this answer: For me. "Because they are what
I want, or wish for. Because they reflect who and what I am . . .
[the] melodies spun out by your own heart."

Or when it comes to being a mother, a wife and a friend,
she notes, "I show up. I listen. I try to laugh."

My only regret is that Quindlen was not the speaker at my high school
    or college graduations.
