Book Description

A host of dysfunctional and self-destructive patterns arise at minor and acute levels if an individual dislikes him- or herself. Despite the importance of self-esteem, surprisingly little attention has been focused on building it directly, until now. Designed in an easy-to-use format, The Self-Esteem Workbook presents a course in self-esteem based on new research and sound principles. Checklists, fill-ins, and exercises show readers how thoughts, emotions, physical health, and behavior impact their self-esteem. Periodic checkups help them gauge their progress, and final sections offer strategies for preventing relapse.

4 out of 5 stars Self Esteem helper.......2007-08-13

I'm still reading and working with this book. It is very helpful and informative.

5 out of 5 stars Very impressive!.......2007-07-22

I LOVE this book. I'm only on chapter 4 and am amazed at the things I have learned. This book really makes you think and understand things and change without realizing it. This book helps you to undertand the way you should feel about yourself, it identifies right and wrong thinking about yourself and it helps you to see who you are inside. Which is a good thing! I've always either been terrified to really look at myself or I've just known i wasn't worth anything. Now I'm in the process of rethinking this and knowing better. This workbook is a must own for anyone who doesn't KNOW that their self worth is equal to everyone around them and KNOW who they are and what makes them who they are.

4 out of 5 stars Well done!.......2007-02-14

Self-esteem is often talked about in therapy offices and schools, but I find many of my clients have difficulty grasping what it is exactly. This book untangles the mystery through self quizzes, exercises, and very readable, understandable information. I use it with adults and teens who seem to benefit immensely. Worth having on your self-help or therapy book shelf!

5 out of 5 stars The Self Esteem Workbook.......2006-10-29

This workbook describes in a very simple and comprehensive way exactly what self-esteem is, and breaks down the otherwise erroneous cemented beliefs we've had of what it means to have and to build self-esteem. The writers are clever and humorous while they walk the reader through a process of enlightenment using a no nonsense approach to each chapter. I've really enjoyed this workbook. It has definitely helped to change my thinking and helped me grow.

5 out of 5 stars great!.......2006-05-29

this book is one of the most commonly borrowed books by patients. they report liking it and it helping them in making progress in their journey to greater sense of self worth. i personally liked it, as well. easy read. not the most academically-based, researched book, but, then, it's supposed to be an applied workbook. another reviewer wrote about not liking the anti-gay sentiments. i, maybe not as astute as that writer, found that the issue wasn't as much anti-gay as it is the person who is gay who doesn't accept one's self. either way, it's turned out to be an excellent book, i would recommend it and i think that it was definitely worth the purchase price, new.

5 out of 5 stars BUY IT NOW!.......2007-06-17

If you're reading this review, you probably suspect that you have a problem with assertiveness, so take the first step towards improving your life by purchasing this book. If you have a problem saying no to unreasonable requests, if your legitimate and reasonable requests for what you need are repeatedly denied, ignored, or trivialized, if you feel surrounded by manipulative, controlling people, if you have been in a long-term verbally abusive relationship, if you are easily intimidated by aggressive people, or even if you're just mildly curious, this book will be invaluable to you. It's not just a quick read, though. It has thought-provoking exercises to help you determine why you have difficulty asserting yourself as well as practice exercises to prepare you to be assertive when the need arises. Even if you don't think you need improvement, this book is a great resource on communication.

5 out of 5 stars Clearly to the point.......2007-05-12

Excellent resource for how to deal with PA's and others-the book's no nonsense approach (yes, it's hard to change and yes your significants others will resist you), exercises, and examples give you inspiration without alot of nonsense and over the top 'you can do it' every paragraph.
Accessible and easily readable, this practical guide will help you get what you need or establish your personal boundaries without all the new age style rhetoric.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-02-18

This book is by far the most helpful book I've ever read. It is very informative, but in plain words that almost anyone can understand. The exercises it suggests really do help. I'm only half-way through it, but I've already made significant changes in my behavior. It really helped me understand the different communication styles and how to tweak my style to make me more satisfied with my communication with others. It's so simple to do! I've always been lazy about change or given up too early, but this truly couldn't be any easier.

4 out of 5 stars Good enough to write a review.......2006-11-22

I had reached a point where I needed to learn how to assert myself and stop being miserable in certain situations. This book helped me take action and understand how to react when confronted. If you feel that you are in need of some "tools" this is a great book.

4 out of 5 stars A portable behavior coach .......2005-03-14

Being a passive personality, I went looking for some kind of guidance after a recent confrontation. It goes through many basic terms and concepts of human relationships and behavior. The author wants us to understand assertiveness before trying to put new ways of thinking into practice. The important part of the author's lesson is reminding us that assertiveness is part of a person's behavior but is not the person. It builds up to the ten steps of preparing for a confrontation. The written exercises are useful, the diagrams and check boxes not so much. Some terms were basic but many times when things are not working right, we have to be reminded of the basics. Personally, I would not choose to use the assertiveness scorecards in my regular day-to-day routine. It goes over what a DESO script, Describe, Express, Script, Outcome; could mean to anybody's personal and work relationships. How one can change a few steps in giving criticism to create positive feedback. The Assertiveness workbook makes you take a breath, and think before speaking. Clear, easy-to-read, straight-to-the-point chapters are there to help when needed.

4 out of 5 stars Louise Hay.......2007-01-07

You really should read the book and need the book for the workbook to be successful. That being said, the workbook is a great tool for a person who is dedicated to self-improvement. You really do work in this workbook.

4 out of 5 stars Love Yourself, Heal Your Life Workbook.......2006-08-16

Great resource book for therapist/counselors. Good exercises to incorporate in therapy sessions.

3 out of 5 stars Duplicate material.......2006-07-29

This is a very helpful book. However, it appears to be the same book as is what is now entitled "The Companion Book" which is included in the "Gift Set" by Louise Hay. The website does not clearly state this duplication, and I bought both the gift set and the workbook, a duplication. I recommend that the website make this clear.

5 out of 5 stars Positive Thinking on a Wide Range of Topics.......2005-05-14

"These exercises will give you new information about yourself. You will be able to make new choices. If you are willing, then you can definitely create the kind of life you say you want." ~Louse L. Hay

Louise delves into health, fears, phobias, sex, self-esteem, money, friendship, addictions, work and intimacy issues. In her loving, caring way, she guides you through fifteen work"fun" chapters. I think this book is more fun than work. You will learn about:

1. Basic Techniques - Changing thoughts and releasing old beliefs about yourself.
2. Who Are You? What Do You Believe?
3. Health Checklist
4. Feeling Good
5. Fears and Phobias
6. Anger
7. Criticism and Judgment
8. Addictions
9. Forgiveness
10. Work
11. Money and Prosperity
12. Friends
13. Sexuality
14. Love and Intimacy
15. Your New Picture

You will find questions like: "What do you want that you are not having?" At the end of the first chapter there is a "Deservability Treatment" where you can read affirmations and perhaps extract one or two sentences for daily reflection like: "I am willing to create new thoughts about myself and about my life. My new thinking becomes new experiences."

There are many places where you can record your own thoughts about various topics like love, sex, work, money, success, failure and God. There is a place to write a story of your life and to draw a picture of your inner child.

The chapter on health might jumpstart a new healthy journey into nutrition and wellness.

If you want to pass this book along to a friend, you could also buy a small journal and make notes in the journal instead of on the pages. This book could also be used as inspiration for journal writing. This book gave me a great idea - to create an entire book just of affirmations. A lot of our self-talk can make us miserable or enlightened.

Louise L. Hay also focuses on reflection, meditation, visualization and relaxation. She presents a pathway to a more positive and fulfilling life that is filled with daily discoveries of beauty and nurturing elements. It is time to start loving ourselves more and time to heal our lives.

"Criticism breaks down the inner spirit, and never changes a thing. Praise builds up the spirit and can bring positive changes." ~Louise L. Hay

5 out of 5 stars A tapestry of Insight into Healing the Self;.......2004-09-13

As usual Louise has presented her wisdom in a easy to use insightful format. Her work over the years has gone from strength to strength and her theory of illness being a direct result of our beleifs and habits is an interesting one. While in some respects I feel this theory is only a part of the multitude of reasons for illness, it is never the less a very valid insight into how we manifest our lives. Do the exercises and I can guarantee you will learn something about yourself, and over time things will change. It takes time to restore the balance in our lives, however reading this book and doing the exercises is a part of the journey for those seeking to understand how their psychie influences their reality, and from that position it gives the reader insight through choices and awareness. Would highly recomend. TRUITY Williams from wanabelong(dot)com. Author of Book of Choices and the series Workbook of Choices, also the creator of the family board game TRUITY Choices.

5 out of 5 stars A College-Student's Review of "7 Habits ... Teens".......2001-07-24

* * * * * FIVE STARS! NO DOUBT ABOUT IT! * * * * * Last summer I found this book on my younger brother's desk--a gift to him from our mother. As an eighteen-year-old college student, I thought the writing would be "too young" for me. NOPE! I read the book and it has significantly changed my views of myself, others, and the world. On another note, I liked the book so much that I decided to check out 'the original,' Sean's father's book (7 Habits of ... *people*): the verdict: I personally found the book for Teens a MUCH better read. Sean's writing style is concise and very visual, making it easy to understand, enjoyable, and fun. The anecdotes and stories are universally applicable--despite racial, economic, etc. backgrounds (or even age!). He doesn't waste time getting to the point, taking a single paragraph to introduce a new concept, and then supporting it with two or three stories, anecdotes, or quotations; and yes, there are even pictures too! The end product is something that is VERY enjoyable, practicable, and has helpful. If you have ANY doubts about whether or not to read this book, I would say that if you are even looking into it enough to read this review, you and someone you know can greatly benefit from the ideas in this book. Of course self-change is scary and difficult, but this book makes it fun and easy. It's helped me to not only improve my own life, but also that of my younger brother, guiding me to be a better role model for him. When I first found this book I had made fun of it, but as soon as I had begun reading, I was hooked [or as the book would have me say, "I hooked myself..."] Thanks Sean (and Stephen) for your contribution(s)! [And thanks Mom, too...] : - )

5 out of 5 stars A very interesting, and lifechanging book.......2001-04-24

I have personally read this book, and ( as a 13 year old), it has drasticly changed my life. There are passages in this book that told me things about myself I never knew. Like this " I'f who I am, is what I have, and what I have is lost, who am I ?" I no longer feal that money or impotance should matter in my life. I should live it accourding to my life, and not by the will of others.

5 out of 5 stars A book for EVERY teen.......2001-02-23

Any teen can learn a lot from this book. It is approachable and understandable, but straight-forward. It is helpful and inspiring, and I would highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Useful resource.......2006-08-15

Socail anxiety effects the quality of life of many human beings. Ive worked with a number of individuals with this difficulty and was able to aid in their recovery through the use of exercise in this workbook as well as other modalities of treatment. If you are affected by social anxiety or other fears this is a helful resource combined with the help of a trusting therapist or counselor. Remember you dont have to livce thsi way and if you have a sincere desire to improve you certainly will. Believe in yourself and and you can conquer any challenge in life. Recommended as a resource.

4 out of 5 stars Cognitive thinking.......2006-07-12

This is the first Cognitive thinking book I've read I found it very helpful and it really works. You have to do your part. You can't JUST read it. Its very interesting book too. If you'd like to just become more self-aware. There are other reasons why people seem rude or what not.

3 out of 5 stars Somewhat helpful.......2006-04-04

This book can be used toghether with therapy (I recommend Dr Richards selp help series that you can buy on line). The book does not teach you how to change your negative thinking, it only teaches you how to create a hierachy for social situations to work with. It is only helpful if combined with other books/therapies.

2 out of 5 stars this book is so self explanatory.......2005-06-27

This book was really a waste of time. When I was done reading, I was no better off than when I started. The beginning is really interesting in that it describes what kind of feelings go on inside the mind of a shy person. I thought I was the only one in the world who felt these things, and it was interesting to see them expressed by someone else in a book. So I continued to read on to the parts where they tell you how to get better. It said to try stuff like writing in a journal every day and to "think positive", "be assertive", and "practice making small talk". Like I didn't consider that on my own! This book really did not need to be written. What they could have done was just take the beginning of the book and sell it on its own as a short story or something, since it is the only useful or interesting part. After the first part of the book, it's basically telling you to go see a psychiatrist or get medication or both. It starts to get repetitive and is basically filled with the same useless suggestions that any person could have thought of, but they keep re-wording them throughout the book. So save yourself some money and don't buy this book. If you're interested in reading the opening part of the book, see if you can find it in a library.

3 out of 5 stars I had social anxiety, now completely cured with these books.......2003-02-14

I was trying to think of a way to help everyone out there who has been dealing with the same feelings that I have been. I have tried everything that people recommend for social anxiety, many exposures, going to programs, numerous therapists. If I had known even two months ago that today I would feel at ease in many situations I never would have believed it. The two books that will change you noticably and permanently are both "Feeling Good", and "Psycho-cybernetics". I had tried everything out there I could get my hands on, and then these two books were a godsend. After a week into "Feeling Good" you will actually start feeling like the person you want to be, and a month into it you will feel SO much better. I recommend that after that go directly into "Psycho-Cybernetics". The introduction says that he thought his book would never sell because nobody would believe his claims that he can give you the personality you want through visualization, and I thought it was hype. Then after doing it for a few days I was amazed. I have only used this book a week, and am already very much better. You dont need the therapists, drugs, alcohol or the bible to feel better, just get these two books, be committed to them. Give them a month, and if you change half as much as I have you will be very glad you did. You dont need to sit inside worried, these books will make you the person you want to be.

Book Description

Although men and women can articulate anger in very different ways, books on managing problem anger tend to focus on men and their tendency toward more violent anger expression. This workbook addresses the unique concerns of women with anger problems. Rigid social patterning, the book argues, conditions many women to stifle or deny their anger, and this repression can cause a range of other psychological problems. Others experience violent, outwardly focused anger. Whichever pattern your anger follows, you'll learn healthier ways to express your anger from this workbook.

Building on women's tendency to be more relational than men, this book advocates interactive techniques as a primary method of anger management intervention. It integrates elements of narrative, art, and music therapy into a powerful set of anger management tools. Cognitive behavioral and attitude adjustment exercises help you limit the power of anger-triggering situations. Worksheets and assessments guide you in an examination of family-of-origin issues that might contribute to your problems with anger. Sections of the workbook explore the connection between anger and substance abuse, mood disorders, and spirituality, as well as the issue of domestic violence in lesbian households.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Women Handle Anger Very Differently Than Men.......2007-01-10

I believe it is vitally important for our society to realize that men and women handle and exhibit anger in very different ways. This book has taught me a lot about feminine anger, and subsequently my own anger. I've found it to work especially well in conjunction with individual therapy. I highly recommend this book to women suffering from depression and/or anxiety, since those are both common masks of feminine anger.

4 out of 5 stars Anger Management for Women.......2006-11-08

We have found this book to be very helpful with women we serve. It is specific to women, and their exeriences with anger in our world. We have added other items to our groups, but the basic knowledge in the book has been quite good.

2 out of 5 stars This is a workbook only, not text!.......2006-10-30

I bought this book in error, I thought there would be something I could read and learn with maybe a few writing exercises. Either I should have read the description better or else a better description should have been written. Anyway, there is only one or two short paragraphs to read then a whole bunch of questions to answer. Some of the questions I didn't even understand, and there is no explanation afterwards as to what my answers mean. I was very disappointed especially since I am unable to get my money back, having written in it already.

5 out of 5 stars Great Anger Workbook.......2004-12-10

I would definitly recommend the "Anger Workbook for Women," Dr. Laura Petracek was excellent in way in dealing with inward and outward anger. Her recommendations and advice, and workbook style pages is a great ways to address you anger and also keep a journal to see your own improvement. This book is a great resource and a great deal!

5 out of 5 stars Women Get Angry, Too.......2004-11-25

As a mental health practicioner and specialist in the fields of anger management and family violence, I highly recommend Laura Petraceks's new book. To her credit, the author does not minimize or excuse women's anger, and understands that whether directed inwardly or outwardly, aggressive impulses are highly destructive regardless of the individual's gender. But the author also understands that in some ways women experience anger differently than men. Her sections on anger and depression are insightful, and her discussion of PMS is straighforward and refreshingly un-PC. Overall, the information is presented clearly and directly, and the exercises well-thought-out and practical. It should be a wonderful aid to any woman seriously working on anger issues, whether she is doing so in an invidual, couples or group therapy setting.

5 out of 5 stars At last..........2007-08-13

As a parent of a BDD sufferer, I was pleased to read through the workbook before presenting it to our family member. If read and followed, it should help with any one in BDD's grip.

5 out of 5 stars A good start when not ready to seek help.......2006-03-16

I've already read this book twice, it's a very good support when I feel overwhelmed by my body obsessions, its best point is that it made me feel that I'm strong enough to gradually change. Everytime I doubt I read some specific passages to put be back on the track.

5 out of 5 stars INFORMATIVE.......2006-02-28

Although I have just started reading the workbook and starting the exercises, it seems like it could help with BDD. I think this would be helpful to those with BDD or a similar condition.

Book Description

You are special.

You are precious.

You are It!

Today, Iyanla Vanzant is a bestselling author with her own business and a loving family. But it wasn't so long ago that she was a teenager -- a sixteen-year-old mother and high school dropout on welfare. Iyanla knows that a young woman's journey can be lonely and hard. She remembers how difficult it is to put into words the way you feel, how it feels to want to be loved.

In Don't Give It Away!, Iyanla presents a workbook in which you can write your feelings and express your thoughts about the things that matter to you -- your family, your friends, your body, and your love life. Problems at home and at school are a natural part of every young woman's life, but understanding what to do with how you feel about your problems is the key to growing up. Iyanla Vanzant shows you that the love you seek is the love that you are.

Book Description

In her first book, Breaking the Chain of Low Self-Esteem, Dr. Sorensen revealed startling new insights into the inner experience of those who suffer from low self-esteem (LSE). Now in response to the hundreds of requests for more information about her successful recovery program, she presents this workbook as a guide for recognizing, dismantling and altering the distorted and irrational thinking process that accompanies LSE.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Help for continuing to work on LSE Recovery.......2003-02-04

This workbook brought up many emotions and remembrances from my childhood that helped me to understand how my low self-esteem was formed. Working through it also enabled me to more closely see the ways in which my thinking controls my feelings and how often my thinking is distorted because of the negative feelings I have about myself. It was tough to work through but very rewarding.

4 out of 5 stars Great self discovery guide!.......2002-10-06

I enjoy the combination of informative reading about low self esteem & the exercises of going through my childhood. It allows
me to address my feelings about the people, incidents & other
areas of my childhood, adolescence & teen years.

Through 2 stories in the workbook, it asks what were the negative
reactions to the situation, then asks how a person with healthy
self esteem would respond to these situations. These exercises
illustrated how to change your feelings to a situation that has
been uncomfortable before.

Following the order in the workbook, I enjoyed the variety of
going through the "obstacles", then reading a chapter of "Breaking the Chains of Low Self Esteem", then going back to the
obstacle exercises in the workbook. It seems like an adventure
and I look forward to moving on to the next one!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good book but one to hate.......2007-08-28

This book is nothing but exercises - draw a picture of.... write down how you feel about.... I am sure that this book is a useful one, but quite frankly the odds of me finishing this book are zero. I would prefer to jump out of a plane than seriously complete this tedious book!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for anyone, I recommend it to my clients regularly.......2007-03-07

This book is a great resource for re-discovery the self and exploring your conditioning. It is loaded with practical exercises that really will help you to make your life better. It can be used as a resource along with counseling or it can stand alone. It is largely based on modern cognitive therapeutic methods that have proven effective and does not push a particular religious orientation although Cheri Huber is a Buddhist and founded a monastery. She is also a woman who has helped many people including herself and certainly has the credibility to put out good material. Very highly recommended for pre-teens, teens and adults. Her other books are very good as well and she has a Self Acceptance audio course that would be a wonderful accompaniment to this book. If you are not working with a counselor, I would recommend getting both to reinforce the ideas and help you to put them into practice. Change is possible, but it isn't always easy!

5 out of 5 stars This is a great resource for counselors!.......2005-01-26

I have been a high school counselor, and am now a college counselor, and I have found this book to be a great resource to draw from when trying to help students with self-acceptance/discovery. The exercises are very thought-provoking and revealing. For anyone willing to take the time to work through them, the reward is a much greater understanding of self, and an improved self-concept.

4 out of 5 stars Get to know yourself.......2004-06-07

I picked up this book by chance years ago and really appreciate all its taught me about myself.
It is useful and insightful. It asks important questions to get you thinking. It is engaging because it comes in a creative format with blank space for you to write, draw, paint or paste.
I felt it well worth my money.

5 out of 5 stars not a professional, but...........2002-11-27

I am not a psychology or counseling professional, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I am an artist who earns a living as a technical support rep so I value both the creative and the analytical processes. I found that this book appealed to both.
As one who is always looking for creative outlets, ways to relax, and learning tools. I own many journals including SARK's. I feel like this is SARK bigger, better, and uncut *grin*. It has been a ton of fun to fill out each page and has helped me to catch some patterns I was unaware of in the process.
Located currently in Utah, religion can be a hot topic all the time. The last thing I want is a religion introduction masquerading as a journal/workbook. This book does not harp on Buddhism or any other religion. So if you are shying away because of that, don't. I just happened to pick it up off the shelf and had no idea the background until I read about the author.
Relaxation, thought, insight, fun, creative outlet, record of you....this book is that and more. All that and its cheap too! If youre hesitating on the purchase, I can tell you its worth the money and time.
