The series has the warmth and sense of solidarity intrinsic of wartimes and the post-war era. There is a general feeling of peace and simplicity. When the series opens, the Malone children are motherless, as Mary Malone has been dead for three years. The father, Martie Malone, is often absent due to his duties as editor of the Denver Call. Three of the four Malone children, Mary Fred, Johnny and Beany, live at home. The oldest Malone daughter, the beautiful, loving Elizabeth, has been married to Lieutenant Donald McCallin for one year. The Malones live on Barberry Street in a large, wide-bosomed gray stone home. Their surrounding neighbors are Mrs. Morrison Adams (known as Mrs. Socially-prominent Adams) in her red brick home with immaculate white trim and frilly curtains in the windows, and the imposing and stately home of the Judge Buell family.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING SERIES!! IS A MUST READ!.......2006-06-24

I got the entire series this past Christmas. I had read the first 2 because although my library had more, they didn't have all of them, and they didn't have the 3rd and I don't like to read things out of order so I was really sad. So then I was soo happy to find out they were being republished by Image Cascading!!!

So yea I read them all and they all rock!!! It's nice seeing what teenagers did back in the 50's. And it was also nice how different people's relationships were with their family's, I wish it were more like that today. And they are also way more responsible and mature then we are now. Making their own money, not having to depend on their parents for everything. And their parents respect and trust them more too! And they definatly treat their parents with much respect which is ALOT more then I can say about kids of today.

The first book is about Beany's older sister, Mary Fred. It is in MF's junior year of highschool, when Beany is in 8th grade. The rest of the books are all about Beany, in highschool, college, and then when she gets married. And let me just say I LOVE who she ends up with. They are SOOO cute!!!

Everyone should read these books they are amazing and are definatly one of my favorite books ever!

After storing hundreds of my daughter's Beanie Babies for years, I purchased this book to help me decide which ones to keep and which ones I could pass on to others to enjoy. Very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have for all Beanie Baby collectors!.......2006-01-31

I was very happy that the publisher (Bangzoom) made a second edition of this book. I also own the first edition of this book which was released in 2003, and this second edition picks up where it left off and also includes an additional Ty product line. The first edition included Beanie Babies, Beanie Buddies, Beanie Kids, Beanie Boppers, Teenie Beanie Boppers, Jingle Beanies, Basket Beanies, Punkies, and Pluffies. The second edition updated these lines to include product introduced since the first edition's release, and they've added the Teenie Beanie Babies which were a promotion at McDonald's. Also included are Appendices listing all available Champion Beanies and Buddies, Kanata Beanies, and Issy Beanies. This second edition improves on the first edition by adding space on each page for recording the price you paid for a Beanie and its current value, pages to add new products as they are released, a section for notes, pages to calculate the value of your collection, a checklist, and a Beanie Baby birthday index. Karen Holmes did a wonderful job of researching hang tag generations, tush tag generations, and Beanie information. She also provided the pictures included in the book. I use this book constantly to track my collection and highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars THE INDISPENSIBLE 2ND EDITION BEANIE GUIDE.......2006-07-21

Beanie Babies were one of the truly remarkable pop culture phenomena of the last 15 years. I can still remember the first time McDonald's offered the Teenie Beanies and my wife and I spent the better part of the weekend trying to track down as many of the little critters for our son as we could. Beanies, however, suffered the same fate as many other collectibles such as comic books and sports cards, two hobbies I was very familiar with. First, it quickly became driven by speculators trying to make a quick buck. Next, corporate greed too over as Ty began churning out more and more product and started to try and manufacture collectibles with special releases. Today, we go to garage sales and Flea Markets and see people dumping their Beanies, often for as little as a buck each.

Yet for its core collectors, those who got into it for the love, and not necessarily the promise of future value, Beanies are still around and viable. If you don't think there is still an active market out there for trading Beanies, just check out eBay. As I write this review there are over 21,000 auctions underway in the Ty category. The speculators have long since dropped out, prices have righted themselves, and Bangzoom has released the 2nd edition of their indispensable guide. The guide covers the Beanie scene right up through the beginning of 2006 and in its review of the marketplace it makes no bones about it...now is a great time to buy, but not such a great time to sell.

The book provides a history of Beanies and their hang tags. A picture of generation's unique tag is included in the book with notes on variations and changes. The book also lists several different Beanie related websites that feature news, accessory sales, trading posts, and other information. The book lists Beanies alphabetically, and lists their birth date, introduction date, retirement date (if applicable) and their hang tag poems. The generation(s) is also listed as well as a current price. But you'll find more than just Beanie Babies In the guide...it also covers Beanie Buddies, Kids, Boppers, Teenie Beanies, Jingle Beanies, Pluffies, Punkies, and more, over 1500 different TY items. The back provides a handy index and checklist.

While the craze of the mid-90's may be over, there are still millions of Beanie collectors and lovers out there and there is simply no better book on the Market than the Ty Beanies Tracker from Bangzoom.

5 out of 5 stars Beany and the Dreaded Wedding Book Review.......2006-04-23

Beany and the Dreaded Wedding is about Beany's cousin, Amy, having a wedding with Peter, her boyfriend. Amy wanted Beany to be the flowergirl and the bearer. Beany sort of wanted to go and sort of not, because she was scared of everybody staring at her in the wedding party. She wanted to go because she thought it would be exciting. When the wedding was finished, she was not scared any more. The wedding ended up to be a fine and peaceful wedding. I like this book so much. I would like to recommended it to all of my friends, my family and best of all, all my best teachers, counting all of them. And the part I most liked was when the big fat celebration of the wedding started and ended. If I were Beany, I would not be so scared. I would just be super excited. By the way, I am [...]

5 out of 5 stars A nice normal kid........2003-12-21

Beany is a nice normal kid. She's not as loud as Ramona Quimby but she's just as earnest and concerned about the world around her. If you're asking a young girl to be in your wedding, I highly recommend this as a good primer on the ups and downs of being a flower girl. I especially like the adults in this book, who are warm and caring and make you feel like Beany is going to grow up to be a great person.

5 out of 5 stars You'll love Beany!.......2000-10-29

Beany is the kid everyone of every age can relate to. She worries about everything! She's timid, curious, and sweet. Reading about the ups and downs of Beany's life, and how she conquers her worries, will give you hope that if Beany can do it, so can you! Beany is the genuine article. You'll love her, I promise!

5 out of 5 stars Beany's the best!.......2000-10-05

I loved Beany and the Dreaded Wedding! Children will relate to Beany's worries when she is asked to be a flower girl in her cousin's wedding - will the dress be ugly and frilly, will she trip going down the aisle? The author is always sensitive in handling Beany's worries. Beany's "know it all" friend Carol Ann is always close at hand to "help" Beany solve her problems. The contrast between Beany and Carol Ann adds just the right tension which is so common in childhood friendships. Beany is delightful! The book is sprinkled with humor which will appeal to kids and adults alike. Throughout the story, the reader can sense that Beany will work out her concerns and a happy ending is right around the corner.

Children ages 8-10 will love Beany and will be eager to read more of her stories!

Book Description

In Beany's latest adventure, the lovable worrywart gets stuck with a meany for a science-fair partner but discovers the confidence - and the smarts - to hold her own.

It starts out being a good day, as Beany and her best friend, Carol Ann, sit together on the school bus, happily planning a backyard campout. But that's before Beany learns there's a new kid in class, a fun girl with whom Carol Ann is matched up as guide and welcoming committee. And it's definitely before Ms. Babbitt announces there's going to be a science fair - and suddenly everyone's paired with a partner but Beany and Kevin Gates, the notorious class meany. How can timid Beany work with a bully who bosses her around and calls her names (even if he's surprisingly good at science)? Will she ever work up the nerve to tell him her own great idea for clinching their science project?

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Beany Means Well.......2006-06-18

Two big things happen in Beany's classroom on the same day: a new girl named Stacy joins the class, and everyone teams up to do science projects. Beany's best friend, Carol Ann, pairs up with the new girl; Beany gets stuck with Kevin.

Beany knows what she likes: her family, her teacher, her best friend Carol Ann, and her stuffed moose Jingle Bell, campouts, and her big brother, sometimes. She knows what she doesn't like: Kevin. She think he's a bully and he thinks she's a nuisance. When they finally start working on the experiment, Beany learns that Kevin is smarter than she thought he was, and that he really likes science. Beany and the Meany is a simple, cute story about getting along and working together.

This story could have been heavy on jealousy and misjudging new classmates, but it wasn't, and that was nice to see. Instead of ditching her best friend for the new girl, it is made apparent from the beginning that Carol Ann was the "special helper" in the classroom that week, so she was assigned to help Stacy out. The two naturally became fast friends, as kids that age are so likely to do, and they spend a lot of time working on their own project together, but Carol Ann never outright ignores Beany nor vice-versa. Beany feels left out, but she is more sad than she is jealous. Of course, by the book's close, Beany has two new friends in addition to her best friend, and all is well.

5 out of 5 stars A realistic dilemma will attract readers in elementary grades 3-5.......2005-09-12

Susan Wojciechowski's Beany And The Meany is peppered with black and white drawings by Susanna Natti as it tells of a science project which sticks Beany with the class bully Kevin. How can Beany save her project and work with the meanest boy in school? A realistic dilemma will attract readers in elementary grades 3-5.

I recently discovered Susan Wojciechowski's Beany series and I love them! Beany is a believable character, with whom I think many children can identify. Often her worries and troubles remind me of things that bothered me when I was a kid. As a teacher, I plan to use this book (and the other Beany books) with my grade 2 class. It has a great flow, is engaging, and has many lessons on appropriate problem-solving and kind, considerate behavior without that actually being the focus of the story.

4 out of 5 stars Fun girl reading that tackles tough issues.......2003-03-19

This series of fourteen stories about teenage life and growing up were written in the style of "popular fiction" for young people in the 50s and 60s. I think the stories are rather groundbreaking for their day in that they're sort of anti-Leave it to Beaver. Rather than a "perfect" and orderly household that's just-so middle class we have a hectic family of four teen and young-adult children and a widowed father who is frequently out of town. While there father is loving and they have a substantial "support system" in each other and in friends and neighbors, many of the conflicts and plot-lines center around very real confusions, temptations and philosophies that teens struggle with. It's nice to see ideas like the value of earning your own money, the dangers of "going steady" too soon, the difficulties of early marriage, the beauty of a simple wedding and the importance of love and understanding in dealing with "difficult children" incorporated into engaging stories. Teens will benefit from grappling with these ideas in a story before they face them in real life.

The stories are very girlish - there's a lot about dating and clothes. They're not great literature, but they have a lot of heart, they're a lot of fun, they're easy to read and I think you'll be glad you met Beany and all the Malones.

    5 out of 5 stars Reissued edition of a 1950-1960s classic.......2002-01-12

Popular juvenile writer L.M. Weber wrote 15 books about the Malones from 1943-1969, which are now reissueed by Image-Cascade. The books are sturdy editions of the classics which even have the pictures from the dustcover printed on the paperback bindings, a particularly nice touch for those of us who remember the classic dustcovers. If you want to buy them all you might buy directly from the publisher as they offer a discount if you buy the entire series.

On the books: this is a very wholesome series from the post-war, baby boom days when older teenagers of the middle classes were just beginning to debate the question of dating behavior, independence from parents, early marriage and sexual activity. Each book centers around one sort of moral dilemma that organizes the action of the characters In this book we are introduced to the Malone family when their widowed father has to be away for sometime and their stepgrandmother comes to pick up the slack and organize their lives for them. How each of the Malone children from the oldest, recently married Elizabeth, to horseriding Mary Fred, historian Johnny, and determined housewifely youngest daughter Catherine Cecilia or "Beany" as she is known to all and sundry, deal with the question of independence and self-determination is the theme of this particular book. The series carries us through several of Beany's boyfriends and her search for an ideal, sensible mate, ending in a last novel that discusses a point very early in her marriage to Mr. Right, Carlton Buell. The plot devices of the books are rather formulaic; they often turn on information one character has and does not share with the others, or a belief that one character has that turns out to be wrong. Characterization is very flat and unsophisticated and as the series goes on, there is a great deal of repetition of characterization devices that takes up more and more of the book each time. But these books were beloved in their age and are definitely nostalgic to read again. Still, they take us back to a point in American history that has a reputation of being a peaceful era and we see that even before Vietnam and the 1960s teenagers were dealing with moral dilemmas and wondering how best to grow up. Beany and her siblings also provide good moral examples, since they always struggle but in the end do the right thing. Strongly recommended, even they are a bit oldfashioned nowadays.

      Book Description

Meet Bernice Lorraine Sherwin-Hendricks, known as Beany by just about everyone except her older brother who calls her Beanhead. Beany's got 23 freckles, a bossy best friend, and a tendency to worry over just about everything. Like, for example, the time her loose tooth disappears down the drain. Will the tooth fairy still put money under her pillow—and how much? With an unfaltering touch for capturing the real concerns of a regular kid, Susan Wojciechowski presents five enormously entertaining stories about Beany's life at home and at school.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Beanie is a comical character very much like Ramona Quimby........1999-02-26

My daughter and I read this book as part of our nightly reading ritual. I think that I loved the book as much, or maybe even more than she did. We enjoyed reading about Beany's worries and we laughed at how she solved her problems. This is a must read for any young reader.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for boys, too!.......1998-04-13

My son (age 7) and I are currently reading this book at bedtime. He loves the book even though the main character is a girl. He identifies with Beany because he, too, is a worrywart. I would recommend this book for both boys and girls.
