Customer Reviews:
A Landmark Design Book.......2005-11-10
This must be the first full book-length study of the increasingly popular subject of outdoor kitchens and cooking. The author's style is precise and easy, allowing the reader to understand the history of cooking outdoors, which, after all, is how cooking got started. The book is beautifully produced, with a profusion of color illustrations and drawings which illustrate the text's in-depth approach to all aspects of the subject. From simple outdoor grilling to the design and construction of a custom, high-end outdoor kitchen and dining area, the reader can develop a better feel for the glorious benefits of cooking by fire. A useful index of resources for products is included at the end.
Not to be ignored are the many sidebars in the book, many of which provide essential information, such as those relating to choosing grills, the estimation of food servings for groups, cleaning a grill and food safety when outdoors. Major chefs and designers who specialize in outdoor cooking and grilling are interviewed, including 'Barbeque Bible' maestro Steven Raichlen, Dwayne Ridgaway, Food Network star Paula Deen, Richard Sandoval (author of Modern Mexican Flavors) and Dinosaur Bar-B-Que owner John Stage.
We can't all afford to spend a fortune on a full-blown outdoor kitchen, but Amanda Lecky's book is a great resource for outdoor large and small, and is worth more than its weight in (gold or otherwise) briquettes. Outdoor cooking has never been so fully analyzed and featured and this book makes you want to run out on the patio, fight the fall chill and grill a great meal.

Livro muito interessante.......2007-07-09
Esse livro tem uma serie de espacos diferentes e descolados que nos apresentam uma realidade inovadora e ao mesmo tempo classica.
Book Description
The sequel to the highly successful and critically praised book, Bar and Club Design, New Bar and Club Design is an elegant photographic journey through the latest international design trends in the bar and club industries, highlighting bars and clubs completed since 2001.
There has been a resurgence of cocktail culture and an explosion of the "style bar," places that are professionally designed and serve high quality spirits, wine, and cocktails. Such bars have continued to open in cities such as New York, London, and Tokyo, but also in Beirut and Bangkok. Another strong trend in bar and club design, documented here, is a interest in creating lower budget designer bars that are as visually interesting and unusually designed as the big budget productions, such as Andy Wahloo in Paris and Loungelover in London. Likewise, club culture continues to thrive, albeit on a far smaller scale than the superclubs of the 1990s. Nightclubs have grown cozier, late night lounge bars have emerged to cater to the "grown-up clubber," offering comfort and luxury rather than an empty shell in which to dance. The futuristic "superclubs" still being built now offer the very latest in technology and audiovisual entertainment.
This book explores the design zeitgeist of drinking and dancing culture worldwide. Divided by category into bars, restaurant bars, hotel bars, and clubs, each profile includes imaginative photographs, thoughtful descriptions, and architectural plans of the design. The innovative, sleek photographs allow the reader to enter into the ambience of each bar and experience its atmosphere. Sure to be an excellent guide for bar and club owners, architects and designers, as well as a sourcebook for new design inspirations, New Bar and Club Design will be appealing to travelers, night-lifers and design-lovers of every description.
Customer Reviews:
Unique Approach.......2007-08-11
This book is a classy edition to library of any nightclub industry professional and to anyone who enjoys fine design.
A sequel to "Bar and Club Design", a book I have not had the opportunity to view, this second book is reminiscent of the popular photograph books published with works of famous photographers. It is physically weighted, an unusual, square shape with high quality glossy pages. The book is divided by chapters that categorize the types of bars. Starting with bars, the book leads into restaurant bars, hotel bars, and clubs.
It visually captures fifty of the worlds most beautifully designed bars and clubs with detailed text descriptions that tell a story of their own. There are several floor plans that show the uniqueness of each of these clubs, beyond the photograph. Ryder, the books author, is a journalist from London specializing in lifestyle topics and interior design. This explains why each image in the book appears a true work of art.
Visit Coconclub in Moscow, Russia which is described as a "giant termite mound" by the author and as a "four level biomorphic formation like a mountain peppered with caves, suddenly put inside a building with a an eclectic façade" by its architects. The images that follow are an amazing feat of architecture and artwork weaved together.
See how Hajime in Tokyo, Japan has maximized the appearance of a small square footage area using some illumination and shadowing to create the illusion of a much larger space. Or the 2 million dollar color changing XL club in New York. The ideas, creativity and beauty seems endless.
This is a pleasant read and even more pleasant just to thumb through and enjoy the photographic art that it contains. If you own a bar or club, let it inspire you to make changes and differentiate your bar from others. If you just enjoy the nightlife, know that there are fascinating places you can spend your time.

The 'Spy' Legal Cartoons from 'Vanity Fair' - what fun!.......2007-05-22
This splendid book contains excellent colour reproduction prints of the best of the legal cartoons by 'Spy,' as published in 'Vanity Far' in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The leading British judges and counsel of the period all seem to be there, in frameable sizes and with the original text descriptions re-printed, and an added bonus is the pack of eight loose prints in a pocket at the back of the book. (Curiously, the one error that I have found relates to my late second cousin three times removed, Mr John George Witt, Q.C./K.C., 1836 - 1906, who has erroneously been titled 'Sir John George Witt'). There are 128 pages about 12 1/2 inches by about 9 1/2 inches, the publishers have done a good job, and the whole thing is such fun!
Entertaining.......2002-12-31
Excellent "coffee table book." Caricatures are sort of formal but funny. Very large/heavy book. Great for older/more mature legal professionals.
A RARE SECOND-BEST OF SPY'S.......1998-01-19
To those who are looking for Spy's legal caricatures, this work serves as a near second-best to the original appearing in Vanity. Good quality prints in frameable size. It would have been better if the write-up appears alongside the caricatures and not serially at the end of the book, making cross referencing extreamly burdensome. Don'r forget its a heavy book! The selection of the 8 prints is also dissappointing, although this is highly personal. Ong Sim Ho (Singapore)

Cooling Techniques for Electronic Equipment, 2nd Edition
ASIN: 0471017558 |
Book Description
A powerful methodology for producing superior thermal performance at low cost with minimum added mass . . .
Here is the only available comprehensive treatment of the design and analysis of heat sinks. It provides all the theoretical and practical information necessary to successfully design and/or select cost-effective heat sinks for electronic equipment. The presentation includes detailed explanations of the governing heat transfer phenomena, complete coverage of thermal modeling tools for geometrically complex fin structures, and extensive discussion on recognizing thermal optimization opportunities.
Other topics covered include:
- Fundamentals of heat transfer
- Thermal modeling of electronic packages
- Mathematical tools for heat-sink analysis and design
- Prevailing thermal transport processes
- Models for a variety of fin geometries
- Simple "transfer function" relations for single fin, cascaded fin, and fin array heat sinks
- Thermal characterization and optimization of plate-fin heat sinks
Completely self-contained and filled with valuable information not available from any other single source, Design and Analysis of Heat Sinks is both a superior reference for accomplished thermal specialists and an excellent textbook for graduate courses in advanced thermal applications for mechanical engineering students. This book can also serve as a text in thermal science for students of electrical engineering.
Customer Reviews:
Impractical.......2006-11-18
I used this book, along with Mathcad and Excel, for a 1st-pass design.
The result was a design that didn't pass the "sanity check" (fin dimensions so large as to make them impractical). Note I double-checked my results, retracing the steps thoroughly.
For a subsequent design I returned to the methods presented in the book I used for my senior-level heat transfer class (Kays and Crawford, Convective Heat and Mass Transfer), which required much less time and effort.
In my opinion: 1) It takes too much time and effort to understand the theory in the book, which is required in order to use the mathematics presented; 2) The book should include practical examples of how to use the technique(s) presented; 3) There should be a thorough presentation of how the technique(s) were validated; 4) This book does not present a practical (real world) method for heat sink design.
A good read for the new economy engineer.......2001-05-20
If you need to know the ins-and-outs of designing heatsinks -- then this is a must read.
I found the diagrams and examples useful.
If you are a beginner, as perhaps the previous reviewer is, then yes, there are not enough problems to work through and it would have been nice to see less theory and more real-world examples.
all in all you can't go wrong reading this book.
Too much theory, not enough application.......1998-11-04
As an electronics packaging engineer, I really get tired of getting the runaround from the heatsink companies and was hoping to find a book that gave me a straight-forward process for physically designing a heatsink. Instead I found myself falling asleep in front of a text that gave me flashbacks to my college years. I realize that theory is valuable, but if it is not put to the test it is worth no more than the paper on which it is written. The amount of practical insight in this book was derived from references and was enough to fit in a thimble. Examples were few and far between and although written like a textbook, there were no problems to work through to cement the theory. Face it John Wiley & Sons, this book should have been named "Theory of Heatsink Design and Analysis". The academicians will love it, but for those of us with our feet on the floor and noses to the grindstone...forget this one!

Book Description
A really well-designed public toilet is a rare and welcome discovery. It adds greatly to the impression made on a building's users -- whether in a restaurant, mall, airport or hotel. And, in the case of public toilets in parks and streets, a clean and aesthetically pleasant public toilet leaves the user with a positive opinion of the city as a whole. For much of the 20th century, "cheap and durable" was the rule. That trend is changing.
Public Toilet Design presents the best projects made in the last two years, worldwide. There are more than 50 public spaces shown, with the "facilities" well integrated into good design.
There are more than 600 full-color photographs. Each project is accompanied by plans and detailed descriptions that show the transformation of the public toilet as its planning, development and construction took shape over the last few years.
It includes:
- History and evolution of the public toilet
- Places of leisure: restaurants, bars, clubs, malls, gyms, theatres, museums, stadiums
- Commuting spaces: airports, train stations, boats, rest areas
- Public residences: hotels, spas, geriatric residences
- Work areas: banks, offices, public administrations
- Materials and accessories used
- Ergonomics: adaptations of the elderly, handicapped, and diaper-changing stations
Public Toilet Design is for architects, designers, public administrators, restaurant owners and other proprietors of publicly used space -- anyone wanting to give their clients a better impression where it is keenly noticed.

while the majority of the WC shown here were created with a substantial budget, Public Toilet Design demonstrates a wide variety of styles and settings that can be inspiring (if you can imagine a public toilet being inspiring) for anyone in the design profession.
