Book Description
A uniquely relaxing yet energizing way to achieve balance and healing.
Traditional Thai massage is a dynamic yet comparatively little-known form of bodywork that combines elements of acupressure, stretching, reflexology, the application of herbal compresses, prayer, and meditation. This therapy has benefits for anyone-young or old, active or inactive, healthy or not. Sometimes called "lazy man's yoga," it stretches the muscles, increases the joints' range of motion, and balances the flow of energy throughout the body to promote healing and well-being.
Thai Massage provides fully illustrated, step-by-step instructions that enable the reader to use this integrative and interactive therapy (with a partner) at home. It also explains the history and philosophy behind the techniques and discusses their connections with Buddhist thought and practice, yoga, Ayurveda, the body's energy lines, and acupressure. It is a complete guide to an ancient practice that benefits body, mind, and spirit.

A tremendous contribution to Thai Massage.......2006-10-25
This is a must have for every practitioner of Thai Massage. Ananda is a gifted master of Thai Massage and has done a great service sharing her vast knowledge of this healing art. The photographs showing the wide variety of moves unique to this modality are easy to understand. The accompanying text is well written with precise descriptions of the techniques, the anatomy and how it is affected, and valuable information about the Sen lines I have not found elsewhere. It is meticulous. I love this book and often use it for reference. Along with Asokananda's books, this is the best Thai Massage book available.
learning thai yoga massage.......2005-04-30
Before I began my journey with Thai Yoga massage I looked at a number of books on the market. When I found this book I knew it was the right one for me. The text is easy to read and understand and the illustrations are clear. Miss. Apfelbaum is someone who is able to articulate a bodywork treatment that is complex, beautiful and above all healing. I would advise anyone who wishes to learn Thai Yoga massage to use this book as a tool. She also has a website, a video (that is great for when practicing at home) and does workshops.
The best Thai massage book on the market!.......2005-04-16
With Thai Massage, Ananda Apfelbaum has made an important contribution by capturing this sacred healing art with clarity and precision. It presents a comprehensive overview followed by a clearly illustrated, complete, full-body Thai sequence. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in experiencing
the tremendous benefits and joy of this ancient practice.

Excellent workbook.......2005-04-07
Ananda's description of Sacred Bodywork is beautifully illustrated, explained and documented. She has captured the essence of this art and science.I can attest to this as I was with her in Thailand one of the many years that she studied with Pichest Boonhumme. She gathers in this book her years of studying, practicing and teaching Thai Yoga Massage. She combines her deep spiritual awareness with a detailed knowledge of anatomy and physiology in a way that elucidates the therapeutic value of her craft. Its usefulness is enhanced when used with the video tapes although one could learn without the visual aide. I do use this book in my own teaching and practice and am appreciative of its authentic, detailed methodology.I highly recommend it.
Great Book!!!.......2005-04-07
This book is clear, comprehensive, easy to follow with good photos. A good learning tool.

Pretty Good But..........2007-05-31
...I wish it had more info on places, and reviewed more places than it did. Still an excellent introduction and some very good advice about Social Security.
A useful guide.......2007-03-22
Admittedly, all I've known of Thailand is that many Cambodian's fled to it during the seventies, and, I happen to love Thai food. Reading "Retiring in Thailand" by Philip Bryce and Sunisa Wongdee Terlecky allowed me to visit the country and come away with a good deal of knowledge. While I'm nowhere near ready to retire, I can see this is a viable and desirable option!
The book is in five parts. The first is an introduction to Thailand, opening the reader up to customs and facts, amenities and culture, and offering the testimonials of a few folks who have retired in Thailand. Part two is the how-to section, describing in detail how to go about preparing for your retirement there. Information on passports, visas, taxes, social security, health care, and even plans for your will are all included. This information is for those coming from the U.S. and the U.K.. Part three details helpful hints on living and adjusting to Thai life, explaining mannerisms and etiquette, what you can expect and what will be expected of you. Part four examines the different areas of Thailand, giving the pros and cons of each major retirement spot. Part five is a plethora of reference information including websites to check out, a calendar of national holidays, a list of common items and their cost, and much more.
The book is an ideal opening guide when considering retirement in Thailand. It is also a perfect introduction to Thailand itself. If you've known as little as I have about this beautiful country, you'll be happy to sit back and explore through the pages of the book. "Live in paradise for pennies on the dollar" certainly seems to be true.
Don't waste your money.......2007-02-18
This little book offers nothing that you can't find online. In fact, chances are that information online is much more current than what this book contains.
Why Learn the Hard Way?.......2007-01-01
Well written, up to date, seems quite thorough! Detailed yet quite readable. Certainly lots of useful information it would take a while to find yourself. Invaluable insights on social realities, and tips to navigate by, from two people who have roots there.
Every book necessarily reflects the experiences of the author(s). When they are in that foreign country, have plenty of experience, can write, and interview others for useful stories and antidotes, its worth hearing, paying the attention, gaining the benefit of those experiences. In my experience (Belize, Panama), this book is some of the best of the genre.
Highly recommended, as is Phillip's other book, How to Buy Land and Build a House in Thailand. If you plan to do that also, it will save you (and will me!) a lot of pain and frustration, I am sure. Very detailed yet readable, addressing both the interpersonal and technical well. Unqualified 5 stars, as is this book. Thanks, Phillip....!
Excellent Book on Retiring in Thailand!.......2006-11-28
As a visitor to Thailand virtually every year for close to 20 years,
and a current semi-retiree in Thailand, I found Phillip Bryce's book
most helpful.
There is a wealth of well researched,as well as clearly experientially
based information, many of which even regular, long term visitor like
myself did not know.
Because work, land ownership and long term visas in Thailand can be
surprisingly complex to deal with, I found Mr Bryce's time tested advice
was invaluable.
I would consider this book a "must" for anyone who wants to spend more
than a few weeks at a time in Thailand on an ongoing basis.

Don't Build Home Without It!.......2007-01-01
Well written, and quite valuable. Very detailed as the topic is technical, yet also readable. VERY useful information it would take a while to find yourself. I would have liked to have some of the information in front of me before I purchased land there. As for building, its very local specific, for Thailand, and some region specific info also. Thats a good thing....
I'd say "Dont Build Home Without It," to play on the AmEx slogan (not that I have any fondness for those corporates....:). I wont. Many of the details here you will likely be faced with at some point, in a relatively complex place (land ownership, etc). The experiences (and knowledge) of others is an invaluable gift. It helps if you can also write, which he can.
Highly recommended, as is his other book (with Thai co-author), Retiring in Thailand. If you plan to do this also, it will save you (and will me) a lot of pain and frustration, I am sure. Also very detailed yet readable. In my experience (Belize, Panama) its some of the best of the genre. Unqualified 5 stars, as is this book. Thanks, Phillip....!
Excellent book on Building a House in Thailand!.......2006-11-28
Mr Puterbach's polemic against "How to Buy Land and Build a House in Thailand"
has almost NOTHING to do with the book he pretends to be reviewing.
Yes, "stuff" happens everywhere, all the time. But if you are dumb
enough to put your newly built house in the name of a nearly broke single mother
you just met in a bar, you are likely not bright enough to be building
a house on your own in another country to begin with!
Having said that, I found Mr Bryce's an EXCELLENT book on the pros and
cons, the risks and rewards of building a house in Thailand.
I personally found his experience and information invaluable, and would
STRONGLY recommend you not even consider building a house in Thailand without reading this book first!
There are indeed many complexities involved, and this book is the easiest
way thru the challenges you will indeed encounter.

Great Historical Book.......2007-02-22
I've been looking for this book for a while and finally found it. It was recommended by Ajarn Chai Sirisute who I had the honor to meet in 2006 along with Guro Dan Inosanto. It's a great book for historical facts and there are techniques (basics/intermediate) that anyoned can learn. I believe this book would be a great addition to anyone's library of the arts. It is a great book with great historical pictures and is an easy read. Plus a bonus poster in the pocket in the back on Wai Khru Ram Muay. . .awesome.
Much respect.
Muay Thai basics.......2007-01-12
A very good, high quality book about some of the basic techniques in the muay thai arsenal. 4 or 5 weapons of fist, elbow, leg and knee are adressed and explained. Beginners in the sport of muay thai or thai boxing should seriously consider aquiering this book, as it will definitely help their progress. Extras are a bit of the history of the sport, hand wrapping, traditional wear and combination techniques. Each technique is clearly explained with full color photographs. So you apply what you read.
Awesome.......2006-11-10
Great book. It exposes readers to the traditions and important customs when practicing Muay Thai, and includes great training information and techniques.
absolutly satisfied.......2006-07-23
You wont go wrong if your searching for an all-round muah thai info book.
Muay Thai: A Living Legacy Vol. 1, 2nd Ed........2006-05-26
This is a beautiful book; i.e. glossy pages with great pictures. However, Techniques instructions are too basic without depth or details. I guess it a good book for your coffee table or if you're new to Muay Thai. But if you are serious about learning Muay Thai, get "Muay Thai: The Most Distinguished Art of Fighting".

The ideal tool to teach geography, customs and oral literature of the lesser-studied indigenous peoples of the So Mei Penninsula and beyond. For The Compleat Beginner.......2001-05-27
I like Michael Ziesing. He's an interesting guy. But unless the idea of going to Thailand for a vacation just hit you on the head like an apple falling out of a tree, this book isn't going to give you much in the way of practical advice. It's pretty much a validation of a lot of stuff you already know, if you've ever been to Thailand and have a modicum of common sense.
Don't get me wrong. It's a pretty good read, and Ziesing, as I said earlier, is an interesting and entertaining guy. But it's more Ziesing's tale of his experience in Thailand, with a few lessons drawn from the experience, than it is a "guide" to anything.
Still, if the musings of an ex-community college philosophy professor on his new low maintenance lifestyle in a Buddhist country sounds like something you'd like to read, then buy the book. You won't be disappointed. There's not a whole lot out there coming from anywhere near the social/financial perspective of Ziesing about living in Thailand.
Come to think of it, these days there's not a whole lot out there coming from Ziesing's perspective on anything. Buy this book and help change the zeitgeist.
Great first look at living in Thailand.......2001-05-27
As a person who loves to go to Thailand 2 weeks at a time, I thought exploring the idea of living there full time would be interesting if nothing else. This book is a great guide on how to be a decent American when traveling abroad (not just in Thailand). Much of what I read in the book I already knew from studying the culture. I wish I would have read this book before my first trip to Thailand. a good book of realistic concerns That westerners should know and understand before even vacationing in Thailand!
I did it........2001-05-24
The book is great. In fact I bought the book and I did it. I went to Udonthani (in Northeast Thailand), met and married a beautiful Thai girl. I intend to move their next year. Buy the book you won't regrt it. There is a lot of valuable advice in the book. In fact I outdid the author - my is 30 years younger than me. Definitly its worth the money. And the author was correct in saying that Thai people are nice friendly people. Thailand is like being in another world - nice, friendly, unpretentious people. Buy the book. I should write one myself!
Sensitive understanding of Thai culture, few concrete info........2001-01-24
I am thinking of moving to Thailand. This book gives a good, sensitive understanding of Thai culture. However, the author's bumper-sticker philosophical musing gets a bit tired after a while. Practical questions about living in Thailand, such as taxes, health insurance, banking/investment (which a lots of retirees may be interested in) are not discussed. There is a chapter about fear and procrastination, which reads like the National Enquirer self-help page. This book is not worth the price, so I returned it.
A nice small book, but lack of concrete information.......2001-01-23
This book is wonderful in the sense that few Westerners have such sensitivity and understanding of Thai culture. However, his repetitive scolding of the bad, unappreciative and whinny expatriates gets a little tiring. The winding bumper-sticker philosophical musing about life gets more and more irrelevant, if what you'd like to get is up-to-date practical information. The chapter on Money, for example, sounds like a self-improvement pop-psychology manual. Instead of answering questions on taxes concerning investment withdrawals, health insurance, etc., the readers are treated to lots of philosophy about life. Since the book is not worth its price, I returned it.
