A mother tiger wants her baby to go to sleep, but the little tiger resists. "'If I close my eyes,' he said, 'I can't see the sky.'" She assures him that he will not only see the sky when he sleeps, but will float among clouds and be cradled by the moon. Not in the least assured, the little tiger complains that if he closes his eyes, he will miss seeing the tree and the bird with blue feathers. With each concern, his mother consoles him with a comforting thought. If this gentle give-and-take were not calming enough for a bedtime story, Hallensleben's lovely dreamscapes (And If the Moon Could Talk) will surely do the trick. Double-page paintings of cloud animal shapes (with the little tiger cozying up with the moon), the "big mountains where the rain lives," and of mother tiger licking her baby are utterly hypnotic. Young children who are afraid to go to sleep will learn that "Dark is just the other side of light. It's what comes before dreams" and that mom is never very far away. (Ages 3 to 6) --Karin Snelson
Book Description
A little tiger takes an imaginative journey
The little tiger lay on his back in the tall grass.
"Close your eyes, little tiger," said his mother, "and go to sleep."
But the little tiger is worried about what sleep might bring.
His mother reassures him that once he closes his eyes, he will dream of magical places. And when he awakens, she will be right there, waiting for him.
Alternating between real-life scenes with the baby tiger and his mother and enchanted dream scenes of sleep's possibilities, Kate Banks's simple, comforting text and Georg Hallensleben's bright, colorful illustrations make this a charming bedtime story for small children.

Customer Reviews:
Great Illustration.......2007-08-22
I first discovered this book at the library. I liked it so much that I've checked it out multiple times and have now purchased it.
Kate Banks' writing is a parent telling a story to a child. The words are soothing, but become more poetic with each reading.
Georg Hallenleben's art fills the page and takes you into the imagination of the writer.
I am a new mom and have received lots of books as gifts. I buy books used or on clearance as I see them. This is the first book I have purchased for my son at full price - I love it and would recommend as my top choice to anyone. I like it for naps.
Wonderful bedtime story...........2007-07-04
This book is one of my daughter's favorite bedtimes stories and mine. The little tiger is adorable and I love how all the illustrations complement the storyline. I absolutely LOVE this book and recommend it highly.
Purrfect for putting your little one(s) to sleep!.......2007-03-09
The beautiful illustrations and words of comfort help our two children, ages 2 and 4, at bedtime. The baby tiger expresses his fears of bedtime while mommy tiger provides words to calm and soothe.
Simply Wonderful.......2006-05-31
The writer and illustrator of "The Cat Who Walked Across France" team up again in another simple yet totally winning story. This time, our protagonist is a baby tiger--so innocent looking that he resembles a cuddly soft toy--who just can't go to sleep. With the enormous curiosity of any infant, this little tiger doesn't want to close his eyes and miss the sky, the trees, abright blue bird--all the wonderful, wondrous things around him.
In time-honored style, his wise mother counters all his objections with a parallel in his "mind's eye." In fact, she suggests that closing your eyes can bring you an even more varied and rewarding experience:
"The little tiger rolled onto his belly and listened to the leaves quiver overhead. 'If I close my eyes, I can't see the tree.' he said. 'But you can, said his mother. 'You can see many trees, where you can play hide-and-seek until the night finds you and brings you home."
This book was just made for quietly reading to your child as he or she gets into bed! ALong with the quieting possibilities offered in the book's beginning, Kate Banks also soothes the "what ifs." WHen the tiger imagines he's a bird, he suddenly acquires a fear of falling. The mother, who may have read some kids' books herself, answers "I will be there to catch you." IF he gets lost, "then I will find you." Banks knows no fear herself, she even tackles the dark: "'Don't be scared,' said his mother. 'Dark is just the other side of light. It's what comes before dreams.'" (Awwwww...) The sleepy tigers imagines what he might dream of, and illustrator Hallensleben shows us a panoramic view of snow-capped mountains shaded blue and purple, sand dunes with purple-topped palms, and a giant orange fish jumping out of a deep blue sea, a seagull, an orange-billed penguin-ish bird, and the tiger dancing merrily on its back.
Hallensleben draws his typically rich oil colors here, and brush strokes and saturated, unusual color schemes (there's a bit of the Fauve here) are almost too visually exciting for a bedtime book. Still, a darkened room will dampen the colors, and Banks' ever-present, always reassuring mother tiger will undoubtedly work as well with your young audience as it did with her tiger cub.
A wonderful book!.......2005-07-18
This is a beautiful book about going to bed and having wonderful dreams! The story is simple for toddlers to understand and the illustrations are impressive. It really shows young kids' imaginations and that "mama tiger" is always there for her baby.

Book Description
What ever became of Sheila?
When special-education teacher Torey Haydenwrote her first book One Child almost twodecades ago, she created an internationalbestseller. Her intensely moving true story ofSheila, a silent, profoundly disturbed littlesix-year-old girl touched millions. From everycorner of the world came letters from readerswanting to know more about the troubled childwho had come into Torey Hayden's class as a"hopeless case," and emerged as the very symbolof eternal hope within the human spirit.
Now, for all those who have never forgotten thisendearing child and her remarkable relationshipwith her teacher, here is the surprising story ofSheila, the young woman.
Customer Reviews:
Torey Hayden is a fantastic author.......2007-07-27
I am absolutely addicted to Torey Hayden`s books. Each book is a masterpiece that you can`t put down.
One Child and Tigers' Child.......2007-06-08
I was so glad when I saw that Torey had written a sequel to Sheila's story. The patience she has with this child is something else!
I have all her books and am hoping for more.
better than one child!.......2007-05-19
Beginning is a repeat from previous book. If you read One child skip first few chapters and after that book is great. Last 50 pages I was whipping.
A fantastic ending to a fantastic story.......2006-09-01
After reading One Child the prequel to this novel I was intrigued. The novel left me wanting more and thats exactly what I got with The Tigers Child!
Sobering & Honest.......2002-10-17
Having read One Child over and over and over again starting at the age of ten, I was euphoric to come upon The Tiger's Child in a bookstore 15 years later. I had wondered about Sheila my whole life, worked for several years in a preschool in great part due to that astonishing tale. I believe all the magic that was in the first book, because that is the truth about the reality of children. The Tiger's Child was somehow more sad, even if in much subtler & less horrifying ways than the first book. Sheila had left her childhood, and Torey L. Hayden (who was just 24 in the first book!) was not in a position to help her to quite the extent that she had been able to in the earlier years. Torey L. Hayden writes very honestly and does not attempt to soften any of the difficulties in this later period. Her work as a teacher is remarkable & awe-inspiring... I just wish that somehow the world had continued to provide for Sheila as much as Torey had been able to in One Child. I ache that the extraordinary, brilliant light that was Sheila was not left with as purely a happpy ending as the first book leads us to believe is possible...but I strongly recommend reading both stories.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2007-10-01
This book was better than I expected. If you don't like Tiger you can skip the Tiger stories, if you like Tiger they're fun. The book emphasizes having fun, dreaming big, keeping it simple, and having a positive attitude. I read the whole book, then started going through it myself, and it's really helped my game. It's also inspired me with different approaches and attitudes for practicing, and teaching my kids and their friends about golf. Most of all it's helped my own game.
If any of the following describe you, I'd recommend this book - Tiger fan, need practice ideas, want to have more fun 'playing' golf, teaching golf or learning yourself, or are just looking for a good golf book.
Just as good for adults as for kids.......2004-09-27
For every book on golf instruction, there are thousands of people who are adding constantly to their collective bagage when it comes to playing the game. This bagage we like to insist is necessary, because, after all, we fear what will happen without 101 ways to fix a push-slice.
The thing is, children can play golf, often better and with more enjoyment than adults, probably because of the exact opposite reason: they carry no or very little bagage. There are things they get frustrated with, but their minds are not overly bogged down. Certainly not nearly to the same level as adults.
The method outlined in Rudy Duran's book helps first and foremost adults to learn to unfetter their minds and learn to take a simpler approach to the game. Then, and only then, should an adult try and take on teaching a kid. The 4 area/5 step method is one that will help most anyone to get back in the game and teach others by going against many of our most basic instincts: avoiding excess knowledge.
The book is filled with the author's memories of teaching a young Tiger Woods, but many of these sections are carefully seperated from the main text to allow someone not looking for a trip down memory lane to get strait to the meat of the book. It is also easy to read, not only for adults, but also for kids in upper elementary and middle school levels, meaning you could probably let your son or daughter have a go at it even if you have no personal interest in the game yourself.
The biggest problem with the book is that it seems a tad oversimplified, especially in regards to things like grip and alignment. These two basic elements of the swing might have been done in a tad more detail, but it seems that the author is relying on this as being common knowledge for adults and something that an instructor will pass on to kids. A few more notes on shotmaking would have also helped. Imagination on the practice tee or course can get you quite a ways, but a few extra hints, like how to draw and fade the ball accurately, might have helped.
Not Just For Teaching Kids the Game of Golf.......2002-08-16
The first thing I did when I found this book on a bookstore shelf was scan it to make sure it wasn't some book about trying to mold my kid into a money-spinning tour pro, like so many tennis stars' dads. Thank goodness, it is not. In fact, if anything, this book is the opposite: it is about having fun playing golf, especially if you are a beginner, whether you are a child or not.
Tiger, the book says, loved playing the game as a 4-year-old, and he just happened to have incredible instincts and skill from a very early age. What Duran added to Tiger's package was some guidance and direction via his 5-step fundamental program, and those steps and the accompanying drills can help beginners and high handicappers of any age learn the game in an enjoyable, low-stress fashion. If anything, Duran says he LEARNED from young Tiger, and passes those lessons of uncritical childlike joy in the game on to beginners everywhere.
It is an added bonus that Duran is enjoyable to read, with his easygoing style and anecdotes about an early Tiger, and the photos of Tiger circa 4 years old and up are a neat addition for golf fans.
So this book is really a balance... a little bit of "young Tiger nostalgia" and a lot of golf instruction, philosophy and etiquette presented in an easy-to-digest fashion. If you're buying it for the latter, you won't likely be disappointed and in fact will likely find more than your money's worth here. If you're mainly looking for early Tiger bio info, you'll find the pickings supplemental if not downright thin.

Customer Reviews:
A Great Picture Book for Children Afraid of Shots.......2007-03-11
Lions Aren't Scared of Shots is a picture book designed to help children understand that doctor visits don't have to be painful. My 10 year old loved the book and read it in 20 minutes. There are two sections. One is a beautifully illustrated story about visiting the doctor. The book was written by Howard Bennett, M.D., a pediatrician, and illustrated by M.S. Weber.
The second section was written by Jane Annunziata, Psy.D. for parents. She writes about child anxiety and child coping during doctors visits. It is filled with common sense methods of dealing with bringing a child to the doctor.
This book is great reading for children who have anxiety over doctor visits. I highly recommend it for parents with young children.
A Terrific Book.......2007-03-07
This is a terrific book that will help any child who is worried about seeing the doctor--especially if it involves getting a shot. And I love the illustrations. It also comes with helpful notes to parents. I have recommended the book to all of my friends who have children or grandchildren.

Book Description
Thomas hates to go to bed. And trying to get him to sleep is making his mommy tired! Every night, Thomas's mommy reads him his favourite book about Mama Bear and her three Litle bears. But one night, something magical happens. Mama Bear and Thomas's mommy trade places! The more time Thomas spends with Mama Bear, the more he wants his mommy back--and soon! Sensitively told with dash of silliness, this picture-book fantasy combines bedtime, bears, and the unconditional love between a boy and his mother.
Customer Reviews:
A clever book about getting a child to go to bed.......2005-08-02
Thomas doesn't like to go to bed. His mother has tried everything, including reading a story about a mama bear with three cubs who won't hibernate like they should. The mother goes to sleep, and Thomas is reading the book all by himself when the hungry mother bear jumps out of the book and is replaced by Thomas's mother, who is asleep inside the book with the three cubs.
Mama bear goes into the kitchen and loads up on the food there and then tries to swap with Thomas's mother, but it doesn't work. Finally both mothers are returned to their original place after a lot of trouble and anxiety on the part of Mama bear and Thomas. The story and the excellent art work by Stephanie Blanchart are well worth the reasonable price of the book. This book is a keeper and also a good idea for Christmas gifts. I recommend it highly
