Endless New York.......2007-09-03
This book is right, the things to do in New York are endless. My family and I have made many trips to New York, everytime we go we find something new to do. I enjoyed taking my daughter to see the Rockettes at Christmas time and then taking her on a carriage ride. Last Thanksgiving we went to see the Macy's Day Parade and it was incredible. Always something exciting to do in the Big Apple. Read the book and then take your family on a new adventure!!

Russian-recommended.......2007-07-19
Do you marvel at how sometimes, a complete foreigner knows more about your city than you ever cared to know? I have lived on the outskirts of Manhattan for my entire life: Brooklyn, Queens, and mostly Long Island. However, I made many frequent forays into Manhattan on the weekends, and I considered myself not the complete tyro regarding the nooks, crannies, and interesting activities that 'The City' had to offer. This book was recommended to me by a Russian immigrant, who had come to New York 10 years prior. I often marveled at all the interesting places she went, and how she knew so many good places to eat. It turns out that this is the secret! Although some of the 1001 ideas are very touristy, the vast majority are applicable to even native New Yorkers. So far I've had free hot dogs with my pints of red beer, had the strongest shots I've ever had (watermelon-flavored too!), spent more on one meal than I usually spend in one month, and I plan on doing so much more. This book doesn't only give you interesting things to do and see, it also stokes your curiosity to discover things on your own. I'm not a great reviewer, but I want to get across the point that I did thoroughly enjoy this book, and I plan on checking off the vast majority of things listed!
Top Rate Guide to Gotham.......2006-12-26
Although I've lived in Gotham for several years, this book helped me to fall head over heels in love with the city again. After reading "The Best Things to Do in New York: 1,001 Ideas," I decided to take the authors' advice and give New York City every spare moment I had left in my very busy schedule. In 2007, I'm going to tour the tombstones at Trinity Church, take a 3-hour Circle Line cruise, record a story in Grand Central Station, drink afternoon tea at the Waldorf-Astoria, buy lunch at Zabar's and picnic in Riverside Park, take in a comedy show at Caroline's and walk through several neighborhoods just to revel in their historical and architectural treasures.
This is a top rate guide to Gotham, one that's ideal for tourists, transplants or natives. Pick it up and I guarantee you'll be scheduling dozens of new adventures on your calendar as well.

Warm and calmly authoritative, Lidia Bastianich has won the trust of many cooks, who also devour her TV shows and books including Lidia's Italian Table and Lidia's Italian-American Kitchen. Lidia's Family Table also presents homey Italian fare--savory dishes like Cauliflower Soup with Poached Garlic Purée; Potato, Leek, and Bacon Ravioli; Skillet Green Beans with Gorgonzola; and Grilled Tuna Rollatini Under Tomato-Lemon Marinade--over 200 recipes in all. But Family Table is equally about technique; readers will find it crammed with instructive asides like "Using 'Pasta Water' to Make a Quick Sauce" (the water's starchiness can add body to sauces) and "Reduced Wine Vinegar for Vegetables" (heat-concentrated vinegar makes a deliciously mellow seasoning).
But the teaching doesn't stop there. Bastianich's discussions of risotto and polenta are particularly good (when preparing risotto, for example, the liquid must simmer for the dish to become properly toothsome), while a section on quick skillet sauces, like one made with sausage, onions, and fennel, will get many readers to the kitchen pronto. Bastianich also offers advice for preparing lesser-known yet attractive meat cuts like shoulder and butt, as well as quick-take recipes for the likes of whole corn cooked in tomato sauce and eggplant with scrambled eggs. The Bastianich approach also applies to the dessert section, which offers simple fruit-based sweets like Fig Focaccia, and Crostata with Poached Apricots and Pignolala. (Included, too, are a number of simple strudel recipes, a bow to the cooking of Istria, Bastianich's birthplace.) Color photos make succinct technical points as well as showing Lidia's extended family at table and very much in action. --Arthur Boehm
Book Description
The best-loved and most-admired of all America’s television cooks today, Lidia Bastianich, now gives us her most generous, instructive, and creative cookbook. The emphasis here is on cooking for the family, and her book is filled with unusually delicious basic recipes for everyday eating Italian-style, as well as imaginative ideas for variations and improvisations.
Here are more than 200 fabulous new dishes that will appeal both to Lidia’s loyal following, who have come to rely on her wonderfully detailed recipes, and to the more adventurous cook ready to experiment.
• She welcomes us to the table with tasty bites from the sea (including home-cured tuna and mackerel), seasonal salads, and vegetable surprises (Egg-Battered Zucchini Roll-Ups, Sweet Onion Gratinate).
• She reveals the secret of simple make-ahead soup bases, delicious on their own and easy to embellish for a scrumptious soup that can make a meal.
• She opens up the wonderful world of pasta, playing with different shapes, mixing and matching, and creating sauces while the pasta boils; she teaches us to make fresh egg pastas, experimenting with healthful ingredients–whole wheat, chestnut, buckwheat, and barley. And she makes us understand the subtle arts of polenta- and risotto-making as never before.
• She shares her love of vegetables, skillet-cooking some to intensify their flavor, layering some with yesterday’s bread for a lasagna-like gratin, blanketing a scallop of meat with sautéed vegetables, and finishing seasonal greens with the perfect little sauce.
• She introduces us to some lesser-known cuts of meats for main courses (shoulders, butts, and tongue) and underused, delicious fish (skate and monkfish), as well as to her family’s favorite recipes for chicken and a beautiful balsamic-glazed roast turkey.
• And she explores with us the many ways fruits and crusts (pie, strudel, cake, and toasted bread) marry and produce delectable homey desserts to end the meal.
Lidia’s warm presence is felt on every page of this book, explaining the whys and wherefores of what she is doing, and the brilliant photographs take us right into her home, showing her rolling out pasta with her grandchildren, bringing in the summer harvest, and sitting around the food-laden family table. As she makes every meal a celebration, she invites us to do the same, giving us confidence and joy in the act of cooking.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Basic Italian Cookbook.......2007-09-01
I really liked the completeness of her recipies, with lots of cooking tips and techniques so the book could be used by a beginning cook or a veteran in the kitchen. For me the directions were a bit wordy to want to use the book a lot, but once the techniques are learned, I feel like I can be creative and use this as a quick reference.
Wonderful Book as with her others.......2007-07-08
I love this book as well as Lidia's other books, not only the receips but the heartfelt stories.Beautiful colorful pictures, easy receipes.
Excellent cookbook!.......2007-05-13
If you love to cook, you'll love this cookbook. The directions are a breeze to follow, with photographs of some of the techniques. The recipes are fab, and there is room to be creative. Being a fan of the PBS series, it's great to see a show, then be able to go to the book and re-create the recipe. Generally, after seeing a cooking show, making the shown meal isn't really in the cards. But, like Delia Smith's series and books, Lidia gives the same quality and access to her art. I highly recommend this book.
Terriffice Book.......2007-05-07
I purchased this book for myself and loved it so much that I ordered another one for my grown son. He loves it as much as I do... Wonderful book, great Recipies. True to her style wich is simply Wonderful!
A new favorite cookbook.......2007-04-08
I've enjoyed Lidia's Public TV cooking program for years, and now have recently read her cookbook. It's a real testament to Italian home cooking being the glue holding a family together. The editors kindly allow Lidia's voice to come through her writing so saliently that I could imagine her telling the stories and sharing the historical information abou the foods as she cooks them. A real winner for those seeking to change up their typical Italian dishes for tastier, more interesting choices.

There's more than just recipes here: in addition to great menus for every Jewish holiday, Sorosky includes a short history of the occasion, the appropriate blessings, decorations and centerpieces, and essential religious items and foods--in short, everything you need to know and have to make your holiday meal a success. What's more, she provides a game plan for organizing your time in the kitchen and getting everything on the table at the right time and temperature. As an added bonus, Sorosky includes "Extra Points": special projects for children, invitation ideas, or special decorations to lift your celebration above the ordinary.
In her foreword, Marlene Sorosky admits that her upbringing in a tyranically Orthodox household spoiled Jewish holidays for her until she was well into adulthood. While writing this book, however, she discovered the joyous spirit of both the holidays and Judaism--apparent in every page of Fast and Festive Meals for the Jewish Holidays.
Book Description
Marlene Sorosky, America's favorite party planner and James Beard Award-winning author of Entertaining on the Run, makes the Jewish holidays come alive with simple, festive menus providing nearly 150 recipes and essential prayers and rituals that make it easy for home cooks to celebrate all year round. From Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Hanukkah to the Sabbath, Passover, and celebrations, including the Bar Mitzvah, each holiday chapter contains menus, game plans, table decorations, fascinating historical information, important prayers, and celebration ideas.
Here's the must-have cookbook for the modern home cook who has little time but lots of enthusiasm for keeping up with Jewish traditions.
Customer Reviews:
Easy and quick Jewish recipes.......2007-03-08
Recently I have become interested in Jewish culture and tradition, wanting to understand more facets including food. But the Jewish recipes I had were too complicated and time consuming, not to mention extremely high calorie. Then I found this cookbook. The recipes range from very simple to fairly complex, but the equipment required can be found in my kitchen, the steps are clear, and the tastes have been updated for a modern palate. Jewish customs central to the holidays are also explained clearly, with simple, effective ideas for decorations included. This is a great book.
Best High holiday recipes.......2006-09-23
The recipe for the Crowned apple cake is Awesome!! I make it every year for Rosh Hashana and everyone raves about it. This is just one the many wonderful recipes in this book. The Passover desserts are great, too.
Fantastic Delicious Book.......2005-03-30
I have a huge library of Jewish cookbooks, and this is now the only one I turn to. The recipes are easy to execute, and will make you look like a gourmet cook.
I use this cookbook, even when it is not holiday time.
The stuffed cabbage casserole is remarkable and the brisket is just devine.
The Pesach desserts are incredible, and everytime I make one, someone asks me if it was store bought, they come out so professional looking. They are that terrific. The chocolate chip cookies are so delicious that my Mom could not believe they were Pasidic. I also enjoy the ritual information, and table setting ideas.
The dreidle cake was a major hit at Chanukah.
The is the ONE book that you must have for holiday cooking.
It should be in every household. I have given this book as a gift year after year, and it is always appreciated.
A Converts' culinary guide to Judaism.......2003-12-25
Last year my sister gave me Fast and Festive Meal..as a Chanakah gift as I was converting to Judaism and had little knowledge of how to cook jewishly. This book is absolutely amazing. Wonderful meal suggestions that have allowed me to incorporate Jewish eating into my new life as a Jew with the attendant rituals. What I find most attractive are her suggestions on the timing of preparations and the possibilities for freezing.
Outstanding authentic recipes!.......2003-02-12
I was skeptical that this cookbook could deliver, but it does! I have made many of these recipes and complete menus, and everything has obviously been tested repeatedly; each recipe is a winner! I have gotten many compliments over these dishes. Best of all, I am able to entertain with two small children by following her timelines and preparing in advance. This has become a favorite cookbook of mine for all Jewish holidays.

Spirit of Christmas Book 17.......2007-01-10
As expected from this series, the photograpy and presentation are beautiful and the instructions for recipes and projects clear and accompanied by diagrams where needed.
This year's decoration themes are Snow Business, a jolly, felt snowman theme for kids of all ages, Christmas Provencal, floral, muted shades of cream; Contemporary Classic, featuring amarylis to stunning effect; Twelfth Night Splendour, in burnished gold; Natural by Design with squash, fruit and greenery; and Woodland wonder with cardinals and natural decorations. I rather liked the pretty chocolate section featuring the "trees" on the front cover! Beautiful and delicious!
This is a great book!.......2003-07-31
I just loved this book! It has wonderful ideas on gift making and giving that aren't cheap or "cheesy". There is something to make for everyone on your gift list. It has been photographed beautifully and the directions are clear and concise. I highly recommend this book

Customer Reviews:
Great Ideas.......2006-01-22
Beautiful Christmas is filled with great ideas, art to scan or copy for your projects, lovely pictures, some recipes (with pictures) and each chapter has a page of additional ideas to make your holiday spiffy. The instructions to each project include a picture, a brief description, a list of materials you will need to complete the project and a pattern if necessary. Many idea/project books of this type have only a handful of interesting projects and are more suited to checking out from the library, but this one is in the purchase category! My only negatives would be concerning that the final idea page at the end of each chapter. The font is a handwriting font that is too small and is in a slightly darker tone than the background. These three issues make the pages difficult to read (and I have great eyesight!) I would give the book a 4.5/5 if I could.
