Excellent guide!.......2003-01-09
Probably the best, easy-to-read book regarding coaching and mentoring for self-taught, busy managers.
What They Forgot To Tell You When They Made You A Manager.......2001-05-24
First, let me disclose that I am a client of the author. So perhaps I should be upset with Mr. Brounstein for putting out a book that has the same information I paid him thousands of dollars to teach me. Buy the book.
Remember the first time you dealt with a difficult employee - the knot in your stomach as you called them into your office. Learn about giving constructive feedback instead of criticism, and you may just turn a problem employee into a model employee - it happened to me. The knot may not go away completely, but with this technique it will definitely be more manageable. Buy the book.
Work smarter not harder. Learn about Results-based Performance Management, and get results, not just busy employees. Teach your employees to manage themselves by holding them accountable for results, not just activities that you give them to do. Buy the book.
Learn about coaching techniques such as Tutoring With Questions that will get your employees to start answering their own questions - and getting the right answers. Buy the book.
About a year ago I suddenly found myself in charge of 100 employees that had been thrown together from different cultures as the result of mergers and corporate realignment. Through the techniques I learned from Marty that are revealed in this book, I have been able to build an effective team of managers who in turn have helped me turn the organization around. A year ago, we were missing committed deadlines one after another. Now, we consistently meet and often beat our commitments. I often refer to my copy of the book for a refresher on Marty's techniques and regularly refer my managers to the book when they run into difficult situations. Buy the book.
Just in case I forgot to mention it: Buy the book.
Coaching & Mentoring for Dummies.......2000-07-08
This would be an informational book for people who are coaching or mentoring others. There are lots of helpful tips on how to get others to work for you, not against you. These tips can be helpful when you want people to try their best.
Coaching & Mentoring for Dummies.......2000-07-07
This is a great "how to" book. It has plenty of "laundry lists" that all coaches must keep in mind at all times. It is one of the most comprehensive coaching books that I've seen for a long time. This "on my desk" book is guarranted to have plenty of high-liteing and dog-ears within a short period of time. This is a must for new or seasoned coaches and coaches-of-coaches.

"To tell you the truth, you can learn the basics of meditation in five minutes," asserts Stephan Bodian, meditation instructor, psychotherapist, and former editor-in-chief of Yoga Journal. You can also study meditation for years, exploring its subtleties. Meditation for Dummies is a simple, clear introduction to the basics of meditation, including an overview of dozens of techniques, practices, and specific meditations, plus direction for going deeper. You get step-by-step instructions for a variety of meditations, including body position, mental concentration, where to put your attention, what to contemplate or notice, physical movements, and breathing. A nice touch is the recurring "traditional wisdom": ancient stories or anecdotes that make a point. This book is useful whether you want the nuts and bolts for getting started in the next minute or you want to dip your mind into different practices and philosophies. Nothing is too elementary to explain: "how to sit up straight--and live to tell about it," what to wear, dealing with fear and self-judgment, and what to do when you get "stuck." You also get plenty of information about the benefits and varieties of meditation. You're bound find and develop a practice that feels right for you. --Joan Price

Great book.......2007-09-24
Excellent book for beginners like myself! A good balance of theory and practice. I really liked how the author described different types of meditation techniques. I experimented with all of them and picked the ones that worked for me. I would highly recommend this book!
Awesome Reference Guide for Medititation.......2007-07-10
I purchased "Meditation for Dummies" several years ago, when I wasn't really sure just what meditation was or what type of meditation might be best for me - and even now, all these years later, I consider it the best meditation book I've purchased to date!
Unlike most of the books on meditation out there today - which tend to focus solely on one type - this one covers a wide range of different ways to meditate, including information concerning how that form of meditation came to be & easy step-by-step instructions on how to do it.
Through the use of icons, this book is structured in such a way that you can easily find information concerning:
1. Brief refreshing meditation exercises
2. Things to remember
3. Philosophical "musings"
4. Tips on how to make your meditations easier & more effective
5. Traditional wisdom - wisdom from groups who've been meditating for
thousands of years
Also, depending on where you are in your meditation practice, you can easily find the chapters that deal with:
1. What meditation is & other general info.
2. How to get started
3. Troubleshooting & fine-tuning your meditation practice
4. How to use meditation throughout the day
5. Answers to the most frequently asked questions
Overall, this book provides you with everything you need to begin &/or expand your meditation practice - and it does so in an easy-to-understand, fun way! I can't recommend it highly enough!
Buy it - a thoughtful, thorough & entertaining resource........2007-07-07
I read a number of other meditation books & listened to tapes before checking this book out of the library. I immediately knew I needed to own this resource. The title belies the insight and value of the content. It is easy to use & is a ready reference book. The author did a marvelous job!
Meditation for Dummies.......2007-03-19
Very comprehensive. It'll take a "lifetime" to practice but that's life. Thank you!!
Finally - a meditation book for the REST of us!.......2007-01-12
Simple. To the point. Lots of recommendations. Easy to read. What more could you ask for on the subject of meditation? Nothing. If you need a starting off point to learn how to meditate, then this is the book for you. Great value for all the info in it!

Bipolar for Dummies.......2007-08-18
This is the best book I have read on bipolar.
I have always had doubts about my diagnosis of being bipolar, but after reading this book I feel much better about the effects the disease has had on me. Not only did the book confirm my suspicions about my disease, but it gave me ways to counteract some of the feelings I have/had.
I have suggested that my wife read the book (when I am finished) as it is equally directed to your support team as it is to the patient.
Helpful.......2007-07-30
This gave insight into the bipolar thinkng and help for me to understand it better and deal with it in others.
okay but not that great.......2007-07-16
I read some of it but it really didn't give the info I wanted or needed.
A Must Have!.......2007-06-09
This is, by far, the best book on understanding Bipolar Disorder--that is, if you can get past the "dummies" label. It is a "must read" for people who have been diagnosed and for anyone who knows or loves someone with the disorder. It helps identify stressors and triggers, teaches how to take control of your treatment, how to select a mental health specialist, how to maintain mood stability, how to make positive lifestyle changes and gives you medication and other treatment options. All of this and with a dash of humor! I highly recommend it!
Great overall view of bipolar disorder.......2007-03-11
This book contains the basics of it all. Nothing to indept mostly if your in a real crisis. But it does give you a little understanding of ssi which a lot of books look over. I would definitfly recommend this book to another.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2004-12-24
I'm still reading this one, but so far I love it! It's got humor and helpful info, so I can de-stress while I'm reading about how to further de-stress. This may sound sad, but I think this has got to be one of my favorite books! It seems to have covered every place that stress can derive from and it gives useful and reasonable tips on how to handle it when it comes up or even before. It actually helped me to get through a would've been flaming-arguement with my husband without losing control and yelling at him when I read the section on venting beforehand. He wants to borrow it now. lol The tips in this book are easy enough so that you don't get stressed out even more trying to do them. There's nothing there that I've read so far that tells you that in order to deal with your stress better, you must first go to a field in the countryside over in Japan and be one with the grass and the air and the flowers and the birds. No crap like that. Just humor and help. My job isn't stressful but the trip to and from it here in Atlanta is, so that's where my stress areas begin. I carry this book from home to work with me and then back home and around the house to do more reading. I highly recommend this book!
Better than psychiatrist.......2004-11-07
I was feeling stressed out so I saw a psychiatrist (with my insurance a psychologist is not reimbursed). The only thing he could propose me was a few sessions of relaxation (I won't call it hypnosis). It helped me relax, but as soon as I left his office back into the stressful world I realized that it didn't really help me. So I ordered this book. My coworkers made fun of me but I don't care, they're all stressed out right now and I'm not. One of my coworkers even told me that I'm not showing that I'm committed. I guess people think you're really committed to your project when you stress out over all the things overwhich you have absolutely no control.
This book is great. He covers all the major areas of stress management and gives plenty of concrete ideas for reducing stress. The book is very practical, meaning you can practice it and improve your health. I read it about 6 months ago and I think I'm going to go back and read it again. If you're feeling stressed out I highly recommend this book.
A RELAXING READING.......2004-02-18
It seems we're not at all reluctant to admit how little we know as there are now over 50 million "Dummies" books in print. And, thank goodness for many of them, as my "WordPerfect for Dummies" has often saved me.
Now, we can learn to be tension free with "stress-busting advice and exercises."
Read by the author, a clinical psychologist, in his most affirming and encouraging voice, he promises that we can combat stress with diet and exercise and even diminish our anger and worry.
Stress Management For Dummies.......2002-12-13
You don't have to be a dummy in order to manage the stress in you life. There are a lot of things in life that can stress you out. This is an excellent book on stress management. It describes the causes of stress and various things that you can do to prevent or reduce the amount of stress, like breathing exercises. Did you know that a messy house can stress you out?
How about rush hour? The cartoons also help to de-stress you! How can you be stressed out when you are laughing?
FABULOUS BOOK!.......1999-11-25
I read this book over 5 times, and it just amazes me how this book is so clear about clearing up stress in my life. There is a wonderful sense of humor in this book. The author, Alan Elkin, must be a funny guy. I hope that he will write many more books. If you have any stress in your life, or if you even just want to laugh hysterically over and over again, please read this book!

Great Reference book for suffers and those who loves him/her.......2006-03-23
This is NOT a self-help Book. If you want a Self-Help Book, do your research and buy one. This book is a REFERENCE book about anxiety disorder. and is a GOOD ONE~!
If you have anxiety..........2005-12-15
If you have anxiety, 360 pages of info is overwhelming. Usually anxiety is not that complicated. Start with something simple that gets right to the point of reducing your anxiety (I did the program at selftherapy.org and loved it). Then if you want to become an expert, read a book like this.. highly informational, but not all that practical.
Disorganized.......2005-12-06
Abolsutely one of the worst self-help books I have read. There isn't any structure, and it's not simplistic. The advice given is helpful but the authors then reverse the whole deal. Its like one chapter says this will be helpful, and then another chapter says it wont. It just goes all over the place and you cant really follow what the authors are trying to get at.
A book I highly reccemend for anxiety and depressive related disorders is "Feel the fear and do it anyway" Much more simplistic, easier to read and get thru. And much more cheerful.
I also dont like that these authors have seperated anxiety and depression from one another. I guess they do have a new book coming out that combines them both. It will be interesting to see if they have learned anything from their last two failures.
But for someone that wants quick and easy advice, this book is certainly not for them. I'm afraid that this book of jargon will make it more confusing.
You can LIVE with anxiety !.......2005-07-24
Hi All
Firstly, this is a really helpful book... easy to read and putting all your fears in easy to understand words. There is LIVE after and during anxiety and panic disorders. Secondly, as per other reviews, Magnesium, calcium and vit B supplements do help to lessen anxiety. Try it, but first speak to your doctor.
GREAT READ ! Thanks Laura and Charles.

Magnesium can speed up relief; please read this review!.......2005-04-19
I am very familiar with the pain of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia for I suffered from these maladies for several decades. During those years of suffering I believed that my problems were purely mental and underwent treatment by psychiatrists, psychologists, and hypnotherapists. I took various prescribed medications and read many books such as this, but experienced little relief. And then something wonderful happened: I began taking a daily supplement of chelated magnesium (for a different ailment) and shortly thereafter experienced a significant diminishment of anxiety in addition to cure of the ailment for which I had originally taken the supplemental magnesium. There seemed to be no explanation for why taking supplemental magnesium caused this wonderful loss of anxiety until the publication in 2003 of the important book The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean. Early in her book Dr. Dean reveals that a major cause of anxiety and panic attacks is deficiency of magnesium and that magnesium deficiency is quite common in the U.S. Therefore, I beg all sufferers of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia -- whatever else you may do -- please purchase and read The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean and please try the magnesium supplementation which she recommends. It may change your life as has changed mine.

Book Description
American Sign Language (ASL) is something we've all seen Deaf people use in restaurants, hospitals, airports, and throughout the marketplace. The communication is fascinating to watch; to see people sharing ideas by using handshapes and body language is remarkable in a world so defined by sound.
Signing For Dummies gives you a general understanding of the properties of Sign, as well as an understanding of Deaf culture. Designed to act as an introduction or a refresher, the book focuses solely on ASL. Although certainly not the only form of Sign Language, ASL is the most popular in the Deaf community within the United States.
Categorized by subject, this illustrated guide covers grammar and sentence structure, along with the tools to get you going in basic conversation by knowing how to
- Introduce and greet people
- Ask questions and make small talk
- Order food and chat with salespeople
- Handle medical emergencies
- Talk on the phone
- Get around town for fun or business
Although "speaking" American Sign Language (ASL) is mostly a matter of using your fingers, hands, and arms, facial expression and body language are important and sometimes crucial for understanding Signs and their meaning. Signing For Dummies gets the whole body into the action as the fun-to-read resource explores
- Signs that look like what they mean
- Expression of emotions and feelings
- Signing sports and weather
- Compass points conversations: Getting or giving directions
- Descriptions of where it hurts
- Deaf community customs, norms, and culture
Each chapter throughout the book invites you to practice specific Signs in a "Fun & Games" section. Translation guides complement the video CD-ROM, which features demonstrations by ASL Signers and actual conversations in progress – all designed to have you moving your hands, body, and face to convey meaning that reaches way beyond linguistic barriers.
Customer Reviews:
Fair to middling.......2005-03-14
I don't particularly reccommend this for a complete neophyte to signing, as I was when I got this book. As other reviewers have suggested, a thorough video, or book-video combination might be best. There is a CD that comes with the book, however, it is too simple and has minimalist videos, making it by and large useless for a beginner.
The saving grace of Signing for Dummies is clear and simple sign diagramming, imbuing the book with at least one redeeming quality.
Would recommend learning from a video first.......2004-07-15
I nearly didn't buy the book, based on the poor reviews it got. Luckily, I spotted it in the bookstore and flipped through. It's actually quite good. I wouldn't pick it as your first book on sign language though, as some things tend to get a bit confusing if you don't already know some sign.
For example, I noticed one of the illustrations was of one version of a sign, and the description was another. Both were valid signs that meant the same thing, but it would have been better to have just one.
I also loved the CD in the back of the book. It is a wonderful idea for a book to show the language in motion.
Ok... but not great........2004-05-02
I have been teaching myself sign over the last couple of years. I found certain area's of this book helpful. Such as the "Cheat Sheet" that comes with it that has the alphabet and numbers on it. On the back are some begginer sayings such as "please" and "thank you".
I have found many other books much more useful (as I already well know the alphabet ;) ).
I does have some interesting/helpful hints and games to play that do allow you to practice. And also a quiz at the end of each chapter.
Pick up the "ASL Dictionary" before you open this book and you'll be better off. In my opinion.
I give this book a 3 but I was close to giving it a 2. :D
Signing for dummies.......2004-04-06
Angela Taylor is my american sign language teacher. If she can teach me... she can teach anyone. She is a remarkable woman and an outstanding teacher. Her zest and enthusiasm is surpassed only by her love for "communication". I will enjoy and benefit from this publication for years to come. Thanx,Robin

Brilliant Presentation .......2007-05-20
A welcome book to add to the growing body of autism literature! This masterpiece gives an excellent overview of autism and Asperger's and the wide range of spectrum behaviors these related conditions cover. Readers learn about autism/Asperger's (a/A) from behavior/sensory reactions to resources for adults on the spectrum. A lot of coverage is given to education for people on the spectrum of all ages; discussion about environment and sensory responses is discussed in depth.
This well written book is the ideal reference book and resource tool that will give readers a very good understanding of autism, which is a neurobiological condition and its spectrum partner, Asperger's Syndrome. Be sure to add this gem to your autism library. Parents, educators, medical professionals and lay people alike will get a lot out of this book and will certainly come away with a good understanding of autism. This book's fund of information will also hopefully pave the Road to Tolerance.
Stephen Shore who co-authored this book has written his autobiography and has autism as well. Temple Grandin's foreword endorsing this book will certainly speak to its accuracy and credentials; both Dr. Grandin and Mr. Shore are veterans and experts in matters pertaining to autism. Make this book your best friend and be sure to pass it along to others. It is a veritable treasure chest!

A BIBLE FOR THE PARENT'S WHO ARE BLESSED WITH THESE SPECIAL KIDS.
I learned about autism the hard way.......2007-02-06
A decade ago I learned about PCs from the Dummies series; I learned about autism the hard way when my son was diagnosed nearly 25 years ago. For the past 20 years I have specialized as a psychologist in helping the families of children with autism and other disabilities to survive and thrive with their adorable and loveable, but challenging, children. Stephen Shore is one of the truly remarkable people I have met on my journey. His latest book is extremely valuable for anyone starting out on this journey whether as a parent, a family member, or a professional living or working with a child who has received this diagnosis.
When my son was born there were few books available in public libraries, so I went to colleges and universities to get information. Now the pendulum has swung the other way. When I searched Google recently, there were over 20,000,000 sites that covered autism. The sheer amount of information staggers the mind. And surely there is no shortage of books on the subject-- a search of Amazon shows almost 13,000.
Where to start getting reliable, understandable information that you can wrap your mind around and that you can trust--right here!!!

What an invaluable resource!.......2007-01-29
Whether you are new to the world of autism or you are a "veteran" reader/researcher, this book is a must have. It is comprehensive, yet easy to read. This book is an invaluable resource for parents and educators. As an elementary special educator, I plan to keep this book in my classroom for easy reference for regular education teachers, counselors, and administrators. I recommend it to all the parents of my autistic students. As a grad school student, I have recommended it to the college as required reading for preservice special education teachers. As a parent, of an autistic child, I plan to purchase an extra copy and make sure that my son's school has this book in their library. I just wish this book had existed when my son was first diagnosed!
Congratulations to Stephen Shore for providing this guide!
Great "starter" book.......2007-01-09
This book is excellent to get you started on autism research. I found it to be extremely good for my son's teachers and others that may not know anything about autism at all. It covers the basics with balance between the different types of autism. I would have liked to see more on general developmental disorders like PDD-NOS but other than that it is great. My church will be using it along with several other books as a resource to get our special needs ministry started.

Eyes Glazed Over.......2007-08-28
It's not the concepts, but the way they are presented that discouraged me from enjoying this book. I don't know if it's British colloquialisms, or my lack of understanding. I read and re-read the same paragraph(s) several times! Soft, fluffy, dull, meandering; are just a few words I can use to describe this writing style.
yuck.......2007-05-14
This book was pretty well a waste of time. There is some information that's useful, but not enough to justify reading it. As stated in a previous review, the book is horribly laid out, and covers a number of things that aren't really NLP related.
Great resource.......2007-05-07
I am still reading this book. I sometimes read it through chapter by chapter and other times I zero in on a particular chapter that has valuable information.
This book as really helped me understand NLP and its uses. It is one exciting field!
NLP is Very Interesting.......2007-04-07
I have been slowly reading the book and find it fascinating and enlightening. Its outside the box. Great information.
Easy to follow.......2007-02-05
This was a great reference to my theories class. Studying Neuro-Linguistic Programming could not be more easily explained.
The removable "cheat sheet" at the beginning of the book is helpful for the beginner.
