Book Description
Occasional clashes between parents and children are not uncommon, but when defiant behavior — such as tantrums, resistance to chores, and negativity — becomes chronic, it can cause big problems within the family. In 10 Days to a Less Defiant Child, child and family psychologist Dr. Jeff Bernstein has developed a ground-breaking 10-day program to help parents gain back control over their defiant child or teen. This powerful and exceptionally reader-friendly guide explains what causes defiance in kids, why it's so destructive to the family, and shows parents step-by-step how they can end the behavior.
Simple-to-follow and extremely effective, 10 Days to a Less Defiant Child will bring much-needed relief to the millions of frustrated parents out there living with defiant children.

very helpful.......2007-10-05
While the author is a bit condescending towards parents, the book is helpful for developing tools for reducing defiance in children. Try it.....it seems to work.
Solid, sober, accurate advice.......2007-10-01
10 Days to a Less Defiant Child is a brilliant book, written by an author who has obvious experience dealing with defiant children and is written in an easy-to-read style. It's already made a huge difference with our seven-year-old son, and we've only just finished Day 3. Of course, like any "self help" book, this one requires changes in the parental "self." So be prepared to read carefully and put the advice to practice, both now and later. The rewards are worth the effort.
I'm a true believer.......2007-09-23
I didn't think this book would work. I read the other reviews before I purchased, and figured all I had to lose was the cash. I was already at the end of my rope. In one week, I cannot believe the change I see in my son! Don't let me fool you, we had to change too, my husband and myself, but omg the difference and the calm in our house is unbelievable, and I'm only on day 6 ! Well worth it. We spent thousands on a shrink and went no where. I spent less than $20 on this book!
Although my boys didn't grow halos in ten days..........2007-09-19
Although my boys didn't grow halos in ten days, I found this book to be very helpful in raising a very defiant six year old and his three year old brother who is beginning to copy his big brothers behavior. There were three points in the program that I was able to implement immediately: 1. Start listening to your child. 2. Stop the yelling. 3. Pick your battles.
I know the term "pick your battles" has been around forever, but the author really showed how to implement it. Staying calm and not yelling has kept my stress level much lower. Often my child is surprised when I ask him (calmly!) to explain why he is behaving inappropriately. It will often diffuse a full blown tantrum. This is the first book about defiant behavior that has given some help and hope.
Reassuring Guide to better parenting........2007-08-12
I feel better as a parent after reading Dr. Bernstein's book. But at times it is difficult in certain situations to adapt his philosphies to te real world. Maybe it takes practice and time. The book definetly identifies the triggers that increase negative behavior, which I found very helpful

Lists and More Lists.......2007-05-22
I think I'd rather I'd read this at Barnes and Noble or at a library than bought the book. It's good for people who need help learning about the disability and are new to the subject, specifically for elemetery age kids. But for those who are older of us who are looking to learn some new things, it's a giant book of lists and you know how organized us ADD people are... Hey look something shiney!
Great tool to help us raise our children.......2006-06-26
The ADHD book of list is a great guide to discovering the facts about ADHD and what can be done to work with a child who has been diagnosed with it and help him or her to be successful in life. It is appropriate for parents, counselors, educators and an community member who comes in contact with children and adults with this disorder.
this book is HUGE!.......2005-07-24
I didn't expect this book to be so huge...in size and also in the amount of info. i just received this book today and have skimmed over most of the info in it. i have already found several pages that i will photocopy and give to my child's teacher. the way that the information is presented is easy to follow, easy to locate, and easy to understand. well worth the money and time spent reading it from cover to cover.

If you buy only one book on ADD, make it this one.
It is huge, comprehensive, terrifically well organized and uniquely easy to use. Because it is presented in list form, you can turn to the topic you need and get more information in two or three pages than most books contain in a 25 page chapter that takes you much, much longer to read.
And if you are a parent of a child or teen with ADD, you simply do not have extra time. You will get what you need here and get it fast.
There are even sample forms (goals sheets, behavioral records, and charts) that are easy to copy and use.
This book will make your life easier!
Great buy!.......2003-06-13
Without a doubt, this is the most comprehensive and easy-to-read book on AD/HD I have ever read. This book would be an excellent reference for any classroom with AD/HD students. The list format makes finding what you're looking for a pleasant experience. Plus, I've been able to incorporate many of the strategies presented in this book, and I'm extremely pleased with the results.

Step-mom to ADHD teen .......2007-05-25
This book has been very insightful to this step-mom, who recently had my 15 year old ADHD stepson move into my home. I have been very frustrated, but now understand alot more about this disorder thanks to Colleen Alexander-Roberts and her book. We still have many more challenges ahead, but I feel this book has gotten me off to a great start in handling the behaviors.
Must read for parents of teenagers with ADHD.......2007-04-07
This is a really helpful book that is also quick and easy to read. There were many great ideas that we were able to put into place pretty quickly; it also gave me some different perspectives that I hadn't considered but now keep in mind when talking with my teen. Since reading this book, we have had a lot less battles in our home which is really saying something if you live with a teenager who also has ADHD!

I am an ADHD female and I found this book very helpfull.I can now pay attention better and curve my impusivity. The strategies were very helpfull and I am now an A student without medicine.I am also not ashamed of having ADHD anymore.
A well-written, compehensive look at ADHD in Teens. A gem!.......1996-11-15
Ms. Alexander-Roberts' second book on the topic carries on where her first book, "The ADHD Parenting
Handbook", leaves off. She has written an excellent, well-researched book that provides in-depth information on living with the teenager with ADHD. She covers the most important concerns well. These include: parenting strategies that work; the use of medication; and the positive aspects of having ADHD. She also discusses helping your teen say "no" to drugs; other co-existing disorders that may be present, but often go undiagnosed and untreated; and many other topics important to parents of ADHD teens. Highly recommended

A waste.......2000-10-04
Overly simplistic garbage. The crucial content of this book could fit into a pamphlet. Buy a different book.
Condescending and simplistic.......1999-12-10
These tapes were awful. It took 4 tapes to communicate 6 basic ideas. Buntman repeats these ideas, word for word, about 15 times each. The examples and analogies he uses are so simplistic that his style becomes condescending. The interview style used by the narrator and Buntman was contrived, and came across as a plug to buy the book.
The ideas conveyed are good ones, but this way of communicating them was just about as irritating as it gets. I have not read the book, but assume it must be better.
Outstanding Parenting Material (Tape Series).......1998-09-11
Buntman is an unusual author in the field of "help for parents." His material is practical and you can put it into practice immediately when you are through listening to the tapes. He doesn't talk about theory; he talks about specific suggestions that really work. His material is based on his over 25 years of doing counseling and therapy with children and teens. This tape series gives you the basic skills to parent a child and teen. When you are finished with these tapes, you can really put the suggestons into practice. This is material that every parent should have; it is must listening!
The skills that Buntman teaches will help build your child's self-esteem, help you communicate better with him and help guide him in the difficult journey through life. This is for parents of 6-year-olds to 19-year-olds.

Book Description
Teenager Reid Anderson knows there's something wrong with society, otherwise he wouldn't feel so alienated. He has a problem with authority but can't decide: "am I antisocial or does society suck?" So he goes through life pretending he doesn't care.
A new Wii console and simulation game show up in his rec room, and Reid is just bored enough to try them out. When a demon from inside the game threatens him in reality, Reid is plunged into a world of troubled teens he didn't know existed. The demon's challenge takes him on a journey of discovery. Suddenly exposed to other outsiders, Reid learns to question authority and find his own answers. He finds true friends among those labeled defective and cast aside by society-and together, they learn to fight for themselves.
Set against a background of video games, teen mental illness, and anticonsumer counterculture; told through the eyes of Reid and his friends, Outside the Box challenges the safe, orthodox picture of the world championed in many popular teen novels.
Customer Reviews:
A new type of young adult book.......2007-07-26
An excellent book; well written and well informed. A book parents need to read to help them understand their teenagers. Above all, a good story, well told.
Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-06-25
Let's begin this review by stating that the author, Dan Allosso, is working on a sequel to OUTSIDE THE BOX. I just wanted to get that out of the way, because after reading this book, you will definitely want to know more.
OUTSIDE THE BOX features top-of-the-line gaming equipment and cutting-edge game programs. Main character Reid Anderson takes readers on a trip into that world that they won't forget.
Reid generally likes to keep a low profile. His parents are hard-working, well-paid executives who keep their son surrounded with the latest and greatest of everything. His mother shops for him in the best clothing stores, making sure he has the coolest designer labels. His father designs game programs for a popular company, so it's no surprise when a brand new Wii machine shows up in the well-equipped basement rec room.
At first Reid doesn't show much interest. If it's something his parents think he might be interested in, he sure doesn't want it to look like they were right. But after thinking about it for awhile, Reid decides he might as well enjoy the Wii. Playing feels pretty normal at first, but then some strange things begin to happen. The game seems to have features regular off-the-shelf games wouldn't have. Reid considers that perhaps his dad has arranged some custom game to impress his otherwise ignored son.
But then a voice starts talking to Reid. The voice, and then an actual character, is part of the game. Weird ....
When Reid starts to investigate and mentions this strange phenomenon, he is warned by the game to keep quiet. The investigating Reid does begins to open some very interesting doors. One that's a bit scary is the fact that the state is watching kids diagnosed with mental health issues by having them play the game. Reid finds that the information gathered when the kids play is being used to prescribe changes in their medications and monitor their progress. Even more weird ....
An unexpected email message lets Reid know that he is not alone. He eventually joins forces with Louise, Larry, and Dave to question the mysterious JCN character in the game and find out exactly what is going on.
OUTSIDE THE BOX is sure to be popular among gaming teens, but beyond that, anyone who does indeed think "outside the box" is sure to be glad that the adventure will continue....

Not just for teenagers.......2007-06-16
Even though it is a young adult novel, I would recommend it to anyone. I just love the liberal teen rebellion. This would make a GREAT movie!!
Find the Messages!.......2007-06-13
I just finished Outside the Box and can't wait for the next one.ý Lots of messages buried in that little book.ý Should be "required reading" for school kids ... better yet, it should be what happens to all the school kids.ý Being "looked after" by someone who really cares what happens to them. Acknowledging that "authorities" don't always know what they are talking about or what they are doing; and that young people need to "follow their own inner voice" and that that's ok.
This is a Young Adult novel. Ages 12-19........2007-06-06
I'm the author of this book. There was an error in the description. This is a Young Adult novel, written for ages 12-19. Don't be fooled by the 9-12 age range in the description. It's a story about and primarily for teens (although everybody's welcome to read it, of course).
I had to give it a 5 (what would you have done?). But by way of justification, Terry Davis (bestselling author of Vision Quest and other Young Adult novels) loved it. Said it was "the best book you won't see in a bookstore this year!" For more info, check out [..] thanks!
