Book Description
Decorative Style is the most practical and innovative resource of decorating styles, techniques, and tools and materials ever created.
Using innovative, easy-to-master techniques and surprisingly inexpensive materials (paint, paper, fabric, replica molding -- even photocopies!), Kevin McCloud -- a brilliant young set designer turned interior decorator -- shows you everything you need to know to design and create your own stunning adaptations of today's most popular decorating styles.
There are forty styles in all -- from Santa Fe, Shaker, Miami Deco, and Caribbean to Bauhaus, Biedermeier, Mackintosh, and French Country (to name just a few) -- each designed and created especially by the author and stunningly photographed, with literally hundreds of styling options and color variations to choose from.
Each style is represented by a complete floor-to-ceiling "room slice" -- a unique device that allows you to see the total impact of a scheme while easily visualizing its possibilities for your own room. The decorative effects and other components of each style are analyzed, rephotographed with a full range of imaginative alternatives, and cross-referenced to all the techniques, tools, and materials needed to create each unique effect. Even the most inexperienced and budget-conscious of home owners will be inspired by Kevin McCloud's imaginative use of inexpensive, readily available materials and amazing timesaving techniques.
Whether you do the work yourself or hire it out, whether you're redoing an alcove or an entire house, Decorative Style will kindle your imagination and give you all the tools you need to create spectacular, one-of-a-kind interiors that will truly distinguish and enhance the value of your home.

If Your World's a Stage.......2007-10-05
The rooms pictured in this book are very dramatic-- some might suggest over dramatic. But if you'd like some drama in your life look here. A Greco-Roman Bathroom with a claw-footed tub. There's a new plaster bas-relief panel that was given some treatment with shellac and lime. I would probably have pulled out books showing the frescoes of Pompeii and gone with some of their less racy scenes.
His French Empire study for some reason reminded me of one of my favorite Nintendo Entertainment System games-- Castlevania. I think it was the imperial purple walls, candelabra and wall scones with lit candles that brought that game to mind.
You definitely need high ceilings and lots of "stuff" laying around to try to copy any of his rooms, but I think the books works better as inspiration and frankly I enjoy looking at the many items in the rooms-- I have the coffee pot, cream, and sugar bowl that goes with the tea pot on the table in the Baushaus Study. It was made in West Germany after the 50's so it's not actually period.
Anyway, fun book.
Not Useful - Too Theme-y.......2005-11-17
This was a beautifully photographed book. I'm just not sure why I didn't like it very well. Maybe it was because I did not find much that was useful in a room that I decorate in my home.
The book was somewhat helpful in demonstrating some of the techniques used to get the wall treatment, but maybe I am a simpleton and needed more steps. The rooms also did not have a very realistic look. I did like the wall treatment in the tuscany style room but really didn't like the room. The Greek room was also kind of strange looking to me, maybe because the decor was so "fake" looking.
I was just thankful I checked it out of the library first before spending my hard-earned money. "-)
If you like a VERY themed room, you might like this book, but I think I prefer something a little more subtle and classy that does not SCREAM the theme.
Good, but not as your only decorating book.......2004-08-19
This is overall a good book that has an excellent section on faux painting techniques and a decent section on various periods of decorative style. The pictures can provide plenty of inspiration if you're going for a certain period of "look" but don't know what elements you need to get there. It also has a good description of artists paints and pigments and where they came from. IE, what exactly is burnt sienna?
I would give this book five stars except that a lot of his decorating techniques seem better suited to a theatre set where everything is built from the ground up and it only has to last a few months. I found a lot of his overall decorating suggestions to be ill-suited to my needs, where I already have quite a bit of furniture, want to integrate what I have into an overall "look", and want what I do to last until I decide to take it down or paint it over. There are other books that meet that need, and they make a good complement to this book.
This would not be the only decorating book I'd buy, but is a good part of a collection. This book is worth it for the descriptions of the elements in each style period and the faux finishes section.
A Beautiful Book, but not enough detail regarding techniques.......2004-03-22
This is an absolutely BEAUTIFUL book. Many styles are explored and techniques discussed, however, there is not enough detail regarding completing the techniques. I had high hopes when I purchased this book, but I think that if I try doing any of these techniques, I'll have to make it up as I go along.
Refer to it over and over again.......2003-02-14
This is one of the only "inspirational" decorative books that I have kept for years. Why? Because in addition in inspriring, it tells me what I need to do it. And it lets me feel that these finishes are within my grasp. Now all I really need is a house with rooms big enough to do much of this!

Customer Reviews:
Well worth the money........2006-07-12
The techniques in this book are so painstakingly explained with text and photos that it's almost as if the authors are looking over your shoulder as you work. The reader will notice many extra tips and suggestions along the way in margins, charts, stylized boxes or picture captions. One feature called "Masterstroke" contains ideas for one a bit more advanced or ambitious.
Mastering Fine Decorative Paint Techniques might be a bit overwhelming for someone who's never tried any of the techniques. It's probably better suited for someone who's done some experimentation with these techniques previously. This is not a book for someone who just wants to sponge a jewelry box or closet wall. At the other end of the spectrum, even an advanced painter should find things of interest here to help him/her fine-tune some techniques.
great for all skill levels!.......2006-02-04
I bought this book as a just in case my other book didn't have all the information I needed but I ended up using this book as my main book to do my house. Great illustrations and explanations.
A Great Resource!.......2001-08-02
I bought this book in preparation for painting rooms in our first home. Having always rented, I didn't know what all was required in preparing your surface or how to choose the proper application tools. This book started from the beginning and included these topics. The examples throughout the book are marvelous and the directions for achieving such great effects, as stenciling, colorwashing, stippling, sponging, ragging, etc. are easy to understand. The instructions also include applying the these techniques to not only walls, but objects like picture frames, candlesticks and furniture if appropriate. A must have for anyone who is redocorating their home and wants to stretch their budget a little further by using paint techniques.
Great book for any skill level!.......2001-01-12
I am a professional faux finisher/muralist, and I really enjoyed this book. I have literally dozens of books on decorative painting techniques, and this is one of my favorites. It's like an encyclopedia- lots of different techniques explained very clearly, with good general info. If you're not sure what type of finish you're looking for, this would be a good book to invest in. Also has a good color reference for help on mixing your own paint colors. Another nice feature is that there are finishes in both water and oil based paints. Some Faux books only deal with oils, which i personally don't like to work with because of the smell and clean-up, etc... If you're looking for a more advanced book, I'd suggest "The Art of Faux" by Pierre Finkelstein.
An excellant start for a beginner or a expert..........2000-03-29
I am currently reading this book as I prepare to redecorate my home using painting techiques. This book is excellant in the volume of information it contains from a discussion of colors, paints, glazes, brushes, and tools to specific techniques such as sponging, ragging, stippling, color washing, etc. I found the contents to be very specific yet simple enough for a beginner like me. The best feature however is the variety of color pictures that accompany each topic. Once I have mastered the simpler techniques, this book will allow me to move on to the more advanced techniques which are also included. Happy painting!

IT'S THE DETAILS.......2007-07-30
I NEVER ORDERED THIS BOOK. HOPE I AM NOT BEING CHARGED FOR THIS. I'VE NEVER SEEN OR REVIEWED THIS BOOK. LOOKS GREAT, BUT I DON'T HAVE IT
Novelty Item, Not Classic.......2005-03-01
I found the book more of a novelty item than a real classic. The projects were so over-the-top as to be completely irrelevant to even the serious, experienced, and adventuresome interior decorator (A bedroom done as Napoleon's tent, complete with military uniforms?! Another bedroom right out of a Bollywood movie set?!). There were some beautiful rooms (the kitchen, the Tudor room, the Garden room, etc.), but too many rooms were tasteless, sometimes bordering on hideous. Projects were often shown in disjointed pieces, rather than as a coherent whole (example: a photo that shows only a very small corner of a floor, rather than a large enough view to actually appreciate the design). There is a good section at the back, which discusses practical matters (basic how to), but I was left wishing for more details. In particular, it would be nice to see a good discussion on layout considerations..perhaps going through a room and showing it in different stages of design. The Stencil Library is absolutely the best, and I am a big fan of Helen Morris, but this book left me sorely disappointed.
The Armed Forces Journal Book review........2000-08-08
If you are looking for a relatively easy way to add a touch of individuality to your quarter which can be removed before handover, then stencilling may be the answer. It's cheap, adaptable, and easily painted over- and can be as individual as you want! 'The Stencilled Home' by Helen Morris is a book to inspire you- full of sophisticated and imaginative ideas, each chapter focuses on a themed room, with step by step guides and stencil packs to trace.
The Artistic Stenciler book review.......2000-08-08
There's simply no other book like 'The Stenciled Home'. When you open the book you embark on an amazing and delightful tour of thirteen themed rooms of Morris' stenciling work... Instead of following a trend into trompe l'oeil stenciling, Morris' shows us the immense possibilities that simple stenciling has in the ability to literally transform the interior of your home... It is the imaginative and innovative use of stencils that make this book invaluable... This is a stenciled house from top to bottom and definitely something not to be missed.
Period Living and Traditional Homes Magazine book review.......2000-07-12
Transform rooms with stencil ideas from the stencilled Home by Helen Morris. Helen co-founder of the Stencil Library, showcases a number of distinct perioid styles each with a stencil pack to trace from the page.

Great approach, with a bit of everything.......2005-02-21
This book pulls together a variety of spiritual concepts - feng shui, goddesses, purification/smudging, creating altars, use of stones and crystals, aromatherapy/scents in the home, and colors. It's really a great overview. Activities like spring cleaning and decluttering are covered as are specific rooms like bedrooms, kitchen, etc. There are some terrific photographs throughout the book which really inspire. I like that the author put all of this together into one book. I have other books that talk around all this - one on feng shui, one on crystals, one on potpourri, etc. This book ties them together and I feel like now I can go back to those other books and apply them better.
One of the best "sacred space" books I've read.......2001-02-13
This book was a real "find" for me. I have several books on feng shui and space clearing, and this one was intuitive, yet practical at the same time. It is spiritual but loaded with remedies for clearing one's space on this earth while we are here! I never thought to talk to my house, yet it makes perfect sense! It reads almost like a novel and is just full of information. I wish I could go home from work now and continue with the "read"!
Great Overview of different spiritual aspects of home.......2000-03-30
When I first looked over this book I did not get into it. But as I began to buy new furniture for a new home and pulled together my tastes and sytles (The Domain Book is great for that!), I found this book to be a wonderfully insightful book that helped me to consider Feng Shui and blessing my home and many other spiritual and tangible aspects of this place called my home. I have ordered a second one today for a friend.
No pictures, but lots of good info........1999-08-27
This book is a good introduction to lots of new age stuff (and common sensical stuff, too) relating to homes. Alexander gives recommendations of other books if you want to dig deeper into a particular topic.
Lots of information but not enough pictures.......1999-06-26
I enjoy reading, but I am a very visual person and was disappointed in this book because while it offers suggestions that make sense, it takes longer to get through the book since it is practically all words and very few pictures for inspiration.

Amatuers beware.......2007-06-13
I think Gary Lord does wonderful work and these murals are amazing. However, unless you are an artist or have invested in some equipment, this isn't for you. It has great ideas that one might hire done.
something better.......2006-04-21
Although this book was visually nice to look at I found it lacked in teaching me how to paint murals. I have stumbled across a great site that has free tutorials on it. The site is [...] I hope you find this helpful.
Marvelous murals.......2005-09-22
This book has alot of good information that both novice and pro alike will love. There are alot of techniques covered in this book and the authors cover them extensively. If you're thinking of making a carreer as a muralist, or just want to spruce of your own home, this is the book to start with.
Something's missing.......2001-09-25
I purchased this book in the hope that it would provide instruction to create the murals illustrated on the first few pages. Unfortunately, although there are very beautiful murals pictured, instructions are included for only a few. Perhaps my tastes differ from the authors but it seems that most garish and ugly murals were the ones that included "how to" instructions. It leads one to wonder if perhaps they do not want any competition in producing the more tasteful murals pictured! I also purchased the companion video and was disappointed for the same reasons- the instructions were only for projects I would not want to do.
Packed with color photos and easy projects.......2001-06-06
Use this introduction to create stunning murals based on a presentation of easily-mastered painting techniques applicable to home use. From tips on spacing and room perspective to using texturing and overlay processes for added finesse, Marvelous Murals You Can Paint is packed with color photos and easy projects which will encourage use in the home.

It deserves 10 Stars.......2007-09-09
This is a fabulous book and worth buying. I've had several of Sherri Haab's books and by far this is one that covers so many different mediums while making it all seem doable for the crafter/artist. I liked everyone of her selections here. You will be inspired. Glad I made the purchase.
Slightly disappointed.......2007-01-19
It has a great synopsis and made it very desirable, but very disappointing when received.
Sherri Haab rocks!.......2006-11-07
I adore Sherri Haab. She explains things very clearly, so even if it's a technique you've never tried before. There are tons of pictures to go with the project, which really helps as well. And I just love her style of jewelry making. I've been making jewelry for a couple of years now, and got a lot out of the projects. Plus the list of supplies and suppliers was handy so you know where everything came from. I recommend this book
Designer Style Jewelry: Techniques and Projections for Elegant Designs from Classic to Retro.......2006-07-25
This book is of a great help to me in jewelry making. It is easy to read and instructions are clear. Thank you for such a fine book.
Beautiful Jewelry to Make for Mixed-Media Crafters.......2006-04-30
I'm an avid crafter and have recently started beading and making jewelry. After checking out every jewelry making book in our local library and browsing through many others at a couple of craft stores I decided I wanted to purchase this great book. All of the projects are for jewelry I would love to wear myself or make for others. The pictures are beautiful and the instructions are very clear. There is a project for everyone in this wonderful book.

Customer Reviews:
the ONLY book on fengshui worth reading!.......2001-10-21
I have read most of the western books available on this subject, and this one is the best, most useful and down to earth book I ever read. thoroughly recommended!
Eye opening overview of a complex subject.......2001-03-23
This book is visually designed to open the mind. A great choice as a introduction to the complex study of feng shui. I have yet to find another book which handles the conflicting schools of modern and classical feng shui with more diplomacy. I loan this book to friends and family who ask me about feng shui and refer to it often myself. The layout is unconventional yet easy to read. A beautiful book I would highly recommend.
great beginner book.......2000-09-20
I have read many fengshui books. I have always been searching for good beginner book to refer to people come to my web site fengshuihelp.com. Compare to other beginner's book, this one is a little more expensive. However, if you are looking for a full picture of fengshui, this is the best on the market. It is well illustrated in language and graphics. The visual illustration is magnificent. No previouse knowledge of Chinese or fengshui needed. I would specifically recommend it as the first book for people who grown up in the west and interested in the eastern culture. It can also searve as a living room book.
A Beautiful and Informative Book.......2000-08-14
This book is as beautiful as it is informative. The author explains Feng Shui concepts and principles succinctly and eloquently. I found it incredibly easy to follow and understand because the subject matter is well organized and presented in a readable and artistic format. The book itself is a work of art.
Excellent.......2000-04-15
Probably the best book ever written on Feng shui, since the very design of it follows the principles of Feng Shui design - why hasn't anyone else ever thought of it? The author succeeded in putting across the principles , giving very practical tips and with creative flair.
I loved it

Janice Bullis's No-Sew, Low-Sew Interior Decor will help you whip up some simple, soft furnishings and give your rooms an instant facelift. Bedding, window treatments, table toppers, super-easy slipcovers, desk accessories, pillows, and other basics are a cinch to make and require only minimal sewing skills. Plus, there are plenty of allowable shortcuts, including fusible webbing, fabric glue, drapery construction tape, or using pretty bed sheets or dishtowels for certain items instead of decorator fabric yardage. The project sequence seems a bit disorganized, but that doesn't affect the good directions, nor should it interfere with anyone's ability to make these winning home-decor items. --Amy Handy
Customer Reviews:
Definitely Worth A Look.......2001-12-09
Even though I can sew, I still really liked this book. Most of the ideas are creative, unusual, and easy to implement. You truly can transform things and rooms with fabric, if you're willing to take a little time. It also doesn't lean too much toward gingham/ruffles/cutesy stuff, which is also a plus.
Save your money and learn to sew.......2001-05-04
While the book has some easy no-sew/low sew ideas the styles are way out dated. I bought the book soley on what the other reviews had said. Once I fliped through the book and knew I had to return it. A perfect example is the chair on the front of the book it has a sheet thrown over it with visible safety pins holding it together...need I say more? There was not one idea in the book that would do my house justice. This year I will learn TO SEW.
Easy as Pie.......2000-08-24
This book allows the non sewer to make all sorts of great things. I just built a new house, and I wanted to decorate without spending a lot of money. I saved over $500 making these things rather than purchasing them. I do not own a sewing machine, but I made pillows, lampshades, draperies, and much more. This book tops my "Best Buy" list. Incredibily easy to follow!
