Customer Reviews:
A very useful book to invest in.......2001-03-23
I bought this book in speculation. I have in the past bought many curtain books and found them not particularly helpful. After reading this book, I went straight onto their website and ordered other books that they have written.
This is probably going to be the best book on Curtains that you will ever buy and thoroughly recommend it.
A very Beautiful Curtain Book.......2000-09-19
The Pictures and Designs are the very latest, some of them do not even require sewing. My husband, whom is a Curtain Track Installer for more than 10 years; whom had installed curtain in more than 1000 homes also feel that the Designs that Catherine drew in this book are not only simple but nice. We are all very impressed by the up-to-date, mostly Simple designs which are very appealing to customers of the young generation. We will recommend our Customers to take these Unique Patterns. We intend to order one more book and cut them as Samples for us to bring round to show our Potential Customers. Thank you Catherine Merrick. Fm: Felis, e-mail: thechua@pacific.net.sg

Book Description
An invaluable tool for every kind of home decorating decision, this directory packs comprehensive information about color into one handy, pocket-size format. Arranged in rainbow order with removable, perforated color swatches at the end of each color section, the book gives readers a range of hues to consider. For example, the red section shows pure red swatches alongside hues achieved by adding different percentages of other colors to red, so readers can select the right nuance of red for a particular decorating need. Each color section covers the same pertinent topics: color in daylight versus artificial light; color texture and its relation to hue; and how to organize given colors into auspicious combinations. Recipes for mixing paints, washes, and varnishes are also provided, and a card "viewer" enables readers to isolate single colors or look at pairs together.
Customer Reviews:
Not complete and far from practical.......2003-04-26
The title of this book is a "false advertisement".
The Feng Shui sections, and the recipes for making one's own paints are far from practical.
The explanations and illustrations about what colors work well together are far from complete.
great book!.......2003-02-21
This is the book I had been looking for for many weeks... I found it very comprehensive. Being not too technical (there are other books on the how-to), it gave me great ideas on what techniques are possible and what the implications of a chosen color might be. i had never thought of mixing paint myself! i like the fact that it's has a separate section on each major color, and that it includes detailed thoughts on color therapy and feng shui. the swatches at the end are great to work with. the only negative comment i have to make is on the color mixes photos... most of the combinations don't look pleasant to my eye. overall, i truly recommend this book!
Not Very Complete After All.......2002-04-07
This book is mostly a collection of recipes for mixing your own colored paints. While they offer several recipes for each basic color, it is still an extremely limited color palette to work with. Worse, the blue section is extremely weak as most of the colors have a decidely purple tinge despite the fact that purple gets its own section. There are some nice colors in here, however, and people interested in making their own colors might do well to buy this book.
Perhaps most helpful to me were the brief discussions of each color and their best uses in the home. This includes a feng shui section for those who are interested in that.
Finally, the book also contains examples of which colors go well together which is a nice idea. At the same time, many of the example photos of these supposedly compatible combos are quite garish and ugly from my perspective (unlike some other color books that I've read recently) so its actual usefulness is limited at best.
In summary, this book is probably best for those who want to mix their own paint and perhaps want to learn about the feng shui characteristics of individual colors. Neither topic is explored exhaustively, however, and prospective buyers might do well to look for more comprehensive guides on these topics.
Grade 1 Art Class.......2002-01-22
This book just tells you about very basic colours. Not helpful to me in learning to apply colour in different lighting situations, in different combinations - no discussion of colour theory.
Completely Colorful.......2000-03-28
This book is a great reference for anyone interested in color, from beginners to experts alike. The book covers a wide variety of painting techniques, that are easily explained. Each color is explained and also the color is discussed in feng shui terms as wellas color therpy terms. A must for anyone who is interested in pursuing color a little further.

I wish the directory was more comprehensive. It's a great idea but had too little of the major important pieces of furniture. I found many of the items featured to be ordinary.

Customer Reviews:
On fabrics, wallpapers, paints, tiles and flooring.......2004-03-04
This highly recommended reference will find its way to any library with holdings in the decorative arts: The Style Sourcebook covers fashionable styles of interior decoration from the Middle Ages to modern times and offers over two thousand color photos to enhance its history of the evolution of design styles. A historical overview introduction deftly blends into chapters which focus on fabrics, wallpapers, paints, tiles and flooring - each considering varieties, history and evolution, and differences in mediums. Concluding with a directory listing international manufacturers and distributors, this revised classic is a winner.
A Must Have For the Professional.......2003-12-18
The Style Sourcebook: The Definitive Illustrated Directory of Fabrics, Wallpapers, Paints, Flooring and Tiles Revised Edition by Judith Miller, published by Firefly, is a must have book for the professional. The Style Sourcebook is unique in the crowded market of interior design books because it locates materials, motifs, patterns, and colors within specific historical periods. The author, Judith Miller is co-founder of Miller's Antique Price Guides is also a regular guest on House Detectives and The Antiques Trail.
An encyclopedic book The Style Sourcebook contains 2300 swatches, from a extensive range of international designers. The up-to-date swatches are carefully reproduced in brilliant color and are accompanied by a detailed caption listing all the information necessary to order, such as manufacturer name, pattern name, size, repeats, composition and, etc. Every chapter is devoted to a product category; for example paint, wallpaper, fabric, flooring, and tile. The chapters are divided into main design types florals, geometrics, pictorials, motifs, and etc. Then they are further subdivided into time periods: medieval, 18th Century, late 19th Century, 21st Century, and etc.
From medieval to modern, The Style Sourcebook provides inspiration and the facts for selecting the right ingredients for any interior scheme. You might need two copies of this book one to loan out to clients and one for your personal reference.
the difinative source book.......2000-06-24
This book is great not only for someone who is just getting started in decorating but, also for the professional as a referance. It is broken down into six basic catagories; Style guide, Fabrics. Wallpapers, Paints and Finishes, Tiles, and Flooring. Judith Miller does an excellent job of giving a wealth of information about not only different periods but also what textiles lend themselves to these periods. I was not to impressed with the paints and finishes section however. I really liked the organization by image (ie fabrics with flowers) and style period rather than fabric type or colors. The variety is amazing. The best part of the book is that she gives you the info to find all of the textiles! Including the maker, if other colors are available, and estimated price. This is great, other style books generally do not give you half of the wealth of information that is book does. I couldn't wait to get started.

The term "decorative" as applied to paint techniques can have a number of meanings; in this case it refers to faux finishing. This book provides excellent coverage of the subject with demonstrations, step-by-step pictures, and instructions for 27 different techniques, from antiquing to verdigris and including combing, graining, pickling, tortoiseshell, and marbling, among others. Some interesting techniques covered here are not often seen in faux finishing books: imitation bamboo, sandstone and lichen, and something called sugi, an effect resembling charred wood used to age the look of a piece.
Customer Reviews:
I like this book.......2006-02-04
it has everything you need to know about paint. great for beginners to intermidiate.
decorative painting.......2001-12-22
This is the first time that I bought a used book this way, I would do it again.
An excellent resource for faux finish techniques........1998-01-06
As a decorative painter, I use this book constantly to get ideas and practice techniques. I've found the step-by-step photos and explanations extremely helpful and clearer than in some other books on this topic. Also, the specific methods used here are interesting to compare to those demonstrated in other books on faux finishing -- especially the malachite look. I appreciate the fact that the authors use generic color names rather than commercial manufacturers' names (e.g. burnt sienna instead of "dried pumpkin"). Sometimes, though, I've had to slightly adjust the colors I use to achieve the "right" effect. And I do wish it included a more comprehensive assortment of finishes and effects. (Do the authors have plans for a second volume?) But, all in all, it's a great book and easy to follow for both professional and amateur alike. I'm glad it's in my library.

Save your money........2007-03-12
There are far better books on Southwest design and interiors. Very few of the homes in this book exibit what I would call Southwestern flavor, either traditional or modern. Spend your money on Santa Fe Style, Southwest Style, Desert Style, Behind Adobe Walls, or the one on John Gaw Meem.

Seems as if the books is just a display of the works by several interior designers

This book is full of beautiful pictures and wonderful information (including layout schematics) on successful design and layout of the most important areas of a number of leading health clubs. I'd highly recommend it for anyone trying to design a club that lends itself to incredible member experience and retention.
