Book Description

Tree houses capture the imagination of the child in all of us, and they have never been more popular than they are today. This inspirational yet thoroughly practical guide shows even the most inexperienced weekend carpenter how to design and build a lifetime of memories for the entire family. With more than 200,000 copies of their popular Weekend Project Books sold, David and Jeanie Stiles have become America's First Couple of do-it-yourself woodworking. In Tree Houses You Can Actually Build, they explain basic building procedures through clear, simple instructions and non-technical line drawings that illustrate every step of the project, from the earliest sketches to the final cedar shingle. The authors outline five basic designs that can be adapted to virtually any set of conditions, and throughout the book, they emphasize safety for both adults and children. In addition to line drawings, the book contains a section of full-color photographs highlighting a variety of tree house projects, plus helpful building tips based on interviews with their owners.

3 out of 5 stars Lively little sketch book, very conversational.......2007-07-27

Works for kids, works for adults, very clear and very helpful. Very graphics oriented and the sketches make the text very clear.
Unfortunately does not even mention escalating tree houses beyond the backyard project - if this were a full-revalation book, you would see the new engineering miracle, the Garnier Limb.

We were quite pleased - PS we are hard graders, hardly anything gets a 5.

I think you have to be a master carpenter to actually do any of them in a week-end but the detail is pretty good.....odd thing is, I bought this book and already had it at home! I must have really liked it!

4 out of 5 stars To find the kids, look up.......2007-05-21

Color pictures of some fantastic tree house ideas. No limits on imagination here. One caution: Don't let the kids see it first! Can't wait to start one of these ideas.

5 out of 5 stars Great Help!!.......2007-05-08

Excellent guide for treehouse construction. We used the book as a basis for our treehouse and modified one of the designs. This book was extremely valuable for us and guided us through alot of potential pitfalls. Highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars you CAN actually build one of these!.......2007-05-06

What a fantastic book! My kids and I have had so much fun browsing through and getting ideas for their tree house. From the basic tree house to more elaborate designs, it's in here. With the help of this book, you can actually build one affordably.

Not much new in here, I should have checked the copy out at the library. If you watch the Home Imporvement shows on TV, there is nothing new, and certainly nothing interesting in this book. I wish I could remember where I read a recommendation for this book so I could write them a nasty letter.

To address some of the questions that the reader might have:

* This course is very easy to digest but will take about 4-5 hours of your time.
* It covers a great deal of many different subjects related to concession sales.
* Previous experience in this field is not necessary.
* The Dvd's give several good menu suggestions next to full instructions on preparing a variety of barbecue meals.
* Mr. Robertson shows a lot of experience and enthusiasm in his field.
* There is an Index of links as well as recipes towards the end of the book.

The author did an excellent job at describing ways how to get started in your own concession vending business. I have been operating a ball game concessions stand for over 8 years, next to my day job as a teacher and I have become quite experienced in this field. I know that there is a lot of money to be made with food sales. At sports events, the food and drinks are an essential part of the whole fun, no matter how pricey they are. The only drawbacks are the ever increasing concession fees to set up at the games. This is yet another reason, why owning a business as an independent operator makes a lot of sense.

After reviewing this course, I was able to learn a great deal more about concession sales. If you are thinking about starting out in this field, I can highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars fun and informative!.......2007-02-16

I originally bought this for my husband and ended up watching the DVD's with him. They are really packed with a lot of information and with valuable tips from a real professional.

Now BBQ became our first choice of foods to sell. The recipes in the film are truly wonderful and turned out well the first time we tried them. We also will focus on Tex-Mex foods that are very popular in our area.

The book gave us lots of good ideas that we will use in our own business. The author is right: cooking for fun is one thing- cooking for money is another! It was good to watch someone else do it first. Probably saved me from making lots of mistakes!

Overall, I am extremely happy with this purchase and I am glad I found it!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent purchase.......2006-12-13

This was by far the best purchase I made on amazon this year. I enjoyed watching the DVD's that covered far more than I expected.

I have always wanted to have my own restaurant, but never have been able to get it together. The trailer food business is more my thing, as I can leave it parked in my backyard when I don't want to sell. I had trouble finding information on the subject of mobile food vending and I wish I would have seen this course earlier. It has taught me a lot about this business. The film showed interesting background info and a lot of food being prepared for resale. The ribs looked delicious and I now always cook my ribs this way. Watching the procedure is like being there and much better than just reading about it...

The book is easy to follow and covers pretty much everything I needed to know. I am not much of a chef, but people were all impressed by the food I prepared the way it is described in the book. I fed over 300 people in one day by myself at our block party and made good money doing it. This guide was very helpful to me in my rural area. It also made me feel like I can actually put a business like this together in my spare time.

I found a few ideas to try that I never would have tried prior. Not everything is for everyone, but most should be able to pick out one or two projects that pay in themselves for the cost of the book. I would have, however, appreciated more step - wise pictures and having the instructions with the item, instead of in the back of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Wish I Had Thought of That.......2003-01-24

I have to admit, I actually borrowed this book from the library first to see if it was worth purchasing and it definitely is!! Great ideas on fairly easy projects that I can't wait to try. I'm no Martha Stewart, but I think I could actually DO most of the projects in this book. Very inspirational and the projects actually look NICE, not like grade school crafts. I recommend it!

On the positive side, the photographs are excellent. That's the only good news. This book does nothing but tell you how to make ... out of ... I'd return it if I could. The directions are sparse and usually say, use according to manufacturer's directions. Oh yea, I paid for that little tidbit. You have to be a moron not to have come up with anything in this publication.

    Book Description

What can you accomplish in a weekend, start to finish? Any one of the more than fifty-five exciting projects in Debbie Travis' Weekend Projects, by the star of the TV series The Painted House. Following the inspiring full-color photographs and simple instructions, even the beginning do-it-yourselfer can create beautiful pillows and frames, boxes and screens, and slipcovers -- each in just two days or less.

In transforming a home from plain to personalized, it's the little touches that make the difference. "The furniture and accessories you make or decorate yourself are the most successful," Debbie explains. "It's not just about the money we save . . . it's the experience of creating something by hand." Not only are these projects quick, inexpensive, and easy to make, but they also yield some of the most appealing and useful objects you could own. For example, a plain dresser or shelving unit can be completely restyled with a few hardware store add-ons and a bit of paint. With no-sew Velcro and self-adhesive hemming tape, anyone can hang patterned curtains or create a decorative pillow. A roll of screening and a staple gun turn a frame into a kitchen divider and tool rack in one. In sections that cover tables, screens, frames and mirrors, lighting, storage, fabrics and floorcloths, and garden furniture and accessories, Debbie visits every room of the house. Each project has been photographed to show not only the finished results, but also the step-by-step techniques needed. With so much variety in materials, processes, and end results, Debbie promises over a year of fun weekends, with a beautiful house as the bonus.

Lavishly illustrated with more than 350 full-color photographs, Debbie Travis' Weekend Projects is also the weekend crafter's manual, packed with valuable information, including tips on where to find pieces to make over, a complete listing and explanation of tools and materials needed, and instructions on how to prepare an array of different surfaces.

Whether it is a basic wood frame, a pressed-tin candlestick, or a velvet pillow, these treasures may take just a weekend to make, but they will bring a lifetime
    of enjoyment.

3 out of 5 stars Preparation Chapter best part of the book.......2005-12-23

Debbie Travis' books are a mixed bag. Some of them I really like and some are scarce on steps and details. This book falls into the latter category. The best part of the book to me were the two chapters, "Preparing your Project for Decoration" and "The Professional Touch". These chapters cover repairs of pieces, sanding, stripping, glazes and how to tint glazes, plaster, varnishes, stains, etc. and the best way to apply them for a professional finish.

This book covers all kinds of projects, indoor, outdoor, furniture, curtains, floors, screens, slipcovers and more.

Like another reviewer I thought many of the projects were very plain, but the beautiful ones sometimes seemed to leave out steps. Some of the more interesting projects were the:

    ~ vinegar-grained table (pg 70),
~ crackle varnish clock table (pg 76),
    ~ classical screen (pg 111),
~ faux leather frame (pg 118)
    ~ some of the curtains

The most interesting project that immediately caught my eye was a lamp made from an antique silver coffeepot (pg 130). Even though it had a full page photograph, it was not covered at all.

    Very disappointing book.

3 out of 5 stars Just not enough.......2005-11-06

I agree with other reviewers that this book has some great projects, some of which I plan to do, and it gave me some very good ideas. The problem for me is too few pictures and, in some cases, incomplete instructions.

For example, on page 70 is a gorgeous vinegar-grained and faux tortoiseshell table. But the instructions are incomplete, explaining and showing just two small sections of the work and parts of the process, and not giving instructions for the remainder of the table. The table has a very nice border that separates the center and the tortoiseshell edge, but the instructions don't even acknowledge its existence.

In several other cases, the pictures with the instructions seem to stop in mid process. It would be much better if the pictures continued through to the finished product.

This book feels as if Ms. Travis tried to jam as many projects into a set number of pages as possible, which gave me the feeling of being hurried while I was looking at the book.

I think she paid too little attention to giving full instructions and providing enough pictures. If expanded to include these things, this would be a five-star book.

1 out of 5 stars Better books on the market than this one........2004-11-01

This book looks good at first glance, but then it falls apart. The nice colored pictures cannot compensate for the poor hints and guidelines in creating the same effects. Also, many of the finished projects were downright ugly.

I expected this book to offer something really fresh but it didn't. I feel majorly ripped off.

    4 out of 5 stars Inspirational!!.......2003-06-20

Debbie Travis really breaks down projects that look complicated into easy steps. In looking for info on one project, I immediately became inspired to do several of her projects. They are all easilly adapted to your home and style, and definetly make you want to go for it!!

    5 out of 5 stars Great projects!.......2003-04-12

Lots of easy to do projects. Most of the projects can be adapted to suit your own decorating style.

      Book Description

It’s amazing that such simple materials—wool, soap, hot water—can result in fabric as infinitely varied in form and color as felt. The key is playful experimentation and this creative guide, which reveals exactly which wools to use, the effects of using hard versus soft water, and how to agitate the wool. Twenty colorful projects range from an inviting rug to a rolled Spiral Bracelet to slippers.

I read this book along with a few others to get some inspiration and learn more about the felting process. While this book is very informative and well written, please be advised that it contains instruction specific to the use of wool batts or roving type material and not yarns. If that is what you are looking for, then this the book for you.

This book is really well organized and has some wonderful-looking projects to try. However, as a complete beginner I ran into trouble and didn't find much advice in the book about what I might be doing wrong. If you have some basic experience with feltmaking I think you would like this book because it has a bunch of simple, nifty projects that would make wonderful gifts.

      Book Description

      Build a lifetime of Memories

Whether simple or architecturally fanciful, a playhouse can be a magical place for your child. David and Jeanie Stiles use their own experiences to guide the amateur carpenter through the steps necessary to build an imaginative playhouse -- for the backyard, basement or playroom.

Designed to be put together with easy-to-obtain materials and common handyman tools, with clear step-by-step diagrams, these playhouses can be constructed by anyone who has basic carpentry skills (or a willingness to learn) and a weekend or two of spare time.

Projects include: A cardboard-box playhouse, a gingerbread playhouse, a fiberglass whale, a barn bed playhouse, a spook playhouse, a U.F.O. playhouse, a tree house, a log playhouse, a garden trellis playhouse, a three-legged fort and a complete selection of accessories.

4 out of 5 stars What do you get for the money?.......2007-10-10

This is a great book wide range of choices, from a bed made to look like a barn, a play cube with each side a different fantasy (fire dept, post office, general store and puppet theatre) and not just standard playhouses. A log house, treehouses, and a trellised house that begs to be covered in climbing flowering vines and outfitted for a tea party.

You also get swings, a hand-built trolley, a cargo net climber, table and chairs for the house, a slide, shelves, benches and a swan-shaped rocking chair.

Admittedly not all plans for a beginner woodworker. He assumes a level of comfort in building that not all may have. Each project contains a detailed parts list--something lacking in other children's playhouse-type books, and lists the ages of children that the project is geared towards. The diagrams are black-and-white exploded drawings (show a two-dimensional view with measurements, angles and supports such as cleats or support blocks). If you are accustomed to these common layouts, you'll be fine.

He does make his own doors and windows which you may want to skip doing and just buy.

5 out of 5 stars You can build........2007-07-12

Clear, concise and well illutrated. I bought this book to use as a point of departure/inspiration to build a playhouse. The authors have done a great job on all thier carpentry/design books.

      4 out of 5 stars Playhouses.......2007-07-05

A good book with lots of plan designs. This book could
use more color pictures and examples, but makes up for
      it in design plans.

3 out of 5 stars Good ideas, bad plan.......2006-04-25

Overall, it's an 0K book - the ideas are good, but the descriptions are lacking. The thing that led me to write this review is to warn potential buyers that the (at least the "traditional playhouse") plans are riddled with errors. If you buy the book and plan to build the playhouse on the cover, make sure you check and double check the dimensions and angles before cutting your expensive wood. I found myself reading the scarce instructions over and over trying to figure out what the authors were talking about in many circumstances. I'd recommend, but WATCH OUT FOR THE ERRORS!

4 out of 5 stars aw, come on.......2005-12-04

I don't understand some of the people who write reviews. Do you
only think this book is bought by do-it-yourselfers? yes, there
are some people like me, who don't know anything about carpentry
who would gladly pay a carpenter to build a lovely playhouse
or anything else made of wood. . All I need are nice pictures to show the man. so why put down the book?
