Book Description
A comically expressive tot pays tribute to the all-important Binky in a bright, playful board book sure to have instant toddler appeal.
Anyone who's spent time with a toddler knows that few crises compare with the (even temporary) loss of a favorite binky. Here, in her humorous, bold graphic style, Leslie Patricelli plays up a scenario near and dear to every toddler's heart, raising the plaintive question: can there be any peace in the house when a beloved binky is not to be found?
Customer Reviews:
My 2 Year Old Loves This Book.......2007-08-15
She didn't like the book when I first read it to her. But after a few times, she started to love it. She now answers every question and asks to read it again and again at bed time. Sometimes She'll get up to look for her binky.
Really worth it.......2007-07-02
When it comes to toddler books, we sort of let them come into the house on their own, from whereever they come from, presents or random offerings. This is the one book we actually sought out and even ordered from Amazon, all special and all, and yeah, all list price even. It's worth it. Mallory goes back to it again and again. Leslie got it just right.
BUY OR DIE! SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-06
Stick to the sky to win ofVenus flytraps should be kept in pots on a patio, deck or position in the garden that receives at least 6-8 hours of sunlight per day.[6] In areas of lower humidity, it is best to place plants in very wide water trays in an attempt to increase humidity levels. Better still, grow Venus flytraps in a greenhouse which often leads to healthy, vigorous and colourful plants. The colour of the trap leaves may be used as an indicator of sufficient light. In appropriate conditions the inside of each trap should be bright red in color for most varieties. In insufficient light the inside of the traps turn light green. Low light also causes etiolation and makes plants more susceptible to diseases.
Venus flytraps are best grown in mixtures of sphagnum peat moss and/or peat often with the addition of sand, perlite or other inert salt free material. Soil pH should be in the range of 3.9 to 4.8.
The 'Dentate' cultivar of the venus fly trap in cultivationVenus Flytraps ideally should not be watered with tap water as accumulated salts in tap water may kill carnivorous plants. Soft water with TDS of 100 ppm or less yields good growth, both distilled water or clean rain water are ideal. The soil should be kept constantly moist by placing the pot in a tray full of water, with the root bulb of the plant allowed to be above the level of the water at least part of the time, to prevent root rot in stagnant water. There is no danger of over-watering. Venus flytraps can survive short periods of immersion underwater.[6]
Some horticulturists have experimented with giving small amounts of fertiliser to Venus flytraps, usually applying diluted solutions of products formulated for epiphytes, using cotton swabs, to the plant's foliage. Another method of fertiliser application is a spray bottle or pump. Beginners, however, and those without expendable plants, would be wise to avoid fertiliser in favor of insects.
Healthy venus flytraps produce flowers in the springThe temptation to trigger the traps manually should be resisted. Venus flytraps are entirely capable of catching their own food; thus, feeding them manually is not necessary. If for some reason a grower wishes to feed a flytrap, live insects no larger than 1/3 of the size of the trap may be used, as larger insects tend to have a detrimental effect on the plant as they often drastically shorten the individual trap's life and/or cause it to die. Algal growth near the plant is an indicator of overfeeding, as is an abundance of dead, black traps.
Healthy Venus flytraps will produce scapes of white flowers in spring, however, many growers remove the flowering stem early, as flowering consumes some of the plant's energy, and reduces the rate of trap production. If allowed to flower, successful pollination will result in the production of dozens of small, shiny black seeds.
Venus flytraps have a necessary winter dormancy period, triggered by nighttime temperatures below 10 °C (50 °F) and reduced day length.[6] In climates with mild winters they can be kept outside to overwinter (hardiness zone 9 or greater). The soil should be kept slightly moist and the area well ventilated to prevent the growth of grey mold. Those who live in areas with extremely cold winters (hardiness zone 8 or less) might consider placing plants in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for two to three months, starting in Autumn, although they can survive freeze-over for brief periods of time.[6]
Plants can be propagated by seed, although seedlings will take several years to mature. More commonly, they may be propagated by division in spring or summer.

Nora is a big girl now, but she still clings to her pacifier when she gets sleepy. One day it falls out of her pocket while sheÂ's playing outside. Ella Elephant doesnÂ't know what it is, but she thinks itÂ'll make a beautiful ring for her trunk. When she too loses it, Lotti Lamb finds it and thinks itÂ'll make a nice hair clip. One by one different animals find the binky and put it to different uses, only to lose it again. And just when Nora finally finds it, she realizes that maybe she doesnÂ't need it anymore. Customer Reviews:
good book...but will it do the trick?.......2007-05-14
I bought this and the Binky Ba-Ba Fairy book at the same time and my daughter prefers this one hands down. It is a great way to keep plugging the message of "get rid of that darned thing!" However, I'm not sure if she associates herself yet with giving up the binky, since the characters seem to 'lose it' instead of giving it up. Only at the end is there a choice to give it up voluntarily, so I think she might be missing the point.
Of course it is still a good book.
Excellent read.......2007-04-06
My daughter gave up her binky within a week of reading this book. It was a great buy.

Pacifiers, Blankets, Bottles, and Thumbs : What Every Parent Should Know About Starting and Stopping
ASIN: 1598582518 |
Book Description
This book was originally written to help my son give up his pacifiers and bottles. It can be a struggle for a child to give up these items that give them comfort. The Binky-BaBa Fairy makes children feel good about growing up and sharing their beloved items with the new babies who need them. HEATHER KNICKERBOCKER-SILVA is a married mother of one. She works as a Special Education Teacher and has authored two books. The title of her other book is THE CHRONICLES OF AN INEXPERIENCED MOMMY. At the time of print she was completing her Masters degree. She enjoys family time, writing, and learning by continuing her education.
Customer Reviews:
It worked after we read it the first time..........2007-06-28
My 2-year-old son gave up his pacifier after we read this book the first time. I thought it would take a few days at least before he got the idea of the fairy but as soon as I said "the end" he voluntarily put his pacifier in a box and left it outside his bedroom door. True, the drawings are are very simple but it got the point across. He was no longer using the bottle at this point and we never called his pacifier a binky so when I read the book I modify it a bit and not read the bottle part and use the word pacifier instead. I think the reason it worked well for my son is because he was only using his pacifier at night and he wasn't allowed to take it out of his bedroom. We still read this book everynight because it reminds him that is a big boy now!
It is okay.......2007-05-14
My daughter didn't take to the book, but she won't shun it either. The illustrations aren't wonderful; while they are cute and kid-like, children in my opinion like to see artwork that is better than what they can produce.
However, the story is very sweet and I like the fact that the husband and wife worked on this together as a team.
The Miracle of Books.......2007-03-06
This book is a Miracle! It worked like a charm. My 2 1/2 year old daughter refused to give up her pacifier. I thought she would be 8 and still have it. After reading it everynight for a few weeks she was excited for the Binky Baba fairy to come! I recommend this book to all parents! BUY IT NOW it works. I love it. I plan to buy the authors other book. I will also review that one.

Fresh Ideas for Out Dated Jewels.......2005-05-29
Flea Market Jewelry has some innovative ideas for turning those old costume jewelry parts into something you will actually wear and use. There's also an Artist's Gallery with unique contributions from other artists.
If you like buying bits and pieces or if you have inherited outdated costume jewelry and want some inspiring new ideas to try, this may be the book for you!
Making a wonderful something from nothing.......2004-09-29
Binky is a native Texan living in Austin where, as of the book's publication, owns a shop called "Flashbacks." The book "celebrates the marriage of 3 great passions -- jewelry, shopping and making something yourself." As a frequent visitor to the Randolph Air Force Base's thrift shop myself, I can attest to the therapy provided by finding a true treasure at a pittance.
The montage on page 14 is an appropriate introduction to how to combine unlikely objects to enhance a corner of your home. The montage incorporates a religious picture, jeweled ornaments, and a hanging candleholder which, in a former life, was a coffee urn lid. Binky provides tips on how to bargain at estate and garage sales, such as paying in cash or using inclement weather to find a desperate seller.
Binky has a super idea for using those one or two beads you have leftover from other projects -- wire them together for a beaded curtain. She suggests that you look around for inspiration. On a recent shopping trip, I saw some very expensive beaded and embellished pillows. With some exotic fabric scraps, beads, and old brooches gathered from a rummage sale, you could quickly and easily make a similar project without spending much money.
She includes a gallery of the work of others who use found objects. Jo Packham and Chapelle Designers make holiday ornaments. Mary Jo Hiney's work has a distinctly Victorian influence. If you are a pack-rat, collecting bottle caps or used gift-wrap, this book will give you inspiration for their use.

Customer Reviews:
More fun comix.......2007-09-24
Love this book! I love Matt Groening's Life In Hell series. So true, so funny!
A pint-sized edition of a great book.......2007-09-20
Binky's Guide to Love is another great Life in Hell collection. This edition, though, is printed in a smaller format than the other books. It's about 6 inches square, as opposed to the usual 11 inch square books. It's still a little larger than the size it's run in papers, but it can still induce eye strain.
But the content is all there, and just as funny as ever. So, four-star material, dinged a point for size.
Uplifting!.......1999-03-18
Who would have known such a strange looking rabbit charachter could be such a scholar when it comes to love! I was thouroughly impressed with Groening's portrayal of young single folk on the dating scene, and Akbar and Jeff can tell a lot about a lengthy relationship without involving gender roles. I might add that I also enjoy some of the appearances of Groening's sons, Will and Abe, for the realism they add to the humor.
Guaranteed therapy after a failed relationship........1998-12-03
I bought this book, and was really impressed by Binky's guide to 'love'. It is extremely amusing and insightful. Full of witty bitterness. It has a dig at dating, love and the whole relationship thing. I thought it was great. Recommended reading when your feeling really cynical and self pitying. I constantly flip through the first half of the book that relates to Binkys adventures in the dating game, but i don't really find the second half of the book, Jeff and Ackbar, as humourous. I guess the gay humour isn't as relative.
Binky's Less Bitter, and he'll show you how........1997-11-12
This indeed is a sort-of-sequel to "Love is Hell," and unlike "Love is Hell," this is substantially less bitter. Groening drew this after he met his "radiant" wife, and it definately shows. Less bitterness kind of spoils it a little, but there's still quite a few good laughs. Akbar and Jeff make a rather lengthy appearance here as well.

Catholic AND Suffering from OCD! Oy!.......2006-03-28
The best of this kind of autobiographical work is concurrently sad, funny, and truthful - the Binky Brown stories have all of that.
Hmm, Sparhawk doesn't see any of the impact of the rabid catholicism on Binky - just the OCD. She must come from Catholic - lite. 'Cause it's there.
He gets into how he handles his OCD as an adult, and mentions that his first wife had been catching on that something was wrong with him. How I would love to hear from him the rest of his story, when and how he felt when he was finally diagnosed, and what is going on in his head now. I have read that he wishes Binky Brown would go away, that it's embarrassing for him now. I hope he doesn't feel that way much longer.
Worth your expenditure - get it.
Interesting Account of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.......2004-10-27
I like Justin Green's stuff. "Binky Brown Makes Up His Own Puberty Rites" is an excellent example of adolescent anguish. Also, I grew up Catholic just like the author. So I eagerly read this book. A big disappointment. This is not a story of adolescent anguish, or Catholic guilt, or rebelling against moral authority, or anything else one can identify with. It is an account of the progress of a psyvhiatric disorder. If the author were Jewish, or Bible Christian, or communist in his upbringing, the symbolism used would have been different. But still, this is an inner, medical disturbance, not an artistic struggle. Not a search for religious identity. Not something I can identify with.
Excellent.......2004-05-24
Even if this wasn't my father's book I would still love it. I have Obsessive compulsive disorder as well. When I feel like I am the only crazy person in the world, I read Binky Brown and feel better about myself. A must for all nurotics.
Overlooked classic of the Undergrounds........2000-11-03
This is a great collection. 'Binky Brown Meets the Holy Virgin Mary' is a real masterpiece, a disturbing autobiographical story of neurosis and catholic guilt. Any fan of Robert Crumb or the Drawn & Quarterly crowd of autobio anti-heroes should appreciate this. Also contains many shorter pieces of excellent quality that first appeared in rags like Arcade, Raw, and Weirdo. Most people would ignore such intense and honest work, but why should you?

A perfect lazy day weekend book.......2001-06-21
It all started when I was persuing books in the airport bookstore when I came across the title, "Death Wore a Fabulous New Fragrance." I pulled it out and did a quick thumb-through when I heard my flight's boarding call. Having found nothing else that even came close to piquing my interest, I paid for the book and ran to catch my flight. For the next two hours, I was grinning, laughing, and having a grand time with two of the most imaginative characters in the most glamourous of situations to the point that *I* was jealous of them. Yeah, yeah, they're fictional characters but the panache they pull off when ordering Bombay Sapphire Gin Martinis....buy this book, make a pitcher of Bombay Sapphire Gin Martinis (or Long Island Iced Teas) and lose yourself in this book. I *dare* you to read between the lines on some of these characters! I know I did and it made it all that much more enjoyable!
This is a great sunny afternoon iced tea drinking book........1999-03-28
I really enjoyed this book for several reasons. First, I had read Mr. Outland's first mystery book and enjoyed it thouroughly. Second, it was fun trying to figure out who the famous people in the book he was talking about were (some I could, some I am STILL trying to figure out). Lastly, I really enjoy Mr. Outland's style of writing. It is very easy to read, and the dialogue is fun, and timely. Thanks, and I can't wait for the next in the series! Jenny
Outland has a style all his own we should be glad of it.......1998-04-25
Socially vacant people would take one look baby Binky van de Kamp and homosexual Doan McChandler and stereotype the pair as a drag queen and a fag. Anyone who gets to know them, quickly realizes that they are just two people who prefer to live the high life to the fullest, but do not have the cash to do so in an orthodox manner. The unusual ideas this pair uses to maintain their current lifestyle is ludicrous. Still they would go the extra mile for a friend in need (hopefully finding cash on the way).
Just a month ago, Doan and Binky risked their lives to successfully rescue a friend from a murder charge. This achievement leads them to open up their own detective agency. Their first client is an acquaintance of Doan, accused of murdering a closeted movie hunk. The duo goes to LA where they quickly find themselves surrounded by human piranhas willing to do anything for a buck.
Orland Outland has created a unique and refreshing new kind of mystery series that is pure fun. The mystery propels the story line forward, but it is the campy characters and their serio-comic scenes that give DEATH WORE A FABULOUS NEW FRAGRANCE its quirky charm (and odor). Though Binky and Doan are not a romantic couple, their constant zings and witty ripostes are priceless. This is the beginning of a warm friendship with a new series clearly on the cutting edge (and sometimes to the outside of that).

After waking one morning to find a new baby brother in a basket by his bed, toddler pig Benny is thrilled--for about 15 seconds. Long enough for the baby to start squalling and their mother to give him a binky. "I want a binky, too," says a disillusioned Benny. But apparently he's too big for a binky. Benny, whose MO is to hit the highway when things don't go his way (Benny's Had Enough), manages to exchange his Little Piggy doll for his brother's binky, and takes off for an afternoon of peace, quiet, and binky-sucking. Unfortunately, it's not only his mother who thinks he's too old for a binky.
Barbro Lindgren and Olof Landström (Boo and Baa in the Woods) make an unbeatable creative team. Benny's ingenuous expressions even as he misbehaves, and his pure joy when he finally gets his first taste of the coveted binky, are simply priceless, as is Lindgren's understated narrative: "He is happy. The binky is good." We will follow Lindgren and Landström to the ends of the earth for the chance to read any of their books. (Ages 2 to 6) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
An irresistible follow-up to Benny’s Had Enough!
One morning Benny awakens to find a bassinet standing next to him. Finally, Benny has a brother! All Benny’s new sibling does is scream and scream – until his mother gives him a binky. Benny wants a binky, too, but his mother says he’s too old for one. And Benny’s brother isn’t willing to share. Benny soon grows tired of his new brother – he’d rather have the binky. So when his mother isn’t looking, Benny runs away with the binky. He feels triumphant, until he meets up with some porcine bullies. Fortunately, he is rescued, and after running all the way home, Benny restores the binky to its rightful owner.
Olof Landström’s hilarious illustrations capture the frustrations and joys of having a new sibling.

Cute, but sends BAD messages.......2004-06-14
I am a writer, so I can really appreciate all the funny, superbly written sentences in this book. The illustrations are precious, too. But c'mon, do we really want to raise kids who think these things are funny: three bully pigs punching a smaller, more helpless piglet in the snout because they think he's a "baby"; an "adult" dog threatening to bite children if they don't behave; an spiteful older sibling who sticks his newborn brother outside in the cold while he steals his pacifier, or -- worse of all -- the mother pig who doesn't pay enough attention to know any of this is going on. Perhaps in this generation of violent computer games and television shows, this book is the lesser of two evils? I say don't waste your money on bad messages for this impressionable picture-book set, even if the pictures are darned cute.
This is too much!.......2003-04-04
This book just grows and grows on you. The text is simple enough for the youngest toddler, and the illustrations make it so funny that you will not mind the repeated requests for "read it again!" Every kid and adult can identify with the myriad kidlike emotions in this book. Get it.
Oh for crying out loud.......2003-03-29
Benny and the Binky is a very funny book written in a wonderfully simplistic way that I'm sure children would love. The illustrator is brilliant, and Benny's expressions are just priceless. You will laugh out loud at the "three tough pigs." For those of you who find it appalling that the three tough pigs want to punch Benny in the snout -- perhaps you should stick with gentler classics such as "Little Red Riding Hood." Benny and the Binky is just plain fun for kids and adults.

Benny and the Binky. By Barbro Lindgren. Illustrated by Olof Landstrom. R & S Books, 2002. 24 pages. [money](Preschool)
A binky may be the only thing that calms a screaming baby pig, but the excruciation of growing out of that binky is the ingenious subject of the irresistibly hilarious Benny and the Binky by Olof Landstrom (Benny's had enough, 9/99). Benny finally has the new baby brother he has been waiting for. But all Benny's new sibling does is scream - until he receives a binky from his mother. Now Benny wants one too, but he's told he's too old. This causes Benny to "steal" his brother's binky and hit the road, but he soon realizes why he's too old when several groups ridicule him during his adventures for being some "kind of oddball". The comedy of Benny's journey (with binky in mouth) comes through the cast of characters he meets along the way, including "three tough pigs with soccer shoes (on)." They are shown preparing to chase Benny, each in a three-point stance, in the masterfully done illustration that tells the story even better than the text itself. Each character's personality is colorfully brought to life as each page is turned. Unlike the classic picture books, Benny and the Binky uses modern-day concepts and ideas, such as a dog working on a laptop computer and listening to headphones, in a progressively entertaining way. As all of us have a favorite picture book from our childhood, I feel that many of today's preschool aged children will someday look back at this book with the same fond memories. At the same time I, as a 28-year-old man, had several entertaining laughs at the "corky" humor throughout this book and will enjoy reading it to my children.
My 2yr old loves this book........2002-08-31
My 2yr old loves this book. Her favorite thing to do is sit down and read books with me. This is a book that she has me read over and over. We have discussed the incident where the pigs hit Benny's snout and the dog says he's going to bite their knuckles off and she understands that it is wrong or as she likes to put it, "naughty". My daughter is very attached to her binky (nay nay) and adores this book and I myself find it very cute.

Great Chapter Book.......2004-02-01
Arthur wants to see his favorite band BINKY in concert, but because DW took so long deciding on which pair of shoes to buy, he gets the very last row in the auditorium. He day-dreams of being picked out of the audience by a reporter to meet the band. To his surprise his father is catering the event for the backstage crew and he gets to go backstage. Eventually Arthur asks his friends to join him after much indecision. Arthur is surprised again only to learn that BINKY the band is a computer generated holligram and not real people.
A Band Book.......2000-11-29
Arthur finds a song he likes a lot,so he tries to find what it's called, until he's in a concert. Its better than it sounds, but the book is a bit lucky,I didn't give it two stars.
