Book Description
When Papa Bear tells the cubs why they should never talk to strangers, Sister begins to view all strangers as evil until Mama brings some common sense to the problem. "The Bears' rules for safe conduct among strangers are listed on the last pages, including a rule about the privacy of a bear's body. A good book to start awareness in young children."--School Library Journal.
Customer Reviews:
This book is great at addressing Stranger-danger.......2007-10-14
I wasn't sure what to tell my 3 and 5 year olds about strangers or how to go about it. This book is perfect. It addresses strangers, but doesn't put total fear in the kids about it. It's a perfect introduction to being aware of strangers around them. Highly recommended.
Not for Preschoolers.......2007-10-06
I found myself having to reword many sentences in the book for my 4-year old granddaughter. She's at the age where we are trying very hard to educate her about strangers but this book is written for more mature children for some reason. I mean, c'mon, it's the Berenstain Bears but it's written in a vocabulary style that my granddaughter certainly would not have understood if I had read it word for word. Guess I'll just have to just keep making up my own stories!
Great for the Preschool Crowd.......2007-10-05
Lots of stranger-danger books are geared towards the school-age crew, 6+...this one is age-approprate for preschoolers. Our girls (2.5 & 4) both enjoy this book. We like that it opens the door for communication. It is general about strangers - so nothing specific about appropriate touch and that "stranger-danger" issues can apply to people whom they do know - but that will come in time (when they are older and with another book).
Berenstain Bears are a classic!.......2007-09-02
I read these books when I was a kid! I still think that they are cute for my son!
Great Book.......2007-08-10
This book is great in giving balance to the child's world. Very important to know that dangers exist but not with everyone everywhere. This book launches a child into developing caution when dealing with people he/she doesn't know.
Customer Reviews:
who is a stranger & what should I do.......2006-03-19
the book went over well. It was imformative to the children. It help reinforced what the family has been saying.
Excellent book about strangers.......2006-02-22
I bought this book for my 6-year old. We read it together and discussed what they were talking about in each chapter. Excellent book for talking to your kids about strangers - without scaring them. I definitely recommend it for most kids starting at 5-years old.
Stranger Savvy.......2005-03-24
This excellent book is a good teaching tool for helping children recognize who is a "kind" stranger as opposed to someone they don't know who is unkind. The beautiful illustrations add to the books appeal; the hypothetical scenarios will undoubtedly help children and parents think of methods to apply when faced with "unkind" strangers.
not age appropriate.......2004-05-10
This book is listed as age appropriate for 4-year-olds. In my opinion, it is way too complex for this age group, I would say more for ages 6 on up. Check it out at your library first.
Recommended for family, school, and community libraries........2000-04-07
Most children art taught at home and at school not to talk to strangers. In Who Is A Stranger And What Should I Do?, Linda Girard takes the idea further by explaining about "kind" strangers, the stranger who is not a child's friend, strangers in public places, "doorbell" strangers, and others. Girard's practical, well presented text is illustrated with the artwork of Helen Cogancherry to provide young readers ages 6 to 12 with visual reinforcement of sound and sensible narrative. Who Is A Stranger And What Should I Do? is enhanced for the reader with ten "what if" situations and topics for discussion with parents, teachers, and caregivers. Highly recommended for personal, school, and community library child safety collections.
Book Description
Kathy is waiting for her mother outside of school when a strange car approaches. The smiling man inside offers to drive Kathy home, suggesting that her mother may be hurt or sick. Just before Kathy is ready to climb in, her mother arrives and the man speeds off. Kathy is confused and hurt that the nice man would leave so quickly.
Later that night, Kathy's parents use examples from nature of pretty but lethal plants and fish to show her that animals and people that look or seem nice may be very dangerous. Not Everyone is Nice teaches children what to do if a stranger approaches and reminds them that looking or acting nice doesn't mean a person is safe.
Customer Reviews:
Suitable for 3yrs & up.......2007-07-10
Probably a little too "nice" for todays generation, my 6yr old probably needs more scare tactics, she didn't understand how people can hurt you and that is hard to explain as a parent. Having said that this is still a well written book that uses examples that my daughter could relate to.
We also bought the "Stranger Safety" DVD. I would read a book as well as show the movie to reinforce the need for stranger safety.
Limited Usefulness.......2007-06-08
My main problem with this book is that it is based on the incorrect assumption that strangers are primarily responsible for sexual abuse and abduction of children. Most offenders are people a child knows, most often family members. When an individual is looking for children to abuse, they often become friends with the family and child before beginning to abuse. Including information about strangers is useful, but focusing on that possibility leaves a child vulnerable to sexual preditors that s/he knows.
too long; not appropriate for any age.......2007-06-06
I just received this and I'm confused by the positive reviews. I think the book was a good idea, but the authors needed a merciless editor. The book is WAY too long: 20 pages with 80 words on some pages, practically a term paper, a painful one. The book is recommended for ages 4-8, but the drawings and language are more suited for 3-5 year olds; in fact I found the language down right condescending (babyish). There's a weird lack of cohesion about the whole book, like the authors hadn't quite figured out what they wanted to say or who they wanted to say it to. This book isn't appropriate for anyone.
Great Buy!.......2007-05-12
Excellent book for parents teaching children about the dangers of talking to strangers!!!
good opener.......2006-10-10
I agree with another reviewer that the metaphore of using dangerous animals that look attractive is a bit of a stretch for the young ones, I also think that when it comes to a topic this important it is best to be clear and simple. But I do think this book is a good opener to a potentially scary topic and this book does a good job at presenting a new idea without it being too scary. I would start with this book but I wouldn't stop here.
Book Description
Stranger Danger! By Patricia Stirnkorb; Illustrated by Claudia Wolf
What do you tell your children about strangers? That is a question all parents ponder at one time or another. Stranger Danger is a book that helps you find the way to talk to your child about this very important topic. Every year more than 50,000 children are kidnapped by someone other than a family member. That means aquaintances, strangers or friends of the family. The song stranger danger, on the CD included, will help reinforce this message as children sing along and memorize the words. (included in each book) This may be the single most important book you ever buy for your child. Read it again and again until they Remember the Rule-And Please Don't Go!!
Customer Reviews:
Safety Issues Are Necessary.......2007-08-10
The book drives home the importance that children should not go with strangers. Very good topic for parents who see that their children are too trusting and friendly.
A MUST HAVE FOR ANY CHILD!!!!.......2006-10-18
I purchased this book for my nieces and they absolutely loved it! This book is a wonderful tool for teaching kids about strangers without scaring them. My nieces especially loved the song that is included. They sing it all the time and I even find myself singing it from time to time.

Book Description
After a thump-bumping ride on a slide, a little girl and her dragon friend find themselves inside a fairy-tale book. The stories are familiar, and there's lots of silly fun as the Dragon is transformed into fairy-tale characters. But danger lurks in the form of strangers -- including the hungry wolf from Little Red Riding Hood and Snow White's evil stepmother. And it's up to the girl to keep an eye on the dragon, who walks alone through deep dark woods and takes treats from people he doesn't know. Little by little, the girl teaches her irrepressible friend to be careful about strangers. The winning combination of fairy-tale adventure and concrete safety information -- including the Dragon's Stranger Safety Rhyme and the checklist of rules at the end of the book -- provide the perfect starting point for discussions with children about stranger safety.

Cute book on safety for young ones.......2007-01-10
I like this book for my 4 year olds.... it introduces them to the idea of not going with strangers but it doesn't scare them either. Good choice.

I love this book! It's a wonderful way to learn about stranger safety and its fun too. The dragon is so cute and funny. When I was little i really liked No Dragons for tea because i used to be scared of fires. I read this book to my little brother.

Book Description
The "nice man" needs help finding his lost puppy. An excellent non-scary teaching tool for parents to read to children and discuss the family who unknowingly set the stage for an attempted kidnaping of their daughter in the park. When the "nice man" is arrested, the Police Chief cautions and teaches Grant and Karen about safety rules and challenges them to teach other kids. Grant and Karen begin with their multi-cultural, multi-racial neighborhood friends and they form a group and call themselves THE CAUTION CREW. They proceed to teach other children important personal safety rules. Cautioncrew.com, a site designed for children, reinforces these safety rules and lists state policies for missing children.
Children 3-11 will experience a story about children like themselves in 36 pages of beautiful color. The Summary of Personal Safety Tips, plus fill in the blank, will help children learn the importance of acquiring and practicing personal safety rules. 1. Never talk to strangers. 2 Know your telephone number. 3. Know your street address. 4. Be aware of people near you when your parents are not with you. 5. No grownup should ever ask you for help. They should ask another grownup. 6. You do not have to touch a car or go near the car to talk to someone in that car. A person sitting in a car can grab you if you get too close. So, talk from a distance. 7. If a stranger grabs you and no one is around to help, fall to the ground and let your body be totally limp like a rag. Practice this. 8. If a stranger touches you, yell "help" or "This is not my dad" or "This is not my mom." Practice this also.
A web site devoted to the Caution Crew contains the children from the book teaching specific safety tips to children. : Cautioncrew.com is an upbeat and non-threatening learning site for children

Not satisfied.......2005-04-14
This story is dull, and it goes on for too long without anything interesting happening. My students were quickly bored with it; I feel I wasted my money on this one.
Children of all ages will benefit.......2000-02-06
Having appreciated the teaching nature of "A Stranger in the Park", my wife and I purchased the book for friends and family with children a variety of ages. All of the feedback we've received has been very positive. The book has provided a forum for their families to discuss safety and the relevant rules. We highly recommend this book to any parent interested in engaging their children in a discussion about safety.
Very educational and creative.......1999-11-19
I wasn't looking for a book about stranger danger, but I am glad I found this. There is a great lesson to be learned here. The story is well told and well drawn. I was able to read this to my girls ages 4 and 9 and they both understood the message and lesson. I was particularly attracted to the fact that this story can be read to kids without creating fear or tension about regular activities around strangers. The author was right about the book not scaring parents or children. I think it is a worthy book and hope the next one is as good. T.H. Tulsa, OK.
As a crime prevention specialist, I highly recommend it........1999-10-07
This book is an excellent tool for educating children about personal safety. Younger children can easily follow along as the story is read to them, and the crime prevention message is very solid. The material is presented in a way that empowers the child, as opposed to frightening them, and it has a universal quality that tends to make it interesting and appealing to children from a variety of cultures. As a certified Crime Prevention Specialist and a member of the International Society of Crime Prevention Practitioners, I am very selective in the resources I recommend. However, I was so impressed with this book that I recommend it without reservation to parents, teachers, or crime prevention personnel working with young children.
The children loved it!.......1999-09-30
I have two young children and they both loved the pictures. They also understood the story. I thought that was the most impressive aspect of the book.

Customer Reviews:
Appropriate for Preschoolers.......2007-10-14
After reviewing several books, I found this to be the most appropriate book for my preschooler on this topic. It is a good place to start having conversations with your child and is sufficiently vague enough not to frighten him or her. I think if you have the expectation that this book IS the conversation, you will be disappointed.
Great Book.......2007-07-19
This is a wonderful book, especially for parents who are uncomfortable with things like this and don't know where to start. It's definately better read aloud with the child, at least the first time, so that they can ask questions.
scared my kid a little.......2007-07-07
My young school aged child was a little scared by this book, but the topic is important. I would still read it to her again (and will). Know your child, but your child NEEDS to know about this danger in a gentle way --- this book is a good place to start.
Appropriate .......2007-05-17
I had been looking for an age-appropriate book for my 2 1/2 year old twins on the subject of body awareness and molestation prevention. The problem was that most books either just talked about body parts, or were written for an older child (so they were scarey or just over their heads). This one really addresses those problems. It is a perfect introduction for preschoolers on the subject.
Good book for younger children.......2007-05-12
I bought this book for my 7 year old daughter. It may be intended for younger children as it is quite basic. I was hoping that it would cover more information for her age group, but it was good book to purchase.
Book Description
What would your child do or say if approached by a sexual predator? What if the person was a friend or family member? Can your child recognize and avoid a dangerous situation at school, a public place, on the Internet-or even home? Child Survival Skills is the tool you need to teach your children how to keep themselves safe.
Through a series of 7 interactive lessons, your child will learn: How to detect and avoid unsafe situations; what to do if approached by a dangerous person; how to escape at the point of an attack; where and who to run to for help; how to stay safe when home alone; and how to avoid dangerous people on the Internet.
Customer Reviews:
A solid teaching manual especially for parents .......2004-10-30
Written by two expert self-defense instructors, Child Survival Skills is a solid teaching manual especially for parents concerning how to teach children to protect themselves from dangerous people and predators. From teaching young people to yell, dodge, run, or go to a low-risk adult when a potentially dangerous person tries to grab them, to "red flags" that all children need to be aware of and immediately report (such as when a person stares at them for too long, or attempts to touch any part of the body covered by a bathing suit, or tries to enlist their help to find something lost), Child Survival Skills walks one through the basics of explaining, training, and reinforcing self-protective behaviors in the very young. Child Survival Skills is not a martial arts instructional; it focuses primarily on learning how to teach one's very young children to recognize "unsafe people" (who are often not strangers!), and what to do in case of a bad situation.
The Best Safety Handbook I've seen.......2004-10-12
This was a great handbook to read and do the activites. It was fun to do and fun to learn. Before I had this book I hardly knew anything about stranger danger until I got this book. Now I feel safer because of this book.
